Brenda Sevcik, Chair of 2018 Milton Literary Festival, summed up local sentiment, when she stated,

"Being a resident of Milton since its inception, I have firsthand experience of the generous hearts and souls of my neighbors. We are people who choose to live a mindful, quiet life on the outskirts of a major metropolitan city, while being involved in civic, philanthropic and community activities. ABOUT US

Publisher's Post Falling Forward It's almost time to set our clocks back, which really does signal the leaves are about to change in Milton what a pretty time of year to live here - in a city which puts such a deliberate focus on preserving greenspace for future generations. It's not just talk. We're serious about our land. In addition to land preservation, another part of our unique community identity is the commitment to our equestrians, their lands and their horses. This attention and care is bringing up young people who are achieving equestrian recognition at the collegiate level - see page 12. On the cover we feature a brand new restaurant concept coming to Milton very soon! 7 Acre BarNGrill is another 30004 Sedgwick Restaurant Group concept, which boasts its chef's penchant for California Comfort Food. Sounds good to us. 7 Acre is opening in the space at the corner of Hickory Flat and Birmingham in the old Wilbur & Rudy's spot. Read more on page 22. The biggest news we've got this issue is that we have TWELVE locally-owned, family pizza restaurants in our zip-home 30004. That doesn't include the chains. Since September 20 is National Pizza Day - we conducted taste tests at all twelve - read our conclusions on page 14. Festival season! Mark your calendars for the Milton Wine Festival (September 23), Crabapple Fest (October 6), Alpharetta Wire & Wood Songwriters Festival (October 12-13) and Milton's Literary Festival (Novemer 10). Finally, we show you a peak inside a 'modern farmhouse' in Milton whose designer Katie DeRario delivered interior design harmony among seemingly contradictory objectives. Out of space! Happy Fall, y'all! #lovelocal, #30004life

MARGARITA MYTHS Just for Spring and Summer Best in Mexican restaurants Only with limes and tequila

Pomegranate Margarita

Seasonally Savory MARGARITAS The best restaurants in Milton and downtown Alpharetta often have 'seasonal' menus in order to ensure the freshest, ripest local ingredients are used in their food and drinks. If you thought margaritas were just for summer, think again. Here are some options that will work deliciously this Fall.

EVERY AUTUMN USUALLY FROM September to November, cranberries reach their peak of color and flavor and are ready for harvesting. Pomegranates’ season typically runs from October through February. Ellijay apples, grown in Georgia's Apple Capital, are the first new crop available in the country every year, with the season beginning in late August. Pumpkins are in season in the South from September through December. With an increased focus on 'farm-to-table' cuisine, how much attention is given to 'farm-to-glass' drinks? Moderm mixologists and bar managers know how to work fresh ingredients into their creations, too. Margaritas are extremely versatile, and are easily adapted to the season by substituting for classic fall flavors like ginger, apple, pomegranate, pumpkin and cranberry. The Union restaurant, as well as PURE created the Frida Artistry

10 - www.30004life.com

Series of seasonal margaritas after a popular promotion they did with Frida Kahlo Tequila, featuring local, organic and in-season ingredients. Local artists submited artwork representative of Frida Kahlo and what her art, her person, etc. meant to them. They then chose a winner, whose submission was printed on bar glasses. Today, anytime a guest orders the Frida Artistry seasonal Margarita of the month, they receive the glass and are able to learn more about the artist by visiting her blog.

