March is the month where you can enjoy the last winter days, and yet prepare for the long-awaited spring. Time to start planting seeds for spring, and time to take advantage of the warm weather and head outside with your family. Stretch your legs, walk your dogs, skate at the park, and take advantage of all the wonderful outdoor areas Lloydminster has to offer. This month we focus on positive things that are continuing to happen in our community despite the challenges that social distancing and COVID present. Take time to see the good and participate in activities that are available to all of our citizens.
determination and acts of courage of individuals who have played an extraordinary role in advancing gender equality in their communities. We have incredible women and organizations within our community that are not only supportive but are also actively involved in this important issue. Take time to read the section about the Women’s Day activities that are happening right here in Lloydminster. We also encourage you to celebrate the women in your life. Many women do not recognize or identify themselves as having made any change towards gender equality. Change is made by leading by example, and through small acts of courage, and by Quite often the change-makers are not the ones seen featured in magazines. They may be the woman working in a male-dominated industry, a mother who chooses to dispute her wages, or perhaps simply a housewife that takes time to exercise her right to vote. Every woman matters, take the day to celebrate them! We are very excited to see changes coming, not just the weather, but also within our magazine. As the months continue, our magazine is on track to grow and evolve. Follow us online, and keep up to date to see all the new additions and positive things that are happening in our community.
This year International Women’s Day will be celebrated on March 8 and this day gives us all an opportunity to reflect on the progress being made towards achieving gender equality and celebrates the

Autism Service Dogs are trained to provide support, companionship, safety, and assurance to human partners and their families.Evidence suggests that Autism Service Dogs may increase the human partner’s self-esteem, ability to communicate, and ability to empathize. These dogs may help with sleep disturbances, reduction of anxiety, and sensory regulation.

• Help with self-soothing during melt-downs. The tactile stimulation, whether by petting, hugging, or having the dog actually lie on the child, can help the child learn the skills of calming themselves. • Socialization (including serving as a “social bridge”, so as children and adults come over and ask about the dog, the child with autism is prompted to answer. The parent should not answer questions but should refer all inquiries to the child. Thus with the dog, rather than having just the parent or teacher try to bring the child out of their own world, the entire community is talking to the child.)

Vitamin C R E D U C I N G
S I G N S
O F
A G I N G
Nouveau Laser and Aesthetic Centre Vanessa Arriagada, Clinical Director of Nouveau Laser and Aesthetic explains the benefits and science of skin care products formulated with Vitamin C. What is Vitamin C Vitamin C is an acidic serum that helps slow signs of aging. This anti-aging, damage-repairing and UV protecting agent allows powerful antioxidants to perform skin-brightening, hyperpigmentation-correction, while also evening out your skin tone. Why should I add this to my skincare routine? Not only does this incredibly effective serum provide skin brightening action, it also helps to protect your skin from free radicals. This highly acidic serum, when applied topically, triggers your skin to “heal” itself by accelerating the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are important protein fibers that help keep your skin firm and healthy, literally keeping it from sagging off your body. How do I choose the right Vitamin C serum? Checking the ingredient list is key. When applying something topically to your skin you want to make sure you are choosing quality products because your skin is one of your body’s largest organs. When looking through your ingredient list you want the Vitamin C to be in the form “L-Ascorbic Acid USP.” L-Ascorbic Acid is the form of Vitamin C that is bioavailable to our body – it means our cells can properly absorb it and we can get the maximum benefits from the product.
STYLE MAGAZINE-2020
|
“The “USP” designation means that that the ingredient is 99.9% pure. USP products ensure you’re getting a consistently strong, effective product bottle to bottle. Each Vivier antioxidant serum contains between 8%-12.5% L-Ascorbic Acid USP, depending on which you choose. “ Can Vivier promise a pure product? The short answer is yes. *Vivier has a patented technology called the Intradermal Delivery System or IDS. Vivier’s IDS allows L-Ascorbic Acid USP to penetrate deep into the dermis which is a huge differentiating factor when comparing Vivier serums to other products. In clinical trials, Vivier serums had 4x the penetration into the dermis than the leading competitor.* What color should Vitamin C be? Vitamin C is unstable in its purest form. When purchasing Vitamin C, it should be almost clear, if not completely. Over time Vitamin C serums will often oxidize. They will turn yellow/ orange to brown. Once the oxidization has happened you should avoid applying it to your skin. Find the right products for your skin by booking a complimentary consultation with one of our skin specialists at Nouveau Laser and Aesthetic Centre. www.VivierSkin.ca for more product information.

