PUBLISHER’S POST Marietta. This is intended to be a statement - the confident answer to the question, “Where are you from?” or “Where do you live?” Marietta.

H

Hey, Mariettans! As the weather warms and the days get longer (don’t forget to spring ahead on March 10th), a renewed energy takes over. Whether you’ve stuck to your New Years resolutions, given up on them or haven’t made any yet, we hope this “Easy to be Active in Marietta” issue inspires you a little. In this issue, we focus on how “easy” it is to stay active living in Marietta because there is a plethora of ( free) recreational and leisure activities to participate in yearround. On p10, Harry Norman Realtors - Cobb Marietta office shares one of the many reasons they love Marietta is the accessibility to countless trails, sport courts, fitness clubs, and golf courses. Research shows social connection is vital to well-being, that having a strong network of support or community fosters both emotional and physical health. On that note, turn to p32 to find three ways to make “Galentine’s Day” a bonding time for you and your girlfriends on February 13. As 5K season begins to roll into Marietta, you might as well start signing up now. You’ll read about two inside: Jr. League’s 10th Anniversary Mardis Gras 5K and the Sope Creek Elementary Furry Friends 5K - p12 and p21. Celebrating his 90th birthday this month and born in the same year as Arnold Palmer and Popeye, “Ironman” Jim Gillen, a resident of Sterling Estates of East Cobb, has always been driven in one way or another. Read about how he is inspiring others to stay fit well into their golden years on p20. #lovelocal

What is Galentine’s Day? Galentine’s Day, a nonofficial holiday, is celebrated as a day for “ladies celebrating ladies.” What is Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Or at least that’s according to Leslie Knope, the beloved deputy parks director played by Amy Poehler on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.” While Valentine’s Day is about celebrating romance, Galentine’s Day — held on Feb. 13 — is about “ladies celebrating lady friends.” It’s a chance for women to leave their husbands and boyfriends at home to get together with their female friends — ideally over a big breakfast. Though it hasn’t hit mainstream culture yet, the sitcom-invented holiday is catching on among real-life women. It gives friends a chance to gather to share life experiences, exchange heartfelt gifts and serves as a great reminder to support not just female friends, but all women in our community.

February 14 (This post if for guys’ eyes only)

Hi guys. Do be sure to pick up some flowers for your sweetheart on V-Day, but do it with more style, class, and general savvy than any man your partner has ever encountered before. In other words, this is how you “win” Valentine’s Day: 1. Don’t tell the florist how to do his job. He/she is the expert - not you. 2. Anything other than red roses will show you put some thought into it. 3. Bright colors don’t speak “romance.” Aim for neutrals and NO baby’s breath.

Heads, I’m yours. Tails, You’re mine.

4. The big reveal: Hold them behind your back with one hand. Girls really dig that. 5. Buy locally grown flowers for your eco-conscious girlfriend from the Farmers Market to really impress! 6. Take off the cellophane wrap - give fresh cut flowers. www.mymariettalife.com | 11

COLUMN - MARIETTA LIFE

EASY to Stay Active in

Marietta Availability and accessibility to countless trails, parks, sport courts and fitness clubs is second to none. ‘Marietta Life’ column is sponsored by Harry Norman, Realtors - Cobb/Marietta located at 776 Whitlock Avenue.

Completed in 2017, the Mountain to River Trail provides 13.5 miles of wide / paved trails from Kennesaw Mountain to the Chattahoochee River. Walkers and bikers discover unique murals by regional artists (above!) throughout the route.

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR AND THE SEASON of new resolutions! Are you one of the many folks gearing up for a fit and healthy 2019? Do you have a plan in place to reach your fitness goals? The agents at Harry Norman, Realtors want to share a secret to one of the many reasons we love Marietta: the availability and accessibility to countless trails, parks, sport courts and fitness clubs is second to none. Perhaps running is your go-to activity or maybe golf or tennis are more your speed. Marietta’s got you covered. Did you know that right in our backyard Kennesaw Mountain boasts 17 miles of trails? You can take your pick of the 1.35 Mile Environmental Trail lower loop which is kid friendly or step up your goal to the 11 mile 12 | February / March 2019

Battlefield Trail. Be sure to take the paved road trail or nature trail up to the top for a birds-eye view of our beautiful town.

