The News School Dinners Update Copthorne jump ahead In our last issue, we ran an article about the latest of the rest developments in the Government’s initiative to The Copthorne Prep School show jumping team are NSEA National Champions again! For the second year running the team of Georgia & Harriet Keenleyside plus Roselly Hamlett won a National Title at the NSEA Championships held in Addington Manor during half term. Crawley Play Service, Crawley Borough Council’s Play Service have four fabulous adventure playgrounds dotted around the town; Cherry Lane in Langley, Water Lee in Furnace Green, Millpond in Bewbush and Creasy’s Drive in Broadfield. Spring Clean at Indoor Table Top Sales rode fantastically well for one last time. This year the honour was the 85cm JWS Arena Eventing Title, a discipline judged on speed, jumping and horsemanship, demonstrating great partnership with your pony. Congratulations to Harriet who also finished in 6th place in the individual competition. Not to be outdone, the Copthorne Under 11 girls hockey team won the inaugural East Grinstead Hockey competition last week, beating 12 other local Independent schools to the title. Coached by Minnie Jones (Headmaster’s wife) and Lucy Jones (Headmaster’s daughter, who plays hockey for East Grinstead) this team have not lost in any sport for 3 years. With the under 11 boys soccer team winning a local tournament at Brambletye School and Ben Kinnear and Matthew Eades being selected for the Independent Schools Football Association squad, sport at Copthorne is thriving.Headmaster Chris Jones, himself a former PE/Games teacher said “it is wonderful to record this sporting success and it is thoroughly well deserved as children, coaches and parents have worked hard to make it happen, but many of these children are also academic scholars, musicians, budding actors or actresses and all-round good citizens. We try to enthuse them all to “be the very best they can be at everything”.

Pitchy Breath
Writers have been invited to submit their scripts to be turned into theatre productions. Pitchy Breath Theatre Company will present Shorts III, four original one-act plays written by the public, at The Hawth on April 1-3 2014. The double decker events bus will become the Christmas Bus in Crawley town centre on the Thursdays leading up to Christmas, particularly for after school and late night shopping activities: 28 Nov, 5, 12 and 19 December running some simple creative activities for families - from making Christmas cards and drawing calendars, to creating tree decorations with scratch art,
pipecleaners and bells. There is an additional afternoon attraction on each date, where this bus is joined by The Purple Teapot Puppet Company who will be performing short puppet shows ‘In Search of Rudolph, on the lower deck starting from 4pm, 4.45pm and 5.30pm on each day. A very special gift ... and in total we raised over £700!
I was told about an amazing story of kindness and wanted to share it with you. I asked Jasmine’s mum if a story could be written to share with you. Thank you Jasmine for writing and sharing your story with us. My name is Jasmine Murray and I am 10 years old. I celebrated my birthday in October but instead of asking for presents, I wanted to do something to help the elephants, my favourite animal, as they are under real threat from poaching. I worry that if something isn’t done, they will be extinct by the time I am 30 years old. I got upset to think that I was too small to do anything and that, with so many horrible things happening in the world, nobody would think of helping the elephants. My mummy told me that I could do something and took me to meet the team at Care for the Wild International, a charity based in Horsham. They were lovely, and all bring their dogs to work! They understood how I felt so I was determined to make a difference. I set up a Just Giving webpage www.justgiving. com/jazzmurray. It was easy to do and you wouldn’t believe it, but the feeling I got from seeing all the messages of support with donations from family and friends was far greater than if I’d had received any presents. At my party, we had an auction, a raffle, a quiz all about elephants and a lucky dip with prizes from Care for the Wild International, so all my friends went away with lovely presents

The App Fit Generation By Mary Lou Burge
If you are reading this pre-Christmas then this might prove some food for thought, but if you are reading this post-Christmas then you are probably feeling the effects of a couple of weeks of over-eating, slouching on the sofa and general lack of bodily movement. The sad thing is that if you haven’t been out and about running off those excess January pounds then there is a good chance your kids haven’t either.

My very own teenager now spends half his life languishing in his bed, and the other half trying to become King of the Mountains table with his cycling score on STRAVA. A similar App is MOVES which records your entire day’s movements whether that’s steps, cycling or running and gives awards for most activity.
It’s a sad tale when 16 months on from the London Olympics – the greatest display of sporting aptitude this country has seen – the Government has just been forced to set up a ‘Commission on Physical Activity’ following a study that 70% of Britain’s children do not get the recommended hour a day’s exercise. Is it any wonder UK children’s obesity levels are the highest in Western Europe?
