BIG NEWS! Roswell Magazine is published 12X per year

Publisher’s Post

W

e are so happy to see you! This is our first issue back in print since March 13, 2020, when COVID19 took over the Earth. We produced four eMagazines during that time, and we learned how much you guys love consuming your local content online! Who knew? What a crazy year it has been! I love the humor coming out of a lot of y’all - it’s in times like this I really appreciate a good laugh, right? New normal? In April, we took a look at our preCOVID19 business plan and decided to throw the whole thing out the window. In unprecedented times like these, it makes more sense to rewrite the whole thing from scratch than to create some sort of hybrid model, with one foot in the past. We have changed a lot about how we publish this little magazine and took a hard look at how Roswell Magazine will best support our mission in this ‘new normal.’

Roswell Magazine’s mission is to facilitate building a community where every resident thinks local first.

We doubled down. We engaged more readers, followers and fans in the last three months than we have in the last three years, which means more impressions for our advertising clients! And, that’s what makes us happy - connecting local readers with like-minded local businesses who understand the importance of contributing to community life. Help us expand our digital distribution by distributing our QR cards wherever you go, especially waiting areas - doctors and professional offices. Readers can QR zap it and read the digital issue while they wait for the doctor. Let us know and we can send you a stack of cards! Here are a few extra special actions we have taken to support local businesses this year: • Released our clients from their contracts 4/30/20 • Single copy sales ($5 per copy - this is passed on to the reader and off the local business advertiser. 100% of revenue from single copy sales goes to small businesses. • Reduced our ad prices. Passed some of the cost onto readers, who prefer to the luxury of print! Subscribe to the print issue for just $30 per year! • Started a local marketing tips blog and simplified

Now that we’ve got business out of the way, here’s the fun stuff ! First off, as the cover implies, it’s summertime in Roswell which means it’s time for some Summer Sippin!’ Summer Sippin’ is a 2 month community ‘event’ brought to us by the good folks over at Roswell Inc sponsored by Carl Black Buick and Edge Business Solutions. We feature lots of cool (pun intended) drinks to try at over 50 participating restaurants (not all in one day!), that can be taken to go without the alcohol. You can put as much alcohol in it when you get back home. Organizers have set up meticulous COVID19 protocols to keep drinkers safe - don’t forget to vote! www. summersippin.com.

Associate Publisher DEBRA BEMBENEK

Lucky’s Burger & Brew is part of Roswell’s culture, and we can’t wait to celebrate its 10 Year Anniversary at the end of this month (Aug. 28-29). Their annual “End of Summer Bash” is the place to be to toast to ten years; however, this year Ted renamed it to “The End of the LONGEST Summer EVER Bash.” Appropriate, for sure. Even though we were not printing, we were still publishing! If you missed our four eMagazines put out over the last four months, go check it all out here: www.myroswellmagazine.com/current-issue -- Look for the “read more online” symbol! You’ll notice an icon at the end of some articles, which indicates they continue online, so if you’re reading this issue digitally, just click on this cute little yellow icon >>>>>>>>>>>>> Stay safe! THE RED DIVA REVIEW

How Has COVID-19 Affected the Real Estate Market? BY MICHELLE SLATER

Before the pandemic hit the United States, I got asked about the condition of the real estate market almost daily. Since late March, I've been getting the same question – multiple times a day. Every morning at 9:00 a.m., I study the market by reviewing the latest listings, pendings and closings in 30076 and 30075. Then, at 9:30 I meet with other real estate industry leaders (lately via Zoom) to discuss other factors and markets outside of Roswell to determine the state of the industry as a whole.