Parks? Oh, we’ve got parks! Laurel, Tumlin and Henry Parks all have great paved paths ideal for the casual walker, runner or stroller brigade. Be sure to bring your kiddos because these paths are also great for their bikes, scooters and other ride-alongs. While you are there, the kids can start hitting their fitness goals by monkeying around on the creative playground equipment. We’ve seen many residents enjoying the basketball courts, tennis courts and soccer fields at these parks as well. You might even be able to join in on a game of ultimate frisbee if you time your visit right.

schedule for Hula Hoop Fitness, Cardio Fusion, Tumbling, Karate and even Pickle Ball which is growing in popularity.

Swimming tends to fly under the radar in the work-out world but it may be one of the best for your body. Marietta City offers 2 great options for those who like to stay in their lane as it were. The Cobb County Aquatic Center, located right here on Fairground, is open to the public with discounted rates for Cobb residents. You can drop in for a daily fee of $4.50/adult or take advantage of the monthly or even 10 visit pass rate. Our other option within the city limits is The Health Place located right at Kennestone Hospital. Grab an annual membership and you will have access to their weight gym, fitness classes, swimming pool, track and they even have childcare. Bonus! Slowing our pace a bit lets talk golf. Did you know that within our city limits is a public golf course? The City Club, located on Powder Springs St. (think Hilton) is an 18 hole piece of history. It began as the exclusive Marietta Country Club over 100 years ago but became public in 1991 for all to enjoy. This beautiful mountain course offers a challenging game as well as views that cannot be beat! When you’ve sunk the final putt be sure to sit for a meal at Hamilton’s Restaurant and take in the beauty of a Marietta sunset.

Let’s talk bikes. Thanks to the M2R Trail initiative, Mariettians now have a go-to bike trail. If you’re a serious biker you may prefer to stick to the roadways, but for those of us with more of a casual love of the sport (or with kids) the M2R, Mountain to River, Trail provides 1.8 miles of Marietta Landscape to roll by. Hop on at Kennesaw Mountain and ride all the way to the Marietta Confederate Cemetery or continue on the full 13.5 mile trail, which extends to the Chattahoochee River. If indoor fitness is your style we have no shortage of options from CrossFit to Fit Body to personal training. Did you know that Custer Park has a fitness center? For $2 (after a minimal $10 first time initiation fee) you can drop in and use the basketball court. Monthly memberships are extremely affordable for families who want to take advantage of the full facility with courts and weight gym. This may be the best gym value in town! While you are there be sure to check out the

‘Hooked’ on

Studio Bungee By Cheryl Rodewig

MENTION THIS AD FOR A

“It’s one-of-a-kind,” says Pam Younker. In a workout world of treadmills and dumbbells, this new fitness studio off Whitlock Avenue has colorful bungee cords and harnesses that give you a fun, safe way to workout. Instructors guide you through exercises in small groups — no more than six to a class — as you tackle some serious calorie burn. It’s low impact, taking stress off your joints, but high energy to build strength and improve cardio. So why a bungee? Owner Christal McNair shares, “I personally wanted a new innovative way to workout in the community and help remove obstacles for individuals like myself. Before opening the studio, I was having tremendous issues with walking short distances and now with just 2-3 workouts/week, I feel better and my mobility has improved.”

