ALPHARETTA | ATLANTA | MGBWHOME.COM
hello.
Hi Alpharetta!!! This Summer/Early Fall issue of Alpharetta Magazine offers something for everyone: budget-friendly things to do, things to do with kids, real estate market updae, restaurant guide, info on the Big Creek Greenway, and more... We had a lot of fun putting this one together for you. Be sure to read all about IronKids 2015, held at Wills Park each year. This kids’ triathlon is among the largest of the IronKids events in the country (p18.) And, after all of the local press lately of residents leaving their pets in their cars, we’ve got a great piece detailing how to care for your pets and keep them safe. Alpharetta is a top dining and shopping destination; and those of us who are blessed to live here are thrilled with all the options available to us and our families. I like to keep these letters short --- who reads them, anyway? So, go out and enjoy the day. Love your families. And, dive into our Summer/Early Fall 2015 issue of Alpharetta Magazine! We hope you like us on Facebook; and please send us your comments and suggestions any time. regina@locallifepublishing.com.

transitional style 101 By RACHEL GREATHOUSE rachelgreathousedesign.com
Transitional Style 101:
I often have clients deciding to move from a traditionally-styled look to a more “transitional” one. This trend is becoming more common as some wish to achieve an easy-living lifestyle, with less “stuff ” filling up their homes. The question I get is, “How do I create a traditional look in my smaller home without sacrificing the cozy feeling?” Below are a few tips to inspire you and help you get the “look” you’re hoping to achieve, without it being necessary to change too many things. We want to keep your home, “homey.” Mixing styles, finishes and fabrics makes a home warm, interesting and unique. Have some fun!
What is transitional style?
Transitional style is a marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Furniture lines are simple, yet sophisticated, featuring either straight lines or rounded profiles. Fabric is as diverse as graphic patterns on overstuffed sofas and textured chenille on sleek wood frames.
Colors:
The transitional palette is very neutral which evokes a clean, serene atmosphere. Start with a really light neutral wall color, and then add texture with fabrics and furniture pieces. I think a little color in some beautiful art or accessories are great for a little “pop,” but you should always begin with a neutral palette, as a sort of “blank canvas.”
Furniture:
Curves combine with straight lines. This flexible aspect of transitional style provides balance, which both men and women really can really appreciate. There is an overall modern-traditional feel and lots of comfort. The furniture is larger and very comfortable, but not at all over bearing. Fewer accessories ensures the focus of the room is on the simplicity and sophistication of the design.
Accessories:
Less is definitely more when it comes to accessorizing with a transitional style. Choose to display items that have meaning or are special to you. Beautiful greenery on a sofa table by a window, close-up photographs
with texture placed in simple frames, and groupings or collections (just not too much) are great. These kinds of groupings provide a contrast to the simplicity of the furniture.
Fabrics:
Neutral palettes provide the perfect backdrop for adding some texture. Chenille, corduroy, velvet, or a great pattern help add texture. These fabrics evoke comfort and luxury when placed with simple furniture pieces…This is the best way to provide curiosity and an interesting dynamic in a room. I always tell my clients,” Surround yourself with what you love.” Go for it! Alter your style a little. Try something new. You will be glad you did!

Recently I took my 12-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son to ALL FIRED UP, a paint-it-yourself ceramic shop. We spent about 20 minutes trying to decide what to choose! My son chose a dragon to paint, my daughter chose a pink cancer ribbon, and I chose a square tile. My children and I even brought our lunch with us and ate while we painted! If you don’t have time to finish painting your piece in one sitting, you are free to come back to finish it another day. All Fired Up provides various paint colors, brushes, templates, and books to help you create your masterpiece. I have never painted a ceramic object in my life (except maybe in grade school), so I was hesitant to try my hand at it. But the store employee gave us simple yet detailed instructions, and I felt I could handle the task! Once we finished our work, we had to leave them at the store for a few days to be fired in the kiln. When I picked up our artwork, I was amazed at how much the firing brought out the bright colors and made our pieces shine! From what I understand, the firing process also makes tableware microwave and dishwasher safe. The price of the piece you choose includes all supplies used to paint it at the store, and there is no fee to sit and paint. So you can stay as long as you like! The ceramics range in price from $5.00 to $100.00, but most pieces cost between $16.00 and $35.00.

