POST FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD - I grew up in a very big, loving, {crazy} family with five brothers and five sisters. My mom and a couple of the sisters (the one with a good voice plus the one that didn't sing very well at all) would often burst into song seemingly out of no where. Classical musical movies were always on TV, especially during the holidays. Because of this I often woke up (and still do!) with certain songs already playing in my head in the mornings. I can here Oliver Twist's 'Food Glorious Food' anytime I write out the word 'food.'

Exciting things happening here at RM: this is issue #23; we are beginning our 5th Year publishing RM; and we are kicking off 2019 with a 'Food' theme, as we anticipate another great Roswell Restaurant Week (Jan 24 - Feb 2) presented by Roswell Inc for the fifth year. #eatlocal.

We had to add an extra 16 pages near deadline, and we're glad we held the presses, because we were able to pack so much food inside this issue's pages, while still bringing you interesting content about arts, culture and entertainment.

New Developments Roswell Village Shopping Center Roswell Village Shopping Center is a 149,261-square-foot community shopping center being redeveloped and managed by Sterling Organization (www. sterlingorganization.com) which has over 10 million square feet of retail assets in its portfolio. RV is in buildout and located at the intersection of Holcomb Bridge Rd and Hwy 9. New anchors include Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls and Crunch Fitness. Other businesses slated for RV include: Curves, Sarah’s Donuts, RV Shoe Repair and Phenix Salon Suites. Current and remaining tenants include: Taco Linda, Jersey Mike’s and Pizza Hut.

500 New Jobs For Roswell McKesson Corporation, a global leader in healthcare supply chain management solutions, retail pharmacy, and healthcare information technology, will be moving its Atlanta Hub to Roswell, Georgia in 2019. This move will relocate existing employees from the company’s current office in Alpharetta bringing more than 500 high-quality jobs to the city of Roswell, with an anticipated move-in date in the summer of 2019. With this move, McKesson will become a Top 5 company in Roswell by number of employees. The company has signed a 10-year lease for 104,000 square feet in the Stonebridge I building of Sanctuary Park, located at 1110 Sanctuary Parkway, which is the portion of the office park within Roswell city limits. Major factors in the decision to relocate to Roswell include location, availability of space, and quality of life. This location is also in Roswell’s Opportunity Zone, an area of the city designated as part of the state incentive program that provides tax credits for net new jobs created within the State of Georgia.

New Hotels Coming Soon Since 2017, four hotel projects—one boutique and three business class— have been announced for Roswell. Home 2 Suites by Hilton and Springhill Suites by Marriott were announced in July 2017, Element by Westin was announced in March 2018, and Canton Place Development announced the expansion of its boutique hotel and mixed-use project in September 2018. So, where do these hotel projects currently stand since the news broke for each? We’d like to provide you with a quick project update for all four hotels. Home 2 Suites and Springhill Suites, which 14 | Restaurant Issue

are both located off Westside Parkway, broke ground in 2018 and are projected to finish construction by late 2019, early 2020.

Combined, these two projects will bring 196 rooms to the city for business travelers. Element by Westin, located between Home 2 Suites and Springhill Suites, has received its land disturbance permit (LPD) and broke ground by the end of 2018. Element will have 91 rooms, an outdoor pool, restaurant, full-service bar, and a 250+ capacity meeting space. Once complete, these three business class hotels will bring an estimated 150+ new jobs and approximately $39 million in capital investment to Roswell, along with an estimated $598,000+ in annual revenue generation for the city. Canton Place Development’s Boutique Hotel and mixed-use development, which is planned to open in Roswell’s Historic District, will include 125 rooms and a variety of unique, curated retail and restaurant space. This $88.2 million project is hoping to break ground by the end of 2018, with plans to be completed by the end of 2020.

Roswell Downtown Development Authority Announces Selection for 'Southern Skillet Plaza' Redevelopment Roswell Downtown Development Authority announced on Jan. 11, the selection of S.J. Collins Enterprises to redevelop the Southern Skillet Plaza site. S.J. Collins Enterprises, a commercial real estate development firm based in Fairburn, was one of six developer submissions in response to the DDA's request for proposal on Oct. 31. The ‘Southern Skillet’ site is located off Alpharetta Highway with access to Frazier Street. The closing date of this $5 million agreement is targeted for June with construction projected to start by the end of 2019. Per S.J. Collins Enterprises’ proposal in November, the site will be redeveloped for mixed-use with intentions for “a boutique grocery store, restaurants, shops and offices.” “Our team looks forward to the opportunity to bring a dynamic and diverse customer experience to this thriving and emerging location,” said S.J. Collins Enterprises Partner Jeff Garrison. S.J. Collins intends on bringing a “boutique grocer” to the space. As for retail, intentions are for businesses locating there to be “complimentary to the type of customer who will go to the grocery store and restaurants," citing “yoga, salon and high end spa” as potential examples.

