2 Welcome

GOODBYE, AND THANK YOU! 01

Mary-Ellen Proctor

WELCOME September: falling leaves, pumpkin pie, and other autumnal joys such as this fall issue of INFOCUS. In this latest edition we’re pleased to share a bit about our summer open house and consultation, which we held in preparation for our application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate; feedback we’ve heard from the community; recent project milestones; upcoming events; and a few other juicy tidbits. While I have you reading I really wanted to take a moment to recognize and thank the community for participating in our June/ July consultation program— from the open house, to the workshops—it was a great success, and we owe that to you! We had more than 300 people participate and provide us with valuable input that we have been considering as we continue to design our project. I know speak on behalf of all my colleagues at LNG Canada when I say that we look forward to continuing to work with the community so that the LNG Canada project reflects the interests and desires of Kitimat residents .

01: From left to right, our stellar summer students: Dan Harness, Sarah Maitland, Tasia Payne and Brayden Marleau.

Over the summer we were lucky to welcome some fine young Kitimat talent to the LNG Canada team: Brayden Marleau, Dan Harness, Tasia Payne and Sarah Maitland. We’d like to say a big thank you and wish them luck in the upcoming school year. We asked each of them to provide a little information about themselves to share with you and also what their most memorable moment was from their summer:

Dan Harness • 2nd year Police in Justice Studies at Thompson Rivers University • Goal is direct entry into the Military Police • His memorable moments at LNG Canada include meeting the Premier, travelling to Vancouver, and working with the local RCMP detachment in Kitimat and all the guys on site

•4 th year double major in Accounting and Finance at UNBC

What it was like working with LNG Canada over the summer? “We do one thing at a time, we do it very well, and then we move on to the next priority.”

•G oal is to become a CPA

Tasia Payne

•H is memorable moments working for LNG Canada were the trip to the BC Government’s LNG Conference in May and meeting Premier Christy Clark

• 2nd year in Business at Camosun College, looking to switch to Communications at Royal Roads

Brayden Marleau

BURGERS FOR BELIZE With bellies full of hotdogs and hamburgers, we were happy to have a chance to talk to the local community at our BBQ and open house on June 24. We had a terrific turnout, and everyone was willing to brave a bit of windy weather to have a burger and learn more about our project and the LNG facility we hope to build in Kitimat. We’ve hosted a few BBQs over the last while, and each time we’ve been helped out by a group of students between grades ten and twelve from Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School. This energetic young group has been helping at functions like ours to raise money for an educational trip to study the environment and culture in other parts of the world. John Sorenson, a Science teacher at Mount Elizabeth who will chaperone their upcoming trip to Belize in Spring 2016, tells us, “the last trip we did was to Costa Rica, and it was awesome. It really gave the kids a chance to experience nature and culture in a different part of the world. We visited a small local school too, and it gave them a new appreciation for what they have versus what kids in other parts of the world have.” LNG Canada is glad that we’re able to support a good cause, and when these guys have such big smiles on their faces and make such a mean burger, it certainly makes it easy! 02

• Recent graduate from Mount Elizabeth Secondary School, completed her foundation level millwright certification through Northwest Community College • Goal is to be a full level millwright • Her most memorable moment was a particular lunch that allowed her to meet a lot of people working with and for LNG Canada What it was like working with LNG Canada over the summer? “I learned a lot working for LNG Canada over the summer and it really opened my eyes about how businesses work.” 02: Marissa Cordeiro offers up a piece of cake at the BBQ and open house in June.

ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY

WE’RE LISTENING! WHAT WE’VE HEARD AND WHAT WE’RE DOING

From June 24 to July 15 this year, LNG Canada embarked on its latest round of community consultation, which began with a community open house and continued with a number of small group meetings. One of the highlights of the consultation was the unveiling of our 3D site model, which drew a huge crowd. Members of the LNG Canada team spoke with the community about everything from what LNG is, to the local benefits of the project.

“Since we were last out in the community, we have been working to develop updated project information, including the design of the facility, ways we can work together to address concerns we have heard,” said Susannah Pierce, LNG Canada’s External Affairs Director. “Community input provides us with valuable insight into what is important to consider as we move forward in our planning process and what we gathered during this most recent consultation will go a long way towards helping us further develop our plans.” So what specifically has LNG Canada heard while talking to the community? A number of things: The importance of providing local economic opportunities – both through direct employment and buying goods and services from local companies. LNG Canada is committed to encouraging a “hire local first” approach and will work together with its main contractor, CFSW LNG Constructors, to ensure locals have opportunities to become qualified to benefit from the B.C. LNG industry. The value of the natural environment, air quality and importance of the estuary to Kitimat. These are all concerns that LNG Canada takes very seriously and is diligently assessing as part of the environmental assessment. For example, we are exploring the potential establishment of an environmental fund to enhance environmental improvement and conservation in the area.

How much outdoor recreation and access to water are an important part of the way of life in Kitimat. Recognizing this, LNG Canada has committed to contributing funds towards the preservation and creation of long-term access to the water and other recreational activities in the Kitimat the area.

The need to manage our construction activities to minimize our impacts on the community. LNG Canada’s proposed worker accommodation village will be built in Kitimat’s industrial area and will offer workers a number of services to reduce impacts to the main community. We will also be developing a comprehensive housing strategy to help minimize impacts on housing in the community, which will include an easily expandable worker accommodation village.

The importance of minimizing the impacts of increased ships through north coast waters. We are developing potential mitigation measures including reduced vessel speeds of 8 to 14 knots when in sensitive coastal waterways. We’re also participating in a voluntary technical review to identify recommendations to support safe shipping.

01: The 3D model of our proposed site was unveiled during the June consultation and is now permanently on display at the Community Information Centre.

The list above is but a taste of what we’ve heard and what we are considering as we move forward with project planning! The LNG Canada project team will review all input received so that it can be considered in project planning and the Environmental Assessment process. The assessment, conducted by the provincial government through the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO), is an important step as we work towards our end goal of building a liquefied natural gas facility in Kitimat. We expect to file our application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate sometime in the fall of 2014.

MEET RUTH SULENTICH, SENIOR PUBLIC CONSULTATION SPECIALIST AT LNG CANADA 01

When Ruth first realized the magnitude of the LNG opportunity in northwest British Columbia, she knew she wanted to be part of that success story. With 20 years of experience in B.C.’s natural gas industry under her belt – primarily leading public consultation on capital projects – her draw to our project makes sense. Throughout her career she has worked with communities, special interest groups and First Nations, holding the important role of helping make sure that everyone’s input is considered.

Why did she decide to get involved with LNG Canada? “When my family and I visited Kitimat, we spoke to members of the community and learned how well thought of LNG Canada is in the community and how many local people support LNG development,” Ruth tells us. From there the pieces fell into place, and deciding that LNG Canada was the right employer and project opportunity was an easy decision. Ruth and her young family will be relocating to Kitimat from Kelowna in October, and are excited for their upcoming adventure. “Even at the young age of 3 and 4 the kids are excited about the move. As a family we are looking forward to exploring Kitimat and the northwest.”

“ As a family we are looking forward to exploring Kitimat and the northwest.”

Ruth recognizes the importance of having meaningful conversations with the entire community and incorporating the ideas of local experts into the overall solution for moving the project forward. “I enjoy talking with people in the community where I work, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the project.” 01: Ruth introduces her daughter Sofia (left) and son Cohen to beautiful Kitimat.
