THE RISE OF SELF-CARE RITUALS

EMPOWERING CLIENTS TO MAINTAIN RESULTS AT HOME

As the beauty and wellness industries continue to evolve, self-care rituals are emerging as an essential component of skincare. Clients are increasingly recognizing the importance of maintaining their skincare results at home, leading to a greater emphasis on self-care practices. Empowering clients with effective self-care rituals not only enhances their skincare experience but also fosters a

deeper connection between clients and their estheticians. Estheticians who create follow-along beauty routines and rituals for clients to implement at home are effectively bridging the gap between appointments!

"Self-care rituals can vary from simple daily habits to more elaborate weekly treatments.."

UNDERSTANDING SELF-CARE IN SKINCARE

Self-care encompasses a wide range of practices aimed at nurturing one’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. In the context of skincare, it involves adopting routines that support skin health, enhance results from professional treatments, and promote relaxation.

Self-care rituals can vary from simple daily habits to more elaborate weekly treatments, providing clients with tools to take charge of their skin health.

EMPOWERING CLIENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE

One of the most effective ways to empower clients is by educating them about their skin type and specific concerns. Providing personalized product recommendations and step-by-step guides for athome routines can help clients feel confident in maintaining their results. Encourage clients to ask questions during their appointments and share tips on how to maximize the benefits of their treatments at home.

Consider creating informative content, such as videos or pamphlets, that demonstrate self-care techniques, like proper cleansing methods, facial massage, or the use of tools like gua sha or jade rollers. This not only reinforces your expertise but also gives clients practical tools to enhance their skincare routines.

ENCOURAGING CONSISTENCY

Establishing a consistent self-care routine is crucial for maintaining skincare results. Encourage clients to set aside dedicated time each week for their skincare rituals. This not only reinforces their commitment to their skin health but also fosters a sense of mindfulness and relaxation. To further support this, consider offering follow-up appointments or virtual check-ins to monitor their progress and address any concerns. This ongoing relationship can motivate clients to stick to their self-care

routines and continually seek your expertise.

To further engage clients, estheticians can develop 7 to 30-day challenges or guides that encourage consistent self-care practices. These challenges can include daily skincare routines, mindfulness exercises, or healthy lifestyle tips tailored to clients' needs. By providing structured, easyto-follow plans, estheticians can motivate clients to stay committed to their skincare goals and celebrate their progress along the way!

BUYER BEWARE

The increased prevalence of counterfeit beauty products

How many times have you ordered something from an ecommerce website and when it arrived the product was not what you expected? This happens more frequently than you might realize, and beauty products are not immune.

In the skincare industry, quality, precision, and safety are paramount. Professionals and enthusiasts alike rely on trusted tools to ensure effective treatments and procedures. Trusted industry brands have a reputation for high quality. However, as

these products gain popularity, so do the chances of inferior copycat products entering the market. In this case imitation is not the best form of flattery. As with any reputable brand, counterfeit and inferior low-quality products can pose serious risks to both the efficacy of treatments and the safety of users.

In just the past year alone there have been known cases of counterfeiting for dermaplaning blades, makeup products, and even Botox. These pose a real and true threat

to the safety of this industry. For example, proven counterfeit copies of a well-known, top of the line dermaplaning blade have been found on platforms such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay, and Walmart at extremely low prices because they are not manufactured with the high-quality standards of the authentic product.

By

staying informed, purchasing from trusted sources, and carefully inspecting products for authenticity you can safeguard against the dangers of counterfeit products..

How To Identify Counterfeit Products

To protect yourself and your clients from the risks associated with counterfeit products, it’s essential to be vigilant and know where you are sourcing your products.

Purchase From Authorized Suppliers:

Only purchase from authorized distributors and reputable suppliers. Think twice before buying from unfamiliar sellers on online marketplaces promoting highly discounted prices, as these may be indicators of counterfeit products. When the deal seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Check

Packaging And Labels:

Genuine beauty industry products will be packaged with quality material with logos and product information clearly printed. Check for spelling errors, inconsistent branding, different size font, or unusual packaging design, as these may signal counterfeit products. But buyer beware - the differences can be very subtle.

Inspect The Quality: Examine the product closely for signs of poor manufacturing. If you’ve used it before

and the product is not performing the same way, there’s a good chance the product is a low-quality substitute or counterfeit product.