Mortgage interest rates at the end of 2018 were still trending under 5%. While rates are at their highest level since February 2011, they remain much lower than the historic high of more than 18% in 1981. 3. Your home is in a higher price bracket or in a second home market. These markets are more susceptible to a downturn and are already seeing significant changes in market dynamics.

4. While there are certainly financial factors that go into a decision to sell your home, the driving forces behind the majority of sales we manage are personal ones. Your personal home is not an investment – it may make money or lose money, but at the end of the day it is yours and you have enjoyed it.

Selling is about change, new locations, growing families, empty nesters, changes of scenery. It’s a personal decision based on emotion and family. If you need more storage, have grown your family, or have more space than you want to maintain, it’s a good time to sell. But again, if these factors may be in play soon, you may want to consider selling sooner rather than later.

If you love the home you’re in and want to stay in it for the next 5 years or more, definitely wait until then to revisit the question of whether to sell. Yoga+Fitness concept Two young entrepreneurs chose to launch their business in the heart of historic downtown Roswell, right on Canton Street.

WHEN OUR BODIES, MINDS AND SPIRITS are in sync, life seems a little easier, lighter, right?

We are relaxed, calm, at peace and connected.

Jose Ramos and Nicole Valle live this way by practicing yoga, meditation and having fitness routines. These two young entrepreneurs opened BODEGA Fitness Boutique last month on Canton Street because they felt passionate about helping others discover the benefits of balanced living.

They made a business plan, settled on a great location in a re-imagined commercial garage in the heart of historic downtown Roswell, and are now busily offering a variety of classes to our community. Today, BODEGA is basically a “one-stop shop” destination for yoga, meditation, and functional high-intensity interval training (HIIT) group classes. Inside we find a deliberate emphasis on good vibes, good health and whole-person wellness, and no traces of negativity or harsh motivational techniques.

YOGA Yoga uses breathing techniques, exercise and meditation to improve health and happiness. As yoga is a science, there is no dogma or belief system attached to it. Yoga simply tells us to do a certain practice and then to feel the effect of that practice, e.g. if we breathe slowly in a relaxed manner we will slow our heart rate.

ing (pranayama), control of subtle forces (mudra and bandha), cleansing the body-mind (shat karma), visualizations, chanting of mantras, and many forms of meditation. In the West, yoga consists primarily of stretching exercises to increase flexibility, relax the body, build strength and coordination and achieve balance.

BODEGA offers hourlong wake-up yoga sessions in the morning and candle-lit yoga sessions in the evening. These sessions are typically focused on either core strength or flow state.

MEDITATION Meditation is a precise technique for attaining a state of consciousness - while awake - which clears and focuses the mind, relaxes the body and focuses us inward rather than on externals. Instructors at BODEGA are trained to quell excessive thoughts and distractions, thus opening the heart, using meditation techniques and overall positivity. This reflects on their Instagram page, full of happy faces and encouraging words. (@bodega.fitness.boutique) FITNESS Functional and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is offered in group classes led by passionate and encouraging instructors. During these 45 minutes of cardio, we alternate between high-intensity workouts and low-intensity recovery periods. This type of exercise is very beneficial to the heart and for improving metabolism. The intensity is tough for some, but instructors help us push through to achieve the fantastic state of satisfaction from each and every class.

A full schedule of class times can be found on a free smartphone app called MINDBODY, where anyone can sign up easily online at just $25 per class. Individual and private training sessions are also available for those of us who learn best one-on-one.

AT 4PM, DEC 12, 2018 at MERCEDES BENZ STADIUM the Blessed Trinity Catholic High School cheerleaders raised a 10-foot by 18-foot banner with the pre-game statement, “Defend the Title.”

The players ran through it pumped to play in the 2018 Class AAAA state football championship game against Cartersville. Four quarters later, Blessed Trinity would leave Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a 23-9 victory, its second consecutive state championship and a perfect 15-0 season.

Both teams were 14-0 coming into the big game. In fact, Cartersville had lost only once in the last four seasons when they fell to Blessed Trinity in a 2017 playoff match-up. This was a much-anticipated event for a number of reasons.

stopped the Purple Hurricanes every time they threatened and forced Cartersville to punt seven times.

