Best Kids Meals in Roswell! PEACH & THE PORKCHOP P&PC kids menu was created by kid for kids, and the chefs use the exact same, fresh, 100% all natural, farm-fresh food for kids that they do for adults. All meals come with choice of Fries, Side Salad or Caesar Salad, House Chips, Sautéed Haricot Verts, or Seasonal Fresh Fruit.
PUBLISHER’S POST What a fun issue to put together - I have fallen in love with photos of pregnant women! I seriously could have filled this whole issue of beautiful photos of confident mothers-to-be practicing yoga, eating well, going out to nice dinners... That’s probably a better theme for next May (Mother’s Day), though. Learn about some of Roswell’s small, locally owned businesses who serve and support moms-to-be and new moms on p18. A few short years later the kids are in preschool, so we introduce you to a new, state-of-the-art preschool whose staff strives to focus on the “whole” child. -- p42. There are so many things to do in Roswell for families, and we’ve got it all for you here. Attractions, scuba diving, cinemas, fitness, recreation, and much more. We even have a “kids eat free” list on p28 for you - try them all! Yes - it really is BACK TO SCHOOL time again. The silver lining is it’s a perfect excuse to get new clothes. I’ve become a huge fan of Plato’s Closet - behind Stoney River, in the same shopping center as Bellezza Salon at the intersection of Alpharetta Hwy and East Crossville. I found great quality, top brands, practically new clothes for teens and young adults (or, not so young as I picked up a few things for myself !) at the most affordable prices I have found in Roswell. This is the ideal place for back-to-school shopping. They don’t have small children’s clothes, but they have a huge selection of sizes in men and womens apparel, shoes and accessories! Enjoy these last few weeks of laid back days of summer in Roswell. Warm Regards,
Regina Barkley

9135 Willeo Rd, Roswell, GA 30075, www.chattnaturecenter.org ECO ZIPLINE CANOPY TOUR More than any other season, summers in the South call for time spent outdoors. The kids are out of school and eager to stay busy so, by all means, leave the house, get some sun and take advantage of all the activities Roswell has to offer. Without a doubt, the first destination on your family’s to-do list should be the Chattahoochee Nature Center. This summer, CNC is hosting a ton of outdoor activities and events for families. ROSWELL GYMNASTS PLACED 2nd IN 2019 JUNIOR OLYMPICS ROSWELL GYMNASTS Caroline Williams and Lauren Rutherford were awarded full scholarships and recently attended the 2019 Junior Olympic Nationals in Indianapolis, where they both placed second in the Nation on Floor in their respective age groups. Additionally, both athletes contributed to the success of their teams in Region 8 competitions, consisting of eight states. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and the leadership of coaches Lorenzo Wyatt, Karla Monterroso, JP Monterroso, Julia Yurkina and Olga Yurkina. Both Williams and Rutherford have maintained a 4.0 or higher grade-point average throughout their entire high school careers, balancing academics and athletics. “Gymnastics is a very demanding sport that requires a tremendous amount of training and dedication,” said Cindy Furman, Roswell Gymnastics Program Director. “Only 3 percent of athletes obtain this level, and we are most proud to have had both Caroline and Lauren, who have trained solely at Roswell for their entire career, reach this level of achievement.”
TOGETHER ROSWELL - Exciting city-wide collaborative initiative! THE CITY OF ROSWELL HAS begun an ambitious effort to develop a city-wide strategic plan to bridge any disconnect between Roswell residents and our city government. It’s an opportunity to collectively develop a vision for Roswell’s future. The plan will align all aspects of our community life and identify specific actions for Roswell to implement. Change is happening, and this is important, so let’s pause and ask ourselves important questions. This is a practical process involving important ideas with critical steps we must follow. This inclusive initiative requires community participation to accurately and positively influence Roswell’s true vision. There were three public meetings in June, and ‘pop-up’ events are happening at various local businesses who believe this is important. Or, participate easily online! www.togetherroswell.org.

