Pizza with Pizzazz
Despite receiving our order for 11 pizzas, the RPC coped admirably and were ready for us when we arrived to collect half an hour later. We could have had them delivered free of charge (for orders over £10) within a 15 minute radius, but The Ed and I wanted to go and take a look. And we liked what we found; a cosy shop with a comfy sofa – they serve excellent coffee by the way – and a couple of tables for four for those who just can’t wait to get those pizzas home - and with the tantalising smells wafting from the authentic wood fired pizza oven you could understand how that can happen!
From small beginnings great things grow and that’s certainly the case with The Real Pizza Company. What started from a van parked in the village of Copthorne, they have now found a solid base on Copthorne Bank that has given them the space to grow into one of the best little pizza makers around. With Trip Advisor comments gushing praise that their pizzas were as good as anything you’d find in Italy, it only seemed right that the Family Grapevine team tested them en masse on a Saturday night takeout with the help of some serious teenage pizza connoisseurs.
Enjoy with friends and family at Borde Hill this Easter
We had ordered some Margheritas, Sgt Pepperoni, Spicy Chorizo, Carnivore (loads of meat), The Mighty Duck, Vegetarian with extra goats cheese and the Full House (need I explain), some at 9” (from £5.75) and some at 12” (from £7.50)... oh and a couple of portions of cheesy dough balls and garlic bread (£4.50 each) which were all consumed at record speed. Happy, satisfied kids, no washing up, job done! The secret to great artisan pizzas is the lightness of the dough and these didn’t disappoint with the finest quality tomatoes from Naples as a base and deliciously fresh toppings. If there’s somebody in the family who isn’t a pizza fan then there is another option; Crispy Chicken Breast Bites with Potato Wedges and all at the bargain price of £6.50.

Billingshurst Primary School pupils revive a dying art
Year four pupils at Billingshurst Primary School have been working with their very own sewing celebrity Lynda Lewis from BBC 2’s The Great British Sewing Bee 2014 to revive the art of quilting. With a history dating back to the 12th Century when crusaders introduced quilting to Europe, the craft was particularly popular in Victorian England when quilts were frequently given as commemorative gifts to be handed down from generation to generation. Once considered an important and large part of a family’s life due to the time and effort involved in creating a quilt, many consider it a dying art in our modern and hectic times. As part of the year group’s term project called ‘Under the Sea’, Lynda Lewis came up with the idea of combining painting and sewing to enable each pupil to design and create a unique sample that could be used to embellish the quilt. Each child was given a piece of fabric which they painted, using Brusho fabric paint, before sewing their designs on. Mrs Lewis over-locked the edges of the fabric and the children stitched their designs in place, adding beads, buttons and sequins to finish them off. The finished quilt contains 90 different pieces of work, of varying sizes, representing over 100 hours of work by staff and pupils making this work of art both unique and treasured by everyone involved. Quilting offered an ideal opportunity to effectively display the new skills the pupils have acquired. Mrs Lynda Lewis comments: “I’m always looking for an excuse to get children sewing, and everyone seemed so enthusiastic. When I was at school, sewing and knitting were part of the curriculum and I feel that children don’t always have enough access to these basic skills within this computer generation. Aside from the obvious benefits of improved fine motor skills, I believe that sewing and knitting are almost meditative and can have a positive impact on children’s emotional wellbeing.”