A Unique Community Identity

EQUESTRIAN

Who are we? What is Milton's unique community identity? • Family Lifestyle • Greenspace Preservation

• Homes | Design | Real Estate • Equestrian

MILTON HAS A DISTINCT COMMUNITY IDENTITY, which is evident simply by viewing the list of committees and commissions in our government structure. We find in our editorial department there are about four main things that make up a community's idenity - its collective beliefs and priorities which determine its community personality. It's who we are and how we wish to be perceived by outsiders. One of Milton's "things" is the commitment to equestrian and land initiatives. We love our horses. We looked but couldn't find another city in North Fulton or neighboring counties, which had equestrian committees in their government structure. Just us. Milton's special committee is made up of locals appointed to provide oversight and external review of horse related initiatives - representing the people on these matters. City of Milton's equestrian committee’s mission is "to advocate for, promote and then participate in the selection and interpretation of equestrian initiatives and events, to encourage local exploration, generate civic pride, increase tourism, as well as showcase local farmland and horse related businesses." These citizens - all volunteers - who have been appointed to this committee include Julie Shannon (Shannondale Farm), Carol Cookerly (Cookerly Public Relations and new city council member), Susan Day, Tony Rich, Larry Covington and Lis Drevet.

REAP WHAT WE SOW McKenzie Maloney

Carly Reinsel

Cambridge, Milton, Kings Ridge and St Francis high schools all offer some kind of equestrian club or team experience. Two young local women spent their high school years entrenched in Milton’s horse community. Today, University of Georgia junior Carly Reinsel (Mount Pisgah graduate, daughter of Christina & Mike Reinsel) and sophomore McKenzie Maloney (Milton High School graduate, daughter of Diane & Brian Maloney) are members of the one of the best equestrian teams in the country. UGA Equestrian won the SEC title last year and are entering this 2018-19 season ranked #2 in the nation. Since UGA added this intercollegiate varsity sport in 2001, the equestrian squad has become one of the University’s most successful athletic teams, winning six national championships, most recently in 2014. UGA just announced it’s building a $3.1 million clubhouse for the team. We anticipate many more young Milton riders will be following in these young women’s footsteps. As this city continues to cherish its equestrian identity, our young people will take greater interest and continue onto collegiate and professional levels. Children sense what we prioritize, which thens becomes part of how they view themselves and gives them a sense of belonging and feeling of community. Fall 2018 -13

30004pizza This is one of those articles we come away from writing with new insight into our community's preferences. Apparently, we love pizza - but not just any pizza. Hand-crafted pizzas made with homemade sauces and seasonal, fresh local ingredients and toppings. Did you know there are 12 locally-owned and/or family operated pizzerias in 30004? We didn't either. These local, small business owners chose Milton as the place to open and grow their family businesses.

Mondo Italian Kitchen is a casual, family restaurant offering authentic cuisine using seasonally changing, fresh, local ingredients. The made-from-scratch NYstyle pizzas and specialty Italian dishes impress first-timers and attract regulars who tend to brag about the “diamond” of a little restaurant they’ve discovered off of Hwy 9. The Osteria (tavern area w/ communal table) stocks boutique Italian wines selected by the owner, cocktails and local, craft beers.

Vinny's is California Italian, fresh, light, less traditional and consistently rated “Excellent” by Zagat’s. The wood oven pizzas are favorites of professionals and locals who have dined here for over 2 decades. Other specialties include seared big eye tuna with pinzimonio salad, beef carpaccio, rack of lamb, veal or chicken scallopini and an unforgettable tiramisu. Our favorite is the Prosciutto, Spinach & Fontina Pizza made with caramelized onions and white truffle oil.

Humble Pie Pizza Co. offers a family-friendly atmosphere with bright colors, big TVs and local artwork on the walls. Its giant chalkboard menu lists all the toppings, unique combinations of pizzas, sandwiches and calzones, plus its variety of local, craft beer. Trivia Tuesday has become a competition among regulars. Chef Abe Colin of New York is, in essence, a pizza artist, ranking 2nd internationally and 1st in the Southeast at the 2018 Intn'l Pizza Expo in Vegas.

I Love NY Pizza - here you'll find the chef takes the pizza business very seriously. In the Birmingham Publix shopping center, the place has been a favorite of north Milton locals for 9 years, but they can't keep their secret pizza joint a secret much longer, as more families eye north Milton as an ideal spot to call home. Zesty, homemade pizza and Italian menu items, cold beer and lots of booths, they're a family-owned company doing pizza right.

