Make time for your family
September is an exceptionally busy month for families, a time of change. Some little people are donning uniforms and heading off to school for the very first time, others are changing schools, making new friends and getting to know new teachers. It can all be a bit emotional for everyone involved. All the more reason to make family time special! It won’t be long before it’s Half Term and you can spend some quality family time experiencing some of the fantastic local activities over Halloween – just take a look at our What’s On Guide for all you need to know! Following recent local publicity, in this edition we highlight the issue of road safety around our primary schools. Several local villages have set up successful action groups and we talk to one about their initiatives and how they are trying to improve their kids safety on the trip to and from school as the days get shorter over the coming weeks. I would like to take a moment to reflect on the terrible events in Shoreham - my thoughts are with all the families and friends who have suffered such terrible losses. We’ve also checked out the hottest new café in Crawley that everybody’s talking about – and perhaps it’s not what you’d expect! With our usual family focused local news and those all essential listings, the Family Grapevine has all you need to see you through the Autumn. Wishing you all the best of luck with the new term!

The News Crawley Centre gets a makeover
Major improvement plans for the centre of Crawley have been approved. Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council are investing £3m revitalising Queens Square, with work starting early next year and expected to be completed by Autumn 2016. The scheme will redefine the Square as the heart of the town, creating a high quality, inviting, distinctive and enjoyable public space encouraging more people to visit.
Hollywood Bowl’s Facelift
Hollywood Bowl in Crawley Leisure Park has undergone a magnificent £500,000 refurbishment, and has been given a complete revamp worthy of its glittering namesake. Completed on 31st July, the Centre remained open for the duration of the project, celebrated with an exclusive VIP night event last night hosted by Marilyn Monroe, where guests were treated to champagne and cocktails, and sampled items from Hollywood Bowl’s menu. The redesigned Centre is a ‘new generation’ Hollywood Bowl, including 26 fully computerised lanes with plush leather seating, a fabulous new restaurant and bar, and a dazzling new décor celebrating all things Americana. In addition, an advanced scoring system means that players can share their scores on social media, and post their strikes on Facebook. Linked screens let everyone at the venue know when someone gets a strike too. A new booking system also allows visitors to invite Facebook friends to share a game with them when they book online, and can automatically ‘check in’ the party upon arrival.
and serves a variety of drinks and traditional and house speciality cocktails – perfect for relaxing after a particularly competitive game, or for a few drinks with friends. Tony Stone, General Manager of Hollywood Bowl, Crawley said: “We can’t wait for our customers to see the newlook centre. With high-tech features and lots of added Hollywood glamour, Crawley is a whole new entertainment haven.” Tony continued: “We’re taking bookings, so anyone who wants to book a lane or an area can visit www. hollywoodbowl.co.uk/crawley or call 0844 826 1457.”

Any of the Centre’s 22 additional lanes can be prebooked, and with booths in the restaurant or bar area, Hollywood Bowl is perfect for celebrations of all occasions - from nights out, work functions and informal team get togethers to teenage gatherings and children’s parties, where team members are always on hand to help set up ramps and in-lane bumpers that give the little ones a great chance of beating the adults. There is also a new look ‘Hollywood Diner’ - an in-house restaurant serving freshly-made American classics, including burgers handmade to a special recipe – and food and refreshment can be delivered directly to guests’ lanes while they play, so the fun doesn’t have to stop for refuelling. Spooky trails and ghostly tales with the National Trust in West Sussex
Tulleys Halloween haunts biggest yet
There’s something for everyone at Tulleys this Halloween which they claim will be their biggest and best yet. As owner Stuart Beare explains, “When the event began in the 90s it was aimed at families with older children. Over the years we have gradually expanded to appeal to younger children and adults.” The Pumpkin Patch will feature a number of activities for little ones with Hilda Hotchpotch and Wilfred Wagglewand telling spooky tales, fearsome fancy dress as well as live puppet shows, Bumpy Barrel Ride, and the Petrifying Play Area. The Spooktober Fest is aimed at 6-13 year olds and features three new haunts; The Darkness, Twisted Fun House and Terror Trail which will keep even the bravest of youngsters entertained. The more extreme Shocktober Fest this year has 4 new attractions; The Volt, The Chop Shop, The Field of Screams and The Nightshade Circus, as well as the return of the classic favourites for older teenagers and adults who want to be truly terrified!

