Rewind in your mind to 11:59 p.m. last New Year's Eve and take inventory: where were you in life? How have things changed around and within you since?

January is my one-year anniversary as Associate Publisher with Local Life Publishing. Twelve months later, my life is richer, as evidence of all the kind-hearted, passionately local people I have been blessed to meet in 2019. I had recently graduated (December 2018) from the Grady College of Mass Communications at UGA, having interned for LLP in a variety of positions, for 2+ years, already. The timing was right, and I fit the role, so Regina invited me to take on the responsibility of Associate Publisher, first for Milton Life, later adding Roswell Magazine, and now, Marietta! As we bid adieu to 2019, we welcome not only a new year, but a new decade – a modern, Roaring Twenties! Cheers to 2020!

After seeing the community up close, the team of Realtors decided to pay it forward. “We found ourselves surrounded by all the public service organizations of Cobb County, City of Marietta, and Dobbins Air Force Base, and we began to brainstorm on ways to engage” said Norm Kennedy. The home buying process can be both exciting and stressful, and the team at Village Realty Marietta Square quickly decided on a way they could help make home ownership more affordable for those who serve our community.

“Hometown Heroes” was created to help reduce the costs of buying a home for teachers, firefighters, police, EMT, and military personnel. “It can be a challenge to come up with the funds required to purchase a home, and between the down payment and closing/escrow costs, it can quickly add up. We feel that we can offer some assistance with those costs, and ultimately make buying a home more obtainable,” says Norm Kennedy. Village Realty Marietta Square has partnered with a ‘Hometown Team’ to serve these local heroes. Affinity Home Loans is offering discounted lender fees for the Heroes and their Attorney partner; Lueder, Larkin & Hunter is doing the same. The Village Realty Marietta Square Realtors® are committed to helping by giving a portion of their commission as a credit towards closing costs at the time of closing. All together the Hometown Hero could receive thousands of dollars in credits at closing.. VILLAGE REALTY, A FULL-SERVICE REAL ESTATE brokerage with multiple offices across the Metro area, opened the doors to their fourth location on the historic Marietta Square in March of this year. Norm Kennedy, General Manager and Associate Broker for the Marietta Square location, knew there was an opportunity to make grassroots connections with the community. Since opening the doors, the growing team of Realtors® have connected with the community through events on the Square and are continuously seeking ways to be a resource for both buyers and sellers.

SINCE RESCUING AND RESTORING the c. 1845 William Root House during the 1990s, Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society, Inc. (Cobb Landmarks) has been successful in attracting thousands of visitors to the museum every year, to learn about living as a middle-class family in antebellum Georgia. The in-

ber of visitors Cobb Landmarks could accommodate. In order to better serve the next generation of visitors, students, educators, and preservationists, the Root House campus had to be updated and enlarged. So, in 2017, Cobb Landmarks embarked on The Next Generation expansion project in order to make that possible.

"In the end, our society will be defined

The Next Generation project encompasses both the improvement and physical expansion of the Root House property, including upgrades to the existing historic structures as well as the addition of new structures. Upgrades throughout the campus include the installation of state -of-the-art museum

troduction of new programming meant a 300% increase in visitation between 2013 and 2016. However, a lack of space limited the types of programs and num-

Now, when visitors arrive at the museum, they will begin their visits by checking in at the newly completed Root House Museum Visitor Center, located inside of the refurbished 1830s Manning Family Cabin. The cabin is also home to the Root House Museum Gift Shop, featuring a variety of local handcrafted gifts and small batch mercantile goods. After checking in, guests can explore the museum campus at their own leisure. The interactive touchscreen displays and comprehensive exhibits allow for self-guided discovery, based on the visitors' personal interests. Cobb Landmarks is thrilled with the new experience we are able to offer at the Root House, but there is still a lot more work ahead! Scheduled projects include new exhibits and repairs within the c. 1845 Root House itself, and funding is still

needed for those improvements. So, while portions of The Next Generation project have been completed, Cobb Landmarks plans to hold off on an official grand opening celebration, until we have completed raising funds, and have all the entire project completed. TRADITIONS

“On the night our tree is decorated we bring down all the pillows and blankets, watch Elf and sleep under the tree lights.” – Lindsey Ramsey “We would coordinate and collect donations each year for the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Train.” – Alexis Schmid “Our family would have a treasure hunt for gifts that started at 4 am. After a 3-hour hunt, we would end up at the house where the big gift would be revealed.” – Anice Jones “All of us kids piling into dad’s station wagon (no seatbelts) to go look at Christmas decorations. In the ‘70s these were all homemade. Dad even made a huge peace sign that we decorated in garland and lights.” – Hicks Malonson “Eating the holiday foods that our family has served since the dawn of time. Not because we like them, but because that’s what we’ve always done. Canned asparagus with cream sauce, pearl onion casserole and fondue to name a few.” – Chris Norris

