PUBLISHER’S POST What a fun issue to put together - I have fallen in love with photos of pregnant women! I seriously could have filled this whole issue of beautiful photos of confident mothers-to-be practicing yoga, eating well, going out to nice dinners... That’s probably a better theme for next May (Mother’s Day), though. Learn about some of Roswell’s small, locally owned businesses who serve and support moms-to-be and new moms on p18. A few short years later the kids are in preschool, so we introduce you to a new, state-of-the-art preschool whose staff strives to focus on the “whole” child. -- p42. There are so many things to do in Roswell for families, and we’ve got it all for you here. Attractions, scuba diving, cinemas, fitness, recreation, and much more. We even have a “kids eat free” list on p28 for you - try them all! Yes - it really is BACK TO SCHOOL time again. The silver lining is it’s a perfect excuse to get new clothes. I’ve become a huge fan of Plato’s Closet - behind Stoney River, in the same shopping center as Bellezza Salon at the intersection of Alpharetta Hwy and East Crossville. I found great quality, top brands, practically new clothes for teens and young adults (or, not so young as I picked up a few things for myself !) at the most affordable prices I have found in Roswell. This is the ideal place for back-to-school shopping. They don’t have small children’s clothes, but they have a huge selection of sizes in men and womens apparel, shoes and accessories! Bring your towel and an inner tube (optional). Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to sign a waiver. Free parking is available onsite. SPRAYGROUND PAVILIONS While you're at it, you might as well keep the kids splashing, laughing and cool all summer. Pay a visit to one of Roswell’s popular spraygrounds, or "spray-playgrounds." Roswell offers not one, but two fun-sized pool parks for you to enjoy gallons of family fun – the Riverside Park Splash-n-Play and the Spray Station at East Roswell Park. Both spraygrounds offer different varieties of spray features, concession stands and rental pavilions. Daily fees apply, or you can purchase a Sprayground Pass good for one or both spraygrounds. Roswell Area Park Pool pass holders can add the spraygrounds to the pass. Children under the age of 1 and adults not entering the water (with

paid child) get in free. Admission at both parks is $2 for everyone above age one. Please keep in mind that children under 3 years old are required to wear a swim diaper. The kids are out of school and eager to stay busy so, by all means, leave the house, get some sun and take advantage of all the activities Roswell has to offer. Without a doubt, the first destination on your family’s to-do list should be the Chattahoochee Nature Center. This summer, CNC is hosting a ton of outdoor activities and events for families. They've partnered with American Adventure Park Systems and Historic Banning Mills to create the Eco Zipline Canopy Tour and Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventure Course. Zip through the trees and reach heights up to 55 feet in the air. With quick trekker continuous belay systems on seven ziplines, this offers a chance to explore the Nature Center landscape safely from a bird’s eye view. Zipliners must be at least eight years old and weigh no less than 60 pounds to fly.

BUTTERFLY ENCOUNTER CNC is also hosting an interactive butterfly encounter – free with general admission, daily until 6:30pm through the end of July. ROSWELL GYMNASTS PLACED 2nd IN 2019 JUNIOR OLYMPICS ROSWELL GYMNASTS Caroline Williams and Lauren Rutherford were awarded full scholarships and recently attended the 2019 Junior Olympic Nationals in Indianapolis, where they both placed second in the Nation on Floor in their respective age groups. Additionally, both athletes contributed to the success of their teams in Region 8 competitions, consisting of eight states. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and the leadership of coaches Lorenzo Wyatt, Karla Monterroso, JP Monterroso, Julia Yurkina and Olga Yurkina. Both Williams and Rutherford have maintained a 4.0 or higher grade-point average throughout their entire high school careers, balancing academics and athletics. “Gymnastics is a very demanding sport that requires a tremendous amount of training and dedication,” said Cindy Furman, Roswell Gymnastics Program Director. “Only 3 percent of athletes obtain this level, and we are most proud to have had both Caroline and Lauren, who have trained solely at Roswell for their entire career, reach this level of achievement.”