The Benefits of Prenatal Massage Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to heal the body, reduce stress and promote overall wellness. In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension -- which aids better sleep -- and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes. Massage for pregnant women offers a number of benefits, and it’s always a good idea to discuss symptoms with a therapist to ensure you get help where it’s needed. Key treatable symptoms might include: • Headaches can be relieved by focusing massage on the head, neck and shoulders. In addition, massage reduces the chances of migraines or tension headaches by relaxing trigger points and muscle spasms. • Muscle tension created by carrying the extra weight of a baby can be relieved by encouraging blood flow to the afflicted areas. This provides more nutrient-rich oxygen and also increases the flow of lymphatic fluid, which sweeps away toxins and metabolic waste.

For invigorate d skin, mix organic ex tra virgin coconut oil w ith porridge oats and sea salt for an exfoliating treat. The perfect remedy to brighten an d soften skin on the fa ce, but be careful around the eye area.
To give hair a nourishing treatment, rub a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil into dry hair and leave for at least 30 minutes (overnight is good too!). Wash out with shampoo – no need for conditioner as the coconut oil will have left your hair feeling soft and shiny.
• Fatigue, backaches, leg cramps and swelling/oedema can all be relieved through various massage techniques. • Massage stimulates the release of serotonin, your body’s natural anti-pain chemical! This activity will help relieve all the usual aches and pains of pregnancy throughout the entire body. • Massage can also help lower blood pressure by reducing stress and anxiety Regular massage therapy not only helps diminish anxiety and discomfort but boosts relaxation as well. This ultimately can lead to improved sleep patterns, which are a major problem for pregnant ladies. Massage can really promote a deep and restful sleep! In addition, the serotonin, endorphins and dopamine released by the body in response to massage provide an extra helping of those natural wellbeing, good-feeling chemicals. No pregnancy is the same so laying positions will vary. Usually, massage is performed whilst the pregnant lady is on her side, surrounded by pillows to give maximum comfort and support. Massage can also be done in the sitting position, especially if the main focus is the head, neck and shoulders. We highly recommend mums-to-be to book a course of pregnancy massage treatments, which are suitable only for ladies past the 20 week mark. We find that the many physical and mental benefits that can be gained from regular treatments can make a positive difference to our pregnant clients.

