JULY AND AUGUST IN ROSWELL BRINGS CONTINUED SUMMER FUN plus music, rafting & canoeing, shopping, festivals, butterflies, cooking classes and of course, food. Night Life rocks into high gear when the weather warms. One of the highlights of the summer which kicked off in May is the Riverside Sounds concert series at Riverside Park. We give you the performance line-up on page 16. It seems we can’t put together an issue of Roswell Magazine without spending a lot of time talking about restaurants and fabulous food. This issue is no exception. Jennifer Mehall writes a piece for us about the state of the farm-to-table dining trend locally (p36). Also, stop by the Roswell Farmers and Artisan Markets every Saturday through mid-October (p8). Want to learn to cook your own delicious meals? Barrington Hall hosts cooking classes through September (p.38) Don’t blink! It’ll be back-to-school before we know it. THE STATED MISSION of the Roswell Farmers &

Artisan Market is: to be an advocate in building community around a local and sustainable food economy. Their objectives are: •to provide a marketplace where citizens can purchase fresh, local farm, ranch and artisan foods direct from the producer. •to promote healthy, sustainable lifestyles through educational workshops. •to encourage entrepreneurship by providing a central place of commerce, retail guidelines, marketing assistance and training. •to encourage relationships within and surrounding the local food economy . A Bit of Market History Originally conceived in 2007 in a joint venture between Roswell Recreation and Parks and Fulton County, the market started with just 8 vendors. From the start, the market was called the “Riverside Farmers Market”, named so because the first location was a dirt parking area in Roswell’s Riverside Park. Excitement always followed the ritual ringing of the cowbell signifying the start of the market. In response to feedback from Roswell citizens and founding vendors a number of changes were made. A volunteer organization was formed (RFAMA) to increase local participation in the market, the City of Roswell became the our primary partner, the name was changed to the Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market, the market season was extended by six weeks, and the venue was moved to an area shaded by majestic oaks behind City Hall.

After a very successful 2014 season, RFAMA broadened the all-volunteer Board, elected Woolery Back as President, brought in Tricia Nitti as Market Manager, and set out with a new vision for growing community around local, sustainable foods. Tricia led the market to a new high as the center of community activity joining the Azalea Festival, bringing in grants from Chipotle, Farmers Market Coalition and others. GET OUT ON THE WATER AND EXPERIENCE CHATTAHOOCHEE NATURE CENTER’S CANOE PROGRAMS RIVER CANOE TRIPS The Chattahoochee River is calling – Take an urban adventure and experience wildlife through a 2 ½ hour paddle down the ‘Hooch. The Chattahoochee Nature Center’s experienced and knowledgeable river guides take you downriver to see the sights and sounds of this river in the summer. Discover the plants and animals that call this area home and explore the river’s backwaters as you re-imagine the river through a canoeing experience. The CNC provides all equipment for participants. Ages 6+; $30 general public/$25 members (per person).

Each trip is led by a CNC naturalist and offers a unique introduction to the ecology of the Chattahoochee River. Your naturalist will enlighten you as to the cultural and natural history of the river, citing important ecological relationships and environmental issues that affect this endangered river while allowing you to enjoy the peaceful qualities of the River. Canoe Guides are all CPR/First Aid Certified and are experienced paddlers and naturalists. Don’t worry if you are new to canoeing – CNC provides all equipment (canoe, paddles, and personal flotation device (PFDs) for participants. These trips are suitable for both beginning and advanced paddlers (ages 6 and up.) FAMILY CANOE DAYS Jul 16, 2016 (Sat) 10:00 am -- 11:30 am This event is running from Sat, July 2, 2016 until Sat, July 16 If you are just trying out canoeing for the first time, then register for a Family Canoe Day on one of the CNC’s ponds. This 1 ½ hour class is designed to teach boat basics and help perfect paddling. Their Canoe Guides will go over safety protocols and then let participants explore one of their ponds. Don’t worry if you are new to canoeing – CNC provides all equipment (canoe, paddles, and personal flotation device

