Hey! Thanks for picking up our summer issue! There’s something pretty special about summers in the south; picking berries, catching lightning bugs, concerts in the park, movies on the lawn, tubing, lemonade on the porch, the list goes on. I hope this finds you getting some time to unplug, relax and recharge because that’s what summers are all about. If you have more free time on your hands this summer, I would encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and explore a new part of Marietta. If you live on the East side, head on over to the West side, and vice versa. This magazine tries to cover ALL of Marietta, so flip through the pages to see what’s happening on both sides of town--whether it be a concert, new restaurant or outdoor movie, it will be worth the drive! I know Sope Creek Trails is on my Marietta summer bucket list! Thanks for your continued support. We love our Gem City, and appreciate you! Now go jump in the lake and enjoy your summer!

City of Marietta Police offers us Pet Summer Safety & Etiquette
If you can only remember 2 things when you bring your dog to Marietta’s awesome outdoor summmer events:
Water + Leash Pet summer safety and etiquette Temperatures in Marietta spiked in the upper nineties before June first! While it has dropped a few degrees this week, we are still having an unusually hot spring with summer right around the corner. It’s time for some quick reminders about pet safety and etiquette. The City of Marietta is excited about the upcoming events that will be hosted on the square and Glover Park area. From Juneteenth, to 4th of July, art-walks, Friday night concert series and the farmer’s market, we are expecting thousands of visitors. Many of those visitors will be of the four-legged variety, or fur babies. The Marietta Police Department would like to share a friendly reminder about the danger to your pets when exposed to extreme heat. • Don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Its body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep
walks on asphalt to a minimum. Try it yourself with your barefeet and you’ll understand. • Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water in the summer and if kept outside, make sure there’s a shady spot for them. Limit summer exercise for pets when it’s hot and keep them indoors when the temperatures spike. • Symptoms of overheating in pets: Early signs include excessive panting, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. • Animals with flat faces, like Pugs, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. If you bring your pets out for any of our fantastic events, please be prepared with fresh water, poop pick-up bags, a leash and make sure they’re curent on their vaccines. Then, ENJOY your visit to our beautiful downtown area. Please be conscious of their time in the heat and come prepared to ensure their safety.
Editor’s Note: When we launched Marietta Magazine local business owners reached out to share their love for Marietta with us. The team at Harry Norman - Cobb Marietta offered to write a column providing uplifting content each issue about Marietta life as loved by those who know best.
D
DID YOU KNOW MARIETTA FOUND its origins as a resort town? The clean fresh air and lower humidity (really?) brought folks up from the Georgia coast for the summer. Many prominent families had summer homes in the area; and the Kennesaw House, now home to the Marietta Museum of History, opened in 1855 (then named the Fletcher House) to host visitors during the summer months. Marietta has once again become a destination - perhaps not because of its “cooler” weather, but because of its history and the wide variety of family activities. We asked Marietta moms and Harry Norman sales associates Heather Gentry-Simon, Carson Wernz, Veronica Anderson, Jennifer Martin and Lindsey Ramsey to give us their best “summer fun” ideas: ELIZABETH PORTER PARK 370 Montgomery St NE, Marietta, GA 30060
14 | June/July 2019
A new park opened late last summer which is named after a local African-American woman, Elizabeth Porter. She was instrumental in ensuring quality healthcare in Marietta during the years that segregation dominated the culture. We learned more about Ms. Porter was the first director of the Canteen, a repurposing of the Cobb Cooperative Hospital and a fixture at the center from 1952 to her retirement in 1974. Moms say their children especially love cooling off in the sprayground, and the park makes a great spot for birthday parties or other occasions with its covered pavilion which can be rented by the public. Playing at the park is only $2 per day for Marietta residents. Find out more at www.marietta.gov. SUMMER CAMPS The Marietta Museum of Art summer camp received ten thumbs up from our five moms. Young artists - ages 5