In response to what they see as a ticking time bomb of future health problems, The NHS launched their Change4Life programme www.nhs.uk/Change4Life/ which now has more than a million people signed up. It’s got some great Apps for kids to use, like the ‘Mobile Fun Generator’ that can be used on the web or downloaded onto a personal device with over 100 fun activities for both indoor and outdoor play. Pre-school children can download the Lazy Town Activity Pack featuring Sportacus with whom they need keep to break Robbie Rotten’s evil spell by being busy and become Games4Life heroes. And for you and the teenagers there’s the ‘Couch to 5K App’, a nine week running plan with lots of help and tips.
Being a parent myself, I for one don’t like being dictated to about what I should and shouldn’t do with my children and people do resent feeling controlled by a ‘Nanny State’. But the facts are there in black and white. This generation is just not moving as much as it should! There are now, of course, many more concerns for our children’s safety, and being a responsible parent you may not want your young children running wild alone in local fields, or cycling on our ever busier roads. But perhaps we’ve become a little too relieved at the fact that our kids now entertain themselves indoors, without a murmur, attached to their tablet, iPod/pad, kindle, mobile, Wii or PS3.
But however much technology is going to rule our family lives, it’s important that we don’t stop doing things together and, you can’t beat good old fresh air and a nice Sunday walk in the park. The National Trust are particularly keen to get kids outside more and have many technology-led ways of getting people out into the countryside. Their hugely successful Great British Walk has 690 downloadable walks around the country from their website www. nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/activities/walking/walking-festival/
I wonder how many kids received some sort of personal electronic device this Christmas – a huge amount going by latest sales figures. Call me oldfashioned, but I was quite astounded to hear that UK children have the highest mobile phone usage in the world, with 73% of 10 year olds having their own mobile, compared to 31% in the US and only 10% in France.
Some research into one of their most popular walks, around the beautiful city of Bath, took 2 and a half hours to complete, but burned the same number of calories as a 90 minute game of football, tennis or badminton!
And yet, this technologically led world will continue to be the one in which our offspring live. Technology is not going to go away, even if we do try and limit its home usage. So rather than battle against it, the phrase ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ springs to mind, and some children’s fitness experts are riding the technology wave and getting kids busy and active by using their personal devices.
So what are we waiting for? Get the kids downloading and let’s all get moving!

St John’s Sunshine Big Toddle! The Big Toddle continues to be the UK’s biggest fundraising event for under 5’s! Over 300,000 children registered for the Barnardo’s Big Toddle in 2012 and lots of money was raised around the country over the summer. The staff of Sunshine Preschool wanted to get involved too and so they planned their very own fun toddle for this worthwhile charity. The preschool is committed to involving itself in the community as well as offering a very good start for young children between the ages of two and a half and four. The children and staff dressed up as their favourite book and TV characters; we followed a trail as they toddled around Copthorne Green. All the little princesses, super heroes and pirates had to follow picture clues all the way to the finish line where they were awarded a medal followed by a tea party and lots of toys to play with!!! The Mums and Dads enjoyed their tea and cake too after walking in the rain which the children did not seem to notice!!! All in all the toddle was enjoyed by all the children and their parents and they were very proud of the money they raised for the charity!! It was lovely to follow the toddlers having fun with their friends as well as chat to other parents and feel part of a village community!! Learning the Ropes Circuswurx Juniors weekly workshops offer would-be jugglers, unicyclists and poi performers the chance to develop amazing new skills in alternative activities. The relaxed and friendly group gives participants the freedom to choose which skills they work on and how much they do. All equipment and tuition is provided so all you need to bring is your enthusiasm! Young people who have attended Circuswurx summer schools have enjoyed learning circus craft so much that as well as continuing to improve their own skills they now lead the classes for children too. Pete, Rosie and Haydn were keen to help other young people develop their own skills. At first they volunteered at the annual Summer School and will now run the weekly class for young people. There is nothing ‘clown-like’ about these circus skills. Haydn is a skilled unicyclist and rides it everywhere! Rosie is Queen of poi! Pete is an expert juggler! Together they wanted to inspire children to develop these skills with them. The kids experience creative exploration, dextrous and balancing skills and physical exercise whilst making new friends.
