ALPHARETTA

Food & Drink - Alpharetta is produced by

One thing I know for sure is we are passionate about our food in Alpharetta and Milton. Fresh, local ingredients are standard. The smiles on the faces of service professionals in our award-winning restaurants (and renowned local chefs) make eating out an unforgettable experience.

Local Life Publishing 10719 Alpharetta Hwy #1153 Roswell, GA 30076 locallifepublishing.com info@locallifepublishing.com alpharettarestaurantguide.com facebook.com/alpharettarestaurants

Every one of our fine-dining restaurants’ dress codes are labeled ‘casual.’ In the South, we assume every one knows what we mean by ‘casual.’ Rather than tell guests what they should wear it’s understood that ‘casual’ doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing in Alpharetta as it does in Key West, FL.

President CHRIS SMITH

That said, we truly are a casual city - in dress and in temperament. The majority of us have no problem saying, “ya’ll” - even in professional settings. We don’t look down or away when we walk down the street. We enjoy our modern living and shiny, new things; but we’re grateful it’s all served up with big portions of hospitality and deliberate regard for history. And, we appreciate we don’t have to drive too far in any direction before running into another great restaurant, or another familiar face. That’s all for now. We will update the guide in late summer. A little bird told us there are a dozen or so new restaurants opening this year and we will be right there to let you know more when they do. Go out to eat. And by all means, #eatlocal Warm Regards,

Regina { I’m finishing up some work and having a cup of coffee at Mugs on Milton in Crabapple. }

How to Get the Most Out of This Guide

THIS PRINTED RESTAURANT GUIDE, Food & Drink - Alpharetta, offers a comprehensive alphabetical directory of almost all of the restaurants in town. Research indicates most people still want their information in printed form; so we’ve got that covered. But at the same time, all of this information can be found in more detail,

www.alpharettarestaurantguide.com . Explore the directory to discover establishments you’d like to try and/or learn more about the ones you already frequent regularly. In the back we provide a condensed list of restaurants broken down “by type of cuisine” and “by location.” A few words about our “by location” section: We have taken creative liberty deciding where the “dining districts” are in Alpharetta - they do parallel closely to our established shopping districts; however, we felt there were a few differences. We came up with nine distinct areas we’ve blocked off in order to clearly let you know in which part of town each restaurant is located. Keep in mind, please: 1. If the first word of a restaurant’s name is “The” we alphabetize by the first letter of the

alpharettarestaurantguide.com

second word. So, if you’re looking for The El Felix or The Union, don’t look in the “T” section. 2. Initially we planned to include some of the “fast casual” restaurants but ultimately chose not to include those with counter-service or drive-throughs. We admit we did include some - like Chick-fil-a (of course), Corner Deli (of course), the new POKE-trend restaurants, non-franchised locally-owned spots, and a few that may have slipped through our rigorous research team’s fingers. But for the most part, we should know our town has almost every brand name and national fast casual chain one might need, even if they’re not listed in this guide. 3. We love breakfast and desserts; so we listed these - counter-service notwithstanding. 4. The digital version of the guide can be found pinned to the top of our Facebook page @alpharettarestaurants. 5. We’re social folks - so if you LIKE us, please do so on Facebook. We set the posting functionality public, so have at it. In case you skipped over #4, the FB page can be found at @alpharettarestaurants. 6. FYI - WE WILL and probably did make a few mistakes. Don’t be too harsh on us if you find one. We’re human, just like you. So, be nice. But please DO let us know. info@locallifepublishing.com. #eatlocal

Alpharetta

C

Foodie

WHILE CHATTING IT UP with local foodies, we learned Alpharettans have strong opinions and preferences for which types of food we like, as well as in which areas of town we become regulars. One thing we all agreed on is we prefer to #eatlocal. We believe the type and number of restaurants in a town say a lot about the personalities of the people who live and work there. So, then what do the numbers say about us? In Alpharetta and Milton, the numbers don’t lie, showing we especially love fine dining, contemporary American/Southern cuisine, sports bars (go Dawgs!), Mexican food, pizza and desserts, as evidenced by the 15+ establishments of each of these categories of dining. Our palates are next enthusiastic about Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, cafes/delis, steakhouses and breakfast food, with 10+ restaurants of each of these types of cuisine around Alpharetta. A good number of us also gravitate towards barbecue, seafood and Mediterranean foods with 5+ locations of each these yummy options. But, we have to face an uncomfortable truth. We need a little help in other categories in order to be considered for a “Melting Pot of the South” award. We’re close. But we need more French, Korean, Irish, Latin, Vietnamese and Middle Eastern options. If you’re contemplating opening a new restaurant anytime soon, then give us one of these, please? Which areas of town give us the largest selection of cuisines and ranges of prices and styles of restaurants? Windward tops this list with over 60 restaurants packing into that one strip of geography North of downtown. The North Point district to the Southeast of downtown boasts 50+ options; and the Old Milton Parkway area beckons us East with 30+ choices. Many national and regional chains mark their spots in these districts, persuading suburban families -- and those of us I like to label, “hungry and in a hurry” -to zip in and zip out. I admit I fall into this “hungry and in a hurry” category, regularly. (continued p10)