Brooklyn Joe's was voted best pizza & Italian 5 years in a row. They are a family-owned and family friendly restaurant founded in 2007, which prides itself on using only the highest quality meats, cheeses, and produce. The restaurant offers daily specials and a variety of wine and beer. Gluten free options always available. Brooklyn Joe's has become a popular caterer for special events in Milton homes. They deliver within a limited area.

Peace Love and Pizza was born out of their love for everything 'cool.' Handcrafted food and family-friendly experiences are what they do. They are passionate about customer service and the "experience" of going out for a pizza - with music and colorful decor - one that 'defies the boring chain guys with rockin' family experiences'. California-inspired flavors, PLP welcomes customers with open arms that say, "Relax and welcome home." They promise 'jam-up pizzas with amazing sauce and topping combinations."

Vintage Pizzeria is known for its NJ influenced, hand-tossed, thin crust pizza crafted with dough made fresh daily. This family friendly restaurant also offers homemade Italian dishes, appetizers, a variety of salads and sandwiches, an extensive wine and beer selection and specialty cocktails at the bar. Situated in the heart of Crabapple, this full-service pizzeria has an outside dining area with a charming brick patio. Lunch specials and Thursday trivia.

Flippin' Pizza makes the dough fresh daily without oil, sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. It is hand tossed to create their thin and airy crust, and then their signature sauce, 100% whole milk mozzarella and fresh toppings are added. Each pie is baked to perfection in brick ovens to create a crispy, slightly darker crust. They serve 18” hand-tossed pies and offer 10” gluten-friendly pies upon request. Salads, sides and desserts are also available.

Your Pie's artfully prepared, hand-tossed pizzas use made from scratch dough, homemade pizza sauces and salad dressings, which are all inspired by family recipes from the Italian island of Ischia. Offering vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free pizzas alongside traditional pies, paninis and sandwiches, they aim for the perfect "pizza experience." Local craft beer, wine and Italian-style gelato pairings go great with guests’ unique pizza creations. Fall 2018 -15

The Union is one of Milton’s most eclectic and delicious restaurants for homestyle cooking and cold local beer - chic and barn-like, with somewhat of a 60’s colorful vibe going on, the kitchen serves up loaded wood-oven pizzas like the Margherita and the Classic Pepperoni, as well as Bob’s Pittsburgh Pizza with homemade pepperoni, hot sausage, sopressata, three cheeses, mushroom and banana peppers.

Bobby G's is an authentic Chicago-style eatery and the local go-to sports bar to catch Fall football. The menu includes favorites such as the Classic Italian Beef Chicago-style Hot Dogs, Deep Dish and Crispy Thin Crust Chicago-style Pizza, and the Superior Ave Super - The MacDaddy. Regulars order DA-Meaty pizza with a couple of Bobby G’s extensive selection of draft beers, including local craft beer from Jekyll Brewery. Games always on. Trivia on Wed nights.

850ºF Barpizza has one of the largest selections of whiskey in Georgia. A scratch kitchen, the menu has a sizeable gluten-free selection. The chef uses "00" high-gluten neapolitan flour, San Marzano tomatoes and fresh bufala mozzarella in their authentic napoletano pizzas. Six red and six white pizzas - our favorite is the aptly named "Miltonese" - fresh, homemade tomato sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella, thin slices of green peppers, mushrooms, thin sliced onions, parmigiana and EVOO.

musicians who have worked with Mumford & Sons, Joy Williams, Ingrid Michaelson, Meghan Trainor, Gungor, and Ben Rector. Chasing Lovely's mission is to provoke thought, promote understanding, and capture both glimmers of light and darkness by sharing the human experience through song. We really liked one of their songs, 'Always and Never Enough' - although we may have stopped the lyrics after the fourth stanza where it veers off track a little, but it's a beautiful piece - and we purchased it! Hopefully, as this duo keeps writing and performing they'll continue tapping into their old souls because we are loving what we've heard and seen so far. How did you come up with your band name? Chasing Lovely was originally a fashion blog Taylor created after looking up the definition of "lovely": having a beauty that appeals to the heart or mind as well as to the eye. When we needed a name for our duo it seemed a natural fit.

