BARN BIRDHOUSE D O N AT E D T O L I B R A R Y

LOCAL ARTISAN DAVID BROOKS donated a homemade birdhouse to the library. Here is his description of the gift: “This barn was built for people, young and old, to admire, to touch and to visualize a grand old barn by gazing on this miniature model. This barn was built for animals, not chickens, pigs, horses or cows, but for birds to nest in the hayloft, or escape the cold and rain in the winter. Birds can enter the hayloft from the opening on the front of the barn, while people can help the birds by cleaning out leftover nests. The hayloft can be cleaned by opening the back door, marked with a large M – M is for Milton. This barn has history in its walls, as it was primarily built with wood saved from the original barns on the Milton library grounds. The wood is likely oak, milled from once nearby trees. Oak is a dense, heavy and rot resistant wood, and was plentiful for building houses and barns in the early days of the Milton area. Notice the kerf or saw marks on the barn sides. The roof of the barn is covered with homemade cedar shingles, not old, but repurposed from leftover cedar siding. Cedar is also a rot resistant wood, and will turn grey with aging, much like the oak wood that is utilized for the barn walls. The barn birdhouse measures approximately two feet tall and two feet wide, and weighs 40 pounds. It is weatherproof and can be placed indoors or outdoors.”

BBQ & BLUEGRASS BIRTHDAY BASH

B

A HUGE SUCCESS!

FOML’S BBQ & Bluegrass Birthday Bash was a huge success this summer! It is hard to believe, but our wonderful “new” Milton library has celebrated its one year anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Friends of the Milton Library, FOML, organized a birthday bash that will be long remembered by the large crowd that assembled July 16 under the grand old oak tree beside the library. “It was just like an old-fashioned family picnic,” says FOML Board member Christy McWhorter, who spearheaded the event.

Checkers, and Tic Tac Toe, along with Ladderball and Corn Hole games that kids and adults enjoyed. Dr. Gabriel Morley, Director of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System, was among the VIPs in attendance. “It was a great community event,” according to Kimberly Snoddy-George, Branch Manager of the library, “just the kind of program we want to encourage in our community.”

Attendees feasted on delicious barbeque prepared on site by ‘Cue Barbeque on Highway 9 and enjoyed the bluegrass and Americana music of Control Burn, a well-known Atlanta trio. They were opened by Echoes, a group of talented area middle and high school RockU musicians. Highlights of the event included giant lawn Scrabble, TO ADVERTISE: INFO@LOCALLIFEPUBLISHING.COM

I

GOOD THINGS COME IN PAIRS!

IT IS SAID THAT “good things come in pairs.” Living proof of that statement is the Friends of the Milton Library Board of Directors where the dynamic duo of Marsha and Kevin Spear help to keep things moving in the right direction. Marsha is co-president of the board and Kevin is its newest member. Marsha, a Board Member since inception, says “We have lived in Milton for twenty years now. I am honored to be part of this highly active and exceptionally engaged group. It is exciting to be able to contribute to the ongoing success of our yearling library. It rapidly has become interwoven into the fabric of our community.” Kevin began volunteering to sell books at the FOML bookstore one year ago. “I have been truly impressed by the number of parents who have instilled the love of books and reading in their children. I have been equally impressed with the number of teachers (public, private and home schoolers) that further enrich the learning experience with physical books. I was quite proud to join this Board and discover additional ways to serve our library and Milton.” Marsha, a financial planner with Edward Jones and Kevin, a retired executive with PNC Bank, and UPS Capital, have long been active in community affairs. Marsha and Kevin both hail

from Pittsburgh. Marsha received her BS and MBA from Pitt. Kevin earned his BS from West Virginia Wesleyan College and his MBA from Pitt. The couple are bona fide high school sweethearts. The twosome enjoys international travel, cycling, golf and, obviously reading. They are owned by two Siberian huskies. “We are fortunate to have two such committed individuals giving their all to support our library,” says Branch Manager Kimberly Snoddy-George. In July, the library celebrated its oneyear anniversary.

Q: Give an example of a really successful program at the library. A: There are so many, but one in particular comes to mind. The astronomy program has been so successful that we had to create two programs, one for adults and one for children. We are so thankful Jeff Thompson walked into the branch and spoke with me about sharing his interest in astronomy. I researched successful astronomy programs at other libraries. This led to a series of workshops by Jeff. He even donated his telescope! This experience illustrates how community involvement can contribute to the library. It’s fantastic to partner with local subject matter experts.

A Conversation with our Branch Manager Like libraries of a few years ago, today’s community libraries provide information and support for education, arts and culture. The difference is technology and programming, says Milton Library’s Branch Manager Kimberly SnoddyGeorge. We asked Ms. George to answer a few questions about our new, one year old, library. Q: What does our library add to our town? A: We have programs for all ages, from infants to seniors. Parents with infants and preschoolers enjoy weekly Storytime. Streams of Middle, High School, and Adult students come to the library to use the highly sought after 2 hour limit study rooms. Seniors use the reading areas to browse newspapers and magazines. We averaged 21 programs per month during the past year supported by a welcoming and helpful staff. Volunteers are also essential to the library. Without the support of the Friends of Milton Library we would not be able to provide great programming. STEM educational programming is needed but without funding from Friends groups or volunteers it is difficult to provide.

Q: What makes a good librarian? A: Good librarians like people. A good librarian needs to be an excellent listener, communicator and a lover of sharing knowledge and information, a great collaborator and personable. Q: How did you become a librarian? A: I became a librarian after I found out how much I enjoyed research as a paralegal at a large Atlanta law firm. I decided to get a Masters in Library and Information Science and became the firm’s first law librarian. Q: Do you know how many people visited the library during its first year? A: Approximately 83,000. The trend is upward. Q: Do any organizations use the library regularly? A: Quite a few. Some examples are The City of Milton, The Friends of Milton Library, health organizations, and Homeowner Associations’ annual meetings. The Junior Toastmasters group will be meeting here in the fall. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I enjoy spending time with my son and daughter, reading, music, cooking, exercise, and traveling.

We love our regular visitors! Some bring us brownies and fresh tomatoes from their gardens. What a treat!

How to Support the Friends of the Milton Library THE MISSION of the Friends of the Milton Library (FOML) is to support the Milton Library. We are Friends because we love books, support our public libraries, and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow members. The FOML provides financial support to enrich many library programs and services that are not covered by the Fulton County budget. There are many ways to support the FOML. Support the

Friends by joining the FOML, volunteering at one of our many events, contributing to the Giving Tree, or by purchasing artwork from Visual Milton. You can also support the FOML by donating and buying books at our monthly book sales. For the latest in Friends news, or other library-related information, please follow us facebook.com/FOMLGA.