What To Do If You Suspect A Counterfeit Product

Report It: If you believe that you have purchased a counterfeit product you should report it to the selling entity right away.

Check With The Manufacturer: As a follow up, you might consider reaching out to the manufacturer of the product to share your information. Talk about it: Let your colleagues know what you’ve experienced. You may help them to know that a product they thought was bad was just a low-quality imitation of the real thing.

Popular beauty and skincare treatments are valued for their ability to rejuvenate and refresh the skin. However, the use of counterfeit products poses significant risks to both the effectiveness of the procedures and the safety of individuals undergoing treatment. By staying informed, purchasing from

trusted sources, and carefully inspecting products for authenticity, you can safeguard against the dangers of counterfeit products and ensure optimal results for yourself and your clients. Knowing and trusting the seller of the products you are using should be the number one priority to ensure you are properly caring for your clients.

HOW DIET AFFECTS SKIN HEALTH

As estheticians, we’re trained to look for solutions that improve our clients’ skin health, whether through professional treatments or highquality topical products. But what if I told you that one of the most powerful tools for treating acne isn’t found in a bottle? It’s actually what’s on your client’s plate.

My name is Mariah Andersen, and I’m an esthetician from Idaho who specializes in hormonal acne and gut health. My seven years of experience as a personal trainer and nutrition coach have tremendously helped me in and out of the treatment room.

When we think about acne and other skin conditions, we often focus on what we can do externally— peels, extractions, and treatments that improve skin texture or reduce breakouts. While these treatments have their place, I’ve found that true healing happens from within. The gut-skin connection is at the heart of my approach, and I’m here to help fellow estheticians learn how to harness this connection to help their clients manage and clear acne from the inside out.

The Gut-Skin Connection Starts with Inflammation

At the root of many skin issues, particularly acne, is internal inflammation. Acne, especially hormonal acne, is often a visible symptom of deeper imbalances within the body, particularly the digestive system. The gut plays a significant role in regulating inflammation throughout the body, and when the gut is compromised, it can manifest in various ways on the skin.

So, what’s driving this internal inflammation? Diet plays a huge role. Clients with a diet high in sugar, processed foods, and alcohol are more likely to experience gut issues such as dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria), which can trigger inflammation and, ultimately, acne. Additionally, stress, lack of sleep, and poor lifestyle habits exacerbate these issues, creating a perfect storm for chronic acne.

The key here is understanding that the skin is often a reflection of what’s happening internally. When I consult with my clients, I don’t just ask about their skincare routine—I ask about their diet, stress levels, sleep patterns, and exercise habits.

These are all factors that directly impact skin health.

How Filtering Organs Affect Skin Health

The skin is our largest organ and acts as a mirror of what’s happening within the body. When the body is overloaded with toxins or inflammation, the skin often shows the signs. But the skin isn’t the only organ responsible for detoxification—our liver and kidneys also play critical roles in filtering and eliminating toxins from the body. Here’s how each of these filtering organs can affect skin health:

The Liver:

The liver is our body’s primary detoxification organ. It filters out toxins from the blood and metabolizes hormones, fats, and other compounds. When the liver is overloaded—whether due to poor diet, alcohol consumption, or excessive intake of medications—its ability to effectively detoxify the body is compromised. This can lead to a buildup of toxins that eventually show up on the skin as acne, rashes, or dullness.

For clients with chronic acne, I often suspect that the liver is struggling to keep up with the body’s detoxification needs. By encouraging a diet rich in liver-supporting foods—such as leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and antioxidant-rich berries—we can help support liver function and, in turn, reduce the toxic load that’s impacting the skin.

The Kidneys:

The kidneys are responsible for filtering excess waste and toxins from the bloodstream, but they also play a key role in regulating fluid balance and blood pressure. Dehydration, caffeine, alcohol, and excess sodium can all impact kidney function, which can lead to bloating, water retention, and a dull or puffy complexion.

Clients who drink energy drinks or consume excess caffeine are often putting a strain on their kidneys without realizing it. I encourage my clients to stay hydrated and incorporate kidney-friendly foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and herbs such as parsley to support kidney health and promote a clearer complexion.