Carolyn Murphy, Arts Development Manager oversees the group to ensure that as young leaders, the team are equipt to develop the classes with a view that they will run these with Carolyn taking a facilitating role. “Circus skills are great fun but they also have many other benefits. As soon as you learn a new skill you want to show it off and then you often find yourself teaching others. It’s great for personal development and working with others”. Circuswurx Juniors is suitable for those aged eight to 15 and will run from 6pm to 7.30pm on Mondays after the February half term break at Waterlea Adventure Playground in Furnace Green at £3 per session. In addition to this, the long established Circuswurx class is open for those aged over 15 and takes place on Thursdays at Broadfield Community Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at £3.50 per session. Learning to Swim The Sussex Swim School teaches children to swim in their beautiful, warm, private, luxury indoor pool in Lower Beeding near Horsham/Crawley They have recently re-branded themselves from The Little Swim School to The Sussex Swim School as they wanted to reflect that children of all ages are taught to swim and not just little ones. Established 10 years ago, they now have almost 400 pupils learning to swim with us each week.
Each Easter and summer, very popular intensive crash course are run where the children have a half hour lesson every day over the course of a week. Crash courses really help pupils build confidence, strength and stamina whilst also correcting stroke faults.
The Sussex Swim School specialise in teaching children to swim from 6 months up to competition level. They offer a natural progression from programmes like Little Dippers and welcome children who have had little or no experience of water.
All their swimming teachers are all fully qualified ASA, hold the RLSS Teachers Life Saving Test, are British Red Cross first aid trained, DBS checked and are fully insured. They are all mothers of young children too and have years of experience. We are proud to be an ASA Member Swim School.
A fun filled half hour lessons run Monday to Friday 09.00 to 1pm for children aged 6 months to 4 years, then 3.45 to 6.45 for school aged children and Saturday 08.30 to 2pm. With a maximum of 6 pupils in a class spaces are of a premium, but they believe in providing their pupils with the individual attention they require. Once upon a time, in a quaint market town, a family opened up a little café selling pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, ice-creams and all things nice and they called it Sugar & Snow, based on the dream of a little girl called Ariella. 8 months later it was busier than bees around a honeypot. And so it was that one day 3 greedy little boys and their not so greedy Mummy went to test the best of its wares.
fluffy American pancakes drizzled with maple syrup (although you could have waffles instead) with ample supplies of scrambled egg and bacon. Son No.2 had the 3 Stack Chocolate Chip Pancakes (£5.25) drizzled with chocolate sauce, and Son No.3 just wanted good old fashioned Sugar & Lemon (£3.50). These arrived very quickly and could only really be described as the yummiest of the yummy.
And there it was, in the midst of Piries Place – they knew they’d found it when they spotted a large white giraffe in the window. Upon entering, their taste buds started swelling at the colourful array of mouth-watering homemade ice-creams displayed in the cabinet. Forget the vanillas, strawberries and chocolates of this world (although they were there), they delighted in the sight of Gingerbread, Turkish Delight, Tutti Frutti Firework, Candy Cotton, Parma Violet and house special Sugar and Snow!
After all that their tummies were fit to bursting, and yet there were still Sundaes (how about Sticky Toffee Pudding? £6.95), Shakes (anybody fancy Peanut Butter & Chocolate? £3.75), and Soda Floats aplenty to be tried! As it was Halloween-eve the Strawberry Cream Soda Float (£3.45) looked gory and arrived frothing in a jam-jar with handles
and even the Ice-creams were themed with ‘Blood Orange Sorbet’, and ‘Mulled Wine and Berry Sorbet’ ready for the Christmas tide. Just like Goldilocks who had a problem with chairs, Sugar & Snow haven’t really got enough of them and so you might just have to wait a while for a table (no bookings at weekends), but this will make your little ones very happy as it’s a truly sugary dream (and probably a dentist’s nightmare)! At this point they could have walked away with little pots of deliciousness, but it was so much more fun to take a seat in one of the multi-coloured leather booths with sparkling LED changing lights above their heads and peruse the extensive menu of Yankee style pancakes, waffles and crepes. The only difficulty was deciding whether to go sweet or savoury and which topping to top it all off with. Only after the smiley lady had come to take the order did they gaze back at the shiny bar loaded with vases full of treats and toppings! Mother decided on one of the special crepes, the Cran-Brie (£6.45), a traditional French style pancake with brie and bacon and a little pot of cranberry jam. Son No.1 went for the American 3 Stack Pancake Breakfast (£6.95) with big proper