A collection of holiday memories by Harry Norman Realtors

W

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD ‘TRADITION’? This time of year it may invoke warm memories of your childhood baking Christmas cookies, or latkes, trimming a tree or leaving your shoes by the fireplace for Sinterklaas. No matter what your cultural background we all have traditions. Traditions are what bind us to the people we love and reminds us of our heritage. We asked our agents at Harry Norman, Realtors to share with us some of their favorite winter and holiday traditions that mean the most to them. “Searching our farm for the perfect cedar tree and my mom baking treats like divinity and popcorn balls.” – Francis Roberson

“Displaying the Nativity set that my parents had when I was a little girl. It brings to life the wonderful story of the birth of Jesus.” – Cindy Canterbury

“At Christmas dinner I have a special ‘table gift’ for each guest. Throughout the year I pick up small gifts with special meaning for each guest and use them as part of the place setting. It’s the last gift of the day and one we all look forward to.” – Velma Brennan

Harry Norman REALTORS® recognize that in the diverse Atlanta community not everyone celebrates the holidays in the same way. For our festive celebrations this year we are encouraging our team members to bring a dish that represents their culture or heritage. We hope this new initiative of sharing food and stories will create inclusion and greater understanding of who we are as individuals and as an organization. Whether your traditions are age old or if you start anew this season, all of us at the Harry Norman Historic Marietta office wish you good health, prosperity and peace in the New Year. Swimming tends to fly under the radar in the work-out world but it may be one of the best for your body. Marietta City offers 2 great options for those who like to stay in their lane as it were. The Cobb County Aquatic Center, located right here on Fairground, is open to the public with discounted rates for Cobb residents. You can drop in for a daily fee of $4.50/adult or take advantage of the monthly or even 10 visit pass rate. Our other option within the city limits is The Health Place located right at Kennestone Hospital. Slowing our pace a bit lets talk golf. Did you know that within our city limits is a public golf course? The City Club, located on Powder Springs St. (think Hilton) is an 18 hole piece of history. It began as the exclusive Marietta Country Club over 100 years ago but became public in 1991 for all to enjoy. This beautiful mountain course offers a challenging game as well as views that cannot be beat! When you’ve sunk the final putt be sure to sit for a meal at Hamilton’s Restaurant and take in the beauty of a Marietta sunset.

Availability and accessibility to countless trails, parks, sport courts and fitness clubs is second to none. ‘Marietta Life’ column is sponsored by Harry Norman, Realtors - Cobb/Marietta located at 776 Whitlock Avenue.

Completed in 2017, the Mountain to River Trail provides 13.5 miles of wide / paved trails from Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee River. Walkers and bikers discover unique murals by regional artists (above!) throughout the route.

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR AND THE SEASON of new resolutions! Are you one of the many folks gearing up for a fit and healthy 2020? 2019? Do you have a plan in place to reach your fitness goals? The agents at Harry Norman, Realtors want to share a secret to one of the many reasons we love Marietta: the availability and accessibility to countless trails, parks, sport courts and fitness clubs is second to none. Perhaps running is your go-to activity or maybe golf or tennis are more your speed. Marietta’s got you covered. Did you know that right in our backyard Kennesaw Mountain boasts 17 miles of trails? You can take your pick of the 1.35 Mile Environmental Trail lower loop which is kid friendly or step up your goal to the 11 mile 12 | February / March 2019

Battlefield Trail. Be sure to take the paved road trail or nature trail up to the top for a birds-eye view of our beautiful town.

Parks? Oh, we’ve got parks! Laurel, Tumlin and Henry Parks all have great paved paths ideal for the casual walker, runner or stroller brigade. Be sure to bring your kiddos because these paths are also great for their bikes, scooters and other ride-alongs. While you are there, the kids can start hitting their fitness goals by monkeying around on the creative playground equipment. We’ve seen many residents enjoying the basketball courts, tennis courts and soccer fields at these parks as well. You might even be able to join in on a game of ultimate frisbee if you time your visit right.

Let’s talk bikes. Thanks to the M2R Trail initiative, Mariettians now have a go-to bike trail. If you’re a serious biker you may prefer to stick to the roadways, but for those of us with more of a casual love of the sport (or with kids) the M2R, Mountain to River, Trail provides 1.8 miles of Marietta Landscape to roll by. Hop on at Kennesaw Mountain and ride all the way to the Marietta Confederate Cemetery or continue on the full 13.5 mile trail, which extends to the Chattahoochee River. If indoor fitness is your style we have no shortage of options from CrossFit to Fit Body to personal training. Did you know that Custer Park has a fitness center? For $2 (after a minimal $10 first time initiation fee) you can drop in and use the basketball court. Monthly memberships are extremely affordable for families who want to take advantage of the full facility with courts and weight gym. This may be the best gym value in town! Their signs can be seen throughout the piece. Obama's face is made of people attending Obama rallies, king speeches, the campaign, and inauguration. The right side has hundreds of protest images from across the political spectrum. and is intended to reflect Barack's expressed interest in being surrounded by people of opposing political views. This portrait is a digital collage, comprised of images celebrating the genius of a system designed for change and the greatness of the American right to protest. It took the artist about 2.5 months to create.