Here's the dish! The market is on FIRE and rates remain steady at an all-time low. Inventory has decreased by 20 percent and demand is high. If your home is priced under $800k, this is still very much a seller's market. We know this because there is now less than 6 months of inventory. If you've contemplated listing your home, the time is NOW. We are seeing the top of the market. Next year will be a different story if you are looking for top dollar on the sale of your home. Lately, due of Covid-19 restrictions, houses are being sold in some instances without the buyer ever seeing the it in person. Buyers and sellers are no longer required to even attend the closings! The world has gone virtual yet Real Estate keeps humming right along. Roswell homes, on average, tend to stay on the market for 22 days; and the average sale-to-list-price is 97.5 percent. Not to mention, 34 percent of homes sold are in multiple-offer situations and sell for over list price! Give me a call at 770-866-0041 and let's set up a Zoom call, or meet for a cup of coffee on Canton Street to discuss what you can expect when buying or selling in this market. People still have to move – that has not changed!

*The above statistics reflect the past 30 days in Roswell according to research by Red Diva Real Estate.

Senior living communities are

Getting Creative with Residents

Senior living communities around Roswell are making a difference during this pandemic . By Sally Ellison

S

enior living activities programs ground to a halt when Covid-19 forced residents to self-isolate in their rooms starting in March. But in the time since, staff at retirement communities around Roswell have come up with a range of ways to keep residents entertained and engaged — an effort that becomes increasingly important as the pandemic drags on. Prior to the pandemic, senior living providers were focused on upgrading the resident experience to appeal to the next generation. Though most senior living providers are months into their Covid-19 measures, the disease’s unique pressures and uncertain duration affects the face of resident activities indefinitely. Local news has covered providers’ creativity, including meals to go and delivered, serving drinks and bowls of ice cream from a mobile cart, arranging hallway parties, and holding events outdoors. What used to be one activity director gathering everyone is now the chef handling the happy hours or the marketing 16 - myroswellmagazine.com

director joining in on the exercise. The CDC has recommended avoidance of group transportation, limited interaction and room entrance (virtual communications and check-ins are encouraged); residents are paired with a “buddy” in the facility who will check on them, ensuring that they are getting their needs met. This has led providers to tech-forward solutions, like St. George Village in Roswell’s new Youtube channel. An in-house production team delivers programming directly to residents’ mobile devices as a supplement to the provider’s Covid-19 activities schedule. Many senior living providers are budgeting extra time and money to build these forward-thinking programs, reinventing normal routines at a moment’s notice. Doing so is crucial to help residents — and staff — avoid the emotional toll of long-term social isolation. There is a human contact threshold, whether you’re serving a resident, or you’re a resident yourself. When Addington Place at The Mills enacted its Covid-19 infec-

A Retirement Community for

All Seasons

St. George Village, Roswell’s premier senior living community, is full of delightful discoveries in every time of year. Like our beautiful campus that beckons you to enjoy the walking trails, gardens, putting green and dog park in every season. Or our activities schedule that features events to challenge and nurture mind, body and spirit all year round. We are truly a community for all seasons…even a season of life that is uncertain. We have protocols in place to protect the health and safety of all who live and work here, in every situation. Our nonprofit status as a Life Plan Community ensures that our residents can live independently and actively with the security of knowing their financial assets are protected and the peace of mind that, if ever needed, they have guaranteed access to a continuum of care. We continuously create an environment that encourages our residents to be healthy and happy, and thrive in every season of life. You’re invited to learn more about all of the aspects that make St. George Village a retirement community for all seasons, even in times of uncertainty. Call 678-987-0409 for information, or visit us online at stgeorgevillage.org, and on Facebook and YouTube.

tion control measures earlier this year, fresh programming was needed to provide residents with a variety of activities to engage in each day. They began holding hallway entertainment sessions for residents to socialize and take part in music, games and other activities from their doorways. Addington also started delivering art supplies to stimulate creativity. While custom-made shows like “Music Mondays” (to showcase talent) are in place, residents can still participate in socially-distanced, one-on-one activities such as manicures, games, pet visits, crafts, exercise, video-chats and hair-pampering. St. George Village’s Facebook page states, “In [their] reopening phase, [they] are now working with clients to choose their floor plan and design and finish options,” as well as “allowing outside visitors (two immediate family members at a time) within apartments or outdoors, dining by reservation in the Lakeside Grille and resumption of some activities and wellness classes.” Addington has also taken festivities outside, where one-on-one visitations are set up with tables, chairs, and umbrellas, fit with

an outdoor rug! Addington hosts “Friday Afternoon Delight” and courtyard concerts and has moved their food drive to the main entrance. We’ve got incredible people pulling out all the stops to keep our seniors safe, connected and happy. LOCAL LOVING RETIREMENT LIVING

