Welcome

Good evening and welcome to our Centennial Celebration Season. We are so glad you could join us in commemorating this exciting milestone. After José Lobero’s 1873 Opera House eventually fell into a state of disrepair, renowned architects George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs were commissioned to design the new Lobero Theatre, which opened on August 4, 1924. Following the devastating 1925 earthquake, the Lobero became the standard upon which a great many of the newly constructed buildings were based.

Fast-forward one hundred years, and this majestic building has been named one of Architectural Digest’s “11 Most Beautiful Theaters in the World.” Registered as a state and city historical landmark, the Lobero is also Santa Barbara County’s first certified Green Theater, and the first historic building to earn this designation.

As the oldest continuously operating theater in California, and the 4th oldest performing arts theater in the country, the Lobero is known for helping to launch Hollywood legends, offering world-class jazz performances, and being the center for a robust program of regional performing arts.

Let us honor José Lobero’s legacy by fostering an atmosphere where creativity knows no bounds and where our local arts organizations can continue to grow, connect, and achieve their fullest potential. By continuing this vision, we commit to cultivating a thriving performing arts scene that both enriches our city and inspires future generations.

A heartfelt thanks to our loyal patrons and the Santa Barbara community for your continued support.

1924 ~ 2024 Commemorating An Award-Winning 100-Year-Old Building

By 1922, José Lobero’s Opera House had deteriorated significantly. This prompted the newly-formed Lobero Theatre Company to award George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs the commission to design a new theater, intended to be the home of the Community Arts Association – now known as the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA).

While Lutah Maria Riggs is credited with much of the Lobero’s interior design, including the stunning ceiling panels and Spanish inspired columns, it was George Washington Smith’s exterior Spanish Colonial Revival design that would ultimately become the “Santa Barbara look” post-1925.

THE BUILDING CENTENNIAL

In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Lobero Theatre, the Lobero Theatre Foundation will engage in a community awareness campaign honoring the contributions of George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs, while envisioning the enhanced beautification of the theater for the enjoyment of generations to come.