Before head coach Tim McFarlin arrived in 2011, the Titans had struggled a bit to get their footing, by then winning only one region championship and having never posted double-digit wins in a season; but now they can boast 49 wins in just the last four.

Five seniors have been major contributors since their freshman seasons and helped lead BT to three state championship games (and two rings!) in their four seasons: Ryan Davis, J.D. Bertrand, Steele Chambers, Jake Smith and J.R. Bivens.

For this 2018 championship game, McFarlin sacrificially decided not to play senior defensive star J.D. Bertrand, who suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee during the team’s previous playoff game. Bertrand wanted to play, but McFarlin wasn’t about to jeopardize the student-athlete’s future at Notre Dame.

Working against one of the state’s top defenses, Steele Chambers went 97 yards on 23 carries and converted on several crucial first downs.

Ryan Davis, who starred on both sides of the ball had seven of BT’s 10 receptions for 135 of BT’s 156 passing yards (and another catch Issue #23 | @roswellmagazine

nullified by a penalty). Davis set up the first Blessed Trinity touchdown with a 43-yard catch in the opening period, making a nice grab in coverage on an excellent throw by Jake Smith.

That led to a 9-yard scoring toss from Smith to sophomore fullback Ryan Dupont, who slipped out of the backfield to give the Titans a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter that they would never relinquish.

While the Titans will sorely miss the five seniors who played four seasons at the varsity level (Davis, Bertrand, Ohio State-bound Steele Chambers and Bivens), they will lose only a handful of other front line seniors, among them Poma and Jake Lyons on defense, offensive lineman Jack Jacobs and kicker Ethan Chauvin.

Steele Chambers told the Georgia Bulletin the team was able to win it all because of love.

“What made this team so successful was our love for one another. When you have the ability to tell your brother next to you how much you love them, and commit yourself to doing whatever it takes to help them succeed, you can overcome anything,” said Chambers. “That’s what sets us apart from the rest. That’s why we’re two-time state champions. Love!”

LIVING IN THE SOUTH, WE TYPICALLY HAVE a mild winter.

We may have a few weeks of weather in the 30’s or below, but for the most part our highs range anywhere from the 40’s and 50’s. Because the winters are mild, and the big chains pay attention to national trends, I have turned my sights toward leather as well as the versatile vegan leather options to extend my wardrobe through the winter months.

Our favorite options for best all around are some of the affordable vegan leather pieces. Those that offer a draping effect are in style and seem to be in every store. I recently attended a cocktail event in town and dressed down my Christian Siriano jumpsuit in a vegan leather jacket (photos below) from CollectionB ($29). I found it at the local TJ Maxx and it was a win for the event and for my wallet.

Getting the most out of a staple piece like a leather jacket is really in the details. If you are a professional and need the jacket for work as well as play, less is more. Less attention to the zippers and pockets, limited if any studding at all and a color that will play off nudes, brown and black. Leather is the great southern wardrobe extender making dresses, jean, and t-shirts an option from fall to spring. It’s a worthy investment piece and with a plethora of affordable pleather options that are emerging, it’s an easy choice for the cost and cruelty conscience.

If you have the luxury of not adhering to a dress code, then you can add a little more detail and flare to a jacket but choose wisely to make the most out of your investment. Too many details can limit the versatility of the piece. Ann Taylor has a suitable faux leather jacket ($139) that has just enough personality to dress up some jeans or dress down a dress. I chose the olive green, so I could pair it with as many colors as possible.

Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Executive Director for 28 years has retired; and over the last couple of months many in the community have taken her retirement as an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come with Dotty Etris at the helm.

FEW PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN AS MUCH TIME BOTH professionally and personally to making Roswell a better place to live than Dotty Etris. She was a leader in the formation and development of the Chattahoochee Nature Center, when in 1992, Roswell Mayor W.L. “Pug” Mabry asked her to take the job as inaugural director of the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau.

That was just the beginning. And, over the last couple of months - as Dotty's retirement neared - I’ve read many articles in the local print, online and social media offering accolades or noting various awards she earned over the 28 years she served as executive director of Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau. It's been a documented community collective expression of the gratitude and tremendous respect so many individuals, colleagues 30 | Restaurant Issue

and organizations have for this woman.

Now that Dotty has retired after 28 years in service to Roswell, I’m reflecting on what it is about her that earned my affection and respect so easily. In our first meeting, she wasn’t trying to impress me or condescend me. She didn’t discourage or encourage me. She wasn’t trying to get something from me and wasn’t offering me anything.

