All of these events are meticulously planned by hard-working local activitsts to make our community a great place to live and visit. Shannon Gowland of the Roswell Farmers Market tells us why bone broth is good for our health on page 22. Claire Murphy tells us all about the unique ArtAroundRoswell sculture display, which lasts throughout 2016. And, please read all about the upcoming festivals on pages 11, 18 and 45. LOOKING FOR DELICIOUS COFFEE on the run? Try scooting in and scooting out of Scooter’s Coffee in Roswell. The Roswell location on Crossville Road is the latest addition to a chain of drive thru coffee houses that started in Bellevue, Nebraska in 1998. Founders Don and Linda Eckles named the coffee chain after their daughter’s nickname, Scooter, and thought it fit their slogan well, “Amazing People, Serving Amazing Drinks, Amazingly Fast.” In 2001 they started franchising their stores and have now expanded into 15 states with nearly 135 stores including Roswell. Jon Erwin and his wife Deanna own the Roswell location that opened in November of 2015. It’s the very first Scooter’s east of the Mississippi. “When people talk about Atlanta, traffic is always in the conversation, so we wanted to be around a lot of traffic. We focus on speed, you don’t want to sit and wait. We are gonna be fast and our products are great,” says Erwin who relocated from Omaha a year ago. Scooter’s keys to success? Find a great location and stay committed to high quality drinks, fast service, a clean store a big smile! “A lot of people call us their coffee shop, locals have supported us tremendously,” says Erwin. The drive thru coffee house is committed to quality and only roasts

from the top 10% of speciality coffee beans in the world. On each drink sold, customers get happy face sticker, Scooter’s way of saying “Have an amazing day!” Partnered with The Arbor Day Foundation, Scooters uses mostly shade grown coffee plants. These beans grow under the canopy of the rainforest and trees are not destroyed. On the menu, customers can find dozens of drinks to choose from including a Candy Bar Latte, an Iced Carmelicious, or a Turtle blender. There are also ten kinds of smoothies on the menu ranging from a Strawberry Smoothie to a PB Power Smoothie and even a Green Tea Smoothie. If you’re looking for something on the healthier side, try a Skinny Sugar-Free Turtle Latte or a Skinny Green Tea Latte. Scooters also serves up an assortment of breakfast items to go with your favorite coffee drink. There are four kinds of breakfast burritos to choose from including a southwest burrito. If you have a sweet tooth, Scooters serves cinnamon rolls, muffins, breakfast breads and the hard to resist, Scooter Doodle Cookie. You can even scoot home with a bit of Scooter’s. Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 10am – 6pm. THE ROSWELL LAVENDAR FESTIVAL enters its 6th year and takes place on the 7.5 acres of the historic home’s property with distinct sections dedicated to the day’s activities. There are classes and demonstrations in the carriage house, lavender food samples, and sections for arts, crafts, antiques, food vendors, children’s activities and the ever popular Zen Zone. The free event features a full day devoted to all things lavender in a festival environment. The 2016 demonstration schedule is still being finalized but previous and popular topics included lavender wand making, creating lavender bath salts, and presentations on cultivating one’s own lavender plantings. New this year is an opportunity to “Make Your Own Fairy House” suitable for adults and children over 10 with adult supervision. Throughout the day, attendees can sample lavender infused foods, purchase lunch from the many food vendors and even enjoy a lavender cocktail or beer specially brewed for the Lavender Festival by Gate City Brewing.

IN THE JANUARY ISSUE, Roswell Magazine

featured my open letter to my Roswell Football Family following the incredible excitement of the 2015 football seasons for both Roswell High School and Blessed Trinity. Seeing both our teams in green represent our city in the state championship games is a memory that this city will always cherish. Despite the unfortunate outcomes of both games, you can only call the seasons “wins” for our great community. For the week leading up to the Georgia Dome appearances, we were truly “One Roswell.” At the end of the piece, I asked a heartfelt question, “How can we keep that spirit of unity alive in our city?” The answer might be as obvious as the green jerseys on our children’s backs.