Low Impact. High Energy. BEGINNER thru ADVANCED CLASSES AVAILABLE IN

Stretch / Flexibility • Balance + Stability • Cardio • Mommy + Me • Ab Blaster • Personal Training

As it turns out, that elastic cord fastened securely to your harness makes a lot of things possible: assisted push-ups, lunges that won’t strain your knees, even handstands if you’re so inclined. “The 30 minutes evaporates,” says Younker, who takes an early morning class a few times per week. “I tried it once and I was hooked. Everybody can do it. People come as they are.” The studio offers one-on-one personal training to focus on specific goals, but they can also tailor movements for individual needs within the class setting. That means you’ll see all levels, from people recovering mobility after trauma to fitness buffs to kids, seniors and those simply bored with their routine at the gym and looking for something — well, different. A little curiosity is welcome, even encouraged. Drop-in classes let you get a taste of Studio Bungee to see how it works for you. On their Facebook and Instagram pages (@ studiobungee), you can glimpse photos and videos that show it in action. To find out class schedules and packages, visit studiobungee.com.

HIKING TRAILS TO STAY FIT! RUINS FOR GREAT PHOTOS!

we couldn’t have said it better ourselves!)

“Lovin’ the Creek!”(

Reviewed October 26, 2018 via mobile by “Dan” a Level 6 Reviewer on TripAdvisor, from Panama City

My wife and I visited Sope Creek for the first time on Thursday. This trail is not crowded and offers a quiet, peaceful, relaxing experience with over three miles of scenic hiking, mountain biking, and running trails. Our hike began at the Sope Creek trailhead, a natural terrain with some parts level and others steep. While completing the scenic loop we explored the stone ruins of a paper mill (ruins on both sides of the creek) destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War. We also spent an hour wading in the creek, having a snack and soaking in the views. We had a great experience and will definitely return. Sope Creek is in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area so there is a $5 fee to park and picnic tables and a water fountain at the trail head. Dog friendly; open daily. For those of you training for a 5K, you will want to continue on to the Cochran Shoals Trail. It runs along the Chattahoochee River and is very popular among the locals.

Why have we seen lots of couples and photographers out at Sope Creek lately?

A

it’s Engagement Season!

An engagement portrait session marks this specific phase of the relationship and may be used for “Save the Date” cards, a website or to frame and display at the wedding reception. Here are 10 tips to help couples get the best photos! 1. Chemistry and Couple Poses. Some couples are more playful and will laugh more, others will be more serious, and others will be romantic. What is the couple’s chemistry personality? 2. Try to explain the vision to the photographer - show examples. Give the photographer at least 5-10 favorite photos from that photographer’s current portfolio of work. 3. Bring 3+ outfits. Photo shoots can get stale really quickly if there is no change of clothing. Couples should bring clothes that are comfortable to wear and make them feel their best. 4. It’s OK to be Nervous. These sessions are usually the first pro 16 | February / March 2019

fessional portrait session couples have had. New experiences produce nervous couples. This is okay. Maybe a little music? 5. Create an Experience. Most of us aren’t professional models. The photographer will show couples how to pose and also allow the session to evolve organically. 6. Keep Moving. Walk, stop, give a kiss and keep moving on. Moving after about 15 photographs is smart. 7. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment. Perhaps you saw a photo in a magazine that you’d really like to try as a couple. Go for it. 8. Children and Dogs. If there will be children or dogs, break up the engagement shoot in two parts. 9. Have Fun. Try to forget the photographer is even there and focus on the one you love. 10. Take Individual Photos. You’ll want these and so will your families, so have them the same day.

“MOVEMENT EQUALS IMPROVEMENT.” That is a clever phrase used consistently by the wellness teams at Sterling Estates Senior Living Communities. After spending time touring their state-of-the-art fitness facilities, we can say this is much more than just a phrase. It’s a ‘philosophy.’ The Wellness Directors and their teams are well versed and serious about how beneficial staying physically active is for their residents, and this philosophy seems to trickle into every aspect of community life.

are with motivating residents. The group participation of the many classes offered on site seems to be a big factor instilling a community-wide mindset of wellness and activity. We spoke with Ayles Herrington, Wellness Director at Sterling Estates of West Cobb, who explained, “Our residents enjoy the camaraderie, and we know it produces better results when we are all encouraging each other to stay as independent as possible.”

