IN FOCUS

Back to Us Jordyn Pollard, Award Winning Canadian Country Musician Local to Lloydminster Sits and Shares Her Recent Success Story by Kimberly Steier Photography by Kimberly Kalon Marketing and Photography

AUTHENTIC. INSPIRING. CONTAGIOUS. DOWN TO EARTH. SENSITIVE ROMANTIC. All traits that pour out of the soul of this 19-year-old talent powerhouse. It is obvious that she is naively unaware of how incredibly talented and influential she is.

A

As a photographer and coordinator of events, our paths have crossed on several occasions. Which each encounter I learn something new about this humble young artist. Despite her age, this young woman has worked incredibly hard learning not only how to write, collaborate, perform and how the music industry works as a whole. All while

juggling the same things that most 19-yearolds do: college classes, dating life, family life and of course COVID. Pollard’s single “Good On Me” made the Top 100 on BDS and continues to garner airplay. Her single “Back To Us” has reached the Top 50 country songs on the Billboard Canada chart that also earned her the honour of being named the first-ever Stingray Music Trending Track Artist. Our interview was refreshing, unscripted and gave a great insight into the mind of this gifted musician, born and raised in Hillmond, Saskatchewan. Here is a small fragment of that interview:

So real you can feel it. Jordyn is one of those artists that convey emotion so real you can feel it. She draws on her raw emotions and does an amazing job sharing them through her music.

Q: Can you tell us how old were you when you first started [In the music industry] and about the process of turning your passion into a professional career? I’ve been performing professionally since I was about 14. That is when it kind of all started. But for me, music has always been a part of my life.

And it never was expected, no one in my family was musical. My parents are not really musicians. [She continues] ..... My mom says that I was singing before I could even talk basically, I was probably two or three and started singing Shania Twain and Hilary Duff. And it just grew from there to Taylor Swift.” “I would dress up

and just reenact all of these different performances that these artists did on award shows. And that is kind of how I built my craft I have been in guitar lessons and singing lessons. It just never really stopped. And I don’t think that I can ever let it go now. It’s just kind of inside of me. I started recording YouTube videos and everything at the age of 14-15 when I was in high school, and it kind of just built from there. I joined my management teams through all my entertainment (performances). And that was a really monumental moment in my career. We’ve done a lot of great things with my manager, Angie Morris. She’s done

so much for me, and God has given me so many opportunities. And it’s been it’s been a whirlwind the last few years, but it’s been lots of fun. Do you play any other instruments other than guitar? I play piano and a little bit of ukulele but I always forget. I’ll play for like a week and I’ll love it and think that it’s my next thing and then I’ll

stop and then I’ll be done for a few months. And I’ll forget everything. Let’s talk for a second about the songs that you have released. So your newest song that you just released was Back to Us and it has been winning awards. At this time, I was graduating high school. I’m just getting ready to graduate and I kind of wanted a song that symbolized that. And this song “ Back to Us”, although not necessarily about graduating was pitched. It’s about a romantic relationship that ends and you kind of want to go back to it. But I think that it can stand for so much more. And I feel like a lot of people can take it into whatever whether it’s

going back to before COVID happened or going back to a friendship. I think that it is really relevant right now. The song was written by Abby Cone, Mark Bright and Victoria Banks. Victoria Banks is Canadian, I’m sure some of you have heard some of her music. And it is a song that I really related to. And I’m so glad that we recorded it and released it. It’s been doing really well on theradio. We were the first ever to win the Stingray Trending Track Award with the song which means that it was playing on all of their broadcasting country stations around Canada, which was pretty amazing. One of those stations include Real Country 95.9 here in Lloydminster.

I really enjoyed listening to your album, not just because we were interviewing, but just because I found it really relatable. I want to talk about your other songs that you also have, because ‘Back to Us’ is doing amazing, but your other songs are also incredibly catchy and are getting a lot of traction. Tell us about Good On Me. This song was the first song that we released from the album, and also the first single we released to radio. It was written by Thomas Archer. He also has co-written on ‘Loving on You’ by Luke Combs. Hannah Ellis and Curtis Gibbs. They were also writers on the song and I love them all. I’m so excited that we got this song. This song really spoke to me. I’ve never done online dating like Tinder and stuff but and I think I’m almost scared to a sense. But yeah, so this this song really kind of related to that and kind of my dating life thus far in my life. I just

would always start talking to someone I’d be like, Oh, no, I just don’t really dig you. I just like you’re just not, you’re not good on me. You’re not and this song. As soon as I heard it, I was like, Oh my god, this is me. 100% I want to talk about your single Boomerang inside. No, mostly because everybody in their life has had that couple on Facebook that goes, relationship goes from interrelationship too complicated to single to interrelationship to complicated single one of those cycles where they just can’t seem to figure out if they’re together or not together, and they’re pulling a boomerang. I honestly think this should be the theme song for so many people. Country music lovers are not this theme song is definitely for them. And so I’m hoping you can tell all your viewers whether they’ve heard it or not a little bit about “Boomerang”. “...This song is a super fun

song. And the first time we heard it, it’s actually ...” Boomerang is just about that person that keeps coming back. Whether it’s a friendship or a romantic relationship. I feel like we can all relate to that. I’ve had many friendships in my life where you’re fighting, and then you feel like that person just not right for you. You shouldn’t be keeping them around. But then you always go back to them because Oh, you missed them, where you’re just not willing to go through that whole process of letting someone go. It’s a super fun song. A lot of people get it stuck in their heads. So I encourage you all to go and listen to it. It was my second single and I’m so excited to have it on the EP. So the last song I want to talk about, I’m so excited for you to tell everyone about that kind of love, mostly because you wrote it and created it. So this one was your baby, wasn’t it?