Most importantly, she was the first to offer me respect.

And that just might be her secret. Respect is a gift she offers everyone. Whether we keep her respect is up to us.

The first time I met Dotty Etris was in the Fall of 2014, when Steve Stroud pulled her into our discussion about launching a local magazine exclusively about Roswell.

That year, she had been given the Lifetime Achievement www.30075life.com

Award for Tourism by then govorner of Georgia Nathan Deal. I wasn't any big wig, important Roswell person. I didn't know anybody of 'importance' here - I simply felt we needed our own magazine and I had the practical skills (writing, sales, design) to make it happen.

She had every reason to dismiss my enthusiasm for the project -- or at the minimum to delay her support until I had proven myself. Instead, she was gracious and generous with her time. She asked questions and listened. And she signed up as a sponsor of our inaugural issue!

Needless to say, I immediately liked her. I would have described her then as practical, down to earth, gracious and smart. Today, almost five years later, I would Issue #23 | @roswellmagazine

describe Dotty the same way: practical, down to earth, gracious and smart.

Why is this significant? Because it’s rare. In our modern ‘always connected’ world, we are ironically lacking in authentic connections with others. To be exactly who you are the first day you meet someone as five years (or 28 years) later is impressive.

I actually put this article off for last. It's a tough one to write. What can I say about someone who has been such a role model for me that hasn't already been said by others more eloquent than I? Dotty is the type of person I think about and say, "That's what I want to be when I grow up." #RB

“It had to be good for families.”

WHEN SEASONED RESTAURATEUR, Wild Slice Pizzeria’s owner Mike Thomas, moved his family from Nevada back to be with his wife Cristy’s extended family (in Roswell) he was intent on opening a restaurant that would serve as a community gathering spot. The restaurants he had operated up to that point had all became fixtures in their respective communities.

of his own, which has become the foundation and central focus of his life today. A ‘non-negotiable’ was the new place must be family-friendly, and he even set out to improve on the idea of a family restaurant. He knew first-hand how much work would have to go into running a successful food and beverage business, so it was imperative to him that his wife and children be welcomed and involved in his day-to-day.

ordeal. Between finding a place that has something on the menu to satisfy every palate and making sure it’s affordable as well, it can be tough to figure out where to go. We found Wild Slice strikes the perfect balance - enjoyable for both kids and adults.

They put the kids orders in right away so their pizza comes out fast. All items on the menu are available in kid sized portions at half the price. Kids eat free on Monday nights. The gaming area is in the back - out of the general flow of dining but in clear view of parents enjoying pre or post meal drinks. They offer free tokens for the arcade games and a “winner every time” claw machine. Staff seems genuinely amused by the little ones. We felt an authentic appreciation for families - they don’t just talk the talk. Additionally, on principle, Wild Slice is closed on Sundays, which can be a big sacrifice for a small business owner’s bottom line.

SERVICE Wild Slice Pizzeria’s second priority - and the reason we were first drawn to this family owned business to learn more - is their commitment to service. I’m not talking about customer service (that’s good, too!); rather, the ‘giving back’ kind of service - serving Roswell’s nonprofits and particularly schools as Mike’s wife Cristy is a Special Education teacher here in Roswell. Education and our youth holds a special place in their hearts with Wild Slice providing support with time, money and of course, pizza.

Pizza by the Slice Day,’ he created one! His infectious enthusiasm generated a national grassroots movement by enlisting other local and national pizzerias, food bloggers and vendors, declaring Wednesday, August 22, the National Pizza by the Slice Day. He took the opportunity of increased media attention by tying the day locally into raising money for the Drake House. Mike began to devote more time and resources to helping the folks at the Drake House and is now serving on their newly formed Young Professionals Advisory Council (YPAC).

Additionally Mike serves as the community member on the School Governance Council for Esther Jackson Elementary in Roswell. “As a business centered on family, we must serve the families of our community. We believe it is our obligation to create opportunities of awareness and fundraising whenever possible,” Mike says.

PIZZA! We almost forgot to mention the great pizza, which is served up with a sauce-to-cheese ratio that delivers as much as you need but not more than the structural integrity can handle; good-quality and creatively combined toppings and a flavorful, savory crust. The dough is house made daily using a baking technique called autolyse, which delivers dough with better texture, rise and flavor, along with a three-day cold proofing process to achieve the quality of crust he is looking for. The raw sauce is made up of quality tomato sauce with a special blend of herbs, spices, garlic and brown sugar.