Of course the Avalon area, with its 25+ top restaurants will continue to draw us in droves to the refined and upscale destination, chef-driven menus, attention to detail and professional servers. Here we will always find lots of luxury locals, out-of-towners, event-seeking families and diners with discriminating tastes who have driven North from their ITP bubble to “experience Avalon.” The Crabapple/Milton area - with 15+ restaurants - offers its own dynamic temperament - non-pretentious upscale, local residents with a lot of community affection can always enjoy delicious meals with fresh, attractive presentations. Both Avalon and the Crabapple/Milton areas are ideal for date nights, gatherings of friends, lunches and special occasions. One of my favorite things about dining out “well” in Alpharetta is that every single “fine-dining” labeled restaurant insists its dress code is “casual.” Where else can you get such chef-driven, prettily presented dishes without having to suit up? The Haynes Bridge Rd area lines 15+ restaurants along a 2 mile strip connecting downtown to North Point featuring many fine dining, upscale

local spots and national chains, mixed in with efficient business lunch options. If we head here for our next blind date, business lunch or celebratory dinner, we’ll fit right in. Plan to settle in this part of town for ample parking in the evenings and less traffic congestion. Drive South on Alpharetta Hwy or North on Highway 9 to find a scattered mix of durable restaurants with plenty of parking and familiar restaurant brands we can count on for consistent taste and service. We are fully aware it will show our journalistic bias when we write our favorite place to meet for lunches or dinners (or happy hours!) is downtown. By the end of 2018, downtown will offer us over 40 options as many new restaurants open around City Hall. Locals and young professionals are drawn downtown - for a number of reasons: community affection, loyalty, a little history and a little modernity all packed into a few walkable blocks where it seems everybody knows somebody over at the next table. So what do you think? Do you agree with these characterizations? #eatlocal

The 150-year-old farmhouse and 1930’s cottage were preserved and restored with classic elements and charming details. Beyond the cuisine, guests rave about the energetic bar, multiple fireplaces, intertwining outdoor deck and patio, and onsite garden, Milton’s Acre. The restaurant features contemporary new Southern cuisine which utilizes fresh, local ingredients to create regionally inspired comfort food with bold flavors artistically presented by professional attentive servers in the welcoming atmosphere. In addition to its seed-to-fork new Southern fare, Milton’s features prime steaks, including filet mignon, grass-fed Delmonico rib eye, dry-aged bone in NY Strip and their signature American Kobe flank steak. Many of the ingredients originate from Milton’s Acre, which features fresh heirloom vegetables and herbs used nightly in the kitchen. This one-acre outdoor space is perfect for weddings, wine tastings, social and corporate events. From late spring to early fall, Milton’s offers a “Garden Dinner Series,” which has sell-out limited seating. It’s a must-try dining experience that features a four-course, family-style menu with wine pairings in the center of the garden. Executive Chef Derek Dollar has gained a reputation as an inventive and uncompromising chef who demands the very best. He insightfully chooses which produce is to be planted in Milton’s Acre and incorporates the garden’s bounty each night in his dishes. Dollar has been applauded for his cuisine by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Local Palate, Zagat and more. Over the years, Milton’s has been honored to received OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice Awards in the Best Overall, Best Food and Best Service categories. Zagat recently deemed Milton’s one of the “most unique culinary experiences” in Atlanta.

IN THE RESTAURANT business aesthetics are important, but not to be overvalued. You’ve probably noticed the trend of overpriced, boutique-y restaurants with all the style and none of the sub-

stance. Those shiny “new toy” establishments lose our interest (and patronage) very quickly. It is understood that most restaurant startups do not last beyond the five-year mark, but if they do, they will endure. Impressively, one restaurant in Historic Downtown Alpharetta beat these odds by

