A long, hot summer packed full of fun!
It may not be hot, but it’s certainly long - summer is upon us again and we’re keen to make sure you’ve got the very best local information to make it the perfect one for all the family. The good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune on childcare or entertainment as both Crawley & Horsham Councils have an extensive programme of free events and affordable activities throughout the school holidays – and this issue tells you all you need to know. Both towns have recently welcomed a ‘taste of the East’ with the opening of a great little Japanese restaurant chain - read our restaurant review to find out more. Your views are extremely important to us and recent feedback has shown us how much you value our ‘What’s on Guide’, so you’ll be pleased to know that this summer’s is one of the biggest ever! So enjoy the long days and fill them with fun!

England’s Blind Cricket Team trains at EGCC
With the cricket season in full flow and a magical Fifth Day at Lords watching England v New Zealand, Ben and Nabil were up at East Grinstead Cricket Club practicing in the nets getting ready for the weekend matches. As they were leaving, the boys were treated to a surprise net session by the England Blind Cricket Team who were preparing to play India at the Oval tomorrow (28 May). Both the boys were enthralled by their ability and skill which included a ball bearing cricket ball. They were invited to help with the training! A brilliant net session! And huge good luck to the England tomorrow! It is well worth keeping an eye on the 5th day for England test matches over the summer - kids are usually free! Details for the

Summer Fun & Musical Sundays in August
During every Sunday in August, the awardwinning Borde Hill Garden will host a series of family and music activities, enabling the whole family to make the most of the summer weather. Borde Hill offers an array of fun activities for children including the adventure playground, and the parkland where ball games and kite flying are on offer. August will see additional activities added for the summer holidays - checkout the website for full details. Borde Hill Garden is delighted to once again host the popular ‘Musical Sundays’ which will take place every Sunday in August between 1-3pm. A variety of musicians will play the cello, viola or harp, performing everything from classical to jazz music, while on other weekends a whole band will perform. The sessions will take place on the South Lawn with the Elizabethan mansion house as a backdrop. The Little Ritz Vintage Tea Café will be serving refreshments and guests are also invited to bring picnic and enjoy the music with their family and friends. August is a great time to explore the Garden with its herbaceous borders and gold standard roses in full bloom. The Paradise Walk has been replanted with late summer colour to delight visitors with kniphofias, salvias, geraniums and asters. The tranquil Italian Garden is also a highlight in August, with it’s terracotta pots filled with agapanthus and pelargoniums. Don’t miss our

Billingshurst Primary School pupils raise money in the sunshine
Under beautiful sunny skies, the children and staff of Billingshurst Primary School held their annual Spring Fair on St George’s Day, 24th April 2015. Festooned with red and white bunting, the playground became a marketplace of stalls and games run by the pupils to raise money for the school. Winners of the poster competition were also announced, following a fourth year of sponsorship by Fowlers Estate Agents, Billingshurst High Street. Pupils were invited to design a poster to promote the Fair reflecting the St George’s Day theme, and more children than ever took part. With competition running high the judges found it hard to reach a decision; however the three winners were Zoe Lewis from Reception, Marli Wright Thompson from Key Stage 1 and Isabella Holland from Key Stage 2. The overall winner was Marli. The winning designs are proudly displayed in Fowlers Estate Agents’ window and throughout the village. Each year the Spring Fair continues to break records for the amount of money raised and this year was no exception raising over £1,700 for the school.
Summer nearly new sales
The popular Baby, Toddler & Nearly New Sales will continue to be held through the summer with confirmed dates of 2 August and 6 September at North Heath Hall, St Mark’s Lane, Horsham, 2:30pm to 4pm, Adults £1, kids go free! With stalls ranging from the St George’s Cafe to the ‘Knock the Knight Down’ game, there was some healthy competition between Year Groups to see who could bring in the most amount of money. This year the Hunt the Dragon Egg proved particularly popular. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School comments: “Thanks to the ingenuity of our pupils and some fantastic weather, we enjoyed a very successful Spring Fair. It is extremely rewarding to watch the children take such pride in coming up with ideas and actively getting involved in this event, ensuring our visitors had a lovely afternoon.”

Your essential guide to local supervised activities by Mary Lou Burge
For the 3rd year running we’ve put together an essential guide to what options are open to parents looking for short or long-term childcare in the Crawley & Horsham area during the summer school holidays. This year we have put particular emphasis on what our local town and county councils are providing which gives some really cost-effective options to local families with a surprisingly extensive range of activities.
Day Camps

