There’s music playing upstairs or on the deck every weekend, starting with Open Mic Night every Thursday. Grub Gastro Pub owners Dave and Terry Fast believe live music naturally goes with beer and food .

> LIVE MUSIC EVERY WEEKEND <

eat drink be blessed

THE GRUB GASTRO PUB IS a go-to hangout for locals, with friendly bartenders and a hip atmosphere. The owners express their love of the Roswell community by featuring chef-driven cuisine, local and regional craft beer, large wine selection, specialty drinks and lots of live music to ensure memorable experiences for guests. Live music is very important to the owners at The Grub who feel strongly good, local, live music is a ‘must-have’ in the hospitality business. Terry and (chef) Dave Fast, familiar faces in the local restaurant industry, were intrigued when they learned the 1090 Alpharetta Street building was available - its large deck, separate special events room upstairs with a second deck, two fantastic bars, general ‘fine casual’ ambience, fantastic curb appeal and location all contributed to the decision to open The Grub Gastro Pub. The placed felt like it had been waiting for just the right concept - a chef-driven gastropub with a lot of live music. Just a couple of years later, The Grub has become a regular favorite for locals, beer enthusiasts, discriminating diners and music lovers. Derek Ferwerda (www.theguitarroom. org) heads up Open Mic Night every Thursday, which brings out some really great talent; and the Fasts’ insist on offering live music every Friday and Saturday from 7 to

10pm either upstairs or out on the deck. Everyone gets a kick out of “Trivioke” (a trivia - karaoke hybrid) on Tuesdays at 7:30pm, which has become a serious competition among regulars. The deck is dog-friendly --- and there’s even a special menu crafted just for the pups! Televisions are strategically placed throughout to ensure none of their guests misses a game. Happy Hour includes lots of activity and thier brunch on the weekends includes a Bloody Mary Bar and a $3 mimosa and Bellini special. We hear a menu quick favorite is The Grub’s Dogs of Summer, with two grilled BallPark hot dogs crowned with caramelized onions, roasted red bellpeppers, melted cheddar and creamy coleslaw. Spiced up, beer-brined wings and hand-battered chicken tenders are year-round favorites, and the specialty items wow the pickiest palates and include dishes like Shrimp & Grits, Grub-Eye Steak and a Farm-to-Table Vegan Plate. The Fasts insist attentive, professional service from a friendly, competent staff are the keys to their success. Treat people well, learn their names, and serve up great food, drinks and live music -- and customers will return again and again. www.gastropubroswell.com 13

CLASSIC RECALL

Men in Blues is an energetic Atlanta wedding/special events band that has been playing “funky classic rock ’n’ roll, soul, R&B, funk, blues, oldies, and country.” The Atlanta Society of Entertainers voted the band the “Best Blues Band” and “Best Overall Band” three years in a row. Creative Loafing readers voted them “Best Local Blues Act” three times, “Best Cover Band”, and twice the “Best Local R&B Soul Act.” They’ve opened for Little River Band, Sara Evans, Johnny Winter, James Cotton and Big Bill Morganfield. One reviewer writes, “They especially did a good job of reading the room and mixing up the set list in order to keep everyone on the dance floor all night.”

TYLER NEAL BAND www.facebook.com/tylernealband Atlanta-based singer, songwriter and guitarist, Tyler Neal, spent two years in “the last band Colonel Bruce Hampton ever led.” At Northside Tavern, Hampton invited Tyler to sit in, saying, “Come play with us tomorrow. Bring a bongo and a tambourine.” Soon, he joined as lead guitarist for Col. Bruce Hampton & The Madrid Express. After Hampton’s death in 2017, Tyler was joined by Yonrico (drums) and Madrid Express’ Frahner Joseph (bass) in working on their first album, produced by Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell of Tedeschi Trucks Band. He says, “Songs are a way to connect with the things and people that mean the most to me.” He hopes to reach others in the same way that Stevie Wonder, Derek Trucks and John Coltrane reached him. www.30075life.com | issue 25

From the Earth Brewing Co. Roswell’s Only Brewpub is VERY Committed to Live Music

