In the world of beauty, eyebrows hold incredible power – they can transform a face, boost confidence, and make a statement. For us skincare and spa professionals, getting eyebrow shaping and correction just right is an art form. Let's dive into some tried-and-true techniques and tips to help you work your magic and leave your clients feeling fabulous.
A thorough consultation is your secret weapon. Dive deep into your client's preferences, lifestyle, and desired look to craft eyebrows that truly reflect who they are. Ask as many questions as you feel you need to ask to cover all of your bases. A good place that I always tell my students to start with their client is “tell me a little about your brows.” Chat with your client about their preferences and maintenance routine to ensure they walk away with brows that feel uniquely theirs and that they feel confident they can maintain.
Crafting the Perfect Shape
Map out or envision the ideal shape for your client prior to beginning the service. Whether you prefer threading, waxing, or tweezing, eyebrow shaping is more about knowing which hairs you need to leave versus hair removal. The goal is always symmetrical, balanced brows.
Analyze your client's facial features, considering their face shape, eyebrow density, and natural arch. This personalized approach sets the stage for creating flattering brows for each individual client.
Fixing Flaws and Adding Flair
For clients with sparse or unruly brows, use grooming gels, pomades, highlighter, and even tinting or laminating to enhance fullness and tame wild hairs. Styling the brows also takes your eyebrow service to the next level, adding a nice finish to the brows you’ve created. (the same way hair stylists style their clients’ hair after a service)
Educate your client on the importance of consistent appointments. Clients should return every two to three weeks so that we can maintain the shape we’ve created and continue the process of their brow correction. When clients wait too long to come in for an appointment and there is a lot of regrowth, it’s impossible for us to perfectly replicate the brows they left with at their last appointment. Making sure they understand that all brow artists do things a little bit differently is important as well if they want to successfully continue the process of their brow correction.
6.
Stay ahead of the curve with the latest trends and techniques through classes, workshops, and practice.
In conclusion, perfecting eyebrow shaping and correction is about making people feel confident and beautiful. By taking a personalized approach, conducting thorough consultations, and staying up to date with the latest techniques, you'll leave your clients feeling like a million bucks.

Cellulite is not just an issue for menopausal women or individuals of a particular weight. According to the National Institutes of Health, it’s a skin condition that actually affects 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men - but as an aesthetic provider, you can help. There are many treatment options available, but for any treatment, you have to choose the right candidates. Look for dimpled or irregularly contoured appearance of the skin on the thighs, stomach, and buttocks.
As with any elective procedure, clients with chronic illnesses and use of anticoagulants (blood thinners) or chemotherapy should avoid treatment.
As collagen production is an important component with all of these treatments, as we get older our bodies have a lesser response to these treatments because one’s ability to produce collagen and mount an inflammatory response goes down. In that case, the esthetician needs to counsel older clients to go in with a mindset that it may or may not work the way they want it to. Or, it may work but more treatments may be required. We can’t beat the biology of poor collagen production.
What are the preferred treatment options?
Cellulite is created by the complex way different tissues in the body interact with each other. Fibrotic collagen bands tether the skin to underlying structures creating dimples. Fat cells surround and push against these bands making the dimples more prominent. Lax skin serves to further exaggerate the appearance by falling into the dimpling. Available treatments try to target these tissues in different ways.
Non-invasive treatments
Microwave treatments address all of these contributors. By reaching high temperatures in the subcutaneous layer, it dissolves the bands, destroys
the fat cells, and stimulates collage in the dermis for better skin integrity. Because of their unique interaction with tissue, the treatments are more comfortable than most. Radio frequency devices reach the subcutaneous layer, but heat from the outside in. Therefore, their main mechanism of action is stimulating collagen production in the skin and hiding underlying pathology.
Ultrasound treatments work primarily within the dermis, again stimulating the production of collagen.
Invasive treatments
Subcision involves using a sharp instrument to cut the collagen bands just under the skin
Injectables include the biostimulators poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and calcium hydroxyapatite to stimulate collagen production in the skin and mask the underlying cellulite.
Many people incorretly think that Cryolipolysis is a treatment for cellulite. While using cold temperatures does break down fat cells, it has little to no effect on the dimpling of cellulite.
Managing expectations and results Managing expectations of body treatments can be the most difficult part. It is important to talk with your client and be clear about anticipated out-
comes. Don’t overpromise. Be careful about treating people with unrealistic expectations or body dysmorphia. Additionally, as weight loss medications gain popularity, cellulite and body contouring procedures can be of great benefit. I would caution clients against spending money on these treatments until they’ve completed at least 75 percent of their weight loss goal.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be your client’s best bet to protect their treatment results, but cellulite is a progressive condition that worsens with age, so likely a maintenance program with supplemental treatments every six months to a year will also be beneficial.
Whatever cellulite treatment regimen you decide to offer, you’re helping make your clients more confident and comfortable in their own skin.