IRONKIDS - ALPHARETTA Sunday, September 20, 2015 Wills Park Pool 1815 Old Milton Pkwy
Founded in 1985
, the IronKids’ mission is to inspire and motivate youth through the sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. Young athletes between the ages of 3 and 15 are invited to participate in a variety of events, including triathlon, aquathlon, duathlon and running races, many held during the days leading up to IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races. IRONKIDS participate in age-appropriate distances with an emphasis on safety, fitness and fun.
IronKids Alpharetta is one of the largest youth triathlons in the country. That is a big testament to our city’s youth and their parents. With multiple IronKids “competitions” throughout the US, Europe and Canada, to be among the largest is quite a feat. IronKids offers young Alpharetta athletes the unique opportunity to feel the excitement of competition while enjoying the outdoors and promoting healthy living. Parents, family, and friends are invited to cheer on the racers while enjoying the area and family-centered event. Participants must purchase a 1-day youth USAT (United States Association of Triathletes) membership for $10. Additionally, the registration fee for this event is $50 per child. Parents of young athletes ages 6 to 15 can enter to win a free registration to this year’s race on the CVB’s website through July 31. awesomealpharetta.com/what-to-do/ironkidsalpharetta.

By Tracy Coles, The Hernandez Group KW Realty Consultants Summer is here, and along with the middle of peak season for real estate sales in Alpharetta and North Metro Atlanta. Currently, supplies are low and demand is high, so sellers are getting top dollar for their homes with favorable terms. Property values continue to increase so that sellers have more equity in their homes and there is a pent-up demand of ready, willing and able buyers for homes under $1,000,000 In spite of the low inventory, not every home will sell. Price, condition, and marketing all play a role in getting a home sold. These 5 simple yet effective spring cleaning tips can prepare your home for sale and give you the edge over other sellers: 1. DeClutter – give the illusion of space & allow buyers to envision themselves there. 2. Clean your windows & let the sun shine in. 3. Make your Kitchen & Baths white glove clean. 4. Sniff out smells & say goodbye to bad odors. 5. Trim lawn and trees. Make first impressions count! 6. If you’re considering selling, now is the time to “jump into action” and take advantage of the current market conditions.

ALPHARETTA FARMERS MARKET
Alpharetta Farmers Market • Historic Downtown Alpharetta • 404-402-5389 • alpharettafarmersmarket.com BY CLAIRE MURPHY
Visit the
Alpharetta Farmers Market any Saturday from April through October to discover local farmers with fruits, vegetables and natural meats. Talented gardeners display and sell fresh flowers and herbs. Makers of all sorts of edible home goods from yummy desserts and breads to local raw honey and homemade sauces, jellies, and soaps are available to the public in downtown Alpharetta. In the spring of 2006 the Farmer’s Market took root under an old oak tree in Historic Downtown Alpharetta in the City Parking
Lot. “We wanted the market to grow and support our local farmers,” said Janis Gunther of The Cannery. The Market is open to farmers, gardeners, and makers of edible home goods. In 2011 a Gazebo and signage was added to mark the now permanent, current Farmers Market location. The Alpharetta Business Association (A.B.A.) is the sponsor of this ongoing service to our community. Free parking is available throughout Historic Downtown Alpharetta. alpharettafarmersmarket.com