TOGETHER ROSWELL - Exciting city-wide collaborative initiative! THE CITY OF ROSWELL HAS begun an ambitious effort to develop a city-wide strategic plan to bridge any disconnect between Roswell residents and our city government. It’s an opportunity to collectively develop a vision for Roswell’s future. The plan will align all aspects of our community life and identify specific actions for Roswell to implement. Change is happening, and this is important, so let’s pause and ask ourselves important questions. This is a practical process involving important ideas with critical steps we must follow. This inclusive initiative requires community participation to accurately and positively influence Roswell’s true vision. ROTARY CLUB’S ANNUAL CHARITY TOURNAMENT! THE ROTARY CLUB OF ROSWELL will host its 2019 golf & tennis charity tournaments at Country Club of Roswell, Monday, September 9th, 2019: the 41st annual Aubrey Greenway Golf Tournament and the 7th Annual Hagan Cup Classic Tennis Tournament. This is the primary fundraiser for the organization involving close to 500 players and volunteers in this one day event. There are morning and afternoon sessions of golf and tennis, lunch, a ball drop contest, dinner, after party, and silent/live auctions. 2019 SUMMER SIPPIN’ 31 LY JU W NO MIMOSA HALL - OLDEST NET ZERO BUILDING IN U.S. THE CITY OF ROSWELL and Friends of Mimosa Hall are set to install a solar panel at historic Mimosa Hall originally used on the White House during Jimmy Carter’s presidency. On loan from Unity College, the installation will take place on Thursday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. The event is free for all ages and will mark the 40-year commemoration of the original installation on the White House in 1979. The solar panel itself will serve as a beacon of inspiration and symbolic marker of the progress, community and continued efforts in alternative energy. The new roof will feature credit-card-thin solar panels providing 100 percent of the building’s energy. After installation, Mimosa will be “The Oldest Net Zero Building in the United States,” enabling the property to generate as much energy as it consumes – saving the City of Roswell approximately $5,000 per year. The panels have been featured in The Smithsonian and The Carter Library here in Georgia, as well as the documentary, A Road Not Taken. The Friends of Mimosa Hall & Garden will host a viewing of the film on Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carter Library.

After remarrying and having two more children, she discovered her passion for guiding women through the birthing process. Lauren is now a certified birth and postpartum doula; a registered yoga, pilates and barre instructor; and a registered prenatal, postpartum and fertility yoga instructor.

In September 2016, she founded Meraki Mama Collective (MMC) as a “one-woman show,” with the goal of creating a supportive and empowering space where women can gather to foster community and self-love. Initially, Lauren was making house calls, but soon she realized Meraki needed a space of its own. “I wanted to be a one-stop shop for health and wellness in the delicate time in a parent’s life,” Lauren says. “I wanted a space for mothers to be seen, held and supported physically, mentally and emotionally.”

Lauren loved the “feel” of Roswell, and already had some clients in the area. She officially opened the studio on June 25, 2018 and offers an array of programs: pre and post-natal flow yoga, prenatal pilates, mat pilates and Meraki method barre. She says consistent practice yields “fast labors because it helps the baby to get into the optimal position for birth, opens the hips and teaches mindfulness techniques to cope with pain during labor.” For postpartum mothers, MMC offers in-studio lactation classes from Breastfeed Atlanta and pelvic floor physical therapy from Modern Mommy. “We like to keep it creative,” said head brewer and manager Brian Lee. Lee recently took over after learning the ropes under Kevin McNearney, original co-owner of Sweetwater Brewing Company. “Seeing what’s popular, coming up with our own ideas - whether it’s a barrel-aged beer, or adding fruit shrubs to our sour beers, we like to push the edge on classic style beers.” On top of crowd-pleasing beers, FTE has made a name for itself in the food scene. OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS, computing has grown from a few gadgets to an almost universal extension of human life. Yet while computing is now commonplace, the history of its innovation is being lost every day as "old" technology is discarded, recycled or consigned to a landfill. The Computer Museum of America was created to preserve this history and educate visitors on the past and future of computing, empowering the innovators of tomorrow. To preserve that history, the Computer Museum of America will host its official grand opening on Saturday, July 20 at the museum located at 5000 Commerce Parkway, Roswell, GA 30076. The event is open to the public (tickets $12-$15) and will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Anything that is in the collection, no matter how primitive, is magic," Lonnie Mimms, CEO of Mimms Enterprises, said. "We want the Computer Museum of America to be a center of inspiration for all generations to be encouraged to go out and do something great." Three exhibits will launch this month: A Tribute to Apollo 11 featuring a replica of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, Vanquishing the Impossible: a collection of super computers illustrating how these remarkable machines led to dramatic improvements in weather forecasting and national security, and the Historical Timeline exhibit that shows the advancements in information and data technology - from the early abacus and slide rule up to the ubiquitous "super computers" we call smart phones. With 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art event space connected to the Museum, the Computer Museum of America will also provide a unique environment in which to host corporate or social events, the largest conference and event space in all of Roswell. It’s beautiful. The exclusive caterer is Roswell’s Talk of the Town Catering and the space can be made work with any type of event or occasion. I was lucky enough to get a pre-opening tour of the Museum and found it so fascinating. Did you know the ‘race’ to get to the moon put in motion by JFK, is the thing that really sped up the development of technology and computing? The significance of this is not lost on those behind the CMOA who have devoted an entire exhibit to this history and are launching (pun intended) the grand opening of the Museum on July 20, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11’s first lunar landing. EVERY YEAR IN JANUARY, IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST PEOPLE, you make your New Year’s resolutions. Generally, over 50% of these resolutions have something to do with fitness or health. You say you are going to lose weight, you are going to lower your cholesterol, or you are going to exercise on a regular basis, and throughout the month of January, you are gung-ho. In the beginning, every ounce of energy that you have is put into this ‘new you’. But by March, sometimes even February that enthusiasm fizzles. You start skipping workouts, going back to old habits, and making excuses for what you are doing. After a while your resolution is just a memory. This is one of the reasons that I don’t use the word “resolution” in the first place. If this sounds like you, I have an alternative for you: Implement a mid-year plan. Make it a family affair. Get everyone together and make a family project to get fit. One thing that I have learned is that when you put your kids on your case, they will stay on it. By making it a family project you add accountability to what you do.