Ultimate Activity Camps are now holiday residents at Handcross Park School and provide some ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED registered 5-day survival courses for 4-14 year olds. The Woodland Challenge runs 27-31 July and 10-14 August; making fires, shelter building, pioneer workshops, tracking, archery and wilderness first aid are just some of the exciting activities young adventurers will use as they work as a team to overcome woodland challenges on this course. Whether travelling on foot, by boat or by the roar of a quad
bike, children will learn to become ultimate woodland survivors! The Jungle Encounter runs 3-7 August and 17-21 August and takes children through a series of recreated jungle survival activities, from jungle first aid, water collection and cooking, canopy shelter building and fire making, to predator evasion and tracking. The cost for any week is £189 (£169 if you book by 16 June) and there’s an optional Thursday night camp out for £35 which includes dinner on the Thursday night, a hearty breakfast and packed lunch on Friday, plus drinks and snacks along the way! Call 0844 870 7077 or go to www.ultimateactivity.co.uk Woods for Learning provides a great opportunity for children to have fun by looking for animal tracks, shelter building, marking tree faces, tower building, mud art, welly walks, fire lighting, whittling, bow and arrow making plus much more! Throughout the Forest School experience children develop their skills of teamwork, cooperation, listening and observation. A typical start to the day involves going over safety rules, setting camp, laying a fire (if needed) and putting up a shelter. We have a listening and looking task every session. Children sit quietly with closed eyes and listen to the sounds of nature or look at what’s moving around them. Some children find sitting still very challenging and developing this skill can have a positive impact back in the classroom. Being outdoors offers opportunities for doing things in different ways and on a different scale. Children create art work from twigs, leaves, stones and mud and use leaves, bark and berries to make dyes. The natural world offers so many opportunities for learning. For more information about the summer holiday clubs, go to www.woodsforlearning.com The Family Grapevine cannot mention all the activities and clubs that will be running this summer. It is only able to write about what has been confirmed and notified to it. Please note also, that the magazine is not responsible for any clubs or activities attended. If you would like any informaton for next year’s Summer Guide, please let me know and I will contact you nearer the time.

Record Breakers will bring together the worlds of fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of their Summer Reading Challenge 2015. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal
Magic, Human Touch and Action! Adventure!

The scheme is free and flexible for all families – you just need to read six books by Saturday 12 September 2015. Children will receive rewards for each book they tell us about and those that read all six will receive a medal and certificate. Libraries are also asking for volunteers to help run the Challenge in a library near them. Volunteers will be offered full training and can gain new skills including communication, team work and experience of working with families. This is a particularly great opportunity for young people seeking new skills to help with school, college, training or employment.

Counterfeits can kill… Gary Locker, Fire Officer for Horsham and Crawley, explains why we should be wary of cheap fakes when shopping for electrical products. Let’s be honest, we all like a bit of a bargain. However, when it comes to buying electrical products, if the price looks too good to be true then the likelihood is, it is! Unfortunately, over the last few years there has been an increase in the number of counterfeit electrical goods coming on to the market and there’s been a corresponding increase in fires involving electrical items. Crews in West Sussex have attended a number of fires involving electrical hair styling products, mobile phone chargers and e-cigarettes chargers. Buying online is now many people’s preferred way to shop. However, this does make it easier for fake or substandard goods to slip through the net. Items purchased directly from non-EU manufacturers may well have bypassed the normal safety checks. Of course, the problem isn’t just online – how many of us have seen a cheap mobile phone charger or e-cigarette kit being sold on a market stall? Some people may think it’s worth the risk to save a few pounds but these goods often
14 Issue 45 Summer.indd 14
contain incorrect or faulty parts that overheat or malfunction increasing the risk of a fire, shock or even electrocution. It’s hard to forget the tragic fire in Sheffield last year which claimed the lives of three generations from one family, including a nine-week-old baby. Fire investigations concluded that the most likely cause was a substandard mobile phone charger. So, the next time you are tempted by an electrical ‘bargain’ please think about the risk that you may be taking. For the sake of saving a few pounds at the time of purchase, you, or your loved ones, could end up paying the ultimate price. Gary’s safety tips:
• Buy products new from a reputable high street or online retailer that you know and trust • Check the product for the relevant safety certification marks • Avoid products without a brand label or where the manufacturer’s contact information isn’t clearly displayed on the packaging • Check the packaging. Does it have the correct logo, high quality printing and correctly spelled text? • If you have suspicions about a product’s safety or think it’s a fake, don’t use it. • Contact Trading Standards on 03454
040506 or use the online reporting form at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport • Make sure your home is protected with a working smoke alarm – it’s the best way to get a vital early warning if you do have a fire For fire safety advice visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/ fire or follow @WestSussexFire on Twitter or check out www.facebook.com/ wsfrs