C

chef-driven, locally sourced cuisine, house-brewed and craft beer and live music

Conversations about providing the city of Roswell with a new dining concept began in 2015, and were quickly followed by conceptualizing, pooling resources, finding a location, drawing up blueprints, completing the build-out and hiring a gracious staff. From the Earth Brewing Company opened its doors in November of 2017, and Roswell residents have responded affirmatively with terrific reviews and repeated patronage. Two months later, in January of 2018, FTE was voted 2017’s Best New Brewpub in Georgia by thousands of participants in a poll commissioned by Beer Guys Radio. Later that year, an article featured in Beer Advocate honored FTE as one of “50 of the Best New Breweries.” Interviewed by Beer Advocate, Tim recalled the accompanying write-up, which was very complimentary, with judges writing, “An accomplished Atlanta fine-dining restaurateur, Tim Stevens parlayed his expertise into From the Earth Brewing in Roswell, a brewpub with a menu even the most critical gourmand would appreciate.” And then early this year (2019), FTE placed third in the nation of all brewpubs throughout the U.S. in a top-rated readers’ poll coordinated by 10Best and USAToday. The hyper-locally sourced cuisine and wide variety of well-balanced craft beers tie right into the vision Tim had for the brewpub from its earliest conception. He

22

believes there is an unwritten obligation restaurants have to do everything they can to source their products as locally as possible. He looks at this as coming full circle– from the earth and then back to the earth– using the freshest, most sustainably-raised ingredients possible and finding ways to give back. FTE gets creative supporting its local food partners. Tim says, “One way we support our food partners is by giving our spent grain from brewing our beer to local farmers to help feed their cattle and animals.” They also incorporate some of that spent grain into their house-made breads and even into making dog-friendly treats for their four-legged customers! “We want to become a part of this community in every way possible,” Tim adds. Tim was 15 when he started waiting tables in an upscale retirement community in his hometown of Clearwater, FL. Later he moved to Atlanta and gained tremendously beneficial restaurant experience working for Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, initially at the Buckhead Diner and followed by General Manager of Nava, where he is grateful to have met world-renowned and award-winning chef, Kevin Rathbun (before Kevin was cool). The two maintained their friendship while both were essentially ‘growing up’ in the Atlanta restaurant scene. Tim always had great admiration for Kevin’s drive and his authentic passion for good food. www.30075life.com | issue 25

Chef-driven Cuisine | Craft Beer | Live Music Venue

When Tim shared his vision for the From the Earth Brewing Company concept, naturally Kevin and his wife, Melissa were all for it and invested early on.

rich with bands and musicians, and most people in Roswell know now that FTE is the go-to destination for music lovers on a regular basis.

“We have always trusted Tim’s judgement and expertise in the industry, so becoming investors was not a tough decision at all. We want to see him succeed doing what he loves to do,” said Rathbun.

The menu reads like a page from the old Gourmet magazine, with customer favorites including Brussels sprouts, which come with a house fermented powder hot sauce, Asher blue cheese and bacon, and the FTE Double Stack with pimento cheese, bacon jam, arugula, tomato, tobacco onions and white barbecue sauce. Guests also tell us the Seared Scallops, Crabcakes, Fish & Chips and Fried Chicken are excellent choices. Next time, we plan to order the Soup of Yesterday, because it’s always better the next day, right?

Veteran Brewmaster and SweetWater Brewing Company’s co-founder, Kevin McNerney, was instrumental in the design and setup phase of the concept as well, contributing his expertise of all things beer; and he continues advising as FTE’s Head Brewing Consultant. Since opening their doors, FTE has had live music every Thursday, hosted large corporate events, invited a few fellow local breweries to share taps alongside whatever talented brewmaster Jamie Parker has crafted on-site, and participated in ‘all things local.’ Although most of the locally-generated attention and buzz has focused primarily on the craft brewing aspect of FTE, there is so much more to their grassroots success than great beer. Executive chef Heath Miles, pastry chef Palma Arthur and the rest of the kitchen staff collectively prioritize serving dishes that use only the finest, freshest ingredients taken directly ‘from the earth.’ In addition to craft beer, 40-plus varieties of wine and custom cocktails, From the Earth hosts live music every Thursday, welcoming local and regional touring bands to their brewpub; and on the last Sunday of every month, the Jeff Mosier Ensemble treats guests to beautiful afternoon events. They also host musical performances on select Fridays and Saturdays, welcoming some bigger name bands that may require a cover charge, and go as far as setting up a stage out front for guests to enjoy. The staff has put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the calendar is consistently www.30075life.com | issue 25

JON OSWALD (www.jonoswald.com) Raised in central Ohio, Jon singing and picking for over 40 years, and toured nationally with such artists as Jerry Reed, Tanya Tucker, The Outfield, Taylor Dayne, Robert Palmer, Meatloaf and many others. A move to East Nashville in the late 90's sealed his fate as a musician. Playing in Music City for 10 years, Jon was featured at The Bluebird Cafe, The Family Wash and various clubs on the Broadway circuit. He says Nashville still feels like home. His kids are there and it has his heart. The exposure to the likes of Willie Nelson, Tommy Emmanuel, John Hiatt and Kris Kristofferson in intimate venues added a new dimension to Jon’s music. Living in Atlanta for several years now has Jon re-inspired by troubadours like Jason Isbell, Parker Millsap, Tyler Childers and John Fullbright, and he has focused on live shows and the release of his album ‘Hung Up Wet’ last month (April 2019). “ I play a lot of live gigs so my chops are up. I quit drinking a handful of years ago and my voice and songwriter are better. Music is peace to me and that's a central theme of 'Hung Up Wet.”