in the early morning I could smell the earth and I wondered if our hearts still beat for her do I like who I’ve become? live for me or everyone? we are always and never enough saw the hurt and felt the sting of what I’d done in a heart I’d only laced with good intention why does what I do in love never seem to measure up? we are always and never enough life is full of things we can’t control but even when we can . sometimes we don’t it is neither either/or good or bad or right or wrong we are always and never enough there’s a body of a boy washed on the shore and a man without a home that I ignore there’s a war in me and a war out there close our eyes and doors to what we hear the cries. the screams they’re fleeing for their lives while we sit safe inside land of the free. home of the brave a Trail of Tears runs through our history America the great built on the backs of slaves still have yet to right the wrongs we’ve made we’re making strides. but we’re losing lives we need to fight. not one another. for each other America, America God shed his grace on thee and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. always. never Music & lyrics by Taylor and Chloe Turner © 2016 Taylor and Chloe Turner Music

Our Eyes in The Digital Era How can we prevent damage to our eyes from so much time spent on devices?

D

By Dr. Vishal Patel, Eye Care Solutions (Milton)

DIGITAL DEVICES HAVE BECOME a necessary and integral part of our lives. We use them at work, home and at school. They even live in our pockets. We’re constantly texting, researching, working, and social media-ing on our smartphones. Many of us have replaced traditional books with them, opting for tablets like iPads and Kindles instead. According to The Vision Council, an independent group eye doctors, the average American now spends 7.5 hours in front of a screen every day and nearly 50% of all Americans have jobs that require prolonged computer use. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), also referred to as Digital Eye Strain (DES), describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged use of digital devices. Many individuals experience eye discom-

fort and vision problems when viewing digital screens for extended periods. The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of digital screen use. DES Symptoms include: • Eye fatigue • Eye discomfort • Headaches • Dry, itchy and irritated eyes • Blurry vision • Neck, shoulder and back pain Two of the main culprits behind DES are blue light and glare. These byproducts of digital devices can contribute to many of the aforementioned symptoms. Prevention or reduction of these vision problems involves taking certain steps to control lighting and glare on the device

screen. Luckily, DES is not a permanent vision issue. By following Dr. Patel’s recommendations below, your eyes will feel much better rather quickly! Dr. Patel’s Recommendations Learn the 20-20-20 rule. This is the first defense against DES and is widely recommended by optometrists and ophthalmologists. It’s pretty simple: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and stare at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This reduces stress on your eye and can combat the negative effects of digital devices. Get routine eye exams. Regular eye exams are also helpful as your eye doctor can recommend remedies, including a specific brand of eye drops. Use proper eyewear. Eyeglasses or contact lenses prescribed for general use may not be adequate for computer work. Lenses prescribed to meet the unique visual demands of computer viewing may be needed.

Modify your workstation. It’s important that your computer is set up at the proper work distance. Use a high-resolution monitor to avoid squinting. Make sure you have proper lighting above you and minimize the brightness of the digital screen to an acceptable level. Remember to blink. To minimize your chances of developing dry eye when using a computer, make an effort to blink frequently. Reduced blink rate dries out our eyes, which contributes to DES. Using eye drops or artificial tears will moisten your eyes and can help mitigate negative effects of particularly dry or itchy eyes. DR VISHAL PATEL attended the University of Georgia for his undergraduate degree and then the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 2011. During the course of his graduate career he underwent extensive training at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Woolfson Eye Institute specializing in ocular disease, laser and cataract surgery.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRULY be a locally-owned, family business? Few know better than Chris Sedgwick and Michele Sedgwick who for 25+ years have blessed Atlanta's northside communities with consistent and superior dining experiences. They take great pride in leading a team of talented, creative and committed individuals who bring personality, passion, great food and big smiles to the tables. Coming (very) Soon! 7 Acre BarNgrill - SRG's newest concept is slated to open this fall in the familiar building at Birmingham Crossroads, which used to be home to Wilbur & Rudy’s Farmtable. As Matilda’s Gallery and live music venue relocates to the adjacent property (just approved by city council), 7 Acre BarNgrill appears as if it will be yet another successful restaurant to add to the Sedgwicks' list of local favorites. The brainchild of Chris Sedgwick, front-of-house man Mix McCrory, and executive chef Jacob Ihara, 7 Acre BarNgrill will feature a 93 seat family-centric space. The menu is simple, but brilliant: comfort foods, a full bar, homemade pies, real “farm to fork” ingredients the locals expect in Milton. The twist is Ihara’s unique style. Expect to see authentic ramen and local, fresh,