The Laurel Park Tennis Center offers multiple age group camps throughout the summer where children from beginner to advanced receive instruction, as well as positive encouragement to get involved in active outdoor sports. www.tennisdynamics.net Each of the central Marietta Churches offer VBS for kids in the summer, so check out their websites for details. Another great kid-friendly activity is attending the movie series at the Earl & Rachel Smith Strand Theater. This is a great idea, especially for rainy days. www.earlsmithstrand.org DAY TRIPS Our moms have some great suggestions for day trips. All the things to do in Chattanooga offers the option of a day trip or a night or two in town. The Tennessee Aquarium is an obvious highlight and the Creative Discovery Museum received several votes. An “old school” day trip is to BabyLand General Hospital in Cleveland, GA, the “birthplace” of Cabbage Patch Kids, this converted clinic has become the adoption center for Cabbage Patch

dolls. Beach trips don’t have to be five hours. Head up to our neighbor, Acworth, and enjoy the beach for a small parking fee. Paddle boards and kayaks can be rented, and you can sleep in your own bed that night. Gibbs Gardens offers year-round tours and summer concerts for the family and it’s only an hour away. Day trips to Amicalola Falls, Rock City, Fernbank, the Tellus Science Museum and the Georgia Aquarium also made the list. JUST ENJOYING MARIETTA There are so many family-friendly activities in Marietta, like enjoying a free concert, having a picnic in Glover Park, shopping the Saturday Farmer’s Market, heading over to the Marietta Museum of History and, of course Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. We love living working and playing in Marietta and know you will, too!

Snoring A simple annoyance or a sign of something more serious? by Antonio Nunez, Jr., DDS Marietta Smiles Cosmetic and Family Dentistry
MANY PEOPLE SNORE, and most are unaware of it unless they’re told about it. Snoring is often ignored as being an unavoidable part of a person’s life. But if you snore loudly and also experience daytime sleepiness, you may be suffering from Sleep Apnea. If you have Sleep Apnea, your breathing is reduced or may even stop completely for short periods while you sleep. Less oxygen gets to your brain and body, making the heart work harder to compensate. Sleep Apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and other problems if left untreated. Sleep Apnea is often caused by a relaxation of the muscles of the lower jaw. This lets your jaw and tongue fall back and obstruct the flow of air as you try to breathe. An oral appliance can be an effective treatment for Sleep Apnea because it keeps your jaw positioned forward and helps prevent the tongue from blocking your airflow.
MENTION THIS AD FOR A

Sleep Apnea can also be treated with surgery, but more commonly it is treated by using a CPAP machine and face mask. However, many people find that they cannot tolerate wearing a CPAP mask or the constant air pressure. For these patients, an oral appliance may be a better option. Your doctor can confirm whether you have Sleep Apnea by ordering a sleep test. The test can be done at a sleep center or at home using portable sensors that you apply. The sleep test is then reviewed by a sleep physician who determines if you have Sleep Apnea and how severe it is. At Marietta Smiles, we can provide not only the home sleep study kit, but also a specialized sleep study with a temporary oral appliance that automatically finds the correct position for your jaw to give you the best improvement in your breathing while you sleep. We can then make a custom appliance in that optimum position to treat your Sleep Apnea most effectively. We’d welcome the chance to explain more about how Marietta Smiles can treat Sleep Apnea with Oral Appliance Therapy. Call us today to set up a complimentary Sleep Consultation.

Everything on the menu is house-made by husband and wife owners and depends on local farmers to provide the freshest ingredients. They’ve recently added lunch hours and an extra day of service on Tuesdays. Why add lunch? We wanted another opportunity to connect with guests, and lunch is the perfect time to do that! There’s a misconception that we are a “special occasion” only restaurant, when we actually love creating a range of dishes for people, from a fried chicken sandwich and house-made chips at lunch, to duck carbonara at dinner. What new menu item are you excited about? Since we rely totally on our farmers, we are always excited when a new season brings ingredients that we haven’t seen for awhile. The first tomatoes of the season are in and we’re using them for our take on a BLT. This dish uses tasso, arugula, and Pullman bread to make the perfect summertime sandwich!