2019 SUMMER SIPPIN’ 31 LY JU W NO MIMOSA HALL - OLDEST NET ZERO BUILDING IN U.S. THE CITY OF ROSWELL and Friends of Mimosa Hall are set to install a solar panel at historic Mimosa Hall originally used on the White House during Jimmy Carter’s presidency. On loan from Unity College, the installation will take place on Thursday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. The event is free for all ages and will mark the 40-year commemoration of the original installation on the White House in 1979. The solar panel itself will serve as a beacon of inspiration and symbolic marker of the progress, community and continued efforts in alternative energy. The new roof will feature credit-card-thin solar panels providing 100 percent of the building’s energy. After installation, Mimosa will be “The Oldest Net Zero Building in the United States,” enabling the property to generate as much energy as it consumes – saving the City of Roswell approximately $5,000 per year. The panels have been featured in The Smithsonian and The Carter Library here in Georgia, as well as the documentary, A Road Not Taken. The Friends of Mimosa Hall & Garden will host a viewing of the film on Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carter Library.

HEALTHY MOM. HEALTHY HOME.
Wellness For Two By Danielle Bartling There is nothing more beautiful or more wholesome than the journey of motherhood – a transition that begins with pregnancy and never quite ends. Since a mother's health correlates directly to that of her baby, it is vital to foster and maintain wellness during and after pregnancy. Three local businesses in Roswell offer conscientious pre- and postnatal programming to this end.
M
MERAKI MAMA COLLECTIVE Founder Lauren Shields moved to Atlanta in 2010 as a single mom. After remarrying and having two more children, she discovered her passion for guiding women through the birthing process. Lauren is now a certified birth and postpartum doula; a registered yoga, pilates and barre instructor; and a registered prenatal, postpartum and fertility yoga instructor.
18
Prime Phocus Photography
In September 2016, she founded Meraki Mama Collective (MMC) as a “one-woman show,” with the goal of creating a supportive and empowering space where women can gather to foster community and self-love. Initially, Lauren was making house calls, but soon she realized Meraki needed a space of its own. “I wanted to be a one-stop shop for health and wellness in the delicate time in a parent’s life,” Lauren says. “I wanted a space for mothers to be seen, held and supported physically, mentally and emotionally.”
www.30075life.com | issue 26
Lauren loved the “feel” of Roswell, and already had some clients in the area. She officially opened the studio on June 25, 2018 and offers an array of programs: pre and post-natal flow yoga, prenatal pilates, mat pilates and Meraki method barre. She says consistent practice yields “fast labors because it helps the baby to get into the optimal position for birth, opens the hips and teaches mindfulness techniques to cope with pain during labor.” For postpartum mothers, MMC offers in-studio lactation classes from Breastfeed Atlanta and pelvic floor physical therapy from Modern Mommy. Additionally, Lauren offers personal coaching services and MMC has an agency of doulas available to “hold space, inform and support families through birth and postpartum periods,” Lauren says. “Doulas can help reduce cesarean rates, improve satisfaction in birth experience and improve birth outcomes in babies.” 408 S Atlanta Street, Suite 155, Roswell, GA 30075 www.merakimamacollective.com