Like many modern pizza makers, Wild Slice chose to go with a blend of cheeses - rather than straight mozzarella - to enhance both the flavor and the texture of every slice. They tested eight different types of blends, settling on one made of whole milk mozzarella, smoked provolone and an aged white cheddar.

Wild Slice’s signature pizzas are guests’ favorites, like the Wild Italian Meat Lover, Buffalo Chicken and a sweet and spicy Asian-style SrirachaYaki Chicken. We scrolled over many of the restaurant’s online reviews and found a common theme: everyone raved about the Potato Bacon pizza. In addition to vegetarian specialties like the Caprese Pie and Veggie Pesto, Wild Slice offers gluten free crust and bread as well as vegan cheese. In addition to pizza, patrons enjoy fresh salads, sandwiches, as well as simple catering solutions and online ordering.

Finally, the thing we loved about Mike Thomas and his pizzeria business is how - like us - he goes out of his way to support and lift up other local businesses, whether it be other local restaurants or shops and services. 5 Stars.

Roswell Restaurant Week returns to celebrate the city’s finest culinary experiences from January 24 to February 2, 2019. For the fifth consecutive year, the event will be presented by Roswell Inc, the economic and business development organization for the City of Roswell.

The Meaning of

CHURCH

Over a period of five months, members of Roswell Community Church (RCC) mobilized to build a permanent church in northeast Roswell. Since its establishment in 2006, RCC has always offered a fresh take on traditional worship. In the same spirit of innovation, the new home of RCC was demoed and reconstructed, largely by the churchgoers, to reduce the final cost. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and made significant contributions throughout the process, from fundraising to fruition.

At a fundamental level, the 250 members of RCC share an undeniable love for Roswell and a dedicated enthusiasm to their church community. Jaclyn McKinley has called Roswell her home since 1997, despite spending some time away at college.

Jaclyn has been a member of Roswell Church for a year and a half. She and her family were among the many volunteers who helped in the construction. Her husband tore up old carpets during demolition and together they painted some of the new offices. Jaclyn also helped prepare the children’s classrooms by installing whiteboards and organizing learning materials.

“My family knew right away that we wanted to be a part of the demolition and painting process because it is so fun to see a place transform from bones to a beautiful building,” Jaclyn said. “We love our church so much, so we wanted to serve and help as much as we were able to.”

Jaclyn feels blessed to have been a part of the process. And she made a point to acknowledge the sheer amount of thoughtfulness put into the building’s layout.

“You can tell that each detail was done with a purpose to make things run as best as they can,” Jaclyn said.

The new church is centrally-located, accessible to most of Roswell and Alpharetta. The idea was to make as many people in the community feel welcome as possible, which is much easier to accomplish from a permanent home. With the helping hands of its members, the new-and-improved church includes a 400seat worship space, spacious lobby and gathering place, meeting rooms, a children’s Sunday school wing and a rock-climbing wall.

Prior to construction, RCC worshipped at Hembree Springs Elementary School outside hours. Now, the church has plenty of room to gather, meet, plan, train and teach their members – both young and old.

Roswell Community Church held their first service in the new space on November 11, 2018, with many more to come. Located in the Mansell Commons shopping center, this new building is in close proximity to many local businesses.

“I hope we can get to know some of the people that work around there and have an opportunity to build relationships with them,” Jaclyn said. “I think that the new space will provide a lot of opportunities to host the community in a way that we may not have been able to when we were still using the school.”

Guests are invited to taste various soul foods and vote for their favorite entry in each category. Food categories include meat-based side dish, vegetarian side dish, breads/cornmeal, and desserts. Each participant may register for two food categories for just $10. This is a family-friendly event.

It’s ‘just’ a traffic citation...

How do we know if we need an attorney?

THE MOST COMMON QUESTION I AM ASKED BY THOSE CALLING MY OFFICE IS, “Do I need to hire an attorney?” I hear this question most often when a friend, family member or potential client has received a traffic citation. Most people assume that they can just pay the ticket and go on with their lives without any other repercussions. Unfortunately, traffic tickets are not always so simple.

In the state of Georgia, most traffic violations are considered misdemeanor criminal charges. As such, they are punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $1000 fine. Additionally, there can be collateral consequences such as license increased insurance premiums, license suspension and in some cases, jail time. If you accidentally forget to pay your citation before your court date you could face a bench warrant for your arrest as well as additional fines and suspensions.

Also in May of last year, The Max Gruver Foundation awarded Roswell student Jack Milani the first Max Gruver Scholarship which is given to a student who shares Max’s love for sports and journalism.