Hi guys. Do be sure to pick up some flowers for your sweetheart on V-Day, but do it with more style, class, and general savvy than any man your partner has ever encountered before. In other words, this is how you “win” Valentine’s Day: 1. Don’t tell the florist how to do his job. He/she is the expert - not you. 2. Anything other than red roses will show you put some thought into it.

Heads, I’m yours. Tails, You’re mine.

3. Bright colors don’t speak “romance.” Aim for neutrals and NO baby’s breath. 4. The big reveal: Hold them behind your back with one hand. Girls really dig that.

My wife and I visited Sope Creek for the first time on Thursday. This trail is not crowded and offers a quiet, peaceful, relaxing experience with over three miles of scenic hiking, mountain biking, and running trails. Our hike began at the Sope Creek trailhead, a natural terrain with some parts level and others steep. While completing the scenic loop we explored the stone ruins of a paper mill (ruins on both sides of the creek) destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War. We also spent an hour wading in the creek, having a snack and soaking in the views. We had a great experience and will definitely return. Sope Creek is in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area so there is a $5 fee to park and picnic tables and a water fountain at the trail head. Dog friendly; open daily. For those of you training for a 5K, you will want to continue on to the Cochran Shoals Trail. It runs along the Chattahoochee River and is very popular among the locals.

Why have we seen lots of couples and photographers out at Sope Creek lately?

A

Engagement Season,Season! Boys it’s Engagement

An engagement portrait session marks this specific phase of the relationship and may be used for “Save the Date” cards, a website or to frame and display at the wedding reception. Here are 10 tips to help couples get the best photos!

1. Chemistry and Couple Poses. Some couples are more playful and will laugh more, others will be more serious, and others will be romantic. What is the couple’s chemistry personality? 2. Try to explain the vision to the photographer - show examples. Give the photographer at least 5-10 favorite photos from that photographer’s current portfolio of work. 3. Bring 3+ outfits. Photo shoots can get stale really quickly if there is no change of clothing. Couples should bring clothes that are comfortable to wear and make them feel their best. 4. It’s OK to be Nervous. These sessions are usually the first pro 16 | February / March 2019

fessional portrait session couples have had. New experiences produce nervous couples. This is okay. Maybe a little music? 5. Create an Experience. Most of us aren’t professional models. The photographer will show couples how to pose and also allow the session to evolve organically. 6. Keep Moving. Walk, stop, give a kiss and keep moving on. Moving after about 15 photographs is smart. 7. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment. Perhaps you saw a photo in a magazine that you’d really like to try as a couple. Go for it. 8. Children and Dogs. If there will be children or dogs, break up the engagement shoot in two parts. 9. Have Fun. Try to forget the photographer is even there and focus on the one you love. 10. Take Individual Photos. You’ll want these and so will your families, so have them the same day.

After last year's injuries and frustrating record, the

Blue Devils sure did turn things around.

Lowndes’ perfect season dashed by Marietta in state championship. Harrison Bailey is Cobb County’s all-time leading quarterback. Marietta (13-2) was victorius over the Lowndes Vikings' (14-1) quest for their sixth state championship in program history, with a final score of 17-9. Lowndes drew a blank in the opening half for the first time this season while Marietta ripped 17 points off behind two rushing touchdowns from Kimani Vidal and a field goal.

Harrison Bailey (on the cover), quarterback and a 2020 University of Tennesee commit, led the Blue Devils to its first state championship in over 50 years. Marietta ran out the clock to pull off the 17-9 win for the 7A-state championship, for the first time since 1967, and the entire city celebrated.

“This school, this city, it goes hand-in-hand,” head football coach Richard Morgan said. “Everybody in this city supports it, the kids loved it, the community environment is great. So I think it's special for everybody that's ever gone to Marietta.”

Marietta had a 17-0 lead going into the locker room at halftime, which was enough to hold off the Vikings. They outscored us in the second half but Peter Warrick Jr. got a big-time interception on fourth down in the final three minutes to ice the game.

The team and coaching staff were paraded through downtown Marietta, which is tradition when a team wins big.

“There must have been 15,000 people from Marietta there,” he said. “It was packed, and it was great. It felt like a home game."

“We're celebrating a state championship and all the things these kids have accomplished both on the field and off it,” Superintendent Grant Rivera said. “There's just been so

“It just makes it all that much more special, because everybody is in that Christmas holiday mood and then you're celebrating a state championship, so it's just non-stop excitement,” Coach Morgan added.