It’s common knowledge older adults who do more aerobic physical activity have reduced risks of age-related physical problems, accidents, and ailments. Additionally, consistent activity substantially and positively affects their mental attitudes, sleeping habits and overall quality of life. We didn’t realize though that the latest research indicates sticking with exercise routines as we age reduces the incidence of many cancers, dementia, anxiety, depression, and weight gain.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are addressing the common issues of isolation and loneliness in the baby boomer generation. They say that caregivers and loved ones who deliberately provide environments for regular social interaction really helps. This is positive affirmation of Sterling Estates’ approach to wellness as a core value. Herrington agrees and has witnessed improvement in overall happiness for many residents who move into Sterling Estates from their homes where there was less social interaction with their peers.

It’s tough motivating ourselves sometimes to be more active, and it’s even tougher on our own to encourage our aging parents and loved ones to exercise more. What we noticed at Sterling Estates is how impactful the Wellness Directors

How is Sterling so effective in getting residents to participate in its wellness programs? Aside from the natural motivation that occurs in group settings, we think it’s because their Wellness Directors build relationships with

exercise classes, individual or group water aerobics in their onsite indoor heated saline pools, daily walking throughout the large campuses and gardening in their communal resident gardens. They even have a bocce ball court that gets great participation throughout the year with plans to add shuffleboard courts this spring.

Herrington beamed when she said, “In 2018 we had over 80% of our residents participating in at least three physical fitness sessions a week!” The programs at Sterling Estates offer residents many options including one-on-one personal training, a variety of group

SO HOW DOES HE STAY ON TOP OF HIS GAME? Jim responds, “I like being able to do different exercise routines in our Wellness Center at Sterling. The variety really helps my golf and keeps it fun for me.” This Ironman isn’t some comic series character, Jim is the Ironman of Sterling Estates Senior Living Community in East Cobb where he utilizes a combination of individual strength and aerobic training taking full advantage of the treadmill, recumbent bikes, and upper/lower body equipment in the wellness center as part of his daily exercise routine. He is faithful to his weekend yoga class every Saturday. Wellness Director, Laura Kelly, says “Jim would be the first to agree that his physical fitness has improved significantly since moving into Sterling. He’s been participating recently with the recreation therapy basketball and golf programs we have started at Sterling and, on top of all that, he seems to be able to throw in an occasional water aerobics class or group cross-training/boxing class. He is, indisputably, Sterling’s Ironman.” Born in the same year as Arnold Palmer and Popeye, Ironman Jim Gillen, has always been driven in one way or another. As a young boy during World War II, he mowed lawns to earn money. Living in a golf community, it didn’t take long for Jim to learn that more money could be made 20 | February / March 2019

by being a caddy. Beginning at age ten he carried bags through the hilly course, sometimes Jim Gillen, 90 carrying four at a time. Learning to play golf fell into place from there. After college and the Korean War, Jim met his future wife, Ann, on a blind date to play golf. Jim moved into a cottage at Sterling Estates just over five years ago. Partner, Marshall Gill, says “It’s been fun and rewarding for us, and him, to watch him maintain his physical fitness.” Golfing served Jim well throughout his professional career, and still enjoys the game after taking a couple of years off to care for his beloved wife! Celebrating his 90th birthday this month, Jim plays with a handicap of 18 but says he is working on regaining his previous handicap. Asking this Ironman what his goals are for the new year, he responds “My 2019 goal is to improve my balance, and with the versatility of my individual wellness program we’ve developed at Sterling, I feel this goal can be accomplished.” Jim’s advice to older adults? He doesn’t beat around the bush with his reply. “Don’t sit on your butt and play Bingo!”