Childhood Anxiety A Guide to Coping I count myself very lucky; despite the usual trials, tribulations and challenges of a family, career, marriage and parenthood, I have never felt overwhelmed by life, never felt I couldn’t cope or experienced periods of panic. Sadly, however, I have known many grown adults who have suddenly been unable to cope with the magnitudes of life and, even more devastatingly and now more commonly, some children and teenagers. And the thing that worries me most is that there seems to be very little obvious and swift help and support available to them. The occurrence of psychological problems is growing in younger people and is it any wonder as life has become very big, very fast and very complicated. Our children are so much more aware of the big wide world than when we were growing up, partly down to the fact that they are bombarded with information via their smartphones, iPads, PCs, etc. They are also under a lot more pressure than we were; pressure to perform well at school with many more assessments, pressure to fit into more complicated families than traditionally; and pressure to have as much as others. People often assume that children get anxiety and panic attacks following one big traumatic event, but this may not necessarily be the case. It can often be a series of little messages that build up to produce a generally negative view of life. A young child may be suffering from anxiety without even knowing what it is, which makes it difficult for a parent to diagnose, particularly if the child won’t talk about it. In teenagers there may be an
Years
by Mary Lou Burge
unwillingness to discuss it for fear of being seen as weak. This age group are notorious for not communicating so their anxiety can be left unchecked which in turn can lead to strange behavioural traits and even a deep seated life long depression. Symptoms of anxiety and panic disorders often produce more ‘medical’ issues such as diarrhoea, headaches and heart palpitations, so your GP usually tends to be the first port of call. Some GPs are supportive although more often than not they put it down to a ‘phase’ or ‘hormones’ which will pass. If you are lucky you might be referred to a child psychologist but they are hard to come by and NHS waiting lists could be many months, whilst paying privately – at around £80 per session – is beyond the reach of most people. But there is light at the end of the tunnel as over time and with the right coping strategies young people can overcome their anxiety. It isn’t a quick fix and the child needs to do a lot of work for themselves to overcome the problems. Cognitive behavioural therapy is probably one of the most effective treatments of children and adolescents with anxiety and panic disorder. Children can be taught ways to identify and change the thought patterns that make them fearful. They can learn to identify the thoughts that trigger physical feelings of panic, and learn to change these thoughts so that they are more realistic. In essence, they can be taught ‘healthy thinking’. Children are also taught techniques for reducing their fear and use those skills to enter situations that they had previously feared or avoided.
There is an awful lot of information on the web, some helpful, some not so. Even some charities are only prepared to offer help once you’ve signed up as a member. One recommended website is www.getselfhelp. co.uk with some fantastic child user-friendly work sheets that cover a range of anxiety disorders. As children and teens suffering from anxiety are continually in a state of ‘fight’ with high adrenaline levels, relaxation plays a big part in the therapy of any anxiety disorder. HEADSPACE and GPS4SOUL are two Apps that can give meditation and relaxation programmes starting with just a few minutes every day - teenagers particularly are more likely to use something that they can access via their smartphone or iPad. The important thing to remember as a parent is not to lose a connection. Sometimes it’s all too easy to leave grumpy teens alone. It often feels that they are pushing you away in their search for independence, when actually they need your support even more at this stage in their life than ever before.
Empower, care and inform Reaching Families was established in 2008 by parent-carers to improve parent-carer’s access to information, training and emotional support and in doing so, enable them to better fulfil their roles as carers. They achieve this in a number of ways including (i) publishing an exhaustive guide to special

There are things that people can do to reduce the risk of a smoking-related fire; using a proper ashtray and taking the time to empty it regularly , avoiding smoking in bed or when excessively tired or taking medication. Having a working smoke alarm is quite simply a must; it may not stop a fire starting, but without one the chances of surviving a smoking related fire, or any fire in the home for that matter, are considerably reduced.
Heart disease, lung cancer, premature ageing, emphysema – most people are already very aware of the many health risks associated with smoking. What they may not realise is that smoking is also the leading cause of fatal house fires both here in West Sussex and nationally. That’s why as a fire service we are supporting the British Heart Foundation’s No Smoking Day on the 11th of March. It’s all too easy to be complacent and imagine that it could never happen to you. Sadly, we don’t need to look that far back to be reminded that it can and does happen with devastating consequences. In April 2013 a fire at a cottage in Copthorne in Crawley tragically claimed the lives of an 83-year old woman and her 52-year old son in one evening. Our fire investigations revealed that the fire was started from a dropped cigarette and unfortunately, there were no working smoke alarms in the property. Of course, we’d always urge people to seek support and try to kick the habit, but we are also realistic and understand that some