It is. This song I wrote when I was 15.... I wrote because, well like I’ve told you Kim, I’m a hopeless romantic and I always have been. I think this song kind of driven by that. I love watching 80s movies like Pretty in Pink and 16 candles. Love those. So I watched these movies and I just have always wanted that. Not that it’s realistic to have a guy with a boombox outside of your window, but you do want someone who gives you that kind of love. It’s just always kind of been my dream in my head - the perfect dates: like going to a drive in movie and watching Grease. I love Grease.... You want someone who gives you their jacket when you’re cold. Or you can dress up and go to the diner and have milkshakes and share milkshakes like it’s so it’s so Riverdale-esque.

I imagine it’s gotta be pretty surreal to be listening to the radio and hear yourself on it for the first time Technically the first time I heard myself was at the radio station before I was doing an interview. And that was at Moose Jaw Country 100.7. I was being interviewed with Courtney Fielder. She’s just amazing. Such a sweet lady. That was also my first interview ever. We sat in the room and I got to hear my song before it actually came on. And that was super cool. But for me just driving around not expecting it at all. I was I think I heard “Good on Me.” I was driving home from school. This is before the lockdown.

Watch Jordyn Pollards Single: Back to Us.

Watch Jordyn Pollards Single: Boomerang

So I was driving home from the college. And I was stopped at a red light and my song came on. And actually one of my good friends was sitting in her car right by me at the stoplight and I rolled my window down and said “ Oh my god, the songs on the radio!!!!” And it was on it was on Lloyd 95.9 . So that was super awesome!

Although they do not have a running tally of the amount of animals that have been rescued and rehomed in that time, it is easy to estimate that it is easily over 50,000 animals. In 2019 alone they sheltered, provided a temporary home to 880 stray, surrendered and abandoned animals.

It’s a Common Misconception our local SPCA, and any other city SPCA is not part of a bigger organization. None of the SPCA are connected. BUSINESS

The Art of the

FAMILY Business

Being in business for over 50 years, the Spiro’s family know a thing or two about the secret to success. Read how Elenee Young, a third generation Restauranteur views the key to success and longevity in business. Written by Elenee M. Young

eing a third generation restauranteur can be altogether daunting and rewarding. There is a strong legacy to keep alive and yet a whole new world of ever-changing evolution that awaits me at every corner. A general rule of thumb for those in family business is “never get comfortable”. Just when you think things are stable and on the straight and narrow, life happens. There’s a family fight in the kitchen (yes those happen), someone gets sick and someone else has to pick up their slack, or little fourth-generationers need a little more discipline. Sometimes if you’re really lucky, it all happens at once. I’m probably not selling you on this family business thing, am I? That’s ok, Sales have never been my strong suit anyway. What I do want to tell

B

20

you is how important it is to create a family business anywhere you are. No, you may not be the third generation or a blood relative to the owner or founder. Blood relation is merely the biological substance that tethers you together. I mean the strong atmosphere that surrounds a healthy family business. I’m talking about taking your work relationships so personally, that you consider each and every member a part of your family – although some may seem respective. It’s art, yet it takes zero talent.

The Village I’ve worked multiple jobs throughout my lifetime and although there were great opportunities within those jobs, not all of them possessed the family-like aspect of what I was truly used to at the restaurant. I was considered an employee who clocked in, did the work,

you together. I mean the strong atmosphere that surrounds a healthy family business. I’m talking about taking your work relationships so personally, that you consider each and every member a part of your family...” - Elenee Young

then clocked out and went home. But what I desperately craved was the atmosphere that was so close to my heart – the one I grew up surrounded by (practically 24/7). One where, as an employee, you have a say and you play a valuable part in the business ecosystem. One where hysterical laughter would follow hurtful tears from a bad customer experience. One where in the middle of a chaotic Friday night, someone stops what they’re doing to run across the street for community donuts. I needed that, and frankly, we all need that in our places of employment. How sad it must be for the millions of people who go to work just for a paycheck. They have no community structure, they have no “village” to make their jobs supportive.