STAYING ON TOP OF HIS GAME JIM GILLEN, 91 Resident of Sterling Estates of East Cobb

H

ow does Jim Gillen stay on top of his game? Jim explains, “I like being able to do different exercise routines in our spacious Wellness Center at Sterling. The variety really helps my golf and keeps it fun for me. This Ironman isn’t some comic series character, Jim is the Ironman of Sterling Estates Senior Living Community in East Cobb where he utilizes a combination of individual strength and aerobic training taking full advantage of the treadmill, recumbent bikes, and upper/lower body equipment in the wellness center as part of his daily exercise routine. Jim is faithful to his weekend yoga class every Saturday. Wellness Director, Laura Kelly, says “Jim would be the first to agree that his physical fitness has improved significantly since moving into Sterling. He’s been participating recently with the recreation therapy basketball and golf programs we have started at Sterling and, on top of all that, he seems to be

able to throw in an occasional water aerobics class or group cross-training/ boxing class. He is, indisputably, Sterling’s Ironman.” Born in the same year as Arnold Palmer and Popeye, Ironman Jim Gillen, has always been driven in one way or another. As a young boy during World War II, he mowed lawns to earn money. Living in a golf community, it didn’t take long for Jim to learn that more money could be made by being a caddy.

Golfing served Jim well throughout his professional career, and still enjoys the game after taking a couple of years off to care for his beloved wife! Jim celebrated his 91st birthday this year and plays with a handicap of 18 but says he is working on regaining his previous handicap.

We asked this Ironman what his goals are for the next 12 months, and he responded, “I can continue my exercise regime at Sterling Estates even during COVID because our Wellness Center is so large we can stay at least 6 feet apart on the treadmills and Beginning at age ten he carried bags exercise bikes. S

Sterling Estates Senior Living Community Winner: Best of Cobb "Assisted Living Community" 2019 & 2020

Sterling Estates of East Cobb is, quite literally, a living community – where seniors are empowered and enabled to maintain a healthy, holistic lifestyle and a desired level of independence. No stone was left unturned by the local owners/operators who designed a 10-acre campus worthy of their own loved ones. Designed with intention, this beautiful independent and assisted living neighborhood community with both cottages and apartments blends seamlessly with local landscape and architecture, resulting in a “look” that feels like home. “We wanted this to be a neighborhood first, that happened to have senior services,” says Partner Mike Brown. “In order to do that, you must have large acreage, you had to have expansive porches, patios, courtyards and sidewalks throughout. You must have different common places for people to go and to socialize. And now with the Covid-19 pandemic these amenities have become even more important to have for our residents and their families. We’re glad we built the community with all these features in place.”

At Sterling Estates, we can practice “social distancing” and not be socially isolated from each other. Residents are encouraged to be active and engaged, albeit six feet apart and with masks when inside the community’s common spaces, during this pandemic time. The staff uses the appropriate PPE at all times in their interactions with residents. Every precaution is being taken, but with such ample room, there remains a wealth of opportunities for enrichment and interaction with fellow residents at a responsible distance. These include; outside in the courtyard, on the porches and patios, or in the oversized, fine-dining room, where tables have been spread out and all can be served comfortably apart, or in the spacious activity room. While the pandemic persists, family visits continue and are currently taking place outside on the porches, patios and courtyards.

High-risk activities such as grocery or supplies shopping are delegated to staff members who help in the delivery by carefully disinfecting items to reduce unnecessary exposure, and then dropping the groceries off at residents’ cottage or apartment. These circumstances only highlight “the care and affection our staff has for the people who live here, and the care and affection that the residents have for the staff,” according to Brown. “The appreciation that the families have, the level of confidence that they express to us knowing their parents are safe, means the world to us.” At Sterling Estates of East Cobb, life is celebrated; relationships with family, friends and neighbors are valued; and residents are staying socially engaged and Sterling Strong.