Perhaps you aren’t a smoker yourself but have a relative or friend who is and who you feel is at risk of a fire. There are steps you can take, or suggest, that will help to reduce the risk. For example, replacing waste paper bins with metal ones and investing in specialist fire retardant items like bedding, nightwear and blankets. We may also be able to offer a free Home Fire Safety visit, including fitting a smoke alarm if they need one, as well as suggesting small habit adjustments that could help keep them safer. We do have an eligibility criteria for these visits, we prioritise those who are over 65 or who have a disability, but individual cases will always be considered and can be discussed with our Community Fire Safety team. Just give them a call on 0845 872 9719. New danger: E-cigarettes
Whilst we wouldn’t discourage people from using these as aids to quit smoking, ‘Vaping’ as it’s become known does carry its own fire risks. The devices and their battery packs have been linked to 100 fires in less than two years, including a number in West Sussex. E-cigarettes contain lithium ion batteries which have caused fires through overcharging, physical damage or a defect within the battery during manufacture. Recently, there has also been an increase in the number of cheap unbranded e-cigarette chargers available to consumers; particularly through online retailers outside of the UK. Because these products are relatively new to the marketplace there are currently no specific regulations governing their safety. That makes it even more important if you’re considering using them to buy them from a reputable UK retailer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly when you are charging them. For local advice and support to help quit smoking visit http://www. smokefreewestsussex.co.uk/ For fire safety advice visit www.westsussex. gov.uk/fire or follow @WestSussexFire on Twitter or check out www.facebook.com/wsfrs By Gary Locker, Group Manager for Horsham & Crawley A regular column from the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service
There is an increasing trend, particularly among younger smokers, to turn to electronic cigarettes to get their nicotine fix. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered devices which simulate tobacco smoking by vaporising a liquid solution into an aerosol mist.

natural health matters The Benefits of Osteopathic Treatments for your Baby There are many interventions in the birth process that are factors in mother and baby experiencing abnormal stress and strain. Forceps, ventouse (suction), caesarean section, foetal distress, and shoulder dystocia or any other reason for the baby getting stuck causes excessive stress, maternal fatigue and distortion to the baby’s delicate bone structure. Many parents bring their newborn in to the clinic for an assessment to make sure the tissues have not retained any pressure from the birth and that baby is not suffering from the shock of the birth process. Cranial osteopathic treatments for babies at an early stage can release tension in the delicate bones of the cranium and face, having often borne the brunt of the compressive forces of birth. The treatment restores adequate motion through the shoulders and chest, helping baby to breathe and swallow more rhythmically which results in the reduction of gas and colic symptoms. It is also important to note that babies who struggle to feed often have compressed, tight palettes and narrow arches which are a pre-disposition to dental problems in later life. Releasing these restrictions as a baby will allow the palette to expand when they grow, leading to a better alignment of the teeth and bite. The most common reason for parents to seek our help is usually due to the baby struggling to feed efficiently. A baby’s ability to suckle involves many areas of the body that have to be free to move and co-ordinated efficiently to achieve correct latching, milk transfer and swallowing. We also see babies who have other specific problems, such as sleeping difficulties, colic, reflux, digestive pain/ excessive painful gas and flat head syndrome. These issues are physical; something has become restricted either during pregnancy, or more commonly during birth. Osteopathy can diagnose and gently treat the causative area(s). The birth process is one of the most stressful events of our lives. Considerable forces come to bear on the baby from the contracting uterus as it passes down the birth canal. Some distortion to the baby’s head can occur and can improve after birth, but in many cases some compressive strains in the head and body remain and are further aggravated by falls as a toddler.
Without treatment to correct these distortions, strain can remain deeply rooted in the growing child and normal health patterns may be compromised. Compressive strains can often be the cause of many health problems in the baby and child such as recurrent ear infections, chest infections and learning or behavioural problems. Treating mother and baby after birth can have exceptional results. The baby’s body has no fixed postural patterns making it easier to treat, as the osteopathic practitioner is not having to challenge the compensations in the body that are present as we build and grow. The mother is also in a fragile state after the process so some gentle techniques to ease tension in the pelvis and other areas can also be very beneficial. We highly recommend booking an appointment with an osteopath for your baby. The benefits of a cranial treatment are wide ranging and can be vital to the future development of your child. Adjusting any minor issues at a young age will give baby the best start in life and ensure that their future health is not affected by the trauma of their birth. The Story so Far Once upon a time, not so long ago, a group of parents were on a mission to save their local Crawley nursery from closure. At the same time, OSCAHS Ltd had been looking for suitable premises to expand their childcare business in the Crawley area and thankfully it looked like the hand of fate was about to throw a lifeline to both parties. Elaine Beach and Luke Mathewson, Directors of OSCAHS Ltd and with over 30 years
childcare experience between them, made a visit to the nursery, liked what they saw and realised that there was no time to lose as it was on the brink of closure and that staff were due to be made redundant within weeks.
costs of opening up the new nursery. Their tender was approved and Ofsted informed - although the wait for Ofsted to visit and register them was something that could take up to six months!
Elaine wrote a hasty tender to the landlords to start negotiations about taking over the premises. Equipment and staff were also needed so a visit to the bank was arranged and a business loan agreed to assist with
As their existing company logo consisted of handprints, Elaine and Luke felt that the obvious choice for the nursery name was ‘Little Handprints Day Nursery’. And so a brand new nursery was born! Elaine and her family spent every spare evening and weekend decorating the nursery rooms. Luke spent his evenings and weekends developing their website, email and accounts systems and producing promotional literature so that everything was ready and in place for opening day. They finally held their grand Open Day on 20th June 2014 with many parents and children visiting and enjoying the day.