Here are a few ways to incorporate family fitness into your home: • Schedule weekly, family exercise sessions • Create accountability partners. • Make a game out of it. • Pick teams and go after a goal. • Give prizes to winners! • Celebrate each achievement. • Have fun!

FELLOWS IS AN ABSOLUTELY CHARMING NEW restaurant located on Green Street, just a smidge off Canton Street. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm to fork freshness served with infectious smiles and plenty of fun. This represents pure old-fashioned Roswell in the form of an old house, which has been re-made and a bit of history that has been saved. Fellows is here and just like that, a new generation stakes a claim. Green Street is happening folks and this is just the start. At present, Green Street is almost just an alleyway between Canton Street and Alpharetta Street, but it connects some of the most valuable property Roswell has. With the soon to be redeveloped Southern Skillet location on one side and Canton Street restaurant row

on the other, this is a naturally walkable area. Green Street already holds a trio of fine restaurants in the form of Monkey 68, Vin 25, and now Fellows adding breakfast and lunch under the most beautiful oak tree in town. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve died and gone to heaven. When the two creative forces behind it joined up and found this space Roswell got lucky. The millennials have come and I for one can miss the old faithfuls like The Swallow at the Hollow and Greenwoods on Green Street, while being giddy ecstatic about the new. potatoes are a very nice savory twist and the bacon is real, thick and plentiful. It’s like a trick on your senses. This is a massively generous, non-fattening breakfast, with your greens slid in, that won’t skid your day into a food-induced coma.

When I can state: “Mmmmm, these are the best pancakes in town!” you know I’m onto something. And fresh? I recognized the local lady farmer hand delivering produce in her own car… On a Sunday… Need I say more?

Breakfast has changed and it has changed for the better. Begone the fried, greasy, batter heavy dishes of yesteryear. This is how I want to be served. I ask, what's wrong with eating well for breakfast? Why can’t I have chef quality before noon? And would it hurt if it's affordable?

Fellows is a slice of old-fashioned home cooking served with modern zest as farm-to-fork takes on a new meaning. They are inventive with a wide array of traditional breakfast items each with a unique twist as well as a full bar, high-end coffees, smoothies and homemade bread. I can’t quite figure who deserves the credit, as this seems to be a group effort, but credit to whoever, the menu rocks. The menu is highlighted by The Usual, which it ain’t at all. This dish is full of greens, fresh avocado, sourdough that bites back and delicoius eggs. The roasted sweet

It’s all great, every bite I’ve had has been perfect and I’ve been well served, by everyone. Nothing else to say, Roswell, we have scored another gorgeous breakfast place with a patio that needs to be found and frankly, it needs to be a legend. So please, come to Fellows, have yourself some coffee and watch Green Street grow. If you can walk here, y’all need to get in there. National Pizza by the Slice Day

In 2018, Mike Thomas declared August 22 'National Pizza by the Slice' Day. As the local owner of his family-run

Wild Slice Pizzeria, he was surprised there wasn't already such a day.