Making our roads safer for our kids
by Mary Lou Burge
After 13 years of being a parent at our local village school, it’s time for my youngest son to move on. There will be many things that I shall miss, but the school run will certainly not be one! Over the years, having eventually found somewhere to park, I have battled with a double buggy, a pram and a toddler and 3 excitable little boys rushing out of school to catch up with their friends. And all of this on probably one of the busiest and most dangerous crossroads in the local area. In the past decade there seems to have been an explosion in the amount of road use, but also, more worryingly, a severe decline in respect for pedestrians around schools. The situation in the village of Turners Hill has got so bad in recent months that a new parent to the primary school, so incensed at the inconsiderate driving through the village, started the Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group. With the backing of the school, local parents and village residents the Group has managed to achieve a huge amount in a short period of time. Here, David Pawsey has kindly written about the Group, what they and other local villages have achieved and some helpful advice for those wanting to try and improve road safety around their schools and keep their children safe as we go into the winter months. Whilst there will undoubtedly be some relief at sending children back to school after the long summer break, the new term can also bring concern to parents. Regardless of age, children are continually put at risk by dangerous and inconsiderate driving, whether from speeding on the roads where they live or inappropriate parking around their school. This is an issue that has received considerable local and media coverage in recent months. In my village a variety of vehicles have been filmed regularly speeding, at all times of the day and driving the wrong way around a roundabout that is perilously close to one of the entrances to the village’s primary school. This has resulted in the formation of Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group which has tried to raise awareness of the issue of speeding in the village to both the police, the County Council as well as drivers themselves. Not far down the road in Copthorne, parents and school staff have become increasingly concerned with the number of cars that park on both the zig-zags outside the school and nearby yellow lines. As a result a group of parents have formed Copthorne Junior Road Safety Group. Fortunately neither school has experienced a serious accident but there are worrying near misses reported on a regular basis with children and accompanying adults being put at serious risk. And the arrival of the autumn term brings new dangers. According to the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) the combination of rural villages and the shortening days is a potentially deadly one. During the working week of the autumn and winter months, casualty rates peak between 8am-10am and 3pm-7pm, with the afternoon peak being higher - the key times when children are travelling to and from school. Road casualty rates increase with the arrival of darker evenings and worsening weather conditions. Every autumn when the clocks go back and sunset occurs earlier in the day, road casualties rise, with effects worse for the most vulnerable road users such as children and cyclists.
Rospa figures also show that more deaths occur on rural roads than on urban ones. In 2010, there were 1,046 fatal accidents on rural roads compared to over 572 on urban roads. Surveys have shown that drivers, especially younger and inexperienced ones, on rural roads drive with less care than they do on urban roads, because they think it is safer to break the speed limit on rural roads and they believe these roads are safer because they are quieter. Rural roads, which dominate West Sussex villages are narrow and often have no pavement or crossing facilities. The lack of lighting may also be an important contributory factor in increasing the likelihood of a severe child injury in rural areas; 12% of child casualties occur in areas of darkness on rural roads compared to just 1% on urban roads. Both Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group and Copthorne Junior Road Safety Group have been putting pressure on the County Council and other authorities over their respective issues. This has involved peaceful protest, numerous emails and letters being sent to the authorities, using social media to highlight the cause, setting up an e-petition and forming links with local media. Copthorne Junior Road Safety Group have even made a video on the dangers of illegal parking outside a school, which at the time of writing has had in excess of 40,000 views. Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group has achieved national coverage with the issues being reported in the Daily Mail, Mirror and Telegraph. However the most important factor is the collection of data. It’s an unfortunate cliché that serious injuries or death are the factors that are most likely to result in action being taken by the authorities. Any incident that does not involve the attendance of the emergency services is not necessarily recorded. As a result both Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group and Copthorne Junior Road Safety Group have attempted to keep a record of any near misses and incidents of dangerous driving and parking to provide as evidence to the authorities, such as the County Council, to take action. As well as keeping their own records such incidents can be reported to the police through Operation Crackdown (www.operationcrackdown. org) who will contact the perpetrators if they feel it is necessary. In the case of Copthorne Junior School, the group have met with West Sussex County Council and are applying for a Traffic Regulation Order. If successful it will result in the road outside the school being closed at drop off and collection times, except for access to the staff car park, emergency vehicles and the occasional coach for school trips. In the case of Turners Hill Dangerous Driving Action Group have been successful in achieving a more regular police presence in the village and getting the County Council to replace a damaged 30mph sign that has been missing for a year. The group has also been trying to persuade parents to wear Hi-Viz vests, which have been sponsored by local company Cox Skips, when taking their children and picking them up from school. It may be a cliché but it is true: Be safe, be seen!

Are you ready for School? This time last year saw a flurry of articles about children starting school without the basic skills they needed to be able to learn in the classroom. What shocked me most was that children were less able to speak audibly and be understood than they were a decade ago; and listening and attention skills had really declined. At that time I was just setting up Talking Tots West Sussex and the news articles confirmed to me that our classes are really important. It felt great to be doing something to make a difference to children’s lives and future learning. Since then, 100 local children from 12 months to 5 years have had fun honing their listening and attention ability at Talking Tots. This includes my twin boys who are off to reception class this year and, although they will be among the youngest in the intake, I’m confident they’re ready (although I can’t say the same about me). Why are listening skills important? Being able to listen and pay attention is fundamental to learning. Small children have notoriously short attention spans so taking action to help develop these skills in early life enables effective, age-appropriate development. Of course, every parent knows that just because a child knows how to listen, it doesn’t mean they will. Especially when they are being asked to get ready for bed!