local information matters Osteopathy During Pregnancy During pregnancy a women’s body changes rapidly and the increasing load can have a dramatic effect on posture, especially on any pre-existing conditions. Mum-to-be may notice new aches and pains or notice a worsening of things that have been easy to manage before pregnancy. It is also inadvisable to take painkillers whilst pregnant, leaving the expectant mother with very little to combat these ongoing daily problems. Some of the key areas for our osteopaths are pregnancy care and treating the associated issues arising from the changes in the mother’s body, including lower back, hip, pelvic, and sciatic pain. Practitioners can also address other common problems experienced in pregnancy such as headaches, pelvic instability, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, leg cramps, fluid retention and sinus congestion. Osteopathy works with the soft tissues of the body to facilitate healing and restore balance by releasing stress and tension, re-aligning the joints and bones and improving functionality. During pregnancy, significant attention is given to assisting the body to accommodate changes occurring under the increasing load of carrying a baby. Osteopathy can support the entire transition, treating conditions as they arise and helping the mother’s body to accommodate the many rapid changes happening at this time. Another fantastic result from osteopathic care during pregnancy is that it can contribute to positive birth outcomes by ensuring optimal fetal positioning. Treatments can help the baby position itself well by reducing obstructions caused by problems with the mother’s physical structure. Osteopathy can also ensure that a mother’s body is in the best possible alignment and pain free, so that labour is not complicated by any extra pain from the body being out of alignment or overly tense. Osteopathy is also important within the first six weeks after the birth of the baby. As pregnancy hormones are still in abundance, the new mother has the opportunity to have the body aligned more effectively than ever before. This can help alleviate tension and stress that t ds odd bu may be affecting a mother’s sleep, a precious up? Officers said two men threatened the woman at her home at about 1130 BST, and she sought refuge in the Santander bank in South Road, Haywards Heath. Sussex Police said most of the town centre was reopened at about 1600 BST.
The second man was said to be white, about 32 years old, more than 6ft tall and with a shaved head. He was wearing a light grey fleece jacket, blue jeans and shiny brown leather shoes. Officers believe it was a “targeted incident” and do not believe the public was at risk. ‘Continue their business’ Det Insp Russ Sheppard said: “I would like to emphasise that we do not believe there is a risk to the public from these two men. “We are doing everything we can to track down these men and there is no reason why people can’t continue on their business in Haywards Heath during this time.”

Organised by Sussex Junior Chess as an Inter-Schools competition, it has been in existence since 1903. Copthorne played the semi-finals against Bishop Bell School, Eastbourne, and the final against Downlands School from Hassocks to secure the trophy. Amardip (England, Sussex and team captain), Zevon (England & Sussex), Kieron (Sussex) and Teja played some tough matches but came out victorious.
Champions, (with Amardip the reigning IAPS Under 11 & Under 13 Champion) so this is the icing on the cake for our chess development here at Copthorne. We are very proud of all of our chess players.” Sussex Junior Chess organises this interschools competition for four age groups every year. This competition is open to all schools in Sussex. More information can be found on the Sussex Junior Chess website www. sussexjuniorchess.org
Mr Jones, Headmaster at Copthorne Prep School said “We have never won this competition before despite being current Sussex Under 11 and IAPS Prep School

Horsham & Crawley’s Taste of Japan! For some time now as a family we’ve bemoaned the lack of decent Japanese food locally. As great lovers of sushi and particularly katsu chicken curry my kids have even asked for outings to Victoria Station to get their fix of Japanese flavours. Well, no longer. Kokoro Sushi & Bento opened its doors at Easter serving hot and cold Japanese dishes, sushi & sashimi and bento boxes in West Street, Horsham. Kokoro literally means ‘heart’, ‘soul’ and ‘spirit’ and that’s exactly what they pride themselves into putting into their food. The sushi is prepared hourly using quality ingredients on the premises and not only does it look appetizingly fresh, you can really taste the difference from the pre-packaged version from the local supermarket! This is a small outlet with seating at a premium, although you can always take away, but on the Crawley Eagles 07902 331000 Felbride & Sunnyside Cricket Club www. felbridgeandsunnyside.com Horsham Cricket & Sports Club 01403 254628 Horsham Trinity Cricket Club 01403 242410 Ifield Cricket Club 07766 691164 Roffey Cricket Club 01403 260775 Rudgwick Cricket Club www. rudgwickcricketclub.co.uk Slinfold Cricket Club www. romanycricketclub.com Southwater Cricket Club 01403 252521 Sussex County Cricket Club 0844 264 0202 Sussex Cricket Disability Hub www. sussexcricket.co.uk/disability-hub-flyer 01273 827104 Sussex Martlets sussexmartlets.omcore.net Three Bridges Cricket Club 01293 534539 Warnham Cricket Club www.warnham. play-cricket.com

day my mini-taster and I turned up we managed to grab a bar stool seat each. The sushi was on colourful display laid out in the chiller cabinet with prices ranging from £1.95 for a simple hand roll to £9.95 for a deluxe sushi & seafood box. There was also a delicious range of salad boxes including Salmon & Avocado for £4.95.
bite. So at long last Horsham and Crawley can both enjoy authentic, delicious, healthy Japanese food that’s affordable for all the family. So that only leaves me to say “O tanoshimi kudasai!” That is “Enjoy!” to you and me.
We tried the miso soup (£1.25), tempura prawn maki (£4.95), and chicken dumplings (£2.75) which were warmed up for us. We followed this with the medium portions (small portions also available) of spicy pork and rice (£6.25) and chicken katsu curry and rice (£5.95). All fresh, delicious and great value for just over £20. The mini-taster connoisseur was suitably impressed!
