We are honored to support one of the oldest theaters in America, Happy 150th

"One of the most beautiful theaters in the world"

A Year to Remember By Brett Hodges On a cold winter night in February 1873, a quarter of Santa Barbara’s population — some 800 people — gathered inside Giuseppe (José) Lobero’s newly completed Opera House for its grand opening. Dimly lit by gas lamps, the audience was treated to an Italian language opera, written by and starring Signore Lobero himself. Critics were greatly impressed with the opera, but were aghast at the behavior of the audience. “The outrageous and hideous cat-calls, shrieks and noise of the half-grown, rude boys at the concert on Saturday evening were simply intolerable, and Mr. Lobero will find it impossible to induce refined people to attend his concerts unless he calls in the police and relieves his audience of these insolent young fellows.” How Santa Barbara has changed. Exactly 150 years later — and at the kickoff event for the Lobero’s year-long Ovation Celebration — high winds caused a city-wide power outage just as homegrown rock star Jack Johnson was taking the stage. Cast into complete darkness, there were a few nervous laughs from the audience, and then something magical occurred. One after

another, patrons turned on their cellphone flashlights, illuminating the stage in a soft glow that must have rivaled the lumens of the Lobero Opera House's gas lamps. Whisperquiet in order to hear the unplugged singing voices and acoustic guitar, the audience was testimony to how Santa Barbara has grown in sophistication — and civility — since its raucous Opera House days. The Lobero’s magical 150 Year Ovation Celebration continued on February 22, 2023 with the unveiling of the Lobero Golden Eagle. The carved, gilt wooden eagle was originally perched in the wheelhouse of Cornelius Vanderbilt’s prized steamer, Yankee Blade. However, in 1854, the ship was unfortunately lost in a shipwreck off Point Arguello. Found a few months later floating in the kelp at Santa Rosa Island, the eagle soon made its way to Santa Barbara, where it was traded for a bottle of whiskey and hung above the bar at José Lobero’s Brewery Saloon on State Street. When Lobero opened his Opera House in 1873, the Golden Eagle was mounted above the stage. Today, the Lobero Golden Eagle has been fully restored, and greets visitors in the theater’s front foyer. One of the greatest surviving treasures of the California Gold Rush, the eagle is an extraordinary reminder of the Lobero’s rich history.

On May 20, 2023, the 150th Anniversary Celebration went open-air with a community block party concert featuring R&B legend Chubby Checker, made possible by the generosity of Earl Minnis. Performing from atop the Lobero’s front esplanade to an audience which filled Canon Perdido Street, Checker quickly had the crowd singing along and attempting all variations of “The Twist.” And what better way to celebrate a birthday than with an exciting surprise. In July 2023, the Ovation Celebration continued with the extraordinary honor of the Lobero being named “One of the 11 most beautiful theaters in the world” by Architectural Digest magazine. We can only imagine that José Lobero would be very, very proud.

The Passing of Lillian Lovelace January 16, 2024 Many years ago, when I first arrived on the scene at the Lobero, I had the opportunity to meet Jon and Lillian Lovelace. At the time, the theater was going through a difficult financial period and struggling to find its way. Jon and Lillian provided critical support to keep the lights on and the stage active, while encouraging us to build a broad base of support. They gave quietly but impactfully; it was their way. Shortly before Jon’s passing in 2011, I was able to convince them to become the first Luminaries of our newly formed Ghostlight Society. They normally eschewed the spotlight, but they understood that their example and commitment had helped to re-inspire the Lobero family, giving the Lobero stage new life. Lillian remained supportive through the years, always in the wings and available when called upon to give a hand. I will always remember my meetings with Jon and Lillian in the warmth of their living room. Each time, I left thinking I had just spent time with two of the most kind and caring philanthropists I had ever known. I will miss their thoughtful guidance, and their generosity of spirit. To learn more about how you can make a significant gift to endow our future, please contact Jim Dougherty at 805.679.6005, or jdougherty@lobero.org

The John C. Mithun Foundation Community Access Fund supports a vibrant arts scene and fosters a new generation of artists and audiences that will significantly impact the future of the industry, promoting the Lobero as an accessible stage for local arts.