How can parents help? Although our children will continue to ignore us when they are doing something they consider to be more interesting than going to bed, there are things we can do to help improve their listening skills: Play listening games. You could get two shakers and give one to your child. Whisper ‘I’m going to shake my shaker quietly’ and demonstrate. Then say loudly ‘I’m going to shake it loudly’ and demonstrate again. Switch from one to the other a number of times. Encourage your child to copy. For older children, shake the shaker slowly and ask them to count the shakes with you and then copy what you did. You can extend this game by shaking different patterns of numbers (e.g. two shakes, pause, two more shakes).
I’m looking forward to hearing about this year’s cohort in the news and hope that things are improving for our children. My good news is that with my boys going off to school, I can now offer more classes during the week so please look out for our new classes in Crawley, Horsham and Billingshurst. The full class schedule is on our website. Written by Jeanette Harwood, owner Talking Tots West Sussex. For more information on our classes, please contact jeanette@talkingtots.info www.talkingtots.info
Read stories to your child and talk about the pictures. Ask questions afterwards to see how much he’s understood. Don’t wait to long for an answer – if your child isn’t sure, just go back to the pictures and talk about them again. Model good listening. When your child talks, try to give them all your attention. Put down your phone; establish eye contact and listen. Ask questions about what he’s said and give him time to answer. Summarise what he said to show understanding. Turn off the TV when you’re not watching a programme. It’s distracting and linked to attention difficulties.

A broad and balanced education
Arunside Primary School is a happy and supportive community school close to the centre of Horsham, and was originally opened in 1967 to 178 pupils. The school takes its name from the River Arun, which meanders along two sides of the boundary of the extensive school grounds. The wonderful facilities and fantastic surroundings on offer at Arunside enable the school to provide a wealth of learning opportunities for its pupils. The school’s recent “Good” OFSTED report in December 2013 states: “Arunside is a good school with all groups of pupils making good progress from their starting points. Teaching is good with imaginative activities capturing all pupils interest that develop their literacy and numeracy skills well. Pupils benefit greatly from the excellent teamwork between teachers and assistants with the Headteacher providing clear and resolute leadership. Governors provide effective support and challenge.”
The aim of Arunside is to give every child a broad and balanced education, both academically and socially, whilst helping each child develop as a successful learner, confident individual and
responsible citizen. Children at the school are seen as individuals, and the school believes that a positive relationship between children, parents, carers and teaching staff is essential.
If you would like to find out more about Arunside, please visit the website http://www. arunside.w-sussex.sch.uk or phone the school office on 01403 263919 to arrange a visit.
Arunside has always been commended on its friendly and caring atmosphere, fantastic learning environment and for providing an enriching and truly creative curriculum which encourages the children to thrive both personally and academically. Lessons are interesting and diverse, covering a range of topics from fire and ice to ancient civilisations and from Kenya to the planets. School trips support these exciting themes and include a residential trip in year 4. In 2013, the school was expanded from one form entry to two form entry, in order to support the increasing number of houses being built in the area. The building work was completed in 2014, and alongside the extra classrooms, the finished school includes a spacious library, ICT suite, food technology room, music room and larger sports hall with new equipment. The expansion has enabled the school to provide places for children across all of Horsham and from a variety of backgrounds.

There is a big world to explore! Our Junior School is the ‘right’ choice
There are so many benefits to learning another language and with new reports springing up all the time, it’s a hard fact to ignore. From students scoring better results in all subjects - not just languages, earning more once they start working and even keeping certain illnesses at bay, right through to the practicalities of choosing to work in other countries or the simple pleasures of getting more from your holiday; knowledge of another language is a wonderful skill to have.
It’s said that children of just a few months old, are able to differentiate between languages and stimulating this ability helps them to develop their cognitive functions - in visual sensitivity as well as the more expected A disncve school for movated girls. auditory. “Les Puces” pre-school French classes are the brainchild of Mandie Davis, Call now for further details ‐ 01444 241050 herself the mother of trilingual and bi-lingual daughters. They love to sing and dance, make things and listen to stories - and if this is being done in a second language then that’s just an additional benefit!” It is important to Mandie that the parent or carer is involved in the learning process. “I find it fascinating that young children can experience the fact that grown ups have to learn too - and sometimes might even need a helping hand from the younger generation!” Reading the stories and listening to the music at home enforces that special bond. Les Puces classes provide a first step to understanding another language. “Our courses give the children an early insight into the fact that there’s a big world waiting for them to explore!” To find out more, or to sign up for a Les Puces class visit www.lespuces. co.uk

Welcoming children from the age of two, the classes provide the perfect environment for early learning. Children enjoy happy, secure, caring surroundings where class sizes are small to ensure that social, academic and creative skills are built and nurtured. Excellent relationships are established between parents and teachers, who work together to make certain all children fulfil their academic and social potential.