hand-crafted cuisine from his kitchen. You’ll enjoy dishes like Pan Seared Ribeye with miso butter and silky whipped cauliflower; Crispy Fried Peking Duck with Jake’s Thai eggplant, carrot, sundried tomato, kumquat hash, plum sauce and celery root tortillas; and Miso Ramen (on the cover!) with crispy pork belly, pickled lotus blossoms, yakisoba noodles, green onions, nori and soft boiled egg.

Back to the Beginning It all began in 1991 with Van Gogh’s, which was Chris Sedgwick and Michele Sedgwick’s flagship restaurant in Roswell. Through lots of work, community support, a top notch team of front and back of house professionals and a creative, inventive menu, Van Gogh’s had a successful two decades year run before the Sedgwicks renamed and rebranded it as Bistro VG, ultimately selling their 'baby' to a new owner last year. Once Van Gogh's took off, the Sedgwicks did what many first-time restaurant owners hope to do: they opened a second restaurant, Vinny’s on Windward. For the 25 years since, this Italian powerhouse has served business professionals, couples, families and anyone desiring a casual fine-dining experience with consistent, attentive service. Vinny's had continued to be Fall 2018 -23

recognized as, “Excellent,” by Zagat.

Entrees include tuna, beef carpaccio, wood oven pizza, rack of lamb, and veal scallopini; you’ll find the delicious tiramisu and the extensive wine list pairs perfectly with their range of dishes. Some of the items – the veal tortelloni and Vinny’s lasagna, for instance – have been on the menu for two decades. Executive chef, Armando Campos has created these local favorites and customers would revolt if they were taken away. Chris Sedgwick’s 80-yearold mother, Jan, is a constant fixture at Vinny’s. You'll see Jan working with the staff to ensure interacting with customers meets the restaurant’s high standards for gracious service and delicious cuisine. Two years later, Theo’s Brothers Bakery opened to much fanfare and is still one of the most popular bakeries in north Atlanta. They handcraft more than 20 artisan breads on a daily basis; in fact, everything in the bakery is made inhouse. Margarito and Yolanda Montez, head bakers, have been kneading and baking bread since the bakery opened. Theo’s provides bread for restaurants in Alpharetta and Milton and can be found every Saturday morning at the Alpharetta Farmers Market. In 2005, the Atlanta tradition PURE Taqueria made its debut in downtown Alpharetta, tucked (colorfully) away on Roswell Street. According to Chris, their love of Mexican food inspired them to introduce “a better margarita, better ambience and better quality of Mexican food” than what they could find. Widely successful, PURE now offers franchises which also are experiencing the same level of community love as the first PURE. PURE produces authentic cuisine improved by the chefs, including house - created tortillas using the traditional “nixtamel” method - all experienced by