HARMONY CHIROPRACTIC
In addition to creating a new human life, pregnancy causes drastic changes to a woman's body. Often, the pain experienced during pregnancy can be remedied with proper adjustments. Dr. April is certified in the Webster technique, which promotes optimal positioning for breech and transverse babies. Dr. April is also passionate about postnatal care – particularly for the hips and spine – "to help bring everything back together so to speak," she says. "Moms need support and I love being able to offer that to our patients." 1241 Canton Street, Suite 100, Roswell, GA 30075 www.harmonyatlanta.com
K
Ten years ago, Dr. April Lundy opened Harmony Chiropractic out of an OBGYN office in Sandy Springs. In 2016, she opened her Canton Street location to set her business apart and work closer to home in Roswell. "I couldn't imagine opening a practice up anywhere else. I love how the local businesses go out of their way to support each other," Dr. April says. "My family loves Roswell and we are so grateful to be able to raise our kids in such a family-friendly and supportive community."
Dr. April believes chiropractic care can benefit everyone, including pregnant women, postpartum mothers – even babies! Most people are under the impression that chiropractic is a method of pain management, but she says that only "scratches the surface" of what they are trying to accomplish at Harmony. Chiropractic care helps the nervous system communicate with the rest of the body, which is essential to proper organ function. The team at Harmony Chiropractic works hard every day to keep patients at optimal functioning for the rest of their lives. While Dr. April treats everyone, she is also certified in pregnancy and postpartum-specific treatments. "It's always awesome to hear from pregnant moms who had breech babies that they've turned after adjustments," she said. Her favorite compliment from a patient was that her adjustment "felt like a sip of wine...but better!"
www.30075life.com | issue 26
Harmony Chiropractic offers in-house massage therapy (Gua Sha) by an experienced therapist with a medical background and is an expert at cupping, stretching and deep tissue work. " Ericka {massage therapist} loves working on our prenatal and postnatal moms to help them stay comfortable throughout their journeys," Dr. April says.
KORSI YOGA "I cannot imagine a better addition to an expectant mother's self care than yoga," says Rose Mary White, the prenatal instructor at Korsi Yoga in Roswell. Classes begin with a group discussion in a safe space where moms can introduce themselves and exchange stories, advice, due dates, genders and names of their babies. "Many moms stay in contact after their baby is born, and another layer of their experience is spent together." At Korsi, yoga is both physically and emotionally beneficial to pregnant women. "It teaches them to breathe and connect their movements to the inhales and exhales," Rose Mary says. In addition to building strength and stretching the hips, "conscious breathing techniques will carry over and complement the breathing moms will do in labor." "I thrive in the presence of strong women during one of the most exciting times of their lives," Rose Mary says. "When I lead them in a sequence and see their strength and determination, I can see a glimpse of the strong mother each will be. I feel grateful to share part of their pregnancy journey with them. They glow and they are beautiful – who wouldn't want to be with them?" Studies show when a man takes his pregnant wife out on dates (someplace nice), the baby will more likely be named after him. So let’s hop to it gentlemen!
It all starts here... Family dynamics, relationships, traditions, habits, everything... starts right here.
It’s not vanity - it’s common sense. Doing simple things which make us feel good on the outside improves the way we feel on the inside. And, right now her “inside” is pretty darn important, right? Start putting family-first from the very start.

From the Earth Brewing Company made the term ‘family-friendly’ mean something in Roswell.

Chances are, if you’ve been to Roswell, you have visited one of the three craft breweries. Fortunately, there’s one that is great for the whole family, including the dog! From the Earth Brewing Company (FTE) welcomes your little ‘half-pints’ by showing them the love while they’re there. They’ve created a ‘toys-provided’ spot where kids (and adults!) can play, while moms and dads enjoy quality craft beer or cocktails. Both children and adults can find something deliciously appealing for them on the menu. FTE quickly became the go-to spot for parents looking for a flavorful, quick and easy weeknight dinner option, right alongside business professionals looking for some downtime after work. Weekends are packed with post-game Little Leaguers and soccer teams before transitioning like clockwork in the evenings into a favorite date night spot. FTE loves live local music almost as much as they love beer, so diners find Thursday through Sunday evenings are
22
often enjoyed alongside great music and performances. Be sure to check their FB page or website for their current live music line-up! Almost immediately upon opening its doors in the Fall of 2017, FTE has been an important and much-appreciated addition to the eastside of Roswell. “We wanted a different location, a different vibe, somewhere we had room to grow,” said Owner Tim Stevens. “This area of Roswell really gave us that opportunity, as well as given us a great neighborhood to plant our feet.” FTE’s flagships, Goin’ Out West IPA and Golden Spiral Golden Ale, have become regional favorites and are some of their most requested craft brews . In addition, the brewhouse has produced a wide range of classic pub ales, lagers, and barrel-aged beers that keep bringing their regular customers back for more. www.30075life.com | issue 26

WHY GO? A place to take the family, including the young ones; solid craft beers, inventive cocktails and a food menu with something for every age. AND kids under 12 eat free on Tuesday nights throughout the summer (with the purchase of an entrée)
WHAT TO DRINK? Everything! But honestly, Goin’ Out West IPA and Golden Spiral Golden Ale are FTE’s longtime flagships; Bulls on Parade IPA with guava has also been a crowd pleaser this summer (collaboration brew with Steady Hand Brewing Co.). And we can’t forget Second Chances, another collaboration beer between From the Earth and Tap & Six with proceeds benefiting the Atlanta Humane Society.
WHAT TO EAT? A kid devouring mac and cheese or chicken strips is common at FTE; parents can pick from steaks to burgers to salmon and a veggie plates, among other entrees, but the FTE double-stack burger and fish and chips are perennial favorites. Also, the summer menu has recently debuted with incredible flavor and color, while focusing on quality and attention to local sourcing.