The Foundation of Success I can’t say I know a lot of people who are truly passionate about hosting, serving tables, washing dishes, or

prepping dry ribs. Some would even call it a “dead-end job”. There isn’t much room for promotion and the smell that follows you at the end of the day is not glorious – but I can confidently say that, contrary to popular belief, passion for the job isn’t always what makes a job successful. No, it’s so much more than that. It’s about being passionate for the community that you surround yourself with for 8 hours a day. It’s about learning some basic words in Tagalog to communicate with your fellow waitress. It’s about taking the extra few steps to scrape the plates so that the dishwasher has one less task. It’s about greeting our staff with a smile when they walk through the doors and thanking them when they leave. When we begin to wrap our minds around this foreign language of “Work Family”, we will start to see a chain reaction of employees, volunteers, staff members, localeyll.ca | February 2021

Three Generations Strong For over 50 years the Spiro’s Family has been serving Lloydminster and surrounding area in the restaurant industry. Pictured from L-R: Maria (daughter of Spiro) Spiro and his Wife Tina, and Elenee Young (Daughter of Maria).

and co-workers who become passionate about their so-called “dead-end” job – which is actually the foundation of the longevity in a successful business.

The Key to Success I mentioned above that being part of a family business can be rewarding. This is something that I am just starting to scratch the surface of myself, but I

know that if you ask Spiro about how proud he is of his lifelong business success, he will owe it to 3 things: 1. God 2. His staff 3. His customers. This may come as a surprise to you, or maybe it’s totally obvious. But for myself, I know that running that restaurant was never a solo gig for him, and so it won’t be for me. Each moving part serves a vital purpose in the success of a family-run business, and if it weren’t for each and every staff member that we have presently and have had in the past, there would be no Spiro’s!

Involvement Starts WIthin This year, we were so honoured to have been the recipients of the coveted ABEX award for Community Involvement. Of course, we were both shocked

and excited the moment we found out – but as the news began to sink in, we recognized that community involvement, for us, actually started in our own community within the restaurant. It was only natural for the atmosphere to manifest itself outside of our brick and mortar establishment. We wanted everyone we came into contact with catch this vision of “family” that we have worked so hard to create in our own space. Being healthy community members felt like second nature because it was already at the center of our restaurant. It’s a simple thought, but it takes a lifetime to build up on it – and I am so glad I get to add another brick onto our family business every day.

We are pleased to announce that Elenee Young and the Spiro’s Family will be monthly contributors in Locale Yll Magazine!

Travel the world from home As families try to come to grips with Zoom classes and remote education in the wake of a global pandemic, a new computer application offers a unique opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children in exploring foreign countries and learning about other cultures. Country of the Week is a subscription-based, online tool that provides a weekly introduction on a specific country, along with printable activity sheets and family-friendly video recommendations

for families to share in exploring new worlds together. Priced at just four dollars per month with an annual subscription, Country of the Week is earning rave reviews from educators, parents and children for its role in bringing families together to explore the world around them. The program also helps kids enhance their reading and geography skills, while further educating them about the

history, people, food, plants and animals of a different country each week. Country of the Week was developed by a Canadian man named Dave Ternier who grew concerned about the growing division in society and the impact that the news might have on his young daughters’ understanding of the world. He committed to giving his

girls exposure to all 200 countries in the world, one week at a time. Since no program of its kind existed online, Dave created the solution himself. “Giving children perspective to see through the noise is huge,” said Ternier. “There’s a big wide world out there to explore and I wanted my girls to have a better understanding of the planet as a whole.” Ternier says he was also motivated to help educate his kids about the value of world travel. “I wanted them to know that we are not a world apart from each other. We are all so much closer than we think. And travel— whether in a literal or virtual sense—is one of the best ways there is to help us better understand and appreciate what’s good about the world.”

“My students are learning about and gaining an appreciation for the world we live in. They love looking at maps, exploring the wonders of the world, seeing new and exotic animals, and experiencing different cultures. By educating children about other countries and cultures in the world, we are creating global citizens who have an understanding of people and are accepting of differences. I like how COTW provides an opportunity for the students’ interests and curiosities to direct the path we take with each country.” - P. Bowles localeyll.ca | February 2021

How fast does it work?

would like to introduce one of our most cutting-edge laser treatments, Warm Sculpting by Sculpsure.

How long does it take to have this treatment? This treatment was designed with the modern day working professional or busy parent in mind. With virtually no downtime, this quick treatment can be done over your lunch break. It can be done in as little as 25 minutes. How does it work? This non-invasive body contouring machine uses Hyper thermic laser technology to safely blast fat cells by elevating the subdermal temperature which in turn damages the structure of the cells that are then eliminated by your body’s lymphatic system.

This 25 min treatment is completely customizable to your desired outcome. A series of treatments is recommended for best results with patients seeing results in as little as 6 – 12 weeks post treatment.

Who would be the ideal candidate? The ideal candidate for this treatment will already be at or near their ideal body weight. Living a healthy lifestyle, with a good diet and regular exercise, that have areas of concern that are not being responsive to diet and exercise.

localeyll.ca | February 2021

Is it permanent? Although this is not a weight loss treatment, the results are permanent fat loss reduction with the elimination of up to 24% of fat cell’s in the areas treated.

Book in for a complimentary consultation to see if this is the right treatment for you.