Before he formally became executive director on Jan. 1, we sat down with Andy Williams to find out who he is. As much affection as we have for (now retired) executive director Dotty Etris, we were a little skeptical to meet this person who will be taking her place, without our permission (lol). After about thirty seconds, it was clear to us the executive search team had made an excellent pick. The rapport between he and Dotty was authentic, trustworthy and conveyed a shared enthusiasm for what’s next; so much so that we couldn’t help but be swept up in their joint Roswell ‘pitch’ ourselves.

With so many great things on the horizon for Roswell, we found it fascinating to be able to observe the smooth changing of the guard first-hand. It appears to us this move is more of a ‘passing of the baton’ than a brand new start, as it feels as if Andy and his wife Ryan have been part of this community for years already.

That’s a testament to Roswell hospitality - unique in its own right - but also to Andy and Ryan’s authentic presentations and likability. They fit right in and are already calling Roswell home, while they house hunt for a place to plant their roots.

Ryan and Andy have two children, ages two years and three months, and are quite a team. We have already seen them out enjoying a date night at Monkey 68, Table & Main and Deep Roots Wine Market.

Background & Qualifications After graduating Georgia Southern University with a degree in Tourism and Commercial Recreation, Andy went to work as the Project Coordinator for the Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau. It was here he cut his teeth on hospitality marketing and tourism with a variety of a modern tourism professional’s responsibilities, including serving as the 'Camera Ready' liaison for the county to provide assistance in scouting film locations with production companies - resulting in the production of three major films. During his four (+) years with MCVB, his gift for leadership was evident early on, as he served as President of Morgan County Rotary Club from 2009 to 2010.

Next, Andy served as Director of Sales for the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Dunwoody, coordinating and implementing the business development efforts of the CVBD with a goal of increasing occupancy in the city's five hotels, resulting in an estimated $12.9 million economic impact within the city limits. It was then he was recognized as an industry leader in the faith-based sector publication Rejuvenate Magazine’s “40 Under 40” feature in the August/September 2012 issue and was also was awarded MPI - GA Chapter's Rising Star of the Year in 2013.

He expanded his tourism knowledge moving over to serve as Director of Sales & Business Development for Destination South Meetings & Events, a recognized leader within the Greater Atlanta hospitality community which provides innovative and transformative event experiences for clients worldwide. He spent four years with DSME growing and strengthening relationships with Atlanta-area hotel professionals and their strategic partners, and he widened his breadth of tourism leadership understanding by closely managing sales and budget processes. During his time with DSME, Andy was heavily involved with MPI - GA chapter, recognized as “Chapter Leader of the Year,” “Supplier Leader of the Year,” and served as chapter president. In 2018, Andy was recognized as one of “25 Young Event Pros to Watch in 2018” in the July issue of Special Events Magazine.

In downtown Greenville, South Carolina, the Peace Center for the Performing Arts has transformed a neglected six acre parcel on the wrong end of Main Street into a sparkling jewel.

The Peace Center has stimulated the development of thriving hotel and retail establishments, creating a walkable and livable destination from a once-blighted and under-used area.

Cities age. Sometimes they become blighted. Just like the furniture and decor in your home, cities can benefit from periodic repair, refreshing, and implementing bold revitalization plans.The Arts are a source of vibrancy and rebirth for weary cities. A new performing arts venue can enliven tired locations and help carry cities on the rise to the next level.

Here in Atlanta, the Woodruff Arts Center, a central place for the arts, was built to honor arts patrons who died in the 1962 Orly plane crash. Visionary leaders knew what the arts could do for the community. Since 1968, Woodruff has played a key role in making Atlanta a global center for culture, tourism, and inspiration.

Aurora Theatre opened modestly in 1996 in a converted hardware store. The City of Lawrenceville banked on the positive economic impact the arts have on a community, and, along with private leaders, expanded it in 2007 by transforming a 100-year-old church into a multi-million-dollar theatre. Aurora has become the cornerstone of revitalization in Lawrenceville. This year, a $26 million-dollar expansion was announced that could make this venue as famous as the Kennedy Center.

Sandy Springs, Mableton, Sugar Hill, Springfield, Thomasville, Hapeville. Each of these cities in our region have made a new performing arts venue the backbone of their renovation efforts. The arts attract a well-educated work force, a critical benefit and key incentive for new and relocating businesses.