“We like to keep it creative,” said head brewer and manager Brian Lee. Lee recently took over after learning the ropes under Kevin McNearney, original co-owner of Sweetwater Brewing Company. “Seeing what’s popular, coming up with our own ideas - whether it’s a barrel-aged beer, or adding fruit shrubs to our sour beers, we like to push the edge on classic style beers.” On top of crowd-pleasing beers, FTE has made a name for itself in the food scene. Chef Jason Stern was recently tapped as Executive Chef, and strives on a daily basis to preserve the quality and integrity of fresh, local ingredients and to give guests a true taste of what FTE has to offer. FTE’s beers are distributed across Georgia through National Distributing Company and are available in sixtels (conveniently named since it’s 1/6 of a barrel of beer) and ½ barrel kegs. In addition, FTE has crowlers (32oz canned beers) for purchase at the brewpub for guests. FROM THE EARTH BREWING COMPANY 1570 Holcomb Bridge Rd | www.ftebrewing.com | 770.910.9799

Back to School
D
During summertime, the last thing on our minds is academics. But with a new school year comes the paradoxical pressure to "fit in" and "stand out." Now more than ever, kids and teens are encouraged to celebrate their differences and use fashion as a form of self-expression. Tons of youth-oriented labels have begun to offer a wider range of clothing to suit individual style identities, and since a new wardrobe is essential for a new school year – why not make a day of it and start shopping early? If your wallet quivers at the thought of paying full price for designer items, look no further than Plato's Closet of Roswell. On July 20, the owners will be throwing a “Back-to-School Brand Bash” where they will release tons of discounted, gently-used styles from brands such as Free People, Urban Outfitters, Victoria’s Secret PINK, Madewell and more. Check out their Instagram for more details (@platosclosetroswell). Owner Jessica Johnson moved from South Carolina five years ago to help her aunt manage a Plato’s location in Cumming. But Jessica and her fiancé had long sought to open a business of their own, so when the Roswell location went up for sale, it seemed like a perfect fit. The trendy couple already favored Plato’s eco-friendly business model – clothes upcycling – as well as the idea of working with young adults. They bought their Plato’s Closet franchise in January 2018 and keep their sights on expanding. “Our staff have worked so hard to make our new location beautiful and easy to shop," says Jessica. I love hearing how organized our store is and telling our employees what a great job they are
doing. We want to get more involved with the [Roswell] community, spreading the message to upcycle clothing and be inclusive of all sizes and styles." Plato’s is unique in that you can sell your outgrown and gently-used pieces for cash on the spot, which you can then use to shop for new clothes. They buy and sell gently-used clothing in teen girls' sizes zero to 30, and guys' 28 to 40-inch waists. Their inventory changes daily, so be sure to keep checking in! With an expansive collection of designer apparel as well as ontrend accessories, shopping for your own personal style at Plato's is like solving a puzzle – about yourself ! Browse the racks and you might even find something you didn't know you liked. Jessica enjoys providing the Roswell community with a fun place to shop that allows teens to find all the styles they want at prices they can afford – “especially during back-to-school when mom and dad are on a budget!” More Locally-owned

DID YOU KNOW THE TYPICAL US FAMILY spends at least $2,200 per year on energy bills? Stay comfortable this summer but make sure your wallet isn’t “overheating” from inefficient energy use. Here are our top five tips for your home: TURN UP THE THERMOSTAT This one may sound blatantly obvious but it’s definitely the simplest way to use less power. Turn the thermostat up as high as you can to still be comfortable, change the air filter regularly and learn how to program that smart thermostat. STAY SMART WITH APPLIANCES Keep the fridge doors shut and allow hot items to cool to room temperature before placing them inside. Use a microwave for reheating some dishes rather than the oven and enjoy grilling outdoors as much as possible. BLOCK OUT THE RAYS Keep curtains, blinds and shades closed and see if you can plant shrubs and trees on the south and west sides of your property to keep out heat from the summer sun. SOLAR POWER YOUR LAUNDRY Opt for an outdoor clothesline and use free energy from the sun! Run your dryer only at night, wash your clothes in cold water and be sure to clean the lint filter after every use. 90 percent of the energy used by your washing machine goes toward heating alone! SCALE BACK ON POOL FILTRATION If you have a pool, consider slowly reducing pool filtration time by 30-minute increments daily, as long as the water appears clean. You may not need to run the filter more than six hours a day. Install a timer to control the timing for the pump cycles. Implement these smart changes and cost-effectively manage the energy use in your home. www.30075life.com | issue 26

OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS, computing has grown from a few gadgets to an almost universal extension of human life. Yet while computing is now commonplace, the history of its innovation is being lost every day as "old" technology is discarded, recycled or consigned to a landfill. The Computer Museum of America was created to preserve this history and educate visitors on the past and future of computing, empowering the innovators of tomorrow. To preserve that history, the Computer Museum of America will host its official grand opening on Saturday, July 20 at the museum located at 5000 Commerce Parkway, Roswell, GA 30076. The event is open to the public (tickets $12-$15) and will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Anything that is in the collection, no matter how primitive, is magic," Lonnie Mimms, CEO of Mimms Enterprises, said. "We want the Computer Museum of America to be a center of inspiration for all generations to be encouraged to go out and do something great." Three exhibits will launch this month: A Tribute to Apollo 11 featuring a replica of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, Vanquishing the Impossible: a collection of super computers illustrating how these remarkable machines led to dramatic improvements in weather forecasting and national security, and the Historical Timeline exhibit that shows the advancements in information and data technology - from the early abacus and slide rule up to the ubiquitous "super computers" we call smart phones. With 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art event space connected to the Museum, the Computer Museum of America will also provide a unique environment in which to host corporate or social events, the largest conference and event space in all of Roswell. It’s beautiful. The exclusive caterer is Roswell’s Talk of the Town Catering and the space can be made work with any type of event or occasion. I was lucky enough to get a pre-opening tour of the Museum and found it so fascinating. Did you know the ‘race’ to get to the moon put in motion by JFK, is the thing that really sped up the development of technology and computing? The significance of this is not lost on those behind the CMOA who have devoted an entire exhibit to this history and are launching (pun intended) the grand opening of the Museum on July 20, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11’s first lunar landing. Very cool, right? RB

Mid-year
FAMILY FITNESS PROJECT
E
By Julian A. Amedee
EVERY YEAR IN JANUARY, IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST PEOPLE, you make your New Year’s resolutions. Generally, over 50% of these resolutions have something to do with fitness or health. You say you are going to lose weight, you are going to lower your cholesterol, or you are going to exercise on a regular basis, and throughout the month of January, you are gung-ho. In the beginning, every ounce of energy that you have is put into this ‘new you’. But by March, sometimes even February that enthusiasm fizzles. You start skipping workouts, going back to old habits, and making excuses for what you are doing. After a while your resolution is just a memory. This is one of the reasons that I don’t use the word “resolution” in the first place. If this sounds like you, I have an alternative for you: Implement a mid-year plan. Make it a family affair. Get everyone together and make a family project to get fit. One thing that I have learned is that when you put your kids on your case, they will stay on it. By making it a family project you add accountability to what you do.
Here are a few ways to incorporate family fitness into your home: • Schedule weekly, family exercise sessions • Create accountability partners. • Make a game out of it. • Pick teams and go after a goal. • Give prizes to winners! • Celebrate each achievement. • Have fun!
Julian A. Amedee Founder, Trainer Head Performance Coach SFX Fitness Extremes 770-587-2389 Cell: 770-315-5656 julian@sfxfitness.com
Now I am not going to say that this is a fool proof plan to keep you on track, but it will give you a better chance of following through. By making it a family project you give yourself the comfort of knowing you are not going at it alone. Making changes to your normal routine doesn’t adversely affect everyone else, since they are going through it with you. Lastly, it will give you reassurance that your children will have a positive attitude about fitness. Get your kids involved in your fitness and they will have a better awareness of their own. 33