(PFDs) for participants. They will spend extra time going over paddling techniques and equipment, but will also provide races, games and water squirters for those hot summer mornings. These trips are suitable for both beginning and advanced paddlers (ages 6 and up.) PRIVATE CANOE EXCURSIONS Ages 6 – Adult, Advance Registration Required at least 2 weeks in advance A private canoe excursion gives your group the exclusive attention of our naturalists. It’s a great opportunity for groups who want to spend time together while exploring the Chattahoochee River. Trips can be arranged to fit your schedule and can accommodate large and small groups. MOON LANDING PADDLE Jul 20, 2016 (Wed) 5:00 pm -- 9:00 pm This is the 45th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing. Join the CNC for a special weekday paddling trip followed by stargazing and a campfire. Ages 6 +; $40 general public/$30 CNC members (per person); Register two participants and save $5. MUSIC NIGHT ON THE RIVER Aug 12, 2016 (Fri) 5:00 pm -- 9:00 pm This event is running from Fri, Aug 12, 2016 until Fri, Aug 26 Paddle faster… we hear banjos! The CNC canoe guides will lead a 2 ½ hour sunset trip while we are serenaded by a string duo. They will open the grounds early for participants in this adults-only trip to enjoy a BYO picnic dinner. ROSWELL RIVERSIDE SOUNDS Concert Series kicks off on May 7. This series of six FREE outdoor concerts will be held at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road in Roswell, on the first Saturday of the month from May through October, from 7-9 p.m.

AUGUST 6 – The Get Right Band - Relix magazine’s “On The Verge” pick, The Get Right Band is “hip-shaking, earth quaking pure funk fun” (The Alternate Root). Combining catchy, clever songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show covers everything from funk to rock n’ roll to reggae.

There will be food trucks at each concert from 6-9 p.m. and guests are also invited to bring their own picnic and chairs as well. The following are the featured artists for each month: MAY 7 – Geoff Achison & the Souldiggers – Equal parts New Orleans Funk, driving Blues, jazzy Soul and outback Mojo, this southern blues/roots music is from the very deepest South – Australia. Geoff is a jaw-dropping, crowd pleasing guitar virtuoso with a rich vocal style from Melbourne. JUNE 4 – The Bonaventure Quartet w/Amy Pike – This longtime Atlanta outfit handily transplants you to another time and place while putting their own stamp on it all. The ensemble’s latest album, Lost and Found at the Clermont Lounge, may take its title from the Poncey-Highland dive-turned-tourist-attraction, but the disc’s 15 songs traverse decades, regions, whole continents. Roswell Magazine is grateful to Cindi Crane for the following valuable information related to our great city’s history: Cindi Crane is a member of the Georgia Writers Association, the Roswell Historical Society, The Trail of Tears Association, Friends of New Echota and The Georgia Trust. She has a BS degree in Marketing and has worked for 25 years in the technology industry. Her husband Steve is part Cherokee. Researching his family genealogy inspired Cindi to write her first historical novel, Roswell Redemption. Her second book, A History of Roswell Presbyterian Church is an addition to the original book, written by Clarence Martin in 1984. Cindi worked with the City of Roswell to build a monument to the Cherokee – to honor those who came before us. For more information contact cindicrane@bellsouth.net. IN 1838 THE MAJORITY of the Cherokees (approximately 12k) were forced onto the “Trail of Tears.” Only about 8K made it to their new Cherokee Nation—what is now called Tahlequah, Oklahoma. After being imprisoned for several months in the stockades, many of the Cherokees died or became ill from disease, exposure and malnutrition. The prior Cherokee Nation in Georgia was the land northwest of the Chattahoochee River, including the land that is now Roswell. The land was given away in the 1832 Land Lottery. In 2013 – 2014, the 175th anniversary of the Trail of Tears, Roswell decided it was time to ensure the Cherokee history was not lost. On July 19, 2014, the City of Roswell officially dedicated the Roswell Cherokee Memorial, stating, “To honor those who came before us… Roswell honors the Cherokee who called this place their home.” This is inscribed on one of the eight boulders that are situated along the Chattahoochee River at Riverside Park in Roswell, which tell the Cherokee story.