The Skin:

Of course, the skin itself is also a detoxifying organ. When the liver and kidneys are overwhelmed or unable to process toxins efficiently, they are pushed out through the path of least resistance—the skin—leading to acne, rashes, or other skin conditions.

Encouraging lymphatic drainage through facial massage or dry brushing can help reduce the stagnation that leads to puffiness, congestion, and breakouts. Additionally, supporting detoxification through diet and proper hydration can alleviate the burden on the skin and promote clearer, healthier skin overall.

The Role of Diet in Skin Health

It’s no secret that what we eat has a direct impact on how we feel and function, but many estheticians overlook the significant impact diet can have on skin health. One of the most important things I teach fellow estheticians is how to guide their clients toward a more balanced, skin-friendly diet.

Here are three key areas to focus on: Blood Sugar Regulation:

Blood sugar spikes and crashes are a common culprit behind acne flare-ups. When blood sugar levels fluctuate rapidly—due to high-sugar snacks, refined carbohydrates, or caffeinated drinks on an empty stomach—the body responds by releasing insulin, which triggers a cascade of hormonal responses. These hormonal shifts can increase sebum production, clog pores, and lead to breakouts.

Encouraging clients to stabilize their blood sugar by incorporating more protein, fiber, and healthy fats into each meal can go a long way in reducing acne. I recommend starting the day with a balanced breakfast that includes protein and healthy fats to keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day.

Inflammation-Reducing Foods:

A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods can significantly reduce the inflammation that drives acne. Clients who consume excessive amounts of sugar, dairy, processed foods, and alcohol are likely contributing to chronic inflammation, which shows up on their skin.

By educating clients about the importance of reducing inflammatory foods and incorporating anti-inflammatory options—such as omega-3-rich fish, flaxseeds, turmeric, and leafy greens—esthetician professionals can help their clients improve their skin from the inside out.

Avoiding Toxins:

Toxicity in the form of medications, antibiotics, alcohol, energy drinks, and excess caffeine is often overlooked but plays a significant role in acne. Many clients don’t realize how these substances disrupt the body’s natural detoxification pathways, leading to more inflammation, hormonal imbalance, and skin issues.

Estheticians can guide clients toward healthier choices, such as reducing energy drinks and excessive caffeine and incorporating herbal teas and natural energy-boosting drinks like matcha.

"For

clients with chronic I often suspect that struggling to keep body’s detoxification

chronic acne, the liver is up with the needs. "

Bringing It All Together: Healthy Lifestyle Habits for Clearer Skin

In addition to diet, lifestyle habits play an equally important role in skin health. Encouraging clients to move their bodies through regular exercise, get adequate sleep, and manage stress levels can have a profound impact on their overall health and skin clarity. Simple changes, such as prioritizing hydration, incorporating movement, and practicing mindfulness, can significantly reduce the internal inflammation that drives acne.

I saw such a huge gap in our esthetics curriculum, which is why I’ve made it my mission to educate as many estheticians as possible with my virtual courses. I offer a variety of courses, including social media growth, Oilplane technique, and, of course, my signature program, Gut Glow Academy.

As estheticians, we have the unique opportunity to educate our clients about the holistic approach to clear skin. By focusing not only on what’s applied to the skin but also on what’s happening within the body, we can help clients achieve lasting results that go far beyond the surface.

BEAUTIFUL SKIN COMES FROM WITHIN

Esthetician Spotlight

Gut

Can you share your journey from bodybuilding and nutrition coaching to becoming an esthetician? How have these backgrounds influenced your approach to skincare?

I started bodybuilding in 2017 after being inspired by watching a friend’s competition. The process of improving my physique got me hooked, and I eventually became a personal trainer and nutrition coach to help others achieve their health goals. This background shaped my approach to skincare because I learned that what we eat and how we take care of our bodies internally has a direct impact on our skin. I now approach skin health holistically, integrating nutrition and fitness principles to address root causes like inflammation and hormonal imbalances.

What inspired you to teach classes on the connection between gut health and skin health?

My own hormonal acne journey made me realize how interconnected the gut and skin are. From working at a dermatology office, I saw firsthand that many acne clients were being dismissed and only prescribed medications as a way to ‘treat acne,’ but they were never educated about the true internal imbalance happening. Many of my clients who struggled with acne had underlying gut health or hormonal issues. I wanted to share that knowledge with other estheticians so they could understand the importance of addressing internal health alongside topical treatments. That’s when Gut Glow Academy was born. Teaching this connection empowers them to help clients in a deeper, more effective way.