FELLOWS Keeping The Tradition Of Green Street Alive

Photos and article by Frank Mack Food & Culture Columnist
FELLOWS IS AN ABSOLUTELY CHARMING NEW restaurant located on Green Street, just a smidge off Canton Street. It’s farm to fork freshness served with infectious smiles and plenty of fun. This represents pure old-fashioned Roswell in the form of an old house, which has been re-made and a bit of history that has been saved. Fellows is here and just like that, a new generation stakes a claim. Green Street is happening folks and this is just the start. At present, Green Street is almost just an alleyway between Canton Street and Alpharetta Street, but it connects some of the most valuable property Roswell has. With the soon to be redeveloped Southern Skillet location on one side and Canton Street restaurant row
34
on the other, this is a naturally walkable area. Green Street already holds a trio of fine restaurants in the form of Monkey 68, Vin 25, and now Fellows adding breakfast and lunch under the most beautiful oak tree in town. I’ve died and gone to heaven. When the two creative forces behind it joined up and found this space Roswell got lucky. The millennials have come and I for one can miss the old faithfuls like The Swallow at the Hollow and Greenwoods on Green Street, while being giddy ecstatic about the new. Welcome Fellows, I wish you well. The details that went into the building itself are remarkable. Antiquers will love all the re-use from countertops www.30075life.com | issue 26

to table legs. I personally love it when a building finds its perfect use and caring owners. A perfectly average restaurant would be nice in this location but Fellows is way past average. Just glance at the menu, it’s always the menu.
potatoes are a very nice savory twist and the bacon is real, thick and plentiful. It’s like a trick on your senses. This is a massively generous, non-fattening breakfast, with your greens slid in, that won’t skid your day into a food-induced coma.
When I can state: “Mmmmm, these are the best pancakes in town!” you know I’m onto something. And fresh? I recognized the local lady farmer hand delivering produce in her own car… On a Sunday… Need I say more?
Breakfast has changed and it has changed for the better. Begone the fried, greasy, batter heavy dishes of yesteryear. This is how I want to be served. I ask, what's wrong with eating well for breakfast? Why can’t I have chef quality before noon? And would it hurt if it's affordable?
Fellows is a slice of old-fashioned home cooking served with modern zest as farm-to-fork takes on a new meaning. They are inventive with a wide array of traditional breakfast items each with a unique twist as well as a full bar, high-end coffees, smoothies and homemade bread. I can’t quite figure who deserves the credit, as this seems to be a group effort, but credit to whoever, the menu rocks. The menu is highlighted by The Usual, which it ain’t at all. This dish is full of greens, fresh avocado, sourdough that bites back and delicoius eggs. The roasted sweet

It’s all great, every bite I’ve had has been perfect and I’ve been well served, by everyone. Nothing else to say, Roswell, we have scored another gorgeous breakfast place with a patio that needs to be found and frankly, it needs to be a legend. So please, come to Fellows, have yourself some coffee and watch Green Street grow. If you can walk here, y’all need to get in there. Whatever your mode of transport, it’ll be a great seat to watch Roswell grow from. You might even, someday, be able to see the parking deck from here.

National Pizza by the Slice Day
AUGUST
22
In 2018, Mike Thomas declared August 22 'National Pizza by the Slice' Day. As the local owner of his family-run
A
Wild Slice Pizzeria, he was surprised there wasn't already such a day.
A SLICK OF GREAT PIZZA IS ALWAYS worth celebrating and most who sell "by the slice" are local, independent pizzerias. They have a hard enough time competing with corporate pizza chains and their giant marketing budgets, so creating a day for the independents to take a "slice" out of the corporate competition was a challenge one family-owned Roswell business wanted to take on. Last year, Mike Thomas of Wild Slice Family Pizzeria, an independent family-friendly pizzeria in Roswell - known for serving up high-quality pizza by the slice - declared August 22 to be National Pizza by the Slice Day. To celebrate again like last year – when they gave out over 250 slices – Thomas will offer up free cheese slices throughout the day. Thomas was perplexed to learn that National Pizza by the Slice Day wasn’t already a thing. “As one of America’s most popular foods and with so many other food holidays already in existence, it was shocking this day didn’t already exist,” he says. “We felt compelled to start a grassroots campaign to put this holiday on the map and support the local independent pizzerias who sell by the slice. As a result, the plan to start National Pizza by the Slice Day was officially born in June 2018. There was immediate support and tremendous success from both industry professionals and pizza consumers alike. All agreed that bringing attention to the independents was a great