a landslide-- having more than a thirteen-year legacy under its belt. Smokejack BBQ opened its doors in December 2004 on Main Street, in a charming old building that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Behind the restaurant’s black-and-white façade, you’ll discover a warm and welcoming atmosphere of rustic red brick and wood-paneled ceilings, the signature aroma of house-smoked beef, pork and ribs (oh my!), not to mention their signature sauces and sides made fresh and from scratch every single day. Some of the most popular and unique menu items include fried pickles, “triple bypass fries,” the “cue-bano” sandwich, and an entire category called, “From The Smoker,” so imagine all the possibilities. It should be no question that any restaurant measuring their menu items in pounds is a worthy investment. Smokejack is a self-described “family-friendly Southern grill with a major emphasis on barbecue,” but this concept didn’t manifest out of thin air. It is the brainchild of Dave Filipowicz, the restaurant’s dedicated and longtime owner. Before he opened the restaurant, Dave recruited his friend Jay Swift (of Atlanta’s South City Kitchen) to join him on a cross-country road-trip to scope out the national barbecue landscape. He kept a journal of ideas, observations and potential influences, from which he developed the ultimate concept of Smokejack itself-- a culmination of Dave’s experiences at BBQ hotspots across the nation, as interpreted by his creative imagination. Upon return he recruited Chef Johnny Umberger, who has remained Chef to this day, ensuring exemplary consistency in flavor over the last 13 years. The fully stocked bar is impressive, with friendly

Brisket Plate with House Made Collard Greens and Mashed Sweet Potatoes and familiar faces offering 30+ bourbons, 7+ scotches, 10 vodkas, 20+ varieties of whisky, 30+ bottled and draft beers plus several specialty house cocktails. A few favorites include their Peach Palmer; Jack’s Blueberry Moonshine Lemonade; and the 24 oz. “Large Marge” a-rita. The draft and bourbon flights, as well as the variety of draft - and local craft - beers makes Smokejack one of our favorite Happy Hour destinations downtown. In addition to a full-service dining room and full bar, Smokejack offers professional catering services both on and off-site. Upstairs is “Jack’s Attic,” a private dining room and reservable event space appropriate for parties, banquets,

brunches, meetings and rehearsal dinners. The space can accommodate anywhere from 25 to 95 guests. Upstairs catering is buffet-style with a customizable menu featuring a variety of meat and sides, optional desserts, and bar options. Offsite catering is available for up to 2,000 guests; but unlike other cater-claiming restaurants, quality will never be sacrificed for quantity. Dave works hard to innovate traditional recipes and improve business operations. Under his ownership, Smokejack always has and will keep striving to be quicker, more original, and better-run. Take, for example, the journey of their famous fried pickles. Dave is never impressed by the ordinary, and for a while it seemed that the competition had simply given up and settled for soggy pickles. So he set out to correct this injustice, employing a vendor to churn out batches of a larger “super-cut” pickle. Dave then worked with his culinary team to concoct a crispier (and soggy-free) fry batter recipe that today remains a house secret. This unique and fine-tuned appetizer is a town favorite, and the envy of all transient competition. While most restaurants lack the drive to innovate or even improve (in the outwardly-noble name of tradition), Smokejack does both, maintaining a strong legacy while continuously working to be better.

After making it past the interviews, Dave was selected as a finalist for Small Businessman of the Year 2017 by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. The honor was ultimately awarded to Michael Lundmark of Jekyll Brewery, a close friend of the restaurant. Smokejack BBQ is no stranger to praise. Smokejack received the Certificate of Excellence on TripAdvisor.com, and is ranked no. 1 out of a whopping 250+ Alpharetta restaurants, so you can take the city’s word for it: Smokejack is more than a must-try, it has become a landmark and a repeat venue for hungry Alpharettans (who know where to find the good BBQ). Known for its full-service dining room, exclusive house-made menu items, fully-stocked bar, familiar faces, impeccable service, private (upstairs) dining, special event space and offsite catering, Smokejack leaves a lot of legacy but little left to be desired. THE SUN IS SHINING

T

Let’s Eat Out (side) Today

THERE ARE FEW THINGS we love more than patio season. Fortunately, Alpharetta is filled with plenty of delicious restaurants that offer great outdoor dining spaces. The phrase “al fresco” is borrowed from Italian meaning “in the cool [air].” When a restaurant offers an al fresco dining option that means it has a patio or other designated outdoor area with tables and chairs usually serviced by waitstaff or bartenders. In the winter, many

restaurants have heaters and outdoor fireplaces or fire pits to keep guests comfortable on cool evenings. Be careful using the phrase “al fresco” in Italy, however. Today, Italians use the expression to refer to spending time in jail. Instead, when intending to mean “dining outside” they use the phrases “fuori” or “all’aperto.” To the right are some of our favorite spots for al fresco, fuori and all’aperto dining down the street :

Bourbon Heritage Month

With a long, deeply rooted history, bourbon is making a cultural comeback, and it doesn’t look to be taking the bottom shelf anytime soon. The bourbon industry has managed to prove it’s staying power, which is an astounding fete for a product that prides itself on maturity, taking years to bottle a high quality spirit. More and more restaurants are investing in this brown spirit’s comeback.