I hear talk of an east/west divide, two Roswells, and heartfelt differences in perspective. It has me missing Roswell Hornet football in a big way! Granted, the council’s job is hard. Its members are trying to make difficult, complicated decisions where there are valid arguments on either side of any singular issue. I will always give credit to anyone willing to step forward and serve in this really challenging capacity. It’s a pretty thankless job. However, our council just can’t seem to reach the kind of unity needed to really spark progress for our city. When I share this observation with my friends in the community, they are shocked to learn that the “One Roswell” spirit doesn’t extend to City Hall.

Over the last few months, I’ve heard some amazing ideas. My friends and neighbors have shared their suggestions for watertower art projects, park renovations, connected bicycle trails, a tailgate before every Roswell home football game, and the possibilities of what an expanded MARTA train line to Roswell might afford. Every idea has its inherent complexities. However, as I’ve interacted with my neighbors and friends at parks, church services, restaurants, coffee shops, sporting events and civic functions, I’ve truly felt that unified spirit of a community that has a lot of pride and optimism for the future. Unfortunately, one place I haven’t felt that unity is at our bi-weekly city council meetings.

Having been involved in the creative process of group songwriting for over 20 years, I would like to present an idea to help bring unity to our city government. When my band would get stuck on the detailed nuances of a new song, I found it to be helpful to just take a break from the tedium and “jam” on a song we already knew. When we captured the unity that came when we are all in sync, we would return to the song creation process with renewed vigor. It always propelled my band forward to progress and results with renewed alignment.

I’ve attended every meeting of the calendar year, and I’ve had my utopian bubble burst a little bit for our great town. You see, the

When you look around at Woodstock, Alpharetta, and Sandy Springs, it’s readily apparent how strategic downtown development can revitalize a city. The City Green project would do just that in the best way possible. It would bring a beautiful park to connect our downtown shops and restaurants to much-needed parking. It would extend the vibrancy and charm of Canton St. to the surrounding area. Additionally, it could become a showcase for the veterans’ memorial that is otherwise unseen and hidden in the woods. Did you even know we have one? I didn’t! It’s time to have a visible memorial that honors Roswell’s own that have given their life in support of our nation. In short, the City Green would become the defined city center Roswell currently lacks. We have the money for it. It will be a net-gainer financially, and it will help make Roswell’s downtown the envy of every other city in the Southeast. Roswell, let’s jam on that! The City Green is a project that has something for everyone, and it should be a slam dunk. Everyone I share the City Green vision with is excited not only about enjoying the park itself, but the bridge it would be to intelligently expand our downtown district as it increases access and much needed parking. It’s time to capitalize on the “One Roswell” idea before division and stagnation becomes the new norm. The City Green project can bring us all together just like our boys in Green did this last December.

BRINGING POSITIVE CHANGES TO OUR COMMUNITY

businesses combine their efforts to support the revitalization of Roswell’s Historic District The Historic Roswell Business Association (HRBA) is an organization dedicated to revitalizing the longstanding contributions of the now dissolved Historic Roswell Merchant’s Association. The members of the newly developed organization plan to enable the businesses of Roswell’s Historic District to work together in a spirit of collaboration with Roswell’s government and non-government agencies to promote the growth, development, and economic prosperity of the downtown Roswell community. The Historic Roswell Business Association will work together to uphold its mission statement of “promoting the goals of the Historic District’s business owners to the city of Roswell, North Fulton County, and our customers present and future.” The HRBA represents the Historic District by overseeing five separate geographic “zones,” each with an elected representative to the Executive Council. Canton Street will be managed by Ann Marie Giglio of Core Matters, Webb Street by Shannon Schneider of Synergy Fine Art, Oak Street by Donna McDonald of MUSE