Over 50 Sterling Estates residents competed in 23 Events last month in Fulton County’s Golden Games events organized by Fulton County Parks & Recreation.
Hear what some of the residents had to say: PAT KEANE, 83 years old participated in the rock-climbing event. She stated “I believe you should never look at age as an obstacle to a way of living. Try everything!” Pat’s family and friends were astonished to see her rock-climbing on a Facebook video post. Pat is from Ireland and still has family and friends there who are proud to share Pat’s success in Golden Games! In fact, her rock-climbing photo has become so popular it is hanging up in “Blue Haven Hotel,” a pub in Ireland! LEON ISAACS, 76 years old, received a silver medal for his performance in the Men’s Virtual Bicycle 5k. Leon stated, “[The silver medal] was a good accomplishment. I haven’t felt this good in 5 years. It really got me in good shape. From this experience, I have a more positive self-esteem and feel happier. Just because I’m 76, I can still do it…swim and compete…” (Leon also competed in Team Trivia, Virtual Bicycle 5k, Swimming- Men’s 25m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle) JIM GILLEN, 90 years old – Jim stated “It is nice to be able to do a variety of events and see how well you can compete with people in your age group. I especially enjoyed the Biathlon (1-mile treadmill-walk, 1 mile on recumbent bike). I do that amount of exercise most days, so it was good to see my hard work pay off. Competition never gets old and neither do we. That’s our attitude.”
MARLENE RAACK, 87 years old – Wellness Director, Laura Kelly said, “When Marlene first started training with wellness, she was averaging about one mile on the recumbent bike. With pure determination and resilience, Marlene trained daily utilizing our RT and wellness program – aquatic therapy, biking, and “Sittercise” classes. Her goal was to compete in the Virtual Bicycle 5k at the Golden Games. She competed and achieved a personal record biking the 5k in 18 minutes.” Marlene medaled in the canasta tournament and Wii bowling. Sterling Estates Senior Living Communities have a unique Wellness Model at their communities combining Fitness & Exercise Science with Recreational Therapy (RT) to promote a holistic approach to active aging. Their large Wellness Centers with indoor salt water therapeutic pools and ample space from group classes as well as plenty of age appropriate exercise equipment enable residents to make the most of their exercise time. Wellness Director, Laura Kelly stated “Through recreational therapy that we practice daily at our communities and now as participants in the “Golden Games”, you’re more than a resident, more than your age, more than your aging barriers. You’re part of a team...you are an athlete!” Staying active in our Wellness Programs creates an attitude expressed by one of our residents above, “Competition never gets old, and neither do we.”
JACK BROMAN, 86 years old - The Wellness Director at Sterling Estates of East Cobb, Laura Kelly said, “Jack lives in our independent living cottages in the community. If you could have seen the face Jack gave me when I approached him about signing up for the basketball free throw competition! He had never played basketball before. ep cool before air conditioning in homes?
By Trevor Beeman, Executive Director Cobb Landmarks
T
This time of year it is easy to take air conditioning for granted. But step outside for a few moments and you are reminded just how sweltering and humid summers in Marietta can be! But it wasn’t that long ago that Mariettans had to face the heat alone, without air conditioning or even electric fans. So how did they cope? Marietta’s historic William Root House Museum offers us a look. From June 1st through September 28, 2019, the museum is presenting its annual “Dressed for Summer” exhibition, which explores the tips and tricks our southern ancestors used to try to beat the heat. Inside the house, the rooms have been transformed as they would have been during the hot summer months of the 1860s. Some of the tricks they used might seem silly to us, but a few of them can be useful even today. Some of the changes that would have been made between winter and summer include taking down thick winter drapes and replacing them with thin sheers they called “glass curtains.” These curtains allowed for air flow while keeping insects out. White slipcovers would have been used to cover delicate upholstered furniture to protect the fabric from the harsh sunlight. Left uncovered, the natural dyes in the fabric would have bleached out quickly. Other tricks included removing thick rugs and carpeting and sealing up unused fireplaces. These small changes helped make southern homes bearable, if not cool, during the hot summer months. If you happen to be near the Root House, the exhibit is worth checking out. The museum is one of the only house museums in the nation that offers this type of summer display, and it’s right here in Marietta! Oh, and don't worry, they have air conditioning.