How do you integrate your knowledge of nutrition into your skincare treatments?

I assess both internal and external factors when treating skin issues. During consultations, I ask about clients’ diet, digestion, skincare routine, and overall

lifestyle. This helps me create personalized skincare plans that include nutritional guidance, such as balancing blood sugar, reducing inflammatory foods, and incorporating gut-friendly habits, alongside targeted skincare treatments and customized home care routines.

What are some common misconceptions about gut health and its impact on the skin?

A common misconception is that gut health only matters if someone has bloating, constipation, or other digestive issues, but imbalances like dysbiosis or leaky gut can show up as skin problems, even without obvious symptoms. Another myth is that taking medications, supplements, or probiotics alone will fix everything—gut health requires a holistic approach, including a balanced diet, stress management, and lifestyle changes to see real improvements in the skin!

In your experience, what are the most effective strategies for growing an esthetician's business?

Consistency and specialization are key. By focusing on a niche and showcasing your knowledge, you position yourself as an expert, which builds trust with clients. Social media confidence is also essential. Sharing educational content and showcasing client results can drive engagement and attract new clients. Lastly, offering personalized experiences, such as tailored consultations, helps build strong client relationships.

Can you elaborate on your oil-planing technique and its benefits for both clients and estheticians?

The traditional method for dermaplaning is done dry, and I kept finding that my clients were leaving with dry, irritated, and inflamed skin after the treatment. Oil-planing uses nourishing oils to enhance dermaplaning treatments. It’s especially beneficial for clients with more sensitive skin because it creates a barrier between the blade and the skin, reducing irritation. This method allows for deeper exfoliation while keeping the skin hydrated, leading to better results with less risk of inflammation. Once I started using oil and following a specific treatment pattern, it improved my client satisfaction immensely. For estheticians, my virtual course on oil-planing offers a gentler approach that minimizes complications (like

cutting your client) and increases client satisfaction.

What challenges did you face during your early years as a business owner, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was gaining confidence as a new esthetician, especially in building a clientele and navigating business logistics. I started as a solo esthetician right out of school and was so lost because I wasn’t prepared for any of it during school. I overcame this by continuing my education, investing in mentorship, and focusing on social media to showcase my expertise. Learning to manage time, money, and client relationships effectively also played a huge role in overcoming the early hurdles. I think the best thing new and seasoned estheticians can do is to have an open mind and always continue learning.

What advice would you give to current esthetic students about preparing for the real-world challenges of running a successful business?

My advice is to prioritize business education just as much as skincare training. Invest in learning how to market yourself, manage finances, and build client relationships—skills that are just as essential as mastering treatments. Seek out continuing education and stay curious through independent research to gain new perspectives. Social media is a powerful tool, so understanding how to leverage it effectively will set you apart. Finally, stay adaptable. The industry evolves quickly, and your ability to grow and learn beyond school will be key to building a thriving, sustainable business.

How important do you think continuous education is for estheticians, and what types of courses do you recommend?

Continuous education is essential in this industry. It keeps you updated

on new techniques, trends, and research, which elevates your services and client care. I recommend seeking out virtual or in-person courses in advanced skin treatments, holistic approaches like gut health, and business or marketing education to help estheticians grow their practices. People often underestimate the power of social media, so I would definitely take the time to get more confident in front of the camera to showcase your knowledge as well. I offer a variety of techniques, gut health, and social media virtual courses that I am so passionate about!

What success stories have you seen from estheticians who have applied your strategies for expanding their income?

Several estheticians who have implemented my strategies—through my Business + Branding Blueprint— have expanded their businesses by embracing personal branding on social media. Many talented estheticians are overlooked due to a lack of online presence, so I teach them how to overcome fear of failure and judgment to show up authentically. I encourage each esthetician to show more of their personality on social media, which builds more trust and deeper connections with potential clients. This approach has helped them grow their following, increase bookings, sell more retail, and launch new income streams like virtual consultations and skincare programs. I experienced firsthand success with this approach by growing my own Instagram and knew it could work just as well for others in the industry.

By focusing on a niche and showcasing your knowledge, you position yourself as an expert, which builds trust with clients.