WHAT GOT US STARTED ON OUR
JUICING JOURNEY The inspiration for Flavor Juicery came with Prerna’s diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. This condition mainly affected the lower colon. As time progressed, the condition took its toll and caused uncontrollable weight loss. Along with the weight loss, a drop in iron levels caused a drop in hemoglobin levels. A cure for her seemed out of reach. To combat the illness, she was given heavy steroids and cutting-edge drugs. They came with negative side effects. She was at the point of getting a blood transfusion, but decided against it. She was given an artificial compound to improve her blood iron, the same that a cancer patient would receive after chemotherapy. It seemed as if there was no clear solution in sight. At this point, the mission became to find a natural cure. The goal was to stabilize her condition by improving her iron and hemoglobin levels, restoring her energy level, and bringing normalcy to her daily routine. The solution came in the form of a juice press machine. After a few months and various combinations and sequences
I Alpharetta, GA 30005
of raw vegetable juices, there was an improvement in her condition. Over the months, the knowledge about various nutrients and what they can do to the human body began to foster an idea. The cold-press juices were great because they were smooth and insoluble fiber-free. After some initial hesitation in drinking the meanest green juices, she got used to them and actually began enjoying them. She is now off of all medication and her body craves for raw juices and complains if she does not drink them. She has been living a very productive life. The opening of the store is set for mid-July. Flavor Juicery will be serving life-changing juices to all. The mission is to help everyone achieve a healthier and fulfilling life. There is also the option to customize the juices, so you can adjust the flavors exactly to your liking. There will be weekly juicing programs as well as juice cleanse programs offered. There will be a selection of fresh protein bars and nut milks. Please check out the website www.flavorjuicery. com for additional information. Flavor Juicery is looking for health-minded people to work at the store. There is a need in production and service counter help. Please send a resume to contact@flavorjuicery.com and flavorjuicery@gmail.com and you will hear back from us!

Get Started With
GOLF
By CHRIS WRIGHT, Director of Golf Alpharetta Athletic Club
H
Have you thought about learning to play golf? Or, maybe start your child in golf? Regardless of your age, it is never too early or late to take up the game of golf. Irrespective of when you start or your level of ability, golf is a sport that can be enjoyed for a life time. Golf is an ideal way to develop lasting relationships, spend time with friends and family, and even use it in business. Some people develop their skill and play competitively. The question is how to get started. Initially, you could start by visiting a local golf facility (practice ranges, golf centers, public and private courses) that offer lessons, classes or complete programs that can help you get started learning the basics of the game. Next you want to find and talk with a qualified instructor, a local PGA professional, which can help you determine what program may be best for you. If you have friends or family that play golf they may be able to recommend a qualified instructor. It is important to ask an instructor about their background and experience perhaps even take the time to observe them teaching another person or group. In your search, you
ALPHARETTA ATHLETIC CLUB HOLE #4
will find that there are different options and methods for learning to play golf. You will need to consider what method will best suit you and best fits your budget, too. There are two primary means to learn to play golf, private lessons or group instruction. Private lessons are a one on one experience with the instructor where you will schedule a series of lessons to learn the game as well as establish and reach certain goals. Private lessons will typically last anywhere from a half to full hour and are slightly more expensive since you are working in a one on one environment. The other option is group instruction. There are a number of options however, two of the better known and more reputable programs offered are SNAG (Starting New At Golf ) and Get Golf Ready. SNAG Golf has been in existence for more than 10 years and is recognized globally as a top learning program for beginners. SNAG was designed for persons of all ages to learn to play golf. The program uses non-traditional equipment to promote a
fun, non-intimidating method for learning FUNdamentals of golf. SNAG address every aspect of the game teaching putting, chipping, pitching and full swing without using extensive golf terminology that is unfamiliar to beginners. Instructors that use SNAG program for teaching provide all of the necessary equipment needed to participate which helps keep the initial investment to start learning to play golf at a minimum. Another popular program is Get Golf Ready. Get Golf Ready is a series of 5 classes that typically covers a brief history of the game, basic golf course terminology as well as various swing techniques to help you play the game. The techniques normally cover putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers and full swing with irons, hybrids and metal woods. Many time instructors that teach get Golf Ready will finish their classes with an on course experience. As you become more experienced you may want to look into a complete player development program such as a Get Golf Ready 2 that will allow you to become even more confident and comfortable playing a