SPIRO’S HAS BEEN SERVING THE LLOYDMINSTER COMMUNITY FOR OVER 50 YEARS.
COMMUNITY over Competion I’ve been a resident of Lloydminster my whole life. Well, except that one time I was shipped off to boarding school… but that’s another article for another time! There have been some trying times in Lloydminster’s history that I’ve been a witness of, but the most notable I would say, is the year of 2020. There was an economic recession, a global viral pandemic, a global mental health pandemic, and a whirlwind of global mayhem. We watched America lose her mind and grieved the loss of normalcy for the unforeseeable future. But Lloydminster?
WRITTEN BY ELENEE MARIA YOUNG
We held on. And not on a surface level kind of ‘community support ’way. We blazed a trail of community support that will forever change the way we do business. So what made it so different than any other business year? How did we stay open? How did we break records and see innumerable growth? Simply put, we said goodbye to competition. I mean, we’ve been doing this at our restaurant for a long time. Which, I think is obvious.

A Stagnant Community Is a Dying Community
w w w . l o c a l e y l l . c a
What kind of healthy city has only one restaurant anyway? Diversity is a sure sign of municipal growth and watching each of our treasured eating establishments come out on top of the province wide shut down was incredible to watch. I’m not blinded by our situation. I know that there were casualties and there continues to be casualties in every sector of business. But I’ve never been so confident in the business community of Lloydminster. Seeing everyone come together and support, promote, and encourage local has definitely changed the game for us as a small business. One of the greatest things I witnessed this last year was the unprecedented solidarity between businesses – some of which were even in the same sector. To see other businesses promoting each other brought me so much hope for the Lloydminster that my children will know. It’s NOT dog eat dog or survival of the fittest. We’ve become so far removed from that mentality that other communities are drawn to Lloydminster and investors are wanting to invest in Lloydminster. Oh, did you think it was because of our beautiful scenery that money is being put into Lloydminster? Sorry to burst your bubble. It’s not even the opportunity as much as it is the healthy business community that keeps Lloydminster from becoming stagnant. A stagnant community is a dying community.

Paint Protection
DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROTECTION
Wax / Sealant
Ceramic Spray
Wax/ sealant has been around since cars were invented. Wax is exactly what it’s called, “wax”. It’s a paste that is usually hand-applied with a soft applicator let cure then wiped off leaving behind a thin layer of protection. Very easy for the DIY and inexpensive. Wax helps prevent fading, helps with cleaning, enhances gloss, hydrophobic (water beading) and is easy to install. The downfalls of wax are its short life span, 1-6 months depending on the environment, no protection against tree sap, bird droppings, or chemicals. No scratch or rock chip protection and will swirl the paint if not installed properly.
This is the next generation of wax. There are many products on the market that claim to be Ceramic spray wax but the quality varies greatly. The quality of the product isn’t determined by price, don’t fall for marketing. A good ceramic spray wax should have a SIO2 rating, this is the amount of silicate (ceramic) the product has. Easy for DIY if directions are followed. Has all the benefits of wax but is more durable, very high gloss shine, enhanced hydrophobics, chemical resistant, stays clean longer ( bugs don’t stick), and can be applied to the entire vehicle including plastics, glass. Downfalls of ceramic spray wax, short life span 3-6 months depending on the environment, no protection against tree sap, bird droppings, scratches or rock chips and no 9H rating (see Ceramic Coating for explanation).
Paint Protection Film (3M) Paint protection film is a polyurethane film that acts as a barrier to prevent minor scratches, scuffs and rock chips. It can be applied to pretty much any painted surface on the vehicle, from just the bumper to the entire vehicle. There have been some major advancements in PPF in the last few years, self-healing, no more yellowing, and ceramic properties. Like any paint protection PPF is a sacrificial layer that can be removed in the event there is damage and hopefully leave the paint undamaged. PPF provides the highest level of protection for painted surfaces and when combined with a ceramic coating you get the ultimate in protection.