A different taste for Crawley There’s a new joint in Crawley that everybody’s talking about. In fact it has impressed so many people with its deliciously fresh flavours that it’s now rated the No.1 eaterie in town on Trip Advisor, as well as having a 5 star hygiene rating. But despite its name, Fat Boys Joint is not another Americanstyle diner. The owners actually have a love for Afghan food that they want to share with the uninitiated and decided to come up with something rather different. And different it is! The café’s décor is an odd contrast to the authenticity of the food. As we sat in our leather-clad booth, it struck me that it looked more like a trendy US burger joint with its industrial look of stripped wood, exposed copper pipes and brickwork, and upturned metal pails as lampshades. In fact the only touch of the East were a few little North African lanterns hanging up by the serving bar. The extremely helpful and attentive serving staff suggested we try the Traditional Pukhtun Lunch which consisted of a main dish with sauces, salad, naan and a drink at the incredible value price of £5.99. My hungry holiday boy companions tried the tandoori oven cooked Chicken and Lamb Tikke which was cooked to perfection and in nice large pieces. I had the Chapli Beef Kebab which was rather like a flat spicy meatloaf, and absolutely melt in the mouth delicious. The naan breads were possibly the most enormous we’d ever seen and beautifully warm and fluffy.
for 2 people or £75 for 4 – and that includes drinks and ice cream! It’s crammed full of their specialities, one of which is Kabuli Pulao, the Afghan national dish, of steamed rice with lamb, raisins and carrots. And you also get their extra whopper sized naan! Some dishes sound familiar from Indian cuisine, but Afghan food is more subtly spiced and lightly fragranced and some of Fat Boys recipes have been passed down from generation to generation and are full of gastronomic surprises! Do bear in mind that this is an alcohol-free zone, but there are plenty of authentic drinks like Iced Afghan Tea and Mango Lassi to compliment the food, and their Mango Juice is imported straight from Pakistan. We did have to wait quite a while for our food, but it was explained when we ordered that everything was freshly cooked from order, and it was certainly worth the wait. The other thing to remember is that they only take cash – although there’s a rather convenient cash point next door if you forget! I thought as a nation we’d crossed all culinary frontiers, but Fat Boys has proved we have more to discover and we can be extremely grateful that they have brought it right to our door! I just can’t wait to go back!
But probably the best way of truly experiencing what Fat Boys has to offer is to try their extensive tasting menu at £35

Calling all private landlords! Have you protected your tenants from fire? New smoke alarm laws are coming into force! Landlords are being urged to act now to ensure they are ready for new safety laws that will protect their tenants and save dozens of lives a year. The new regulations will make it compulsory for all landlords to fit smoke alarms in rented homes and are expected to come into effect from 1st October 2015, subject to Parliamentary approval.
times more likely to die in a fire in the home if there is no working smoke alarm and over the next 10 years it is estimated that the new laws will result in 231 fewer deaths and 5,860 less injuries. To help landlords comply with the new regulations West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has a limited number of free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to give out to relevant landlords whose properties currently do not have alarms. Nicki Peddle, Safer Communities Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are keen to work with local landlords to improve the safety of tenants across West Sussex. Landlords need to be clear that from October they have a legal responsibility to ensure that their properties are fitted with appropriate fire and carbon monoxide detectors.
Under the new laws smoke alarms must be fitted on every floor of the property as well as carbon monoxide alarms in properties which burn solid fuels. Landlords must check the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy with potential penalties of up to £5,000 if they do not comply. Fire and rescue services across the country have been campaigning for many years for the legislation to be introduced. While overall smoke alarm ownership in the country stands at around 90%, those living in private rented homes are far less likely to have a working smoke alarm. Statistically people are four

contact your landlord so they can take action to comply with the new regulations. “Of course once the alarms are fitted it is important for tenants to test them regularly, ideally once a week, by pushing the test button on the alarm. If you are a landlord in West Sussex wishing to apply for a free smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm you can do so via an online application or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire for more information.