With older adults being disproportionately at risk for COVID-19, Sterling has bolstered a transparent line of communication to keep residents and their families comforted and informed of every change. Fitness classes were transitioned outdoors, limited to a smaller number of residents in each class, and properly spaced to ensure the safety of all participants. A number of these classes are recorded on video and shared, giving people the option to participate in the comfort of their own living rooms. The indoor heated swimming pool continues to be used regularly by residents but with safe limits on number of residents in the pool at one time.

ummer Sippin’ - Roswell is a two-month beverage competition that typically occurs from June through July, will take place this year from August 1 through September 30. This event was created in 2016 as an industry support program by Roswell Inc, the city’s economic development organization, and in the event’s fifth year, more than 50 restaurants are competing to have their drink crowned ‘ Best Sip in Roswell’ 2020. “With new safety standards and carryout options, Summer Sippin’ is a great way for our community to safely celebrate the end of summer and support our local food and beverage industry, which has felt the tremendous impact of COVID-19,” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. To ensure the health and wellbeing of both our businesses and patrons, all participating restaurants have implemented “5 ‘Sip Safely’ Standards’, which are in direct alignment with guidance provided by the State of Georgia, City of Roswell and CDC:

Re-thinking corporate and social events.

o singular economic event of our times has had an effect as uniformly devastating as the abrupt shutdown of most of the US and world economy to slow the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

Thousands of small business owners are in these same perilous waters—with no sign of safe harbor anytime soon. Still, Roswell entrepreneurs have always been resourceful and innovative, and stories of impressive pivots to keep money flowing abound across the city. Here are some key steps local small business owners have taken to navigating this disaster.

1. Acceptance

There is no time for the other five stages of grief right now, experts say. Business owners must be prepared to deal with the situation because it is what it is, the only thing you can really control is acceptance of the situation in all its unpleasantness, take responsibility for it, and start where you are.

32 - myroswellmagazine.com

2. Assessment

Thus, get real with your projections by asking yourself this checklist of questions: • What operating expenses can I cover? How can I ease expenses? • What can I reasonably expect based on what I know today? • What am I selling in my business? • What sort of traffic do I see? • Do I have any reserves? Is it possible to create any reserves? • Are there available borrowed funds? • Are there programs available to provide assistance? • What is the operating cycle of my business? ie. How long does it take to generate revenue and pay expenses?

3. Apply

Debra Hull, Vice President of Events of a Lifetime Productions in Roswell, has taken these questions and applied her answers to brainstorm creative solutions to stay busy. For example, how do you host a fundraiser without a ball? Events of a Lifetime has

Debra Hull, Vice President Events of a Lifetime Productions

5. Altruism

applied an intimate approach to such events by creating “themed, Events of a Lifetime Productions offers a stress-free dinner at-home dinners where patrons invite friends to enjoy an evening featuring prominent chefs and fun entertainment have replaced package, inside or outdoors at patron’s homes for charity ‘Gala’ for fundraisers. We enjoy producing turn-key events that raise events. Without the huge dinner budget, there has been greater money because charities have been especially hard hit by Covid.” generosity in aid contributions. What a beautiful bi-product!

4. Adapt

“Life is more than the bottom line,” says Hull. Covid-19 has Not every business can make switches to other revenue streams, served to create a unanimous sense of community within the small business industry. New ideas are shared on a help page but the COVID-19 crisis has sparked some impressive creativity. Hull has comforted many heartbroken brides by suggesting “micro for event professionals and “competition” is warmly sharing weddings,” a “slice” of what the wedding was supposed to be and ideas instead of keeping ideas to one’s self to survive. offering a vow-renewal next year. “We want to help each other,” says Hull, Their custom-curated "Guested" boxes, designed for a small wedding so that grandparents and additional friends and family could feel a part while watching the event live-streamed from venues such as Naylor Hall, complete with the benefit of an anti-viral treatment and testing (temperature taking). These 1½ hour events can be finished down the street at Osteria Matone or Table & Main, both walking distance from Naylor Hall.