The 875-square foot Manning Cabin, built in 1830 and currently under restoration will be the centerpiece of Cobb Landmark’s the Next Generation expansion project. By Trevor Beemon Executive Director Cobb Landmarks

Cabin Survived 2 Centuries

H

And now, it’s finally this structure’s time to shine...

HAVE YOU DRIVEN ON THE 120 LOOP and noticed a log cabin that seemed to appear overnight, you are not alone! It’s the Manning Cabin, and it was moved to Marietta from Powder Springs last September as part of a project led by Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society. The project is taking place at the William Root House Museum & Garden campus. The oldest home remaining in downtown Marietta, the Root House is a landmark in its own right; but the addition of the c.1830s Manning Cabin will only add to the significance of the site. Originally located on Macland Road, the Manning Cabin was owned by David Irwin (owner of Marietta’s Oakton) during the 1850s and was occupied by members of the Manning family during the Civil War. Through the years, the cabin was enlarged and eventually was concealed by a wood frame farmhouse. In the early 1990s, it was scheduled to be demolished for a road project. As the house was being torn down, the log cabin underneath was revealed. Manning family descendants stepped in to save the log structure, which was then dismantled and reconstructed on family property near Powder Springs. The cabin was used for family gatherings, parties, and photo shoots for the next 25 years. Today, the Manning family’s wish is that the cabin be preserved for generations to come, and the family generously donated the cabin to Cobb Landmarks in 2017, requiring that it be removed from their property.

The cabin was moved to the Root House campus last September and will be used as an interpretive center, containing exhibit space and event and lecture space. A large addition to the cabin will contain staff offices, a research library and conference room, visitor restrooms, and a small catering kitchen. The addition of the interpretive center will allow Cobb Landmarks to begin hosting temporary and traveling exhibitions, lectures, and large-scale educational programs, which will expand its reach in the community. Cobb Landmarks also plans to make the space available to rent for private events. Plans are to have the building completed and open to the public by the end of 2019.

February: HEART HEALTH MONTH

Enduring Hearts Marietta- based Miracles

M

By Thomas Smith

MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT WHEN a child with congenital heart disease receives a heart transplant, it does not mean that child is automatically cured and will never experience additional complications in his or her lifetime. In fact, the average heart transplant only lasts 12 years. Nearly one in four pediatric heart transplant recipients face the reality of needing a second transplant within five years of the procedure. Marietta residents Patrick Gahan and Ankur Chatterjee, are two unsung heroes leading the pioneering efforts of Enduring Hearts, a nonprofit with a mission to fund research that increases the longevity of pediatric heart transplants, improves quality of life for transplant recipients, and eliminates pediatric heart diseases that may result in transplant. 28 | February / March 2019

Gahan and his wife Madelyn co-founded Marietta-based Enduring Hearts in 2013, just months after learning their daughter Mya needed and received a heart transplant. They were inspired to act after learning how little was being done on the research front, so heart transplant recipients and their families did not have to go through the harrowing prospect of a second or third transplant. Chatterjee served as the organization’s executive director from 2015-2017. He is now president of Enduring Hearts’ Board of Directors. Gahan cites proximity to such assets as major highways, airports, and outstanding schools as some of the top reasons for choosing Marietta as Enduring Hearts’ home. Chatterjee added that Marietta’s focus on the family unit has been a natural fit for the charity.

Who will E.H.’s work help? •Babies born with heart defects that cannot be surgically repaired and require a heart transplant. •Children who experience end-stage heart failure through heart disease, infection, and Cardiomyopathy. •Kids, their moms and dads, their sisters and brothers and their grandparents all live with the anxiety knowing that their transplanted heart may fail eventually. •Many kids who receive other transplanted organs will also experience organ failure due to rejection. •Adult heart transplant recipients.

Why is E.H.’s work so necessary?

Patrick & Madelyn Gahan are co-founders of Mariettabased Enduring Hearts. photo: the Gahan Family. (L-R) Back row: Patrick, Madelyn; Front row: Mya, Anya

•A transplant is not a cure. The average heart transplant only lasts 12 years. •Within 5 years, 25% may need another heart transplant. Of those who have another transplant, nearly half will not survive. •Organ rejection is at the core of the problem. We need to combat rejection before, during and after the transplant procedure. •The quality of life for these children is negatively impacted by harsh anti-rejection drugs and invasive rejection detection procedures. •Without a curator, funder, and advocate, compelling research would simply remain ideas within the brilliant minds of the physicians and scientists who desperately want to help these kids live a normal, healthy life. •There are many organizations that fund research aimed at repairing congenital heart defects, but we are the only organization solely dedicated to helping kids who have received or require transplanted hearts.

What E.H. researches:

Over the past five years, $3.3 million has been raised for 16 research grants, including six funded in the past year. The promising research has resulted in 28 abstract and peer-reviewed publications, as well as multiple follow-up studies. And these are just some preliminary successes. In July 2018, Enduring Hearts launched a family/ patient support program called the “Road to Recovery Gas Card Program.” The program provides gas cards for transplant families to help mitigate the excessive travel costs from home to the transplant centers. It is operating in 10 hospitals across the US with a goal to expand to 10 additional transplant centers in 2019. Learn more about Enduring Hearts at www.enduringhearts.org

Enduring Hearts’ Scientific Advisory Committee seeks to fund projects that have a combination of the best science, innovation, and potential for impact. Since its inception, Enduring Hearts has deployed more than $3.3 million in research funding, aimed at fostering the development of new technologies, creating new guidelines for post-transplant care, improving patients’ compliance with medications, and most importantly, developing less invasive procedures to combat organ rejection.

E.H.’s Road to Recovery Gas Card Program Transplant families endure frequent back and forth travel during hospitalizations and follow-up appointments/labs during pre and post-transplantation. Due to the financial burdens associated with transplant cost, families often lack additional resources to afford fuel costs associated with this required travel. The goal of the Enduring Hearts Road to Recovery Gas Card Program is to help mitigate fuel costs associated with transplant care. Help support this important program. www.enduringhearts.org www.mymariettalife.com | 29

Passersby on historic Church Street may not realize the Georgia Symphony Orchestra began 68 years ago inside one of its treasured homes. In 1951, the music room of Arthur F. Moor's home on 383 Church Street established what has become one of Georgia’s finest community-supported, multifaceted performing arts organizations. Today, more than 700 individuals participate in one of its diverse programs, as musicians, vocalists, educators, students and volunteers. While the GSO has grown from its humble beginnings as the Marietta Music Club, its purpose has not wavered. “Our mission is to enrich our community through high-quality musical programming and educational experiences that are accessible to all,” said Susan Stensland, executive director. The GSO’s musical programming includes a regional symphony orchestra presenting classics and pops concerts; a 90-voice GSO Chorus, which performs orchestral and choral classics, pops and independently produced events; and GSO Jazz!, an ensemble offering Big Band and combo performances.

30 | February / March 2019

“Serving our community encompasses all its members, including individuals with special needs,” said Stensland. “We are proud to offer our annual Sensory Friendly concert, designed especially for persons with sensory challenges and their families.” The GSO also is home to the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 2006, it is the largest youth orchestra program in the Southeast, encompassing four orchestras, a jazz ensemble, a percussion ensemble and a youth chorus. Gifted and talented elementary through high school age musicians from across the region are selected through competitive auditions. Timothy Verville, GSO music director and conductor, declared, “Our board, staff and musicians work tirelessly to create and present high-quality events that keep audiences coming back and wanting more. Our educators create welcoming and challenging environments for our continually growing youth orchestra program,” he said, “which now has more than 360 students.” continued

Serving as artist in residence at the Marietta Performing Arts Center, the GSO also performs regularly at KSU's Bailey Performance Center and at the Strand Theatre. The organization presents an average of 20 concerts annually through the GSO, GSO Chorus, GSO Jazz and GYSO. www.georgiasymphony.org.

The GSO's 4th annual sensory-friendly concert is a great opportunity for those with special needs to enjoy the orchestra, which has adjusted its usual constraints and has specifically tailored its song list for people with autism and their families. Timothy Verville designs the National Endowment for the Arts supported Sensory Friendly concerts, community based events created to celebrate neurodiversity in our community. Joining the performance this year are the members of GSO chorus, and the popular instrumental petting zoo will again be active in the lobby. The performance lasts about fifty minutes and audience members are allowed to move around, sing, and just be themselves! In 2018, Georgia Symphony Orchestra received a $10,000 Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of the Sensory-Friendly concert. NEA’s “Challenge” grants support projects that extend the reach of the arts to under-served populations whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.

5

simple healthy habits

CAN YOU BELIEVE WE ARE already rolling into our 2nd month of 2019? As I look back on the end of 2018 to see the goals I have set for this year I begin to realize a common theme, health and vitality. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Here are 5 habits broken down into these three categories: Physical Habits • Daily exercise - this can be as simple as a mile walk or even just a walk around the block with the dog. Any movement is better than no movement. • Daily stretching - a simple stretch like bending at the waist and letting your torso hang as your neck lengthens is physically healing to your body and mind. Mental Habits • Meditation - daily 5-10 minutes of meditation with an app like Headspace will help you calm your mind. As the Stoic Philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, points out, “The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength.” • Chiropractic care - most people feel as though this should be in the physical category, however, a specific chiropractic adjustment helps to re-connect the brain function with the rest of the body. This improves the quality of life. Social Habits • Family/Friend time - set aside one day per week to give to your family or friends. Whether it be a board game, a movie, a fun day in the park, or a night out. Quality time is what heals us most. Get your Life Turned uP today and step closer to the health that you want in 2019 by adding these 5 simple habits to your routine. Column provided by Dr. Jamie J. restaurants must adapt

Engage with Local Chefs to ensure Personal Dietary Restrictions are met. According to one local chef, dining out does not have to be “hazardous to your health.” How can I eat out and be healthy? Make the right choices! Choose the right restaurant! Allergies, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, IBS, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and strict diets are a chef’s new challenges. Consumers are choosing more of the right foods. No preservatives, organic, fresh, local, low-fat, high antioxidant, vitamin rich, clean, pure, and GMO-free are all customer preferences you now hear very frequently and if you are a restaurant owner, must be prepared to offer on the menu. The key for a chef is the choice of ingredients, garlic, spices, soy, lean meat, plenty of seafood fresh vegetables and steamed rice for carbs are the foundations for heart-healthy cuisines like Korean, Greek-Mediterranean, Lebanese, Thai, Indian and authentic Mexican. Restaurants today have no choice but to adapt their menus to the intricacies of customer preferences and must be willing to cook to order. Flexibility is key; accommodating special requests is paramount to keeping diners coming back for more. Fresh, farm to table, organic and healthy ingredients are expected. If you are looking for both tasty and healthy, choose small, low capacity, high quality boutique restaurants operated by creative chefs to satisfy your palate. Ask questions, a good restaurant manager should be familiar with each dish. Try to talk to the chef-a good chef should be more than willing to engage with their patrons. Finally, pair your meal with a good wine. Now that the holidays are over our focus shifts on getting fit and healthy for the New Year. Fortunately it is winter time where we can disguise those extra pounds in oversized sweaters, but what about our skin? Now is the time where your skin needs that extra love. Here are some tips to give your skin that healthy glow and keep it hydrated. The key is to find products that contain hyaluronic acid. This is a natural molecule that our own body produces. Hyaluronic acid holds 1000 times it’s weight in water. - Dina