Little Handprints wanted every room to have a theme so that the children had a visual learning experience in each. They thought long and hard about the naming of the rooms and so the baby sleep area became ‘Space’, the main baby room became ‘Sealife’ and a toddler room was named ‘Woodland’. They also asked parents and their children to suggest room names at the Open Day which resulted in ‘Jellyfish’ for a Baby Room and ‘Hedgehogs’ for a Toddler Room. Since opening they have been busy welcoming parents who used the nursery before Little Handprints, meeting new children and their families. As Little Handprints Day Nursery is a small nursery their ethos is very much ‘working in partnership’ with families and the local community to ensure the babies and children that come to the nursery enjoy a variety of learning opportunities in a nurturing environment. They are thrilled with their success so far, particularly their Chef being awarded a 5-Star food hygiene rating and a Gold Award in the Eat Out, Eat Well Campaign! Well done and may your success continue.

Being a Scout! Part of a town centre in Sussex was cordoned off while police officers search for two men believed to be armed with a gun. Officers said two men threatened the woman at her home at about 1130 BST, and she sought refuge in the Santander bank in South Road, Haywards Heath. Sussex Police said most of the town centre was reopened at about 1600 BST.

Take life back to nature: explore, discover, play, learn – live!’
Woods for Learning’s ethos is summed up by its motto of, ‘Take life back to nature: explore, discover, play, learn – live!’ The founder of Woods for Learning, Gary Marlow, has brought the Forest School concept, which originated in Scandinavia in the 1950s, to Horsham and the surrounding area. Research has shown that taking part in a Forest School brings many benefits to both children and adults alike. Spending time in the natural environment has been shown to improve emotional wellbeing by reducing levels of stress and fatigue. Being active outdoors and breathing in fresh air, surrounded by nature, boost the parts of the brain associated with good mood and happiness. Taking part in a Forest School is also a great way for families to spend quality time with one another away from the busy technological world we live in today. A Forest School is based around child-led learning. This helps children to develop their creativity and use their imagination through outdoor play, as well as improving their social skills. Children and their parents are able to learn new skills, from whittling wood to fire lighting, in a safe environment. Furthermore, studies have linked time spent playing outdoors to better levels of concentration and improved academic performance. There are so many great reasons to sign up for
24
a Woods for Learning Forest School session. There is the Mini Bugs club for 2-5 year olds on Thursday mornings, of which one parent said: “I took my 4.5 yr old to Mini Bugs club for the first time today! He loved it!!” “He loves being outside & usually in the mud & dirt so it was right up his street!” “He has learning difficulties & speech & language disorder so being in a practical environment was brilliant for him!” “Gary is just superb with the kids regardless if their abilities but in particular with my son. Gary’s patience and understanding was first class! The way he explained things & got my son involved with things like building a fire was excellent! Something that I thought my son may find hard actually gave him confidence in his abilities! It was great that Gary also used Makaton that supported my son understanding instructions.” “The whole experience was lots if fun! From the bug hotel to collecting things to make a picture & not forgetting the hot chocolate!! We cannot wait to go back next week! I really recommend trying out MiniBugs! Trust me it’s not just for kids.” There is the regular family events each month, “Really well organised. Great range of activities for everyone which kept children’s interest. Will definitely come to future events”said The Murphy family”.
Holiday clubs for children of school age are run and are equally highly praised: “Great activities and nice mix of skills, fun and nature. We’ll definitely come again. Thanks again”. Woods for Learning birthday parties are also proving very popular. Activities vary from session to session and include: learning about nature, den building, woodland crafts, animal tracking, team work challenges, fire-lighting, learning how to use tools for cutting wood, mud kitchens, cloud-spotting and much more. Most events take place in Leechpool Woods in Horsham, but it is also possible to book a session at your own venue, subject to an appropriate risk assessment being carried out, so why don’t you “Take life back to nature”. The Show was titled ‘Retrograde’ and celebrated the College’s achievements in dance over the last 10 years. It combined dances from the past 10 years of shows, as well as displaying new choreography from 2014. Senior dancers opened the showcase with a colourful piece inspired by Khaled Hosseini’s ‘The Kite Runner’, originally choreographed in 2010 by the College’s Head of Dance, Nicola Dominy. Another highlight was the hair-raising performance of ‘Bad Romance’ (2011) which maximised the Bury Theatre’s technical potential with strobes and dramatic silhouettes behind a cyclorama screen. Tributes to earlier performances included Graeme Spencer’s ‘Sister Act’ (2009), which was reworked for a much larger group by junior dance teachers Lizzie Beeby and Milly Gifford and ended the first half of the show on a high note. A particularly interesting re-interpretation was Street Dance Instructor Luke Bohanna’s vision of Spencer’s ‘The Somnambulist’, a quirky contemporary number which explores sleepwalking and dreaming.