The Roswell Historical Society, established in 1971 is Roswell’s oldest historic preservation organization. Over the last 40 years, the Society has amassed considerable holdings of historically significant materials and artifacts which are recorded and preserved at the Research Library and Archives---and often displayed around Roswell. The Society and library is located on the second floor of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. The mission of the Society is to collect, preserve, share and promote the history of Roswell. Their vision strives to tell the story of the entire community and is committed to locating a permanent and visible facility to house and exhibit the vast collection from the past to tell that story. GETTING SUNBURNED DURING a family vacation in your youth can lead to skin cancer later in life. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why 20 minutes before you run outside to enjoy the summer, do this: Put on a hat and apply sun block with a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or greater. Sunburns are linked to skin cancer and by wearing a hat, longsleeved clothes and applying sunblock, you will help protect your skin from harm. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Most cases of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Melanoma spreads rapidly and can be life-threatening if untreated. Early detection: If caught early, melanoma is curable, so early detection is crucial. The number of skin cancers diagnosed every year in the U.S. exceeds the total of all other types of cancer combined. Recognizing the risks: Pay attention to any changes in size,

shape and color of spots on the skin. Look for moles that are big or have a strange shape. Also note if they vary in color or change with time. If you spot anything unusual, contact your doctor. More than just sunscreen: In addition to sunscreen, protect your skin from the sun and avoid indoor tanning salons. Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours. Wear dark clothing that covers your arms and legs. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are caught every year. THE TIME IS HERE AGAIN for warm sunshine, beautiful blooms, and plush greenery of the season. It also time for some things we are not so crazy about, especially: FLEAS. This brings to mind something we hear every year. I have NEVER had a flea problem!! You know the old saying, never say never, it gets us every time. The fact is you have always had fleas in your environment, but they have never become a problem. If you have squirrels and other wildlife living around your home, you have fleas. Hopefully this article will give some insight on where these pests come from how they live and the best ways to assure that you have a flea free summer. Here are a few flea facts. One flea found on you or your pet only represents one percent of the problem. The other ninety-nine percent are the eggs and larvae that are developing in and around your home. One adult flea can lay between twenty and fifty eggs per day, or up to one thousand eggs in a month, WOW!! This creates a difficult task to conquer the army of fleas that may be heading your way. month. If you have 20 adult fleas on your pet or in your environment that means up to twenty thousand new fleas could be coming. Boy these guys are prolific aren’t they!! The most common flea is the cat flea which infests dogs and cats. In our Georgia climate we rarely get the freezing temperatures we need for extended periods to kill the flea, eggs and larvae which can lay dormant for months. Keeping your pet on the modern topicals and systemic products is a great start in battling the fleas. Your pet must stay on these products year round to avoid an Oh No period. Missing just a few weeks or months in the fall can set you up for the summer you do not want. Also using granular products such as Dursban in beds around home and other areas previously mentioned can really help control and destroy the life cycle of the flea. Always read labels carefully to ensure that what you put out is safe for you and your pet. There are also many supplements that people swear by, like brewers yeast and garlic, that may aid in the fight against these external parasites. Always check with your veterinarian before using any supplement. Hopefully this will aid in your having a flea free summer and you don’t get caught saying FLEAve me alone.

Trained myofascial release therapists can feel a thickness and a resistance in the fascia. With hands-on gentle pressure, the fascial restrictions can be moved and unwound. People who have had myofascial release therapy have a hard time explaining their experience to others because the fascia responds to trauma and stresses differently in each person. ING, BUT ARE LOOKING FOR A FRESH, HEALTHY MEAL FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OR DATE. What is so special about the meals you’ll find at many Alpharetta establishments is the farm-totable freshness! The term “farm-to-table” has been around for many years and could be considered tired, and worn out. But a few local restaurants celebrate this like a happy, seasoned marriage: Fresh ingredients and great food! Farm-to-table dining began as a backlash against the industrialization, commoditization, and centralization of our food production system. The farm-to-table “movement” first began in the 1970’s with the public’s recognition of the benefits of organic vegetables.