way to support local business. “In addition, we were lucky enough to have my friend Frank Pinello ( from Best Pizza Williamsburg and host of The Pizza Show on Vice Network) get behind the campaign and lend his support to help spread the word, including participating in the holiday himself. That helped the industry jump on board.” “We are looking forward to growing the awareness and expanding the participation of this new food holiday this year,” says Thomas. He perceives it as an opportunity to share some good with the community by partnering with a local charity, The Drake House, where Mike currently serves on the Y.P.A.C. (Young Professionals Advisory Council). “As a business centered on family, it is our purpose to serve the families of our community, and as a member of the Y.P.A.C. board, it is our obligation to create opportunities of awareness and fundraising for the amazing work The Drake House does for women and children. This seemed like an obvious opportunity,” says Thomas. On National Pizza by the Slice Day, the Drake House will be on site at Wild Slice to accept donations. Each contribution of $10 or more will be entered into a drawing to win free pizza for a year from Wild Slice. 580 E. Crossville Rd. Suite 420, Roswell, GA 30075 www.wildslicepizzeria.com 37

BUILDING KIDZ OF ROSWELL
Developing the "Whole" Child
C
Confidence. Commitment. Character. This is the core philosophy of Building Kidz School. The franchise opened a newly-renovated, 12,000-square-foot facility in Roswell last February – offering preschool, infant, toddler and pre-kindergarten programs. Their mission is to create a community where children are challenged intellectually and instilled with a lifelong love of learning. They serve to educate and empower more than 175 children in the Roswell community, particularly in the performing arts (dance, music and theater). According to research, Building Kidz says, “Children exposed to the performing arts during early childhood develop neurological connections that support analytical thinking capabilities as adults.”
Each May and December, the children will perform recitals after months of rehearsing with consistency, commitment and teamwork. The opportunity to perform on stage in front of their families inspires a “tremendous amount of confidence” in these young learners.
Owner and franchisee Chris Rodgers is a local entrepreneur with a passion for investing and growing new businesses. In 2017, he and his wife, Jamie, began their Building Kidz journey and are excited to someday "watch [their own children] learn and grow on a daily basis" at their Roswell location.
By enrolling your child in the program, you will be making a difference that spans beyond your own family. Building Kidz Worldwide donates 25 percent of their profits to Building Futures Worldwide – a nonprofit partner serving to provide free education, medical care, clothing, food and arts programming to underprivileged children. “If you are looking for an engaging community environment where your child can grow to love learning, please connect with us and see how our preschool in Roswell can meet your needs.” www. buildingkidzschool.com/roswell 11516 Woodstock Rd., Roswell, GA 30075
Daily art, music and reading activities support their mission while enhancing motor skill development and academic curriculum. “We are looking to develop the whole child through the use of performing arts,” says Director Heather Oaks. “We will work on academics and we’ll have reading, science, math and Spanish in our curriculum.” Building Kidz was founded on the idea you cannot teach young children without also teaching social skills. “They have to learn to share and how to speak to adults, and I feel like the fine arts is a great way to do that.” The preschool’s campus is equipped with ten classrooms (as well as a dedicated performing arts room), nature trails, a turf sports field, outdoor stage and classroom, gardening area and age appropriate playground equipment – plus a complimentary coffee bar for parents!
Building Kidz’ community director Kelly Henderson says she’s very excited for the school to be in the Roswell community. “The community aspect the school is built around is that we will foster a lot of love into the kids and families that come here as well as our staff.” The campus is centrally-located on Woodstock Road, behind the Wells Fargo on Highway 92.

The Arts
ArtAround Roswell
R
ROSWELL ARTS FUND, WHICH produces ArtAround Roswell, is thrilled to install nine temporary works of art to join our ten permanent sculptures that make your walk, bike ride, and commute more pleasurable and provocative. If you are seeking a fun and educational activity to do with the children, ArtAround Roswell offers you many opportunities to make visiting the sculptures a meaningful experience for adults and children alike. Every sculpture tells a story. Begin is by asking your children what they think the sculpture is about. There are no wrong answers. Art is subjective at every age. Let’s say you are at Mill Park and see Tangled, Fred Ajanogha, sponsored by Randall Paulson Architects. Maybe your kids think this is a fish. Turn on your OTOCAST app (downloadable map at www.roswellartsfund. org)and listen to what Fred has to say about why he created Tangled. His story will open the door for you to talk to your children about water, fish, birds, and foliage and how our planet is an undeniably diverse tapestry of both nature and people. Maybe you are at the playground at Riverside Park. Just a few steps away is Lost Horizon, Mike Wsol, sponsored by Carl Black GMC Buick. A child can’t resist crawling inside, standing in this small but open space. Ask them what they think this is, and then turn on OTOCAST and learn that the artist created this sculpture trying to recreate the landscapes of his childhood in Illinois, his sense of smallness compared to the acreage around him, something he missed after moving to Georgia. An opportunity to talk about how it is okay to miss someplace or someone. So many of the sculptures evoke memories of good