A SLICK OF GREAT PIZZA IS ALWAYS worth celebrating and most who sell "by the slice" are local, independent pizzerias. They have a hard enough time competing with corporate pizza chains and their giant marketing budgets, so creating a day for the independents to take a "slice" out of the corporate competition was a challenge one family-owned Roswell business wanted to take on. Last year, Mike Thomas of Wild Slice Family Pizzeria, an independent family-friendly pizzeria in Roswell - known for serving up high-quality pizza by the slice - declared August 22 to be National Pizza by the Slice Day. To celebrate again like last year – when they gave out over 250 slices – Thomas will offer up free cheese slices throughout the day. Thomas was perplexed to learn that National Pizza by the Slice Day wasn’t already a thing. “As one of America’s most popular foods and with so many other food holidays already in existence, it was shocking this day didn’t already exist,” he says. “We felt compelled to start a grassroots campaign to put this holiday on the map and support the local independent pizzerias who sell by the slice. As a result, the plan to start National Pizza by the Slice Day was officially born in June 2018. There was immediate support and tremendous success from both industry professionals and pizza consumers alike. All agreed that bringing attention to the independents was a great

way to support local business. “In addition, we were lucky enough to have my friend Frank Pinello ( from Best Pizza Williamsburg and host of The Pizza Show on Vice Network) get behind the campaign and lend his support to help spread the word, including participating in the holiday himself. That helped the industry jump on board.” “We are looking forward to growing the awareness and expanding the participation of this new food holiday this year,” says Thomas. He perceives it as an opportunity to share some good with the community by partnering with a local charity, The Drake House, where Mike currently serves on the Y.P.A.C. (Young Professionals Advisory Council). “As a business centered on family, it is our purpose to serve the families of our community, and as a member of the Y.P.A.C. board, it is our obligation to create opportunities of awareness and fundraising for the amazing work The Drake House does for women and children. This seemed like an obvious opportunity,” says Thomas. On National Pizza by the Slice Day, the Drake House will be on site at Wild Slice to accept donations. Developing the "Whole" Child

The franchise opened a newly-renovated, 12,000-square-foot facility in Roswell last February – offering preschool, infant, toddler and pre-kindergarten programs. North Fulton Community Charities Annual Backpack Program

NORTH FULTON COMMUNITY Charities (NFCC) is collecting new backpacks and school supplies for their annual Back to School program presented by Northside Hospital. The program serves local families in need. Last year, NFCC distributed over 900 donated backpacks filled with school supplies to children in North Fulton. “The Back to School Program is helps families living paycheck to paycheck who don’t have the extra money to spend on

Marketing is most successful when you give it time and patience.

YOU JUST SPENT A LOT OF TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY on your marketing. You have a website, your social media is up and getting noticed, you’ve started to be consistent with a monthly email to your customers, and you even have professional collateral. You are feeling pretty good about the foundation you have set up and your product is so amazing people will be knocking your door down to get it. With everything in place people will start noticing you and they will buy from you. Marketing did its job and now sales will start rolling in. Right? That’s how it works? I’ve heard clients say, where are the sales? Look at the money time and effort we have put into our marketing? Why are the sales not rolling in? Well, a few things could be happening here. Let’s start with the three below: 1. MARKETING IS A LONG GAME. Generally speaking, marketing is not something that you can work on and show immediate results. Be patient and know there really is no magic pill that is going to make things happen overnight. If you are trying to lose weight, you build a plan, develop better eating habits, and fit in exercise to your daily routine. You put those plans into action and give them time. Same goes for your marketing efforts. Build a realistic plan that can be measured and track your results. Which brings me to point #2. 2. LOOK AT THE DATA. There are many tools to analyze your marketing efforts. Do you have google analytics and/or a Face-

book pixel on your website? Are you measuring how people are engaging with your marketing? You worked hard on your marketing planning and efforts, so make sure you have everything set up to track those efforts. When you built the plan it was off of some assumptions, some history and your knowledge. Tracking your efforts lets you know if you are on the right path. 3. ADJUST YOUR PLAN. Your data is a gift. Most people don’t even look at the information that is right at their fingertips. Now that you have been tracking all your efforts, analyze the data and make changes, rinse and repeat. This is why you need to have patience. They say knowledge is power, but it’s what you do with the knowledge that is really powerful. Not everything you planned is going to work. That’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up. Figure out what changes need to be made and make them. Bottom line, marketing is something you have to nurture. It is a critical ingredient for the success of your business. You have to make time for it, schedule it and work on it consistently. Make sure your goals and plans are realistic. Tracking your data gives you history and information to build better plans for the future. Every business has a story to tell, give it a chance to find its voice and help it soar.