“because it’s not going to be like this forever.”

In this unprecedented and challenging time, it’s critical to be aware of what is possible—and what is not. These have been the hardest months the modern world economy has ever endured, and small businesses are notoriously more vulnerable even in good times. Try to keep an upbeat attitude and remember that none of this is your fault. But also keep your eyes and minds open to unexpected opportunities that can ease the pain. @roswellmagazine - 33

10 YEARS

OF

With a lot of careful preparation, Lucky’s announced that it will be celebrating its 10-Year-Anniversary at its annual “End of Summer Bash” August 29. But this year they’re calling it “End of the LONGEST Summer EVER Bash.” Lucky’s Burger and Brew in Roswell is the owners - Ernie and Diane Geyer’s - first Lucky’s location opened in 2010. In the last 10 years, Lucky’s-Roswell has become part of the culture of Roswell, and a big part of this community. Today, Ernie owns 3 dog-friendly restaurants, and says, “When the pandemic hit, we were very thankful and fortunate to have just renovated; and now own Roswell’s largest outside artificial turf venue, furnished with picnic tables, a live stage, and swings along with our 4 season doghouse.” This has been an unusual year for all of Roswell’s restaurants. Managing Partner Ted Lescher announced, “Our 10th Anniversary celebration will take place at the annual ‘End of Summer Bash,’ Ted said, then he added, “But this year we’re calling it the “End of THE LONGEST Summer EVER Bash.” Ain’t that the truth? Sponsored by Gate City Brewery, there will be another 2nd Place Cutest Dog Contest to raise pro-

ceeds for Golden Retriever Rescue. Unlike last year, there will be a virtual signup, and no vendors. 40HZ is playing live, and much more. “The most important thing right now,” said Lescher, is making sure that our customers know they are safe.” It was apparent to us that the staff at Lucky’s takes COVID19 protocols very seriously. They were meticulous about sanitizing, wearing masks and keeping the seating chart in line with the CDC’s physical distance recommendations. The anniversary weekend takes place (outside) in Lucky’s backyard on Friday, August 28th, beginning with a ribbon cutting and a limited anniversary menu. Guests will enjoy live music on the new stage, listening to Doug Rock and East Ward, The 2-day event continues Saturday, August 29th from 6pm - 9pm.

ROSWELL ARTS FUND NEEDS OUR SUPPORT!

I

n the past few months we have been working diligently adapting our projects, expanding our collaborations, and keeping the community connected and engaged. In addition to digitizing many of our programs, we created new opportunities to bring joy and creativity to Roswell. • We continued to install and commission public art (click HERE for AAR virtual ribbon cutting), keeping the artists that rely on us supported. Listen to Mike> • We documented Roswell's collective response to the COVID19 crisis and created a digital repository of photographs. • The photos submitted by locals showcases the resilience and resourcefulness of our people and our local businesses.

• We collected creative resources for both the community and for local artists in need of relief. • We reimagined our pop-up performance series, first migrating it to a digital platform, and now launching a drive-in, distant but still social way to enjoy music together. • We are creating a new series of "pop-in" performances which involve transporting a stage on wheels for parking lot shows to be enjoyed from windows and balconies! • We will facilitate bringing artists to senior living centers and to higher risk groups of individuals. We really need help spreading the word and getting support, so we can continue to work to bring public art to Roswell!

At a time when there’s a lot of talking, typing, posting, commenting and yelling, I realized that we need to stop and truly listen. We all need to go in with an open mind, open heart and closed mouth. We don’t react quickly. We don’t use harsh words. We don’t get defensive. Just listen. I had the honor of hosting a live Facebook discussion on Roswell Magazine with 6 local men. It was real and raw, even uncomfortable at times to hear their truth, but this conversation was importantant. We had over 5,000 people watching that night, and the takeaway was “HOPE.”

Rustic Trades workshop

Big Screen in a Small Town Local custom furniture shop chosen for Spielberg project.