The Heart & Rhythm of Santa Barbara for 150 Years. To commemorate our 150th Anniversary, the theater mounted a public celebration and awareness campaign to pay tribute to this remarkable landmark, and position the Lobero Theatre to be a prominent, integral, and essential stage for the performing arts in Santa Barbara well into the future. Many thanks to these supporters who have invested in the next 150 years here at the Lobero.

Keeping the light of live performance burning bright. For 150 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance, and music – a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behind-the-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theater from ever going dark.

MATT RODRIGUEZ By Anne Wilde Renowned local artist Matt Rodriguez brings a captivating blend of refined eccentricity and counterculture street art to the forefront. While studying media arts and web design at SBCC, he also acquired diverse skills working as a lab tech for both the ceramics and geology departments. His first mural, which he collaborated on with John Iwerks, can be found on the retaining wall behind the EBS building at City College. Rodriguez's current artistic endeavors showcase a versatile approach, encompassing pen and ink drawings, acrylics, oils, and mixed media on canvas. Rooted in street art within the Funk Zone, his works often take on a life of their own, embodying a metamorphic storytelling process inspired by the available mediums. Matt’s custom painting for the Lobero, titled “LoBerOh,” embodies an abstract cubism style. Influenced by renowned artists such as M.C. Escher and Keith Haring, Rodriguez often employs either a black and white palette, lots of

color, or monochromatic elements in his paintings. The simple icon of a little house is portrayed in many of his works, representing home – simplified into its minute form, but with a human-like playfulness. While observing some of Matt’s artwork, one may sense a type of Rorschach test “call to action,” encouraging viewers to create their own story of what they see. His images often suggest a reminder to appreciate each moment, celebrate life, embrace your community, "Do Stuff," and “Be You.” Rodriguez actively collaborates with local organizations and has been Co-Founder/Graphic Designer of Santa Barbara’s Lucidity Festival for the last 11 years. He aspires to extend his artistic impact globally through large-scale murals and installations, while fostering collaboration and supporting fellow artists. In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Matt was an Outdoor Adventure Guide for 11+ years, worked as an interior and tile design consultant, and he is currently a project manager in the Airstream renovation industry. Additionally, Rodriguez is a single father to his six-year-old daughter, Rocket Sue, after the loss of his life partner, Chelsea Bets Christenson, to cancer in September 2022. Matt is grateful for all the support he has received from the Santa Barbara community and beyond. To see more of his work, visit rodriguezartt.com. Matt can be found on social media platforms @Rodriguezartt #RodriguezArtt, is available for commissions of varying scales, and is expanding his brand onto apparel and textiles.

Cottage Health would like to congratulate The Lobero Theatre on their 150th anniversary.

1873 ~ 2023 José Lobero's Opera House Throughout 2023, the Lobero Theatre has celebrated its sesquicentennial. This historic treasure has been the cornerstone of the performing arts in Santa Barbara for 150 years — and counting. Opened in 1873 as José Lobero’s Opera House and rebuilt in 1924 as the Lobero Theatre, it is the 4th oldest continuously operating performing arts theater in the United States and the oldest in California. Generations of theatergoers have been entertained and inspired by countless appearances of illustrious greats gracing the Lobero’s stage. From Susan B. Anthony to Lucille Ball, Marcel Marceau to Mikhail Baryshnikov, Neil Young to Chubby Checker. The list is seemingly endless and the vision is to foster its enduring expansion.

1924 ~ 2024 Commemorating An Award-Winning 100-Year-Old Building By 1922, José Lobero’s Opera House had fallen into a state of disrepair, prompting the newly-formed Lobero Theatre Company to award George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs the commission to design a new theater intended to be the home of the Community Arts Association; what is now known as the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA). While Lutah Maria Riggs is credited with much of the Lobero’s interior design, including the stunning ceiling panels and Spanish inspired columns, it was George Washington Smith’s exterior Spanish Colonial Revival design that would ultimately become the “Santa Barbara look” post-1925 — when a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the town. The Lobero was one of the few buildings left standing, and Smith’s design became the standard upon which a great many of the newly constructed buildings were based. Fast-forward one hundred years and this majestic building has been named as one of Architectural Digest’s “11 Most Beautiful Theaters in the World.” THE BUILDING CENTENNIAL In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Lobero Theatre, the Lobero Theatre Foundation will engage in a community awareness campaign honoring the contributions of George Washington Smith’s and Lutah Maria Riggs’ legacy, while envisioning the enhanced beautification of the theater for the enjoyment of generations to come.