& Co. Fine Art, Roswell Square by Kelley Davis of Harry Norman Realtors, and The River by Alissa Reynolds of RAW Juice Boutique. The group’s membership elected Ryan Pernice, owner of Table & Main and Osteria Mattone, as the HRBA’s first Executive Director. “Roswell already has a vibrant community of businesses here in the Historic District. Our hope is that the HRBA adds an element of cohesive teamwork so that our businesses act as partners, all pulling in the same direction, for the betterment of Roswell’s development,” says Pernice. “We will continually ask ourselves how we can work together to make downtown Roswell more exciting for more people. That’s our chief concern.” One of the first tasks for the HRBA will be to develop a unified website that promotes the Historic District, highlights parking options for visitors, and addresses needed infrastructural items like beautification projects and way-finding. In the coming months, the members will be working hard to structure a lasting organization that will bring real positive change to the community of Roswell. Vintage Computer Festival: A Nostalgic Tech Trip Roswell is home to the Computer Museum of America and is host to the 2016 Vintage Computer Festival.

ACCORDING TO REAL ESTATE WEB SITE, Movoto, Atlanta ranks No. 1 nerdiest major U.S. city. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Vintage Computer Festival (VCF) chose Atlanta-metro as the Southeast location of their annual event. This exciting and interactive festival, held in only four U.S. cities each year, returns to Roswell on Saturday April 2, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday April 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

and Commodore PET – intertwined with the stories and exhibits of the big names such as IBM, Microsoft and Gates.

In addition to approximately 30 exhibitors from around the country displaying collections such as early Radio Shack equipment, half-century old minicomputers and early handheld video games, the VCF also offers an amazing line-up of speakers and workshops for computer history enthusiasts.

This public celebration of computer history and nostalgia is located conveniently off Georgia 400’s exit 7 in Kings Market Center, 1425 Market Blvd., Suite 200, with ample free parking. Admission for adults is $10 for one day and $15 for two days. Children ages 17 and younger are admitted free with an adult. College students also gain free entry with a valid student ID.

During the VCF, most computers and devices will be hands-on and interactive for attendees. In addition, during the Festival, The Computer Museum of America (CMOA) Pop Up, which is hosting the event and rarely open to the public, will be accessible for touring. Two Pop Up exhibits – on loan from the CMOA, which owns one of the largest vintage computer collections in the world -- feature rarities like an Apple I, the first disk II and controller card, an original Lisa, and so much more. A 6,000-square-foot Apple display covers the rich history of the company from its inception to “what’s next” as well as the history of Steve Jobs. The 7,600-square-foot Link exhibit features the three crowns of personal computing – Apple II, TRS-80

It’s also a time to play. A vintage game station and wall will be available for children and adults to play vintage games on classic computers and game consoles. Play Pac-Man, Super Pong and Mario on restored Atari, Sega and Nintendo machines.

The VCF event is hosted by the Atlanta Historical Computing Society and Roswell’s Computer Museum of America. The CMOA Pop Up exhibits’ artifacts are from one of the largest vintage computer collections in the world, owned by local resident Lonnie Mimms. BONE BROTH BUZZ

SO WHATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S ALL THE HYPE ABOUT bone broth if it has been around for over 10,000 years? Recently, bone broth has been the buzz for optimum gut health and a restorative or tonic for whole body health. Bone broth should not be confused with stock. Bone broth is boiled at least 20 hours or more and bones should crumble when cooled, this is the key to mineral extraction. Making the decision to include bone broth as a staple in your diet or committing to a gut restore diet can be a time consuming process and difficult to find quality bones. Bones should be from livestock raised by these standards: organic, pastured, grass fed / grass finished. Chicken Broth: The parts used is the back, necks, and feet. The feet are a great source of gelatin and a great choice for overall health, cellular repair, and collagen production. Beef Broth: Marrow bones are used and ideal for blood building & building iron. The key to a good Marrow bone broth is that the marrow is consumed. The marrow is a fatty substance in the cavities of bones. This is where blood cells are produced. Once the bone broth is complete use tongs or wait till broth is cooled and make sure all marrow is removed from bones and in the broth. The marrow and broth can then be pureed to emulsify. Of course, you can always consume the marrow straight as a treat with some Himalayan sea salt. Pork Broth: Part used is the back bone. The small amount of meat on the back bone can be removed and used in a breakfast dish or casserole. The back bones is supportive of the central nervous system and my favorite!