barter is smarter than you think...
When the bill came it was paid with a Big Green Egg … that’s how barter works. Imagine running your business and paying your bills with trade rather than cash. Thousands of businesses right here in Metro Atlanta are doing just that, including The Mad Hatter, a local chimney sweep service and outdoor living company.
“Before I reach for my wallet, I call The Barter Company,” explained Kevin Sparks, owner of The Mad Hatter Service Company. “Nine times out of ten they have a product or service I need. I’ve traded for office furniture, carpeting, painting, printing, advertising, and travel services. If I hadn’t traded my company’s services for those things I would have had to pay for those out-of-pocket.”

The Barter Company is a recognized leader in the barter industry with offices in Georgia and Florida. The company provides businesses with an alternative currency network using barter dollars instead of cash to handle transactions. Protect Our Pets
H
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Hot and humid conditions will last through September, and it is important to remember to protect our pets from the heat in these final “dog days” of summer. There have been numerous incidents of good Samaritans calling 911 to rescue dogs left inside hot cars around Roswell. Normal temperature for dogs averages 101.5F. If their temperature is over 105F, they can suffer from “heat stroke.” When a dog is overheated, it cannot sweat to cool itself like people do. They rely on panting to help decrease their body temperature. When the outside temperature keeps rising, panting cannot help them.
Dogs can get overheated in many ways: 1) Left outside without shade and water on a hot day. Remember that shade changes throughout the day. If dogs are attached to a tether, they could either get tangled and not be able to reach shade, or the shade can move beyond their reach. Water bowls can be knocked over. Make sure to take precautions, and ideally leave them inside with A/C. 2) Left inside without A/C on. Dogs have died in hot houses because the A/C was left off or turned down on a hot day. Small, enclosed spaces without good ventilation are also a problem. 3) Left inside a car. The car’s temperature can
reach over 117F even on a 72F day! Studies repeatedly show that cracking the windows doesn’t help. Many responsible, loving dog owners have had their dogs die from heat stroke because they thought they were leaving them in the car “for just a minute”. Some dogs are inadvertently forgotten. I have a veterinary friend that changed her routine one morning and forgot that she had two sleeping dogs in the back seat. Tragically, they both died. If you are taking your dogs with you in the car, make sure to leave a reminder of them in the front seat with you near your purse/cell phone/ briefcase. Seeing a leash or dog toy before you leave the car will remind you that you have a sleeping dog in the back seat. 4) Exercising your dog on a hot, humid day. It is best to run with your dogs and play with them in the yard during cooler times of day. If the pavement is hot to touch, it is not a good time. Make sure they always have access to shade and water and watch for signs that they are getting tired or overheated. 5) Breed predispositions. Certain breeds are more likely to get heat stroke. Brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Lhasa Apsos cannot pant as effectively as other dogs. 6) Underlying medical conditions. Overweight dogs, and those with heart conditions or breathing problems will overheat more
locallifepublishing.com • roswell magazine spring 2015
By Dr Jennifer Ferrell quickly. Early signs of heat exhaustion are excessive panting, drooling, and looking agitated. As the temperature rises and they start experiencing heat stroke they can collapse, have bright red, dry gums, and rapid heartbeat. Weakness, seizures, coma, and death can develop if they don’t get help quickly! How to help your dog: 1) Get him away from the heat and into shade or A/C 2) Cool her down. Rinse her in cool water and place wet towels on her armpits and stomach. Put her near a fan. 3) Offer cool water if he is alert, but do not force him to drink. 4) Get them ASAP to the closest veterinarian.
What NOT to do? 1) Do NOT use ice water. Ice-cold water can actually make her worse. 2) Don’t cool him off too much. If his temperature goes down below 103F when you are cooling him off, it can keep dropping and he can get hypothermic. 3) Don’t avoid going to the veterinarian. Even if your dog seems better, she can have severe internal problems and should always be examined by your vet.

PRAYER for Our Nation
God our Creator, we pray: Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen
