costumed characters from Alpharetta’s past as they stroll along Milton Avenue and rise from their gravesites at Resthaven Cemetery. Learn how Alpharetta grew from a farming community to the Technology City of the South. Live music and a soundtrack enhance the experience. The interactive tours will begin at Smokejack BBQ at 29 S. Main St. and continue through downtown Alpharetta to the cemetery.

PUMPKINS, CHRISTMAS TREES AND HOLIDAY CHEER

THE HOLIDAY SEASON is gearing up in Milton. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas provide many opportunities for families and friends to get together and enjoy these festive three months. Your local garden center offers activities and events geared towards celebrating each holiday with pumpkins, hay rides, farm animals, Christmas trees and wreaths, as well as late fall and winter plantings.

Selecting your pumpkin and family Christmas tree together is a fun and bonding experience. Families often enjoy lingering at their favorite garden center to enjoy hay rides, Santa Claus visits, face-painting, viewing farm animals and enjoying a latte or hot chocolate, while roasting marshmallows around a roaring outdoor fire. What a great way to create family memories and establish wonderful traditions!

While choosing a pumpkin is a simple matter; the owners at Scottsdale Farms would like to share a few tips when selecting your Christmas tree and wreaths.

Freshness is important to help assure your tree looks good in your home throughout the Christmas season. Ideally, trees should be harvested throughout the season instead of all at once to assure the tree you select is as fresh as possible. Instead of trees being displayed in a sunny parking lot, you should be able to select one displayed outside in a wooded or shady area. After selecting

your tree, ask the garden center to give it a fresh cut and place the tree into a stand with a large water capacity, as soon as you can.

Snow flocked trees are beautiful and resemble a powdery white, freshly fallen snowfall. Or, you may prefer your tree to be flocked light blue, which resembles a mountain tree covered with snow on a clear moonlit night. Flocked trees actually help needles adhere to the tree better and they should also be displayed in a water stand.

Many varieties of Christmas trees are available at garden centers: Fraser fir, Noble fir, Nordmann fir and white pines. Each variety has a different appearance, but Fraser fir is the most aromatic.

Most garden centers will carry sizes ranging from table top to specimens over 13’ tall. If you select a giant, consider having your garden center deliver and set up the tree in your home for you.

When selecting your wreath, consider one that is made on site.

While most wreaths are assembled with Fraser fir boughs as their base, many other local varieties of boughs can be added when your wreath is made for you on site such as: blue ice cypress, red berried nandina, vintage gold cypress, magnolia and cones. And almost any wreath is enhanced with a beautiful bow. At home you can mist your wreath daily with a spray bottle to help preserve freshness.

So gather your family and come create some memories over the next three months!

In Alpharetta and Milton, we celebrate so many diverse religious and cultural traditions and faiths. Faith is a big part of who we are at Alpharetta/Milton Magazine. This time of year, we take the time to honor all of our neighbors’ special holiday celebrations!

ALPHARETTA/MILTON JEWS celebrate Hanukkah later than usual this year! Hanukkah 2016 begins December 24 and ends in the evening of Sunday, January 1st. The first candle of the menorah is lit at nightfall of December 24th. Hanukkah is an eight-day festival of light that begins on the eve of the Jewish month of Kislev and celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality. More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by Syrian-Greeks. A small band of Jews defeated them and reclaimed their Temple. When they sought to light the Temple’s menorah (seven branched candelabrum) they found only a single cruse of olive oil. Miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity. Local Jews and their families celebrate for eight days, giving gifts each day. Children get excited and Jews celebrate many activities around town.

THE ISLAMIC NEW YEAR- also known as Hijri New Year, is the day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year and is the day on which the year count is incremented. The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the calendar. The first Islamic year begins in 622 AD, with the emigration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra. All religious duties such as prayer, fasting in the month of Ramadan, and pilgrimage---and the dates of significant events such as celebration of holy nights and festivals--are calculated according to the lunar calendar. A day in the Islamic calendar begins at sunset. This year, the Islamic

New Year began October 3rd. Happy New Year! In Alpharetta and Milton, many of our Muslim neighbors worship at the Islamic Center of North Fulton located at 1265 Rucker Road.

HINDUS CELEBRATE a religious holiday in December

called Pancha Ganapati, which is a five-day holiday that honors Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed lord of culture and new beginnings. The celebration begins Dec. 21 and includes outings, picnics, feasts and gift giving. Pancha Ganapati includes traditions that are similar to Christmas traditions. Families put up a statue of Ganesha and decorate their homes with pine boughs, or durva grass, tinsel, blinking lights and ornaments. Children dress the statue in different-colored clothes for each day of the celebration. Each color, including yellow, blue, red, green and orange, represents a different aspect of the holiday. Many Hindu families in Alpharetta also join in Christmas festivities, including parties and gift-giving so that children do not feel left out of the most-celebrated national holiday in the US. And, in India, which has the largest population of Hindus in the world, Christmas is actually a national holiday, celebrated as a festival by many Hindus around the world. Many dog owners wonder why their pet becomes so nervous and sometimes even frantic during a thunderstorm.

“STORM DOGS” have varying degrees of nervousness during storms. Some dogs may just feel the need to be closer to their owners.

Others may pace and pant. Some pets literally PANIC and freak out during a storm. Many clients have told stories of their dog tearing up furniture, digging through sheetrock, shredding carpeting and some pets have even broken through windows as the panic escalates in a storm. This type of behavior usually happens when owners are away during a thunderstorm.

Thunder Phobia is not uncommon and most pets don’t grow out of it. Many times pets will actually develop this issue as they get older.

Certain breeds that display higher levels of separation anxiety, or pets with more nervous tendencies seem to be more affected. No one really knows all of the causes or triggers that cause this panic in a storm but many pets may start to be uneasy before there is any sign of a thunderstorm.

Many speculate that it is a change in barometric pressure that the dog may sense which starts the nervousness. Then the thunder begins in the distance and the pet becomes more nervous. Then the high winds loud

claps of thunder and lightening begin and this is usually when the pet hits panic mode. Some experts say that a pets coat may actually pick up the static from the electrical storm and create shocking sensations.

Many pets that are scared in a storm are also afraid of backfiring cars, gun shots and fireworks, which lead many to think it is just more of a fear of loud noises.

It is very difficult to find a remedy when you have a pet that panics during a storm. First of all, a well trained pet that listens to your command is a benefit. Babying the pet during this kind of behavior may only encourage the same behavior next time a storm rolls around.

Having a special place for your dog, such as a crate that you can cover with a blanket may be helpful in making your pet feel more secure. Many clients have to resort to medications that will sedate the pet or use Benadryl in a higher dosage to create a drowsy affect so the dog is not so panicky. Always consult your veterinarian for proper dosing of any medication. Several years ago a product known as the thunder coat came out for pets. Many clients use them and like the affect they get when there pet is in panic mode during a storm.

The best way to possibly remedy this problem is slow methodical conditioning. Starting at a very young age and remaining consistent.

Using a hair dryer starting on low and working your way up so your dog gets used to the sound. Walking your dog near an area where there is car noise. Getting your pet as used to as many sounds and loud noises as possible may help condition your pet away from this behavior. There is no perfect explanation or solution but Thunder phobia is not pleasant for the pets or their owner.

THERE IS NO MAJIC FORMULA that predicts who will be diagnosed with breast cancer and no one is absolutely not at risk for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is typically most treatable when it is detected at earlier stages, so breast screening is a very important part of a woman’s health care plan.

Most people don’t know that about 80 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a relative who had the disease.

That’s why it’s so important to get yearly check-ups and mammograms for anyone over the age of 40.

Two easy ways to reduce your risk for breast cancer •Eat healthy •Stay fit Because breast cancer has been associated with obesity, watching your diet and exercising are great lifestyle changes anyone can make (and they have benefits for other aspects of women’s health as well!)

Family History If a woman does have a family history of breast cancer, her risk may be increased so she has several options to learn more.

Genetic counseling and testing can help women understand how their family history impacts their odds of developing breast cancer and learn about options for increased screening or even surgery to reduce their risk.

A simple blood or saliva test can determine if a person carries a mutation in a gene that increases the chance of developing breast, or other cancers.

The most well-known examples are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes; however additional breast cancer genes have been discovered as well.

A harmful genetic mutation can be inherited from a mother or father. Each child of a parent who carries a mutation in one of these genes has a 50 percent chance (or 1 in 2) of also inheriting the mutation.

Therefore, genetic testing is not just information for one person, but a whole family.

Anyone considering testing should first speak with their doctor who can refer them to a genetic counselor, so all of the implications of testing can be discussed.

Age is an important risk factor The time for average risk women to begin having yearly mammograms is age 40, but some doctors recommend beginning earlier depending on certain factors, like family history.

Although mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, statistics show that by screening for breast cancers and detecting them at the earliest possible point, they can lower the risk of a woman dying of breast cancer by 35 percent in women over the age of 50.

Brake lights illuminate Alpharetta on a brisk fall morning as commuters head into work. But many cars are making a stop before they reach their final destination at a location that more and more people are learning about every day.

Since becoming a private school five years ago, Fulton Science Academy is blazing an impressive path. From moving into a beautiful new campus last fall, to sending five academic teams to represent the state of Georgia in national and international competitions in 2016, FSAPS serves advanced and gifted children and was just named the Best Private School (K-12) in North Fulton/South Forsyth Counties by Appen Media.

With so much attention recently, we wanted to learn more about Fulton Science Academy. I took a moment to speak with the school’s principal, Kenan Sener, to discuss just a few reasons why this is quickly becoming a standout school in North Fulton.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine:

First, I’d like to congratulate you on recently being named “The Best Private K-12 School” in North Fulton by Appen Media.

Were you surprised by this honor?

Sener: We were! I’ve learned many valuable lessons throughout my educational career, the most important being the value of hard work and listening to those around me. As such, our administrative team focuses daily on creating a culture where our teachers enjoy coming to work and have the support they need to be successful and innovative in the classroom.

We’ve found that when teachers are enthusiastic about their jobs and feel valued and supported, this creates a very positive trickle-down effect; students love coming to school as well! To peek into a classroom, a visitor would see that students here perceive learning to be a privilege, not a punishment. Add into that equation our incredible parent volunteers, and we feel so fortunate. The Appen Media Award, while not expected, is certainly appreciated. It has put a spring in everyone’s step!

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: Wonderful! I also heard that you were a finalist for two presti-

gious STEM Education Awards this fall. Care to discuss?

Sener: Sure. The Technology Association of Georgia hosts a statewide competition annually to recognize excellence in STEM education. This year, our school was chosen as a finalist in the middle school and extracurricular program categories. With more than 130 outstanding nominations, this is a huge honor for FSA because it speaks to the value of the education we offer. We want to set the standard for STEAM education nationally and internationally and this recognition is one step towards achieving that. For a school of our size and our scale, this may seem like an ambitious vision, but this is what we teach our students and what we practice in our lives as well.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: FSA appears to be very committed to giving back to the community. I just saw a news segment on 11Alive about your students’ efforts to raise money for pediatric cancer research in September. Please explain.

Sener: September was an amazing month! To support Childhood

Cancer Awareness Month, our school decided to do a fundraiser to support pediatric cancer research. By the end of the month, students had exceeded their goal by more than 700%, raising more than $8K for local nonprofit, CURE. The children’s giving spirit is contagious here at FSA. Our students love helping others, and it warms our hearts.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: Your enrollment is rising and I hear you have blueprints in the works to expand the campus and include a high school. What are your ingredients for success? What makes your school different from other private schools?

Sener: There is certainly no shortage of wonderful private schools in Atlanta that we respect greatly. We follow a STEAM curriculum with emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in a setting that serves advanced and gifted students. Yes, our students have access to lots of innovative technology. But they also embrace classes in art and music and relish outdoor time through PE and daily recess. don’t even want to leave the school at the end of the day.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: Anything else?

Sener: I think our school is special because of the value we place on relationships and the sense of community we enjoy here. Everyone longs to be part of a group where they feel comfortable and accepted. At FSA, there is no, “one size fits all” mentality. Each child is different. Each teacher is different. Each subject is different.

We ask ourselves daily how we can combine these forces to provide the best educational experience for each individual child. If something works well, we model it for others. If something doesn’t, we take immediate action to remedy it. In other words, we call ourselves a small school with a big heart.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: Are you concerned you’ll lose this focus and flexibility if your school continues to grow as it has in the past few years?

Sener: No. FSA will always remain a small school with a family atmosphere. With only 455 students, we really get to know and enjoy one another. As we expand, we will carefully manage that growth. We will always have a small elementary school, a small middle school and a small high school. The personal attention we are able to provide in our small school setting plays a big role in our students’ success and we will continue to keep it that way.

Alpharetta/Milton Magazine: Do all of your students plan to go into STEM-related careers?

Sener: No…we have a very diverse student body and we love every child’s uniqueness. We know that our students will be leaders of the future taking important roles in society. Some may choose to work in STEM fields, but we realize that many others will be wonderful journalists, lawyers, economists, professors, and will choose other careers to lead the way for others.

We’ve always told our students that if you love what you do, work never feels like work. We encourage students to follow their passion and look for careers to fulfill them. From that vision, with hard work and personal discipline, success will follow. The past has proven this to be true; I believe the future will prove it truer, still.

According to a February 2015 CDC report, the effectiveness of the flu shot was just 18 percent overall, 15 percent among children ages two to eight, and nine percent for seniors ages 65 and older. The nasal spray flu vaccine showed almost no benefit for children ages two to eight.

Last year’s flu season was said to be one of the worst in years, and by January 2015, the CDC had warned that the flu vaccine was a poor match to the influenza A strain, which caused most cases of the flu, because it had mutated early in the season. Yet, health officials still urged everyone to get a flu shot, saying it would make symptoms less severe, without providing evidence to support this claim.

In addition to questions regarding the flu vaccine’s effectiveness are concerns about its safety. Side effects range from numbness and tingling of the skin, chest pain, shortness of breath, laryngitis and convulsions, to spinal cord inflammation (myelitis), optic nerve inflammation (optic neuritis), facial palsy and paralysis.

Though recommended for pregnant women, the flu vaccine is categorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Pregnancy Category B or C Biological.

The best way to prevent the flu is to maintain a strong immune system through optimal lifestyle and nutrition. Avoid sugar and processed food (sugar immediately decreases immune system function), get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, and optimize your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is important for proper immune function and is also an effective antimicrobial. Studies show that children who take just 1,200 IUs of vitamin D3 daily are 42 percent less likely to get the flu. Adults can supplement with 5,000 to 8,000 IUs daily during the winter months.

Other ways to support optimal immune health include proper hydration, regular exercise, stress-reduction techniques, hand washing and daily probiotic supplementation, as 80 percent of the immune system resides in the gut. ALPHARETTA’S “BUILDING CHARACTER” is a local business that takes an unusual and fun approach when it comes to teaching acting to kids – they design acting classes around the mindset of building life skills through theatre and the arts.

Building Character caters to the needs of the up and coming generation and focuses on developing social skills and building confidence as opposed to making students famous. This creative outlet allows so many young individuals to find their voice and grow, which proves incredibly fulfilling to founder Whitney Christopher King.

King acknowledges that technology may be leading to the next generation’s downfall in social skills, so Building Character works to develop eye contact, public speaking, confidence, and finding an individual voice.

“Acting is learning about how to feel comfortable in your own skin,” King said. “Kids realize they can make their peers laugh or feel something emotionally because of how they play a scene, and they feel stronger and gain confidence. This newfound confidence translates well to their daily lives both in and out of school.”

King uses her extensive credentials and background in acting and theatre to lay out a style of performing that allows students to ultimately find a strong sense of self and embrace their uniqueness. King

designs her classes around basic acting skills and even improv, and she along with her five other teachers and counselors, empower the students to take chances and step outside their comfort zone.

“These skills come natural to the adult generation, but technology, especially smartphones, are making it disappear,” King said. “In our classes, they can use their voice and practice eye contact and projection to make human interaction common again.”

Building Character can cater to children who want to perform as a career, but it’s mainly geared towards providing an inviting environment that enhances communication and basic social skills. Classes take place primarily in the school system, but King also offers summer camps along with an afterschool program in Downtown Alpharetta at the Tributary Building for elementary and middle school aged children.

Feedback from parents about children taking the games they learned in class home to their families has allowed King to recognize the incredible impact she’s making on the children she sees in her classes.

“It’s so fulfilling to watch these kids grow” King said. “It’s the best job, and I look forward to going to teach. It’s really a dream come true.”

The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce Golf Networking League program involves 9 holes of golf at both Milton Country Club and Crooked Creek courses every other week, for 16 weeks. After participants play 9 holes, they join together in the clubhouse for fun, food, drinks, and networking.

I tried to explain to my grandson about why the Parmesan cheese on his pizza smells so bad and tastes so good.

My five-year-old food critic said, “This pizza stinks because it is rotten.” He absolutely trusts his nose when making culinary decisions which makes him not much of a cheese connoisseur, but well equipped to choose fish. He has spent a lot of his five years in my seafood markets and he knows that fish (and fish stores) should smell like the ocean, not the dead fish lying on the dock in the sun. Here’s what he would tell you about buying fresh fish: Don’t buy it if you can smell the fish counter from the grocery store parking lot. (Really you shouldn’t be able to smell the fish from across the fish counter.)

If your house stinks to high heaven the morning after you cooked fish, the fish wasn’t fresh. (Cooking fresh fish won’t stink up your house.)

If you hold the fish to your nose and suddenly remember that time at the lake when the dog rolled around on a dead fish and stunk up the car on the way home, you probably don’t have fresh fish. (If you are uncertain, you can always ask the fishmonger to hold it up so that you can smell it.)

People often tell me that my stores smell like the ocean and my fish has a clean, briny smell like seawater. Don’t accept anything less than perfect fish. Keep it at 40 degrees or below and eat it in two days or less.

And one final note on noses, did you know that it appears that salmon find their way back to their birth rivers by smelling?

Downtown Alpharetta experienced Alphapalooza 2016 on October 15th! This new fall festival took place outside of the host’s doors, at the Alpharetta First United Methodist Church located at 69 North Main Street.

Mission booths featured hands-on activities and games, where attendees learned simple ways to serve others in our community, across the country and around the world. The hands-on, interactive missions booths represented that day were: North Fulton Commu-