New pieces included ‘The Garden of Eden’, a mysterious duet performed by Jasmine Thomas and Peter Firth, demonstrating the choreography talent of Upper Sixth student Polly Reeves-Perrin. Sixth Form dancers, James Hebbard, Will McGoldrick and Matt Pearson-Miles performed ‘I Won’t Dance’, with great flair and agility. The piece was choreographed by Upper Sixth Former Caitlin McPhilemy and Miss Dominy. Luke Bohanna’s street dance ‘Superman’ (2012) was performed by a group of Prep School boys and was a crowd pleaser. Boys’ dance at Hurst has come on in leaps and bounds and they now rival the girls’ talent. ‘Retrograde’ clearly demonstrated the Hurst Dance Department’s accomplishments by creating such a successful show from its archives.

Sixty Years of Inspiring Dance Roshe Performing Arts return to the Hawth this Easter with a dance extravaganza, ARTISTYRY, which will have everyone talking! Roshe, who celebrated 60 years in the business last year, have an unrivalled reputation for producing professional, original and diverse dance and musical theatre productions. With over 20 very different numbers in ARTISTRY, there will be something to suit all tastes and ages. Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Greek and Irish dance items all feature in this production alongside some great Musical Theatre numbers. Roshe were recently awarded the IDS Dancing School of the Year and have won countless accolades and national awards for their choreography and standard of dance. After 60 years, Roshe has a great understanding of the dance world and many of its pupils go on to study at the top colleges in the country. They have many past pupils dancing all over the world, in the West End and on TV. With its own internal agency, Roshe pupils can also be seen in many live theatre shows, including Matilda the Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the West End. Roshe teach children and students who dance for a hobby and those that wish to make it a career. Whatever their ambition they are taught within a disciplined and fun environment and Roshe instil in every pupil a sense of pride, discipline and achievement. Taking regular exams are all a part of the training as this not only gives a child something to work towards it also gives them a sense of accomplishment and success. ‘The Roshe School has enriched the Sussex dance world for 60 years’ Dame Beryl Grey, DBE. ‘The youngsters of Roshe Performing Arts School are amazing’ The Stage Newspaper ARTISTRY is on at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley from 1st to 4th April 2015 at 7.30pm and a Matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 4th April. Box Office: 01293 553636 or www.hawth.co.uk With a proven record of success come and see why Roshe has been leading the field for 60 years!