Fish Bone Broth: Use whole fish bones, or whole fish. Key to make sure gills and organ meats are removed as this can create a very bitter taste. Make sure all fish bones used are wild caught in areas with low mercury and that NO DIP or Everfresh was applied. Fish Bone Broth is an excellent source of iodine, and helps to promote thyroid health. Packed with healthy fats, amino acids, and minerals. This stock is a must! Benefits of Broth: ONE: Beneficial in restoration of gut lining and assisting with digestion. Gelatin protects the mucosal lining of digestive tract. TWO: Helps with cold and flus: Study finds that consuming chicken broth during a respiratory infection reduces white blood cells and reducing inflammation. (Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Section, Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE.) THREE: Helps to reduce Joint Pain & Inflammation: Glucosamine in bone broth may stimulate the growth of new collagen. FOUR: High amounts of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus in bone broth helps bones. FIVE: Collagen and gelatin supports hair and nail growth SIX: High in anti-inflammatory amino acids: glycine, and proline. Glycine is also calming and can help with easing and calming nerves. A SUMMER CAMP IS a great opportunity to introduce a

new skill or subject matter to your child. There are so many summer camp options, it’s difficult to decide which camp is best. We want our child to have fun, learn new things and experience different worlds. And we want the camp to be reputable and educational. Perhaps your child seems to have an interest in technology, or you simply want them to learn more about it. Technology camps are fun! How do you choose the right camp? 5 things to consider when looking for the right Tech camp: RATIO: The right balance of Student to teacher ratios determines how much attention the instructor is able to give to each child. Too many students to one teacher makes one-on-one instruction nearly impossible. Pro-tip: The adequate amount of student teacher ratio is 10:1 or 20:2, it is important that the ratio is just right. If there are too few students, there will be less social interaction, so children may get bored quickly. A class of 9/10 will be a good social atmosphere and will also challenge the child to perform. EQUIPMENT: All STEM fields need the students to work hands-on. It is essential that the student gets their individual parts or laptops/ desktops to work with. This will enable your child not only to learn at their own pace, but to actually come out with a sense of achievement. Pro- tip: Does the provider have individual machines for students. Are there any hidden costs associated?

QUALITY: Quality equipment is needed to ensure quality learning. For instance, if you are trying to run a graphic software on a chrome book, it simply won’t work! And the student will get frustrated. Whether they have PCs or Macs, the configuration of the device is important. Are the programs built around cutting edge technology and are they laying a solid foundation for advancement? Pro Tip: What kind of machines do they use? Example: an EV3 is a newer model robot than NXT’s; A laptop should have enough RAM (min 4GB) and Hard drive space (500GB+) etc. One of the latest buzz in tech is ‘3D’ and programming languages like JAVA never get old. VARIETY: You want your child to be engaged and try out various things in the summer. Variety will enable your child to explore different aspects of the very vast technology field and determine what they like best. Pro-Tip: If a camp has variety in their offerings, you will have more options for your child; and what more, you might even get multi-enrollment discounts! AGE DIVISION: For the class to run at an equal pace, it is important that the students are grouped properly. If not, the older students might end up moving faster than the younger ones. And in the end, the take away is very little. Pro-tip: Check if the elementary and middle school ages are grouped together or separately.