guests in a fun, hip atmosphere where strangers turn into friends and attractive, tasty dishes never stop coming from the kitchen. Continuing the family theme, the Sedgwicks' daughter, Peyton, is working in the marketing department of their PURE franchise company. Three short years later, The Union sprouted up on scene at the corner of Providence Road and Freemanville, in Milton. Chris created this restaurant concept from his heart, remembering his childhood home in Pittsburgh and echoing the 60s and 70s in its eclectic décor. Its menu, however, is all family; the recipes for the dishes are straight from Jan's kitchen, like the local favorite Grandma Sedgwick’s Spaghetti. They also serve wood fired pizzas, seafood, salads, coffee and donuts – and Milton families show up regularly for more. Three years ago, the Sedgwicks opened MADE Kitchen and Cocktails a few doors down from PURE Taqueria in historic downtown Alpharetta. Desiring something a little different, Chris landed on Spanish tapas - small plates; and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better paella or charcuterie around. The fully stocked bar includes a great variety of Spanish wines and beer not easily found in other local restaurants. Diners are always delighted by the unique decor, which leans to the ‘old world’ with its steel fixtures, polished concrete and 150-year-old heart of pine beams (sourced

from an old cotton mill in South Carolina). Highlights of MADE's menu include seasonal vegetables, oysters grilled on hardwood coals, shrimp, croquettes, and some delightfully unexpected salads. Though MADE K&C focuses on small plates, it also offers a selection of entrees, including whole roasted fish. The Sedgwicks have been in the area since 1980 and have seen trends, fads and restaurants come on the scene and then go. Yet, they’ve held onto their visions for almost 30 years. How is that? “Alpharetta has a good mix of businesses yet is still a solid family market,” he explained. "With Avalon coming in and large businesses relocating here, there are more people, which means more restaurants and nightlife, of all kinds." Milton, on the other hand, is solidly family-friendly. “I believe our locations for The Union and 7Acres BarNGrill are perfect because of both restaurants' proximity to where our guests live, so they don’t have to travel too far to go out and grab a bite. It’s convenient and they don’t have to cook and clean up at home," he added. Time and time again, it comes back to the people. Each of the Sedgwick’s restaurants have seen births, marriages, graduations and anniversaries of their regular customers – they are just naturally places families go to celebrate. Fall 2018 -25

MODERN FARMHOUSE By Claire Murphy Katie DeRario, Principal Designer of Hart & Lock Design collaborated with Cory Regan of Trademark Building Co. and Architect Charles Cameron on this stunning modern farmhouse in Milton.

BRIGHT WHITES, RICH WOOD TONES AND subtle details give this charming, contemporary farmhouse in Milton the necessary depth it required to capture a historic feeling in the newly built home.

the overall layout of home is open and spacious, which is desireable for families today; but at the same time, each living space is designed to be well-defined, distinct, like a craftsman's home would have been 100 years ago.

Katie DeRario, Principal Designer of Milton-based Hart & Lock Design seems to have nailed it with this project. The design elements create contradiction that works well for the "modern farmhouse" objective. For instance,

The dining room is open in the center of the main level, but it's given subtle boundaries, which are defined by its own shiplap walls and a dramatic (yet delicate) lighting fixture. Katie carefully chose unique lighting fixtures for

every room, which gives each its purpose. Classical craftsman-style trim and moldings throughout the home - painted bright white - comfortably frame each space, while deliberate pops of dark wood contrast just enough to keep things charming. Dark stained barn-style doors command attention and then immediately convey that we can relax. Materials such as brick pavers, hardwood flooring throughout, reclaimed beams, as well as custom cabinetry, detailed tilework, 5-panel doors and a special antique door to the pantry meld as if they were always meant to be together. Having been designing for over 10 years, she launched Hart & Lock Design 5 years ago to assist clients with cutom home construction, basement completions and full service interiors. With a background in ďŹ ne arts,

experience in construction project management and a LEED professional accreditation, Katie is well-versed in all facets of the design/build industry, which makes her a natural and collaborative partner to architects, builders and homeowners. Katie adds, "Our goal is to be with our clients from conception to blueprint to placing the ďŹ nal pillow on the sofa at install. Building can be intimidating; and it is our goal to provide a seamless process and a beautiful, functional result for our clients." Katie, her husband, daughter, son and two pups live here in Milton. ARTS & CULTURE

One of the presenters at the 2018 Milton Literary Festival is Kate T. Parker, who published Strong is the New Pretty photo book that went viral.