times. Celebration,Cecilia Lueza, at Riverside Park East, sponsored by Synovus is a time to enjoy the color and joy of life. When you get home, you can encourage your child to think of one of their own special memories and how they might create a painting, drawing, claywork, dance or song to reflect that memory. Hole in My Heart, Ben Pierce at East Roswell Park, sponsored by LMC, can spark a conversation about love and loss. Children can relate to their feelings of love and sadness. It can be a reflective, comforting moment. Abstract sculptures like Portal Majestic, Nathan Pierce, installed in front of and sponsored by Variant Brewing, and Emergence, Deanna Hoffman at City Hall, sponsored by Staff Zone and Hill Climb, Jim Collins, at Big Creek Park, sponsored by Pieper O’Brien Herr prompts you to touch, enter, imagine, and question. Can I touch the top? Can I squeeze between? Where are the cyclists going? All the sculptures make for great photo ops. Looking small beneath the largess of Exploratory Unit 01, by Harry McDaniel, at Roswell Area Lake Park, sponsored by Turner Construction Company, or wondering where Wild Bird, Diane Shepherd, sponsored by ALDI at Don White Park is soaring. Kids can create new captions for their photos, as well as draw their own pictures You can brainstorm what they would have named that sculpture if they were the artist. Visiting outdoor sculpture allows you to introduce your children to fine art, a museum without walls and tickets. So plan that visit, activate the art in a way that’s appropriate for your child and you both may leave the experience inspired. www.30075life.com | issue 26
Local Marketing - Small Business
Playing the Long Game By Natasha Cary
Marketing is most successful when you give it time and patience.
Y
YOU JUST SPENT A LOT OF TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY on your marketing. You have a website, your social media is up and getting noticed, you’ve started to be consistent with a monthly email to your customers, and you even have professional collateral. You are feeling pretty good about the foundation you have set up and your product is so amazing people will be knocking your door down to get it. With everything in place people will start noticing you and they will buy from you. Marketing did its job and now sales will start rolling in. Right? That’s how it works? I’ve heard clients say, where are the sales? Look at the money time and effort we have put into our marketing? Why are the sales not rolling in? Well, a few things could be happening here. Let’s start with the three below: 1. MARKETING IS A LONG GAME. Generally speaking, marketing is not something that you can work on and show immediate results. Be patient and know there really is no magic pill that is going to make things happen overnight. If you are trying to lose weight, you build a plan, develop better eating habits, and fit in exercise to your daily routine. You put those plans into action and give them time. Same goes for your marketing efforts. Build a realistic plan that can be measured and track your results. Which brings me to point #2. 2. LOOK AT THE DATA. There are many tools to analyze your marketing efforts. Do you have google analytics and/or a Face-
www.30075life.com | issue 26
book pixel on your website? Are you measuring how people are engaging with your marketing? You worked hard on your marketing planning and efforts, so make sure you have everything set up to track those efforts. When you built the plan it was off of some assumptions, some history and your knowledge. Tracking your efforts lets you know if you are on the right path. 3. ADJUST YOUR PLAN. Your data is a gift. Most people don’t even look at the information that is right at their fingertips. Now that you have been tracking all your efforts, analyze the data and make changes, rinse and repeat. This is why you need to have patience. They say knowledge is power, but it’s what you do with the knowledge that is really powerful. Not everything you planned is going to work. That’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up. Figure out what changes need to be made and make them. Bottom line, marketing is something you have to nurture. It is a critical ingredient for the success of your business. You have to make time for it, schedule it and work on it consistently. Make sure your goals and plans are realistic. Tracking your data gives you history and information to build better plans for the future. Every business has a story to tell, give it a chance to find its voice and help it soar.
