THE FRIENDS OF THE MILTON LIBRARY {FOML} is pleased to have established a relationship with Local Life Publishing, publisher of Milton Magazine, to publish and distribute our quarterly newsletter. We will be bringing you news and stories from the FOML, along with a calendar of programs and events at the Milton Library. Whether you call Milton, Alpharetta, Crabapple or Roswell home, one thing’s for sure–our community has gotten even better thanks to the addition of the new, state-of-the-art Milton Public Library. FOML, an all volunteer organization, has been around for years, advocating for a new library and the many benefits it brings… increased literacy, access to books, periodicals, computers, multi-media and more. It also serves as a place for people of all ages to gather. We are thrilled to have the new library as the centerpiece of our Milton community and the Friends Barn as our new home. FOML is a 501(c)3 organization established to raise funds and support the programs and ongoing needs of the library not covered in the Fulton County Library budget. We

VOLUNTEERING

THE FRIENDS OF MILTON LIBRARY {FOML} is an organization built on volunteering and welcomes new volunteers at any time. Our volunteers are the life blood of our organization. They man the book store, sort incoming books each Monday, organize the shelves in the Historic Barn and provide much needed assistance on sales days. LIBRARY BOOKSTORE {2 hour shifts during library hours}: Volunteers pick a two hour shift to sit in the library bookstore located in the foyer of the Milton Library. No lifting or sorting required, but you will count money and make change. Work just one day a month, weekly or biweekly. BARN BOOK SALES {Monthly on 2nd Saturdays} Volunteers are available to assist customers in finding books and shelving donations during the sales. You may be asked to sit in the library book store during the barn sales so that both locations are open. BOOK SORTING {Mondays from 10am-12pm} Volunteers may be required to do light lifting to move books around from the donation bin to the shelves. These volunteers also identify books that may be “Found Treasures” to be researched. Although there is heat and air available in the barn, Monday mornings can be brisk. BOOK SCANNING: Book ISBNs are scanned and organized
to be sent for sale in partnership with Better World Books {betterworldbooks.com}. Volunteers must have an internet connected device and unlimited data {library’s Wi-Fi does not reach the barn}. INTERNET BOOK SALES: The FOML is looking for a volunteer to spearhead efforts to sell donated books online. Friends of the Milton Library Big Historic Barn Book Sales The barn is open weekly on Wednesdays from 3:30-7:30 p.m.; Second Saturday Big Barn Sales will be held on February 13, March 12, and April 9. Hardbacks are $2.00, Paperbacks are 50¢, Harlequins are 25¢, Mixed Media (Movies/Music/Books on tape) are $1.00, Children’s Hardbacks are $1.00, Children’s Paperbacks are 50¢. Found Treasures are priced as marked and may be examined upon request.
The library foyer book store is open when volunteers are available. The schedule is posted monthly in the foyer and on Facebook. Vintage set of The Happy Hollisters, Hardcovers with dust jackets {29 books} $200.00 -- The Happy Hollisters series started in 1953 by the Stratemeyer Syndicate and author/ partner Andrew E. Svenson, using the pseudonym Jerry West. It was designed to appeal to young readers, particularly those between the ages of 4 and 12 – the ages of the Hollister family children. What happens with all those books? WE ARE FORTUNATE TO operate in such a giving community, and are continually amazed at the amount of book donations coming through our doors. And yet, try as we might, we are challenged as to the amount of books and materials we can display or offer. Our biggest task is to get as many of the books out on the sales floor to feed a wide array of tastes. People often ask what we do with all these donated books. Here are just a few things you may not know about our book sortings.

Proudly supports the Friends of the Milton Library! We are now a drop-off location for gently used book donations. Bring them to:

Every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to noon we have a group of dedicated volunteers who sort through the week’s donations. Mistakenly donated library books (including school library books) are returned to the library. Donated books are date stamped with the month that they are donated. If a book is not selling after many sales, we will evaluate our options. Our first order of business, of course, is to get the best-looking, most in demand, and newest books out into the barn and the foyer store. The librarians may ask us to find specific good condition hardcover books that have been requested for circulation. Those are given directly to the library. Another group of volunteers scans ISBN barcodes to identify those books that can be sold through our partnership with Better World Books. We are constantly identifying opportunities to maximize the amount of money that can be raised for the library through book donations and sales. Books that are antique or appear to be unique in value are pulled for research and then priced accordingly. These books are located in our “Found Treasures” section at the back of the barn. All other books are sorted by category and shelved. When a book is very popular, it’s not long until we have multiple copies of the same book. Duplicates are pulled and boxed for distribution among other Friends groups in Fulton County. For example, in February we were able to share books with the Adamsville branch.

VISUAL MILTON
IF YOU HAVE VISITED the Milton Library recently, you probably noticed the display of large canvas photographs of rural Milton. Did you know that original copies of the images can be purchased for your home or office? They represent your opportunity to own a piece of Milton history, and they make wonderful gifts!
The photographs appear in the book Bygone Treasures and Timeless Beauties; Barns of Old Milton County by Robert Meyers. The book profiles in text and photos fifty barns in what was once known as Old Milton County. The Dinsmore property where the library is located is one of the properties featured in the book.
Images are limited edition museum quality Giclée prints stretched over sturdy wood support frames, ready to hang. They can be signed by the photographer if you wish.
Three sizes are available. Sizes are approximate. Prices include UPS shipping to any address in the United States. Small (12 x 16) - $175, Medium (18 x 24) - $325, Large (36 x 48) - $950 -- Custom sizes are also available by contacting author/photographer Bob Meyers directly at 770 664-5373.
Giclée is an advanced method of fine art digital printmaking which allows multiple originals to be made from the same image, and they can be made in different sizes. They will last for decades without fading or deterioration.
All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Milton Library which uses the funds to support a wide range of library programs and services.
How to Support the Friends of the Milton Library THE MISSION of the Friends of the Milton Library (FOML) is to support the Milton Library. We are Friends because we love books, support our public libraries, and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow members. The FOML provides financial support to enrich many library programs and services that are not covered by the Fulton County budget. There are many ways to support the FOML. Support the
Friends by joining the FOML, volunteering at one of our many events, contributing to the Giving Tree, or by purchasing artwork from Visual Milton.