Bayou and Bourbon turns creating bourbon cocktails into a spectacle. Bar manager Joe Rampino adds flare by “using a smoking gun to infuse bourbon with cherry and oak woods and adding a twist to classic cocktails, like the Smoked Rose Manhattan, which is served with a hand-picked rose.” Branch and Barrel Craft Bar & Kitchen at Avalon set up a very popular-with-the-locals “Bour-

bon 101 Club,” for anyone who is interested in the fine art and taste of good bourbon. Free to join, B&B keeps track of incremental benchmarks which reward members with special tastings, invitations to exclusive dinners and rare barrels. When a real treat comes in their doors, “Bourbon 101 Club” members are the first to know. We don’t think about it when we sit down to sip our bourbon, but the process this dark liquid went through before it reached our lips is quite lengthy and technical. A few regulations have to be met before a whiskey will be considered a bourbon. According to the Federal Standards of Identity for Bourbon, the mash (mixture of grains) must contain at least 51% corn and the spirit must be distilled at 160 proof or less, and then barreled at 125 proof or less, with no additives. Even though over 90% of Bourbon is born and raised in Kentucky, there is no regulation stating it has to be, but it does have to be produced in the United States. The barrels - which might arguably be the most important element in the process - must be distilled in new charred oak barrels. The key word is “new” - brand new, and used for bourbon only once. Discarded barrels are then used for other spirits, such as tequila, or even shipped to Scotland for Scotch. Bourbon rookies, Flanagan suggests, “Can start “mid-tier, typically a $9-10 pour.” He believes this starting point ensures “a quality product that will introduce the robust flavors but allow the palate to adjust and appreciate the complex varieties.” Flanagan also welcomes bourbon drinkers both new and seasoned to try a flight of bourbon at Smokejack, which he indicates is the best way to understand the differences between bottles and price points. Smokejack’s flights showcase 3 different bourbons. Create your own or choose an already curated flight such as the Single Gents highlighting single barrel bourbon or the Three B’s, which showcases distilleries starting with the letter “B” (Bakers, Bookers, Basil Hayden). “Straight Bourbon” has been aged for at least 2 years. “Single Barrel” means it is not a blend from multiple barrels. “Bottled in Bond” dates back to regulations established in the 1800’s, which means a higher quality product, aged for a minimum of four years. Bourbon is one of a class of dark liquors called “whiskey.” Other familiar types of whiskey common in US restaurants include Irish, Rye and Scotch. In all parts of the world except in the US and Ireland, “whiskey” is spelled without the “e” as “whisky.” That’s not a typo. Though origin, ingredients and the

production process may be the same, there are – contrary to vodka – huge differences in the taste between the distilleries. Especially the maturation in casks which accounts for the aroma of each. Home to the “International Irish Pub of the Year,” the very best place for a good Irish Whiskey is Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub in Crabapple/Milton. “The Irish

Pub of the Year award {never before awarded to an American pub} is given to the inspirational pub which has reached benchmark standards that others should aspire to,” said John Byrne, CEO of Irish Pubs Global Federation. Unless you’ve got a trip to Ireland planned, the closest you’ll get to an authentic total Irish Whiskey drinking experience is right down the street. #drinklocal

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE between all the dark liquors; and how do we distinguish between the four main types: Bourbon, Irish, Rye and Scotch? WHAT IS WHISKEY Whiskey (with an “e” in the US and Ireland) is made from fermented grain mash (barley, corn, rye or wheat) and aged in charred white oak casks giving its distinctive brown color. Whiskey is a broad category of liquor and can have lots of differences in color, taste and smell. The four main types of whiskey (y) are Bourbon, Irish, Rye and Scotch.

Bourbon Bourbon, whose name comes from an area known as “Old Bourbon” in Kentucky, is a whiskey that’s distilled from corn. For a whiskey to be considered bourbon, the grain mash must be at least 51 percent corn.

Irish Irish Whiskey ranks as one of the best whiskies in the world. The primary ingredient of Irish whiskey is barley. It gives off a lighter and less sweet flavor than the full-bodied American whiskey.

Rye Rye is a grass in the wheat tribe, closely related to barley. {American} Rye Whiskey, full in body and spice, must be distilled from at least 51% rye and aged two years or more.

Scotch

Image by PHOTO-SMITH @ Smokejack BBQ

Technically, Scotch is whisky (spelled without the “e”) that must be produced in Scotland, made from mostly malted barley and aged in oak barrels for three years or more. The number following the name on a bottle of Scotch tells you how long it was aged. Some Scotch tastes a lot like bourbon, but with a signature smokiness that lingers at the tail-end of a tasting.