An initiative of Roswell Arts Fund city of roswell parks which runs April through December 2016--and a partnership between the City of Roswell and the Roswell Arts Fund, ArtAround Roswell is hosting ten established works of art on loan to the city by their artists. The sculptures will be on display in selected Roswell parks from April through December 2016, and a variety of special events and celebrations are planned throughout the year. You’re invited to explore, experience and enjoy! The ten works of art can be found in key park locations throughout Roswell. Whimsical, witty, nostalgic, awe-inspiring — learn more about the sculptures and make plans to experience them for yourself. Come

for a quiet visit, pause during a run or bike ride, or bring your friends and family to enjoy a day in the parks. Pictured above is AVIAN, a sculpture by former Roswell resident Michael Dillon. Poised and ready to take flight, Avian is a large bronze and iron wing mounted on a forged staff. Graceful and kinetic, the wing rotates 360 degrees, creating an interactive experience that transcends any preconceived notion of traditional bronze and iron sculptures. Michael Dillon has lived in and around Roswell for the past 25 years, and his works exemplify the Roswell spirit— steeped in history, with a modern flair. As a blacksmith and artist, his sculptures are hand forged using large industrial hammers to create work that is both visually uncomplicated and intricate.

THE LUMINOUS ARTIST COTTAGE of Southern Style cultivates over 150 artists both local and Nationwide, with art, clothing, jewelry, shoes and so much more represented. Tamara, the owner, is a formally trained artist and is a retired model for clothing, shoe designers, as well as an art director for a large adagency in NYC. With many years of knowing artists she has flocked with, Tamara, her husband and 2 boys decided to open this truly unique store in Roswell over 2 years ago where they have lived for over 25 years. This is a family store, everyone pitches in to help design, create and keep the community tethered into the ideals that we are striving for, “keeping things local “and not mass produced. They work diligently with all their friends to create a unique and non-typical look for your wardrobe and fashion minded women of all ages. Many of the artists design for Neiman Marcus, Sundance catalog, Anthropology and many European clothing lines. This collection of artists they work with make creations of things, many one of a kind creating this unique store. If we can’t find what we are looking for in clothing or jewelry, or want to create a trend, we believe in going to the artists to achieve the next look before it hits the runways. Then we start to make

clothes, jewelry, décor, etc. and make it ours and yours until we move on to the next unusual pieces. We want to make things with our designers to create a dreamy, romantic, comfortable or sexy look for you that are timeless and you can wear now or 20 years from now. Tamara believes that all women are beautiful creations which come in all shapes and sizes that are unique to them only. All we need to do is show them how to bring that out in their everyday lives either with a pair of beautiful earrings to make that outfit perfect, or a whole collection for our customers. It excites us to hear customers come in and say “Every time I wear this outfit I have people stop me and want to know where I found it?”! So the secret is out about this little store in Roswell and what amazing pieces you will find but remember, it’s probably the only one of its kind, so get it while you can. Art is showcased under the spreading branches of mature trees. Entertainment takes place from the bandstand, originally built to allow Teddy Roosevelt to address the crowds as he visited Roswell and his mother’s childhood home, Bulloch Hall. Just across the street you’ll enjoy a warm welcome at the Roswell Visitors Center. Roswell Jr. Women’s Club members operate a hostess tent in the Square, offering assistance to attendees and to the artists and craftsmen. Fine arts and original crafts, musical entertainment, and Roswell culture attract people from near and far as they enjoy this creative event. Mother’s Day weekend is the perfect time to gather the family and celebrate Mom’s special day. If you haven’t found the perfect gift for her – no worries! Artisans whose works are hand-made are invited to submit an application. We do not allow re-selling of merchandise but invite those who

make fine creations in paintings, clay, glass, fiber/textiles, graphics, mixed media, sculpture, and original hand-made crafts. Awards: Awards are selected at the judge’s discretion. Ribbons and cash awards are given to artists in the following categories Best of Show $400, Second Place $250, Third Place $100 4 Honorable Mention Ribbons are presented. The Roswell Junior Woman’s Club encourages community involvement, education and social interaction among its members. We are united by a dedication to community improvement through volunteer service. RJWC accomplishes its work through six departments, which focus on Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life, Public Issues and International Affairs. Through these departments we address issues such as women’s health, child advocacy and abuse prevention, community improvement, citizenship, international understanding, development of new skills for children and adults, homelessness and much more! We are a member of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs (GaFWC). GaFWC is part of an international organization, The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), representing more than 11 million women in 55 countries around the world.