Studies report that a Performing Arts venue increases the number of knowledge class employees and, consequently,

generates employment income. For example, the San Antonio Symphony generated $222 million in annual employment income. The final and most critical factor driving Amazon’s decision on where to build their new headquarters was access to talented knowledge class employees.

Using the arts as an economic development tool has found success across our country in rural and urban areas: Pittsburgh, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Denver, Chattanooga, Columbus - a list far too long for this column to complete.

Would Roswell benefit if it had a state of art, multi-use performing arts venue? The answer is, unequivocally, YES! On behalf of the City of Roswell, Roswell Arts Fund has completed a Performance Space Feasibility Study. The final results of the study will formally be reported in January 2019, and indicate a clear need for such a space, and an audience yearning for the opportunity to engage with the performing arts in new and exciting ways here in Roswell.

Imagine a performing arts venue in Roswell with the potential to complement our robust restaurant scene, increase tourism, embody our local pride, strengthen our brand, and activate our Modern Spirit. Southern Soul. According to the Americans for the Arts Economic Prosperity Calculator, and based on predicted operational and attendee expenditures, a new performing Arts Venue in Roswell could produce 108 new FTE jobs, $2.2 million household income, local government revenue of $144,000, and state government revenue of $200,000.

Cities across the country, small and large, in need of redo or update, realize that a vibrant arts scene creates social capital, spurs local economies, and strengthens an entire community.

We think Roswell should be one of those enlightened cities.

grub seems unassuming and first glance, but this place is way more than a neighborhood pub. The food is inventive and outstanding, the ambiance is warm and cozy (perfect for snuggly up with your sweetie), and there’s often live music and other fun events going on to keep you entertained between courses.

Table & Main Long held the mecca of restaurants on Canton Street, I’d be totally remiss if I left Table & Main off my list. Not only is the restaurant a cozy romantic Roswell classic, but the food never disappoints. Their bourbon cocktails are delish even if you’re not a bourbon drinker, and their burger and fried chicken have both won awards. Basically, you can’t go wrong.

Osteria Mattone If you can’t snag a table at Table & Main, try the owners' other spot on Canton Street: Osteria Mattone. Wood fired pizzas, fresh baked pastas, and an impeccable wine selection (half-priced bottles on Wednesdays, ya’ll) make this place a perfect date night spot.

The Whiskey Project If you’re a cocktail lover, this is THE spot in Roswell. The Whiskey Project serves the kind of cocktails that unless you’re a mixologist yourself, you have no idea what’s in them, but they’re delicious anyway! This place feels like you’re in a lounge in Brooklyn, and the food matches the elevated style.

Snag a seat at the bar and you’ll feel like you’ve stolen away to the city for the evening, right here in Roswell.

Osteria Mattone

Zest Sushi & Small Plates I am an unapologetic lover of small plates, so Zest is my kind of place. Known for sushi, but serving up all kinds of other Asian-American fusion goodies, this spot is perfect for sharing a big and a cocktail with your date. I highly recommend the lobster mac and cheese…need I say more?

1920 Tavern Tucked smack dab in the middle of Canton Street, 1920 is a perfect launching point for your journey through historic downtown Roswell. The food is an eclectic mix of Southern-inspired faire served up in an atmosphere that might have you thinking you’ve landed yourself in a brasserie in Paris. As a bonus my fave bartender in Roswell is now head of 1920’s beverage program, so I can promise you, cocktails will be unique and on point!

NOCA Eatery & Bar Nestled at the other end of Canton Street, NOCA serves and eclectic mix of date-night-worthy-faire in a spot that’s just off the beaten path enough to be a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of Canton Street.

Vin25 A super intimate atmosphere, an enviable variety of wine from every corner of the world, and inventive food to boot?

Yep, that’s Vin25 and it’s far and away one of my favorite spots on Canton Street. You HAVE to take a date with you because the two dessert options for Restaurant Week are so equally good, you have to get one of each to feel like your life is complete…trust me.

Houck’s Grille I know not everyone likes getting super gussied up for a dinner date, so if you’re looking for a place that walks the line between casual and upscale, Houck’s is the perfect place for you. A sports bar atmosphere complete with live music and TV’s at every turn, combined with the gourmet food you’d expect from a high end gastropub make Houck’s the best of both worlds.

Chipper's Club

Salt Factory Salt Factory is exactly the kind of place I want to go on date night. Cozy warm booths nestled among warm red brick and leather, classic cocktails coming from the industrial bar, and gourmet style pub food that hits the spot perfectly on cheat day! I highly recommend their steak frites (Hanger Steak on the Roswell Restaurant Week menu).