Ceramic Coating
Downfalls to PPF. Usually applied to the front 1/3 of the vehicle leaving the rest unprotected and leave a visible where the film ends, can be applied to the entire vehicle but that can cost upwards of $6000. The film should be replaced every 7-10 years to prevent the glue from damaging the paint. PPF is very difficult to install and can peel if not done properly.
With a proper ceramic coating, you get extreme gloss, hydrophobics that make your vehicle virtually self-cleaning and can last from 6 months to a lifetime. It is recommended to have the coating inspected yearly and a topup coat applied. We coat more than just the paint, we can coat the glass, wheels, brake callipers, chrome, and plastic. An interior package can be added which protects leather or textile seats, dash, console carpet etc. This helps prevent fading, stains and makes it easier to clean. Ceramic coating can be used in your home to protect your furniture, countertops, bbq even prevent soap scum in the shower. If you coat your exterior windows all you will need to clean them is a garden hose or mother nature.
The Science behind Ceramic Coatings
C. C Continued The list of items you can coat is endless, from making your shoes water-resistant to scratch-proofing your cell phone or watch. The hydrophobic qualities can make almost any surface water resistant and prevent fading As amazing as ceramic coating sounds it does have its downfalls. It is very difficult to install and if not installed properly it can be very expensive to remove and do properly. The upfront cost can detour some but keeping your vehicle looking new longer and having to wash it less pays for itself. One question we get about ceramic coating is can it be removed, yes it can. It can be removed by polishing it off.
This is where I get to be technical and use big words. Ceramic coating is a liquid nano polymer that chemically bonds to the surface producing a rigid nanoglass substrate providing an indefinite layer of protection. A term you will hear a lot when people talk about ceramic coating is 9H. Science class time, 9H is based on the MOH scale of hardness with diamonds being a 10H. So what does this mean? No, you don’t get a diamond-hard surface if you apply 9H.
LOCALE YLL MAGAZINE MARCH 2021

CUSTOMS
W W W. L O C A L E Y L L . C A
You can get up to a 9H hardness but this is dependant on how hard the paint is on the vehicle or what it is being applied to. Every vehicle manufacturer has a different hardness of paint making some very easy to scratch. This is why having a ceramic coating with 9H is very important to help make your vehicle scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof. 9H is also chemical resistant, acid and alkalis, and protects against bird droppings, tree sap, and water spots.

The Government of Canada has chosen the Nation wide theme for IWD to be #FeministRecovery. This International Women’s Day, we invite you to take a pledge to advance gender equality and support an inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic by using #FeministRecovery on your social media accounts. An inclusive recovery offers the opportunity to advance gender equality and provide economic and social stability for all Canadians. Our government has identified fundamental gaps in our society and disproportionately impacted those who were already marginalized, vulnerable or struggling. On every front, the COVID-19 pandemic has eroded hardfought gains to gender equality. From layoffs to lack of child
care to increased unpaid work to the rise of domestic violence, women have been most deeply impacted by the health and economic crisis. of child care to increased unpaid work to the rise of domestic violence, women have been most deeply impacted by the health and economic crisis.

The Government of Canada is working to create an Action Plan for Women in the Economy to help women get back into the workforce and ensure a feminist, intersectional response to this pandemic and recovery. This Plan will be led by a diverse task force of experts and guide a whole-of-government approach. They encourage you to start a conversation with our social media shareables on your networks and channels using the hashtag #FeministRecovery.
Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It is about changing the way the world percieves that strength. - G.D Anderson

International Women’s Day Celebrate Locally in Lloyminster
Startup Lloydminster is asking you - “WHO IS A WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE THAT HAS INSPIRED YOU AND WHY?” Your submission/nomination is important for several reasons: 1. A way to recognize & celebrate women in our community. 2. We plan to showcase all the submissions in a colorful art mural which we will build and display on the windows of the Startup office. 3. We will donate $5 for each submission to the Lloydminster Interval Home ( https://intervalhome. org/for-the-interval-store/) . The more submissions, the more money donated! So how can you submit/nominate? Right on our website: https://www.startuplloyd.com/iwd Startup Lloydminster is ALSO putting together a IWD “Kit” to email out to any person, business or organizations that would like to celebrate the day! You can request to be emailed this kit either on our website (https://www.startuplloyd.com/iwd) or emailing info@startuplloyd.com
The kit will include: - Information on International Women’s Day - Printable banner and poster - Instructions on how to host your own virtual “Fish bowl” discussion - Links to related webinars - Links to other local virtual events happening on the day - Hashtag suggestions so you can share on social media Even more than in previous years, we need to observe International Women’s Day (IWD) because COVID-19 has added new barriers for women around the world. Women are more at risk through this economic downturn because their jobs are ones more predominantly affected by shutdowns (hospitality, service, education, etc.). Not only are women more vulnerable because of their jobs but also because of gender inequalities within housework division, education and healthcare.