Musicians and Bands

PLAY it Forward IN 2014, TOM LADOW HAD AN IDEA, which he hoped may help alleviate some frustration musicians and bands who are often asked by civic and charitable organizations to donate their performances complimentary to support worthy causes. A friend of and a musician himself (keyboard), he decided to flip the script a little so bands and musicians could choose which organizations and events they would be able to perform for little or no cost. Rather than organizations reaching out directly to the artists, they would come through Tom’s nonprofit organization, Atlanta Plays it Forward. (www.atlantaplaysitforward.org) Atlanta Plays It Forward is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing high quality musical entertainment and event related services at little or no cost (or value-added) to pre-qualified charities and causes. They maintain a large pool of professional musicians, entertainers, event managers and other event service providers who are willing to perform or provide ser26

vices at reduced fees under a set of circumstances and benefits determined individually for each event. The unique organization has created concert series in a number of venues, offering unique, family-friendly, professional musical performances, which are supportive of a local charity. They completely manage and promote the shows, including all talent, content, marketing, ticketing, set-up, parking, seating, clean-up, security, etc. The current show genres vary from jazz, rock, musical revue, dance, etc. and are usually picnic style, meaning concertgoers may bring their own picnic. Tickets are either for table seating (tables, chairs provided) or lawn seating (bring your own lawn chair). Tom’s Roswell-based organization was the force that launched “ALIVE in Roswell,” considered the largest and longest running street party in North Atlanta. Additionally, Atlanta Plays it Forward books all the music for Roswell’s Music on the Hill and Food Truck Fridays concert series. www.30075life.com | issue 25

REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE Distance Address Distance to Canton Street + Address

ROSWELL IS CERTAINLY ALIVE with the ‘sound of music,’ and part of the reason residents, business owners and musicians find downtown Roswell so appealing is its walkability - the ability to stroll, shop, dine and be entertained (often by live music) within a short radius without getting in your car. Walkability is also an aesthetic - an area where people feel comfortable and interested in their surroundings. Sidewalks, crime rates, people on the street, traffic, interesting architecture and green spaces are all factors in determining a place’s ‘walkability.’ Beautiful spring and summer weather help, too! Walk Score (www.walkscore.com) was founded in 2007 to promote walkable neighborhoods. You can check your own home’s walk score and easily see the walk score for any property for sale at www.BrightHomesAtlanta.com. Studies show people are unwilling to walk more than ¼ mile to a destination if a car is readily available. An exception is in highly walkable areas like NYC or Savannah, where longer walks are broken up frequently by interesting sights and sounds. Windward Parkway (a 29 walk score) is lined on both sides with sidewalks, yet doesn’t have a high “walk appeal.” If your home has a low walk score, then give us a call if you decide to move to a more walkable location!

REMODELING EXPECTATIONS In an industry rift with stereotypes of lax or uncommunicative contractors, this local, father/son team - Jon and Jack Spicer - are raising the bar on homeowners’ expectations one customer at a time with Kitchen Tune-Up. By Danielle Bartling

THE KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF THE HOME, a place where families and friends engage in quality time and good meals. It is a gathering space that should bring joy, encourage conversation and capture the essence of a household. Refreshing your kitchen’s look (and function) is one of the best investments you can make, and the process doesn’t have to be expensive, lengthy or disruptive. In Fall of last year, father-son team Jack and Jon Spicer embarked on a project to co-own a business together and they ultimately decided on Kitchen Tune-Up, a franchise with more than three decades in the industry and 170 franchisees, or “Tunies,” as they call each other. Jack and Jon, referring to themselves with a laugh as “Baby Tunies,” opened their independent franchise in February 2019 and were initially attracted to the profound sense of community and professionalism at the Kitchen Tune-Up home office. “They are very strong, supportive and knowledgeable of the industry,” said Jack. “Even though it’s a big operation, they make it feel like family.” After training in Aberdeen, South Dakota, this father and son brought expertise to their own southern territory, Roswell and East Cobb. As a former physician, Jack applies his customer service skills, and has always been keen on do-it-yourself projects and remodeling. In his recent home improvement repertoire, he has finished three basements, independently and up to code, including all of the electrical, plumbing and tiling. His son, Jon, is a teacher by JON & JACK SPICER trade who found