Chipper’s Club This is a brand new spot to the Roswell Restaurant scene, and I’m super excited about it. Chef Mike brings traditional southern faire with a New Orleans twist into modern cuisine and the results are delicious. And yes, there are beignets!

BistroVG If you want to feel like you’ve stepped out of the suburbs and into Southern California, or perhaps somewhere in Coastal France, Bistro VG is your ticket! The wood fired oven known for cranking out delicious flatbreads and their famous brown butter tarts keeps things cozy while you warm up to a plate of their famous poutine.

HOLA! Taqueria & Bar If margaritas are more your style, HOLA! is the place for you.

HOLA! serves up elevated Mexican faire in a contemporary atmosphere. HOLA! is also one of the restaurants offering an optional drink pairing as a part of their Restaurant Week menu, so give their Mango Chili Margarita a try while you’re at it!

Di Paolo Italian Kitchen If you want something truly special and unique, give Di Paolo a try. Located in East Roswell, this place is truly exceptional.

Serving up the kind of food that would make an Italian grandmother proud in a quiet, romantic setting, this spot is sure to check all the date night boxes.

Outing at TopGolf for the Young Professionals Advisory Council

THE DRAKE HOUSE PROVIDES A LIFELINE of supportive housing and enrichment programs for homeless single mothers and their children in north metro Atlanta. Their vision is to be an integral part of the community facilitating financial security and housing stability. As their journey began in 2006, with the help of North Fulton Community Charities, the agency has served more than 430 families and 800 children. The organization’s success and growth stems largely from its devoted yet talented staff, volunteers and donors, many of whom have been a part since its inception.

With the continued growth of the organization, so too became the need for more support. A Young Professionals Advisory Council (YPAC) was formed from the same leadership program the Drake House was born and created to speak to the millennial generation, which is known for its philanthropic tendancies.

The council of twenty young locals was chosen from a diverse selection of individuals across varied industries to help bring awareness more broadly out into the community.

The need for affordable housing and programming for the families who reside in the Drake House and the Drake Village is large. And to date, YPAC members have created focus committees, hosted outings for the teens and are planning its first full scale event in March.

On March 9th 2019, YPAC will be hosting the inaugural “Tappin’ Out Homelessness” fundraiser at Truck & Tap in Alpharetta with proceeds, $1 per pour (wine included), going to The Drake House all day long. In addition, the event will offer live music, raffles, great food and a wine pull for guests 21+.

3 large eggs • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/2 cup AP flour • 1/2 cup melted Irish butter • 1/2 teaspoon of Diamond Crystal kosher salt • 1 teaspoon of dark Madagascar vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon fresh squeezed lemon juice • 1 cup of light corn syrup • 3 cups of Large Lee County, GA pecans • 1/2 cup of 60% chocolate pistoles • 1 -9 inch pie crust • 80 | Restaurant Issue

Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat eggs and add liquid ingredients. Add rest of ingredients. Mix well and fold into Pie crust.

Lemon Olive Oil Cake Ingredients • 2 cups all-purpose flour •½ teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt • 3 eggs • 2 ¼ cup sugar + extra for pan • zest of 2 lemons • 1 ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 ½ cup milk

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 2. Spray 9” springform pan with cooking spray. Coat sides and bottom with sugar.

3. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

4. Whip eggs on medium speed in stand mixer using the whisk attachment until foamy.

5. Add sugar and lemon zest and whip on medium-high until pale yellow, about 3-4 minutes.

6. Still on medium-high, add olive oil in slow continuous stream. Mix for 1 minute more, until olive oil is well incorporated.

7. On low speed, add half of the flour mixture until combined. Scrape bowl 8. Add milk and mix. Add remaining flour until incorporated.

9. Pour into springform pan. Sprinkle top with sugar 10. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until tester inserted into middle of cake comes out with just a few crumbs attached.

11. Cool on wire rack for 15 minutes. Remove springform ring and cool completely.

Bourbon Street Bread Pudding Ingredients • 1 Dozen glazed donuts • 6 Large eggs • 1 Pint heavy cream • 1 Cup sugar • Powdered sugar • 1 Tablespoon vanilla flavoring • Bailey’s Irish Cream

Instructions 1. Mix donuts, eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla flavoring together 2. Spray 12 x 12 pan and pour in contents 3. Cover with Sugar 4. Bake 60 minutes at 375° 5. Mix Bailey’s Irish Cream with powdered sugar until it has a loose icing consistency.

6. Pour over warm pudding and enjoy!