OF BODY TREATMENTS CAN BE THE MOST DIFFICULT PART.
This month, Sofia gives us the lowdown on her latest business venture.
1. Can you share a bit about your latest venture with us?
Yes, the mobile spa space is finally in the works! The camper had been in temporary use but now that we have it back, we’ve begun renovations. Right now, we are just tearing out unnecessary tables and wood to create a more open space. Once that’s complete, we’ll come up with design plans to set in motion. Then, of course, is the whole process of registering the business and camper!
2. How did you come up with the idea for a mobile business?
The idea for the mobile spa space actually came from my mom. Originally, I wanted to transform the shed in my backyard into a suite but I would’ve had to add a bathroom and that would’ve meant so many additional costs. The camper came with all the amenities and we have the option of traveling to those who can’t make it to us!
3. Why do you think mobile beauty services are a good option for today's clientele?
I think it’s a good option for those who maybe work from home or are full time parents. For example, if someone who works remotely wants to squeeze in a wax but they only have an hour lunch before they have to log back in, that’s not enough time to travel back and forth. This way, we can go to them! It just offers more flexibility for those who are stuck at work or home.
4. What mobile services do you plan to offer?
We plan to offer a full-service menu for estheticians. Waxing, makeup, facials, microdermabrasion, you name it! Maybe, if we have space and time, we could hire a nail tech as well!
I initially wanted to convert the back- yard shed into a suite, but adding a bathroom would have been too costly. The camper al- ready has all the ameni- ties, plus it allows us to travel to those who can't visit us!
5. What are the benefits to offering services on the go?
Offering services on the go allows people more flexibility and therefore they are more relaxed. They don’t feel as stressed as they would trying to make it to the spa. It also just provides more privacy. Some spa suites in salons tend to be noisy and there may be multiple people receiving services at once, but the camper is just one on one, offering more comfort and privacy to the client.
6. As you get your mobile business going, do you have a plan for growth?
As the mobile business is in the works, I plan on working it full time until my nursing clinicals. By then, my mom would most likely be working the hours that I would. The hope is to a build a clientele big enough to open an actual spa space but, in all honesty, I haven’t thought that far ahead because I don’t know where nursing might take me. My ultimate goal is to own a dermatology practice that offers esthetician services as well!

