An Ovation Celebration To commemorate this occasion, the Lobero
Theatre Foundation mounted a public celebration and awareness campaign to pay tribute to this remarkable landmark, positioning the Lobero Theatre to continue its role as an integral and essential stage for the performing arts in Santa Barbara for the next 150 years. 28, I spent ve and a half hours waiting in line for tickets. My husband and Jack Johnson I started at 7:45 a.m., on the chilly sidewalk outside the Lobero Theatre, caffeinated and humming Johnson’s song “Banana Pancakes.” We four tickets (only two were there to buy tickets per person were allowed for this special event) and planning to bring our 10- and 13-year-o ld boys, who had grown up on his local surf vibes. and I, both graduates My husband of UCSB, feel like Jack Johnson is singing about the “DLG” (De la Guerra us, with lyrics about Dining Commons) and meeting his wife with feet covered with tar balls. In celebrating our 150th Anniversary, the Lobero team had ambitious goals to present much larger acts than the 604-seat room had been accustomed to via it’s Ovation Presents series of programming. This inspiration led to many impressive performances, but perhaps none were as “buzz worthy” as the Jack Johnson concert on the eve of the Lobero’s birthday this year (2.21.23). Held on a stormy Santa Barbara evening, in front of an audience whose tickets were only made available via in-person purchase, Jack and his band were faced with a tricky set of circumstances, yet ultimately turned a challenging scenario into an unexpected night to remember. Event opener Zach Gill was minutes into his set when the power went out all across downtown Santa Barbara due to heavy winds. What happened next was unrehearsed and thrilled both concert goers and attending staff as well. Zach played through the darkness, while cell phones, one after another from the audience, began collectively lighting the stage. Outside of that modern convenience, Jack and his band joined Zach on stage and played their entire set acoustically without What an amazing any amplification or stage lighting – timeless memory in conditions that were akin to what which will always be attending a show at the Lobero might have been in 1873, when the tied to the theater’s theater first opened. th

Access to the Lobero We did a lot more than just celebrate 150 years of the Lobero. Our Ovation Campaign resulted in monumental growth in our endowment, specifically targeted to providing local arts institutions awards via subsidies. This past year marked the creation of the incredibly impactful John C. Mithun Community Access Fund Endowment (CAF). Interest from this endowment will be awarded to our community arts partners, both new and old!
The Lobero’s Golden Eagle, hanging in the theater’s lobby, bore witness to some of the most important moments in our nation’s history. In 1853, the Yankee Blade side-wheel steamer made its inaugural voyage with the majestic gilded bird perched above the ship’s wheelhouse. Sadly, a deadly disaster struck on its third excursion and the Eagle was the only remnant salvaged. Years later, it made its way to Santa

It was eventually found and donated to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum – who restored it to its original splendor, and have graciously loaned the magnificent artifact to the Lobero for its 150th Anniversary Celebration. 3

Resources and Management 2022-23 marked our 2nd full year of activity following the pandemic shutdown of 2020. The theater was busy 180 days, which is 7% more activity than last year. We sold nearly 40,000 tickets to 90 performances, and served more than 2,000 students through our Youth & Community Outreach Programs. We balanced our budget, added to our cash reserves and addressed some critical capital needs, including adding solar panels to help offset our carbon footprint. We are committed to being stewards, not only of the building, but of the community’s trust and ongoing investment in our mission and programs.

In addition to the operating figures shown in these charts, the Lobero Theatre Foundation focused on raising dedicated endowment funds to ensure the building’s ongoing maintenance and improvement, and to provide subsidies to our community partners (see page 3). To date, we have raised $5.3 million in gifts and pledges toward our Building Maintenance and Community Access Fund endowments. These funds are central to our mission to preserve and enhance this historic building, while ensuring it remains accessible to the Santa Barbara organizations that call the Lobero home.
1873 ~ 2023 José Lobero's Opera House Throughout 2023, the Lobero Theatre has celebrated its sesquicentennial. This historic treasure has been the cornerstone for the performing arts in Santa Barbara for 150 years — and counting. Opened in 1873 as José Lobero’s Opera House and rebuilt in 1924 as the Lobero Theatre, it is the 4th oldest continuously operating performing arts theater in the United States and the oldest in California. Generations of theatergoers have been entertained and inspired by countless appearances of illustrious greats gracing the Lobero’s stage. From Susan B. Anthony to Lucille Ball, Marcel Marceau to Mikhail Baryshnikov, Neil Young to Chubby Checker. The list is seemingly endless and the vision is to foster its enduring expansion.
1924 ~ 2024 Commemorating An Award-Winning 100-Year-Old Building By 1922, José Lobero’s Opera House had fallen into a state of disrepair, prompting the newly-formed Lobero Theater Company to award George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs the commission to design a new theater intended to be the home of the Community Arts Association; what is now known as the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA). While Lutah Maria Riggs is credited with much of the Lobero’s interior design, including the stunning ceiling panels and Spanish inspired columns, it was George Washington Smith’s exterior Spanish Colonial Revival design that would ultimately become the “Santa Barbara look” post-1925 — when a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the town. The Lobero was one of the few buildings left standing, and Smith’s design became the standard upon which a great many of the newly constructed buildings were based. Fast-forward one hundred years and this majestic building has been named as one of Architectural Digest’s “11 Most Beautiful Theaters in the World.”
THE BUILDING CENTENNIAL In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Lobero Theatre, the Lobero Theatre Foundation will engage in a community awareness campaign honoring the contributions of George Washington Smith’s and Lutah Maria Riggs’ legacy, while envisioning the enhanced beautification of the theater for the enjoyment of generations to come. 5