By the end of the 1990’s the initiative slowly picked up steam and moved beyond vegetables to meats. First, grass-fed beef. Then, freerange chicken. Later, pastured pork. The production and consumption of lesser known livestock species soon began to gain momentum. These days, “farm-to-table” is a fairly ambiguous concept used in a variety of different ways in restaurants’ marketing, as well as in their kitchens. While some sales and marketing executives and journalists continue to use the term, most chefs and independent restaurant owners have stopped. “Farm-to-table” is an improperly and overly used adjective to describe various levels of food items on a restaurant’s menu which are sourced from local farms and markets.

Ryan Pernice, Owner of Table & Main and Osteria Mattone in downtown Roswell explains, “We make every possible effort to source through local farms. In fact, our Executive Chef Woolery Back (“Woody”) is the President of the board of the Roswell Farmer’s Market.” Farm-to-table is not just a restaurant philosophy, but is beginning to evolve as a lifestyle choice for many. “Thanks to the many food television series, social media, Pinterest and blogs, consumers are more educated and excited about what’s going on with their restaurant fare. They’re also more savvy and want to know exactly what they’re being served,” explained Chef Woody. At Foundation Social Eatery in East Roswell, Chef Mel Toledo offers, “If you’re a really good restaurant and really good at what you do, then you’re going to try to source from local farmers and use fresh food from local markets as often as you can.” He goes on to explain how the term “farm-to-table” has been abused by some to simply mean, “We’re healthy!” When, in reality, it is much, much more than that. “The use of locally grown food is a win/win/win for the restaurants, the patrons and the local farming industry…not just a ‘healthy choice.”

Very, very few restaurants are purely, entirely “farm-to-table.” Any restaurant using a single garnishing flower picked from outside can now call themselves, “farm-to-table.”

Toledo uses seasonal ingredients from local farms like Buckeye Creek Farms in Woodstock. He frequents the local farmer’s markets in the area. He works with Sweet Apple and Artisans Market Owner Christy Hood who fills his wish list of farm foods.

However, we are happy to offer up a handful of fabulous local restaurants in the Roswell area that do a pretty darn good job of it: Table & Main, Osteria Mattone, Foundation Social Eatery, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails and Peach & Pork Chop. These restaurants seem to us to go out of their way to source regional cuisine using locally

One thing that Chuck Staley knew when he opened Peach & The Porkchop is that today’s dining guests want to know exactly where their food is coming from. In designing the menu, Staley researched the local farms that could provide hormone-free, all natural foods and would fit into his North meets South menu. “We found the best local farms with the most responsible practices to supply us with fresh eggs, produce and meats…not only for our adult menus, but for our children’s menus as well,” reflects Chuck. “At many restaurants, the adult menu is filled with garden-fresh ingredients, while the kids are given a choice between frozen chicken fingers or pre-packaged Mac & Cheese. One of our focal points at Peach & The Porkchop is to provide the same high quality ingredients for both adults and children. There are more than 20 different farm fresh dishes on our children’s menu,” he adds. Local farms which provide these ingredients to our best restaurants are all located within a 25-mile radius of North Fulton and run by local Georgians who take pride in the products they produce. Some of these farms include Circle-A Farms in Cumming, Fat Land Farms in Roswell, Morning Glory Farms in Cedartown, Maxwell Farms in Dallas, Georgia, Gazaway Farms in Cumming and Buckeye Creek Farms in Woodstock. Chef Derek Dollar at Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails in Crabapple sources his ingredients not only from local farms but from the restaurant’s own “Milton’s Acre.” The acre behind this local, fine-dining establishment provides fresh, in-season produce year-round. Dollar says, “People are doing ‘hyper-local’ dining, choosing eateries that have fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