The Milton Literary Festival is excited to be returning for its fourth consecutive year on November 10 at Milton’s City Hall complex from 9am to 5pm - we are all invited to come out to meet local and national authors, storytellers and journalists. The day is family-friendly, includes hands-on activities and features live music. The objective of the festival is to unite and celebrate a diverse community who share in the love of the written and spoken word, so that all generations are inspired, educated, entertained, and transformed by the magic of stories. The Executive Planning Committee announced the inaugural Young Authors Creative Writing contest, open to all middle and high school students living or residing in Milton. A cash scholarship for the grand prize entries, and significant gift certificate awards for the runners up are offered by several local businesses. The 2018 honoree is New York Timesbestselling author and Milton resident, Karen White, who will be presenting the

award. “We may have the next JK Rowling, John Green, or Hemmingway in our midst,” Ms. White said. One of the presenters at the festival is Kate T. Parker, whose Strong Is the New Pretty photo series has led to collaborations with brands like Athleta, Kellogg's, Disney and Oxygen. The project has also inspired Kate to launch a philanthropic arm of Strong Is the New Pretty, partnering with organizations like Girls on the Run and The Bully Project that invests in girls' health and education. When she's not photographing, Kate can be found coaching her daughters' soccer teams. She lives with her family in Atlanta, Georgia. Kate will be speaking about a follow-up project: a guided journal written for girls to spark their confidence and creativity, which is illustrated with simple line drawings and Kate's unforgettable photographs of girls fearlessly being themselves — inviting girls to revel in their own strength, individuality and joy.

From Farm to Table to Fork to Mouth Authentic Italian Cuisine LA CASA ITALIAN RESTAURANT (farm-to-table before farm-to-table was cool)

La Casa has naturally always predominantly used fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. Chef/Owner Pasquale Cardamuro believes a dish is only as good as the freshness and quality of its ingredients.

W

WITH ALL OF THE NEW RESTAURANTS opening up in and around Milton and downtown Alpharetta (and getting all the press!), we were curious how that is being received by downtown’s ‘tried and true’ establishments. La Casa Italian Grill has been located in a charming historic house in downtown Alpharetta for seven years. It’s staying power rests with chef/owner Pasquale Cardamuro’s commitment to authenticity in his Italian dishes, which has resulted in regular customers and excellent reviews. What’s new is La Casa is letting the community know they are a ‘farm-to-table, chef-driven’ restaurant, although regular customers already knew this - they’ve always used fresh, local, seasonal ingredients and have grown their own tomatoes, herbs and peppers, as well as had their greens delivered fresh daily - but they never felt the need to promote this because having been trained in culinary school in Naples, Italy where he grew up - it’s just what they naturally assume chefs do - cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients. La Casa has taken this a step further by focusing much more on fresh seafood, even sometimes driving down to Florida to get shrimp right from the boats. The large, heated outdoor deck is great for happy hours or cocktails before being seated and has been named “best patio dining” in "Best of North Atlanta." Dining at La Casa is more than just going out to eat - it’s a culinary experience… the consistency, colors, textures, diversity and harmony of flavors stand out with every bite. A menu favorite is the Italian Classic Lasagna (pic-

tured above) which is homemade with veal bolognese sauce reminding diners of home and Sunday dinners at Nona's. Choose a good bottle of Italian Chianti to complement this dish. The Shrimp Fra diavolo (Italian for ‘devil monk’) features jumbo shrimp and spicy marinara with linguine. The thin strands of pasta soak up this spicy tomato sauce to form a flavorful mound punctuated with shrimp. Choose a bottle of a refreshing, fruity, white pinot grigio to contrast the heat of the red-pepper flakes. The restaurant organizes wine dinners with gourmet meals paired with wines for each course. An expert wine representative is present to explain the different wine regions and content, as well as answer any questions. Among locals, La Casa is known for hosting small to medium sized corporate and family events because the space is elegant yet homey, with three separate dining areas which allow for privacy. www.lacasaitaliangrill.com | (770) 609-6311 37 Old Roswell St, historic downtown Alpharetta Fall 2018 -33