A

A year and a half ago, Rustic Trades Furniture Shop was handpicked as the set for a high production Stephen Spielberg project coming to AppleTV+. The episode was just released in April, and it is streaming now right here.

The Amazing Stories Episode, “The Dynoman and the Volt” starring the late Robert Forester, directed by Susanna Fogel and lead executive producer, Steven Spielberg, tells the story of a young boy and his grandfather as they are transformed by the arrival of a mysterious ring ordered from a comic book 60 years ago. The main character, Joe Harris, (Robert Forester) loved working at a local wood shop creating furniture. The “Amazing Stories” production team needed a quaint, wood shop with a lot of character as a backdrop for the woodworking scenes. Rustic Trades crafts the furniture

sold in their Roswell store in their work shop, which is nestled in the small town of Flowery Branch, and it was the perfect setting. View the episode now on AppleTV+.

How did a local Roswell furniture store land a role in the show? The production company scouted out Rustic Trades, after stumbling across their website, and looking through their social media photos. They felt the RT shop would be the right setting for the episode, so they contacted the owner Clay to set up a walk-through. After visiting the shop with the director, producer and cinematogra-

pher, everything started moving forward. During the pre-filming stage, their team came out to mock up sets and to walk through the scenes in person. Following that, they brought a group out to build part of the film set right in the wood shop.

Filming Days At the Shop Filming consisted of two very long days in our wood shop. Rustic Trades founder Clay Adams, production director Josh Lavigne, and a few craftsmen were asked to be featured by acting in the episode. “It was surreal,” Clay Adams recounts his experience on set, “We showed up for filming and there we were, acting a scene with Robert Forester, who I knew from Breaking Bad.” When asked about the filming process, Clay said, “Seeing the amount of crew it takes to shoot a major production film was a surprise to me. I counted almost 50 people there at one time, all crammed in and around our little wood shop. The crew staff were so unbelievably friendly and grateful. I was visiting with the writer of the episode, Peter Ackerman, talking about the film only to discover he was the writer of my kids favorite movie, Ice Age! What an experience! ” Craftsman Zach Bush reflected on his perspective of the experience, “From the moment we stepped off the shuttle the first day, I can say we had a great time, both on and off set. The Amazing Stories staff did an awesome job at guiding us throughout the show. From the designers picking out our outfits to the crew directing us when the cameras were rolling. Offset we filled our time with talking with crew members, playing guitar, reading, telling jokes and enjoying the seemingly endless supply of food. I would do it again in a heartbeat!” As Josh Lavigne, Rustic Trades production director, recounted the filming experience, he men...continued online www.myroswellmagazine.com/read/

The Deep Roots Patio has become a Roswell local favorite on most afternoons and evenings. The shop has created a comfortable gathering spot where friends and family can toast a special occasion, relax after a long week, or just run in to quickly grab a bottle of wine for dinner. Deep Roots is also the perfect unique location for your next event! Host a bridal shower, birthday party, corporate event, fundraiser, or just a fun friends night out! You may be wondering how this trendy wine bar came about. Owner Dana Gurela developed a passion for wine after her first visit to Napa in 2009. When Dana and husband Todd moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012, she turned that passion into an obsession. Gurela enrolled in wine school and began working in wineries. She became a certified California Wine Appellation Specialist via the San Francisco Wine School and has obtained Wine and Spirits Education Trust Level 2 certification from the Napa Valley Wine Academy. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area for five years, Gurela knew it was time to return home to her family in Georgia, but not without bringing a little piece of wine country with her. The name Deep Roots recognizes the vines' struggle to survive in the vineyard and the connection to family here in Georgia. There are so many amazing new wines to discover! In 2004, she and her husband, Norm, purchased and restored a historic home in the heart of the Roswell Historic District to house their business. That same year, The Roswell Historical Society awarded them the preservation award, recognizing outstanding achievement in the field of preservation by a business or organization.

At the time, in 2017, Renee told City Council, “I feel that civic pride is measured by Renee > on Tai Anderson’s podcast in 2017 observing how citizens take care of and maintain their outside space. Our Historic District streetscape does not measure up. It is in dire need of a face lift,” said Shirley.