Gabe Lousada
What is your business called and where are you located?
I have my own business, Shimmer & Shine, which is a mobile business for makeup and hair based in Miami. I also work at a spa located in South Miami, Cici Skincare, where I perform esthetic services such as custom facials, peels, and the list goes on and on. My esthetician room is my safe place, super cozy and welcoming to make anyone feel at home.
Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician?
My esthetician journey started when I was 19, in 2019, and had no idea about skincare. I started breaking out really badly, which only got worse until I decided to start researching and trying to understand why I was breaking out. Once I realized I needed help, I immediately went to a dermatologist and an esthetician who helped me with the right tools. I then was able to clear my skin out and fell in love with it.
I started researching on my own about skin, ingredients, formulation, etc. At the time, I was office manager for a construction company and suddenly quit my job to pursue my esthetician career. I went to college in Jacksonville, Florida to get my license and started working at a MedSpa.
I did all the continuing education available on The Esthetics Academy and after feeling confident with my progress, I moved to Miami in 2023 to really grow in the industry. I’m confident in saying it was the best decision I ever made!
Our Marketing Director absolutely raves about the "Glass Skin" facial!
What inspired you to become an esthetician?
My own struggle with acne led me to want to take care of my skin and after I was able to clear it up, I realized how important that was for me and how I
would love to do that for others and bring back their confidence. Not only that, but there’s nothing that makes me happier than helping someone achieve their skin goals and feel great about themselves!
What is the core beauty philosophy that you stand by?
The best makeup is a beautiful and glowing skin! As a makeup artist, I know the importance of makeup and how it brings confidence to those who wear it, but once you realize that your skin is the canvas and you take care of it, you have more freedom to enhance your beauty with makeup, but not depend on it!
What is your favorite treatment?
It is so hard to pick one single treatment because I believe different treatments complement each other, but a good, glowing facial with dermaplaning is essential.
What brands do you use and why?
I use a few brands that I love. I fell in love with Herbal Skin Solutions before I even started using the products. I love the holistic side of it and the message that they carry touches my heart. We know how important it is to give back to the planet and the formulation is fabulous in these amazing products.
I also love Valmont, which is very rich and active. Last but not least, Circadia by Dr. Pugliese also carries amazing formulas.
What is your secret to beautiful skin?
Constant work and religious care! Our body is a high-end machine and needs constant care. Monthly facials on their own won’t save your life, you need constant home care. That’s why it is extremely important to a good esthetician who is not only sharing knowledge with their clients, but also recommending great custom home care.
What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why?
Combining different modalities and tools is essential in the beauty industry to enhance results. My favorite tools are definitely a great, professional grade LED panel, micro-current, and recently, the Hydrafacial machine.
What is your favorite part about working for your company?
Freedom! Managing my own schedule is my favorite part. Being able to balance work and self-care is a must for me. I work hard but I also relax and create hard.

1. What are the effects of menopause on the skin?
Menopause can cause various effects on the skin. It often leads to dryness due to decreased collagen production and loss of skin elasticity. This can result in wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, it may cause hot flashes, leading to flushed skin. Some women may also experience an increase in acne or facial hair growth.
2. What are the biggest factors in these changes? (hormonal, loss of estrogen, etc.)
The biggest change-maker here is, believe it or not, hormones. Estrogen has a major role in keeping our skin in top shape. But when menopause hits and estrogen levels decrease, we start seeing less collagen production and a reduction in skin elasticity. This can also

tweak how our skin produces oil. Most of my clients during menopause, including myself, start to notice more pronounced fine lines, wrinkles, and a certain lack of glow. But there are some products and skin treatments options to support the overall skin health, so please, don’t give up.
3. What skincare products are essential for aging skin?
A good nourishing moisture-rich moisturizer is crucial to combat dryness, while products that contain ingredients like retinol can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E can improve skin brightness and protect against environmental damage. A gentle, non-drying cleanser is also important for maintaining skin health. Lastly, don't forget sunscreen: protecting your skin from the sun is crucial at any age, but especially so during menopause when skin may be more vulnerable to damage.
4. What is the ideal skincare regimen for those going through menopause?
During menopause, hormonal changes can lead to dry skin, increased sensitivity, and pronounced expression lines. Therefore, the ideal skincare regimen for those going through menopause should focus on moisturizing, protecting, and nourishing the skin.
5. Does skincare during menopause differ from person to person?
Yes, but the main difference I've noticed in myself and my clients is a lack of elasticity. Remember, the drop in estrogen production compromises collagen production.
6. Are there any special considerations for acne brought on by menopause?
Absolutely, choosing non-comedogenic products can help prevent clogging of pores, and ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help reduce acne. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine
"Estrogen has a major role in keeping our skin in top shape. "
is also key, and keeping your skin hydrated is essential. If acne becomes severe, a dermatologist can provide personalized advice and treatment. Remember, it's all about finding what works best for your skin.
7. Are there any lifestyle changes to implement to help ageing skin?
Yes, lifestyle changes can significantly impact the health of your skin as you age. Healthy diet, exercise regularly, deep restful sleep, and managing stress are my few recommendations to manage the ups and downs of menopause symptoms.