Having a love of local history and a vested interest in the area, Renee observed that over the years, the Roswell Historic District had become drab, weed infested and did not reflect the amount of civic pride it deserved. ever has it been more true to say ‘we don’t know ‘what the future holds,’ as circumstances and protocols surrounding the pandemic change every few days, or weeks. There are a lot of unknowns; however, local schools are taking the new normal very seriously and have comprehensive plans in place to address a variety of anticipated challenges. Teachers will work with their students to become comfortable and familiar with any necessary new technology, which means they can teach with fewer distractions than they had in the Spring. March 13, 2020 marked an unprecedented change in campus life at every school in the United States. Teachers were faced with the daunting task of implementing distance learning within a matter of days. Some schools took great care in fortifying

the wellbeing of each child by adding little touches like Dr. Steven Palmer, Head of School for The Cottage School, who recorded a daily messages from different locations on campus every day to send out to the entire student body. “My hope was that when the students see the different classes and structures on campus, coupled with words of encouragement from me, they still feel as deeply connected to TCS as before.” Most of us know Fulton County’s back-to-school COVID19 plan, but what about other schools? Are private and parochial schools returning to in-class instruction? They’re not under County jurisdiction and, as such, are able to decide based on what’s in the best interest of parents and students. We spoke with Kim Weber, Director of

Advancement at The Cottage School and took lots of notes, and decided to let our readers know. The Cottage School is commited to following all of the recommended guidelines from the CDC and the state of Georgia, and then some! The school was able to consult with parents, then make decisions based on what is in the best interest of their students. Weber explained, “We’re offering three options: blended learning, distance learning, and on-campus learning.” ONCAMPUS LEARNING TCS will begin the school year, as usual and practice all safety protocols set in place for masks, social distancing, et al. BLENDED LEARNING For families that do not feel comfortable being in a physical classroom at all, TCS

has adapted the blended learning plan, so students can login to their classroom schedule and access the same learning environment taking place on campus! Blended-learning students will have access to certain electives that will work for an online experience when available. DISTANCE LEARNING If the CDC or government officials require a shelter-in-place or quarantine situation, TCS will shift over to distance learning platforms, planned daily schedules for academics, as well as instructional staff support offered after school.

Face masks may not be needed when appropriate physical distancing options are available. Requirements at most schools include: Masks must be worn when riding on school transportation, entering or exiting a building, within all hallways, and any

Students may have assigned seating in classrooms. Outside guests and consultants will not be allowed on campus for the first semester. ON-CAMPUS SANITATION The Cottage School installed Dynamic Air Cleaners and Remi Halo Air Scrubbers into the HVAC and hired more custodial staff for daily cleaning. There are now new procedures for cleaning desks and seating between classes and there are plenty of sanitizer wipes in every classroom. TCS is able to customize their protocols per grade level. In their elementary program, for example, students will not change classrooms; rather, the teachers will. Buses will be cleaned after every use with disinfectant cleaners.

weeks ago, fine art galleries and museums closed their doors to the public, seemingly overnight. That’s when world- renowned Roswell artist Ford Smith observed an increasing number of families walking by his lakeside home. Social distancing and shelter-in-place orders had the positive effect of drawing families outside for some fresh air and some space. The artist had an idea that inspired his wife, Cristi Smith, to create an outdoor public art exhibit featuring a different, original piece of Ford’s art, every day. She set an easel in their driveway, included serene ‘spa-like’ music, and wrote an introduction letter to their neighbors. The exhibit, “Ford Smith’s Daily Art Escape” would be

a real treat, because although residents of the East Spring Lake community had known about their neighbor, “the famous artist”, many had never seen his paintings in person. The couple has really enjoyed the effect the public art exhibit has had on neighbors driving, biking, walking, skateboarding, or running past the home every day. Cristi tells us, “Our neighbors are very protective about the art. If the wind picks up (as it has recently), someone always makes sure we know.” Local new station, CBS, brought cameras out to the home for a story last week.