solidarity in his father’s passion for remodeling. In business, their strengths complement each other well. Jack is skilled at marketing, sales and client relationships, whereas Jon has a management background and is adaptable to any situations that may arise. Jack is also grateful for Jon’s “millennial expertise” when it comes to social media and current design trends. The Kitchen Tune-Up slogan is, “Remodeling your expectations.” The franchise distinguishes themselves with trust points like customer service, timeliness, respect for client homes, and open communication. They offer several options for revamping a tired or outdated kitchen, including – in ascending budget order – the standard “Tune-Up,” cabinet painting, replacing doors, refacing and completely replacing the cabinets. Refacing is their “claim to fame,” which is cost-effective and involves new drawers and door fronts, matching veneers to existing cabinets and all of it carries a “brand-new” look. Two criteria must be met in order to reface – you must be satisfied with your current layout, and the existing cabinet boxes must be sturdy and in good shape. Each new cabinet employs soft-close technology and comes with many design options and accessories including knobs, pulls, Lazy Susans and roll-out trays. White cabinetry is the easiest to update and is a popular choice, according to Jack. Despite the name, Kitchen Tune-Up also applies their core tenets to bathroom remodeling. Most incredible is their ability to complete a standard-size project in no time – between three and five days! 33

Birdtalker

BIRDTALKER (www.birdtalkermusic.com) Birdtalker is made up of Zack and Dani Green, Andy Hubright, Brian Seligman, and Jesse Baker. Zack and Dani were married in 2012 and soon after their wedding tried writing a couple songs together. Andy, a talented drummer friend, started beating on stuff while Zack and Dani played them., and it sounded good. While these 3 were

playing the songs at Shakespeare in the Park one August afternoon, Brian became interested in adding his immense talent to the mix as well and began playing along with mandolin and guitar. It sounded even better. Soon, another talented friend and fan, Jesse, began lending his bass sounds to the band. It is the combination of each member's specific offerings that gives Birdtalker its life and sounds. The Seven Sons

THE SEVEN SONS

In 2010, this band originally came together in Atlanta as the backing unit for singer Otis Redding III. The sound was old-school and funky modern soul. Later, they evolved into more jazz elements, but kept their Southern roots and taut, danceable compositions. Weaving jazz-funk and Afrobeat into their sound, they wrote and play individual solos, chanted vocals and interlocking grooves. They toured the Southeast as an opening act for Antibalas, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Rebirth Brass Band and many more. In 2013, their debut album, Thickens Upon Standing, was released to critical acclaim, and in 2017, ‘Whats for Breakfast’, their first full length vinyl LP, was released. They’ll be playing the Roswell Live Music’fest at Gypsy Rose, June 28.

Formed as a pickup band in Roswell in 2011 with four friends who met on the baseball field as dads coaching their sons’ team. Between them, they have seven sons. Their children were in school and played youth sports with each other; and the four spent a lot of time talking about music and sports. One simple jam session got them hooked and ‘The Sons’ have been delivering their high-energy style to local breweries, pubs and restaurants ever since.

This year’s competition includes 46 participants from around the city, all of which have created and will launch a unique alcoholic or non-alcoholic specialty drink not already featured on their menus. During the two-month event, patrons will be able to rate each sip they try on the Summer Sippin’ app or at SummerSippin.com. At the end of the event, based on the drink ratings, one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic drink will both be crowned “The Best Sip in Roswell 2019” in their respective categories. In its fourth year, Summer Sippin’ is one of the industry support programs created by Roswell Inc, the economic and business development organization for the City of Roswell. “Summer is one of our favorite times of the year because we get to celebrate and promote the creativity and innovation of our food and beverage businesses through Summer Sippin’.” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. “This event not only supports our hospitality industry, which is one of Roswell’s largest, it also positions us as a destination for other restaurant and craft beverage entrepreneurs.”

(www.adam-klein.com) ADAM KLEIN & THE WILDFIRES An Atlanta-via-Athens, GA -based singer/songwriter troubadour, Adam Klein’s music blends Americana, rustic country folk, folk-rock, and West African Mande music. He solo/duo, with his band, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires, or with his American roots-meets-West-African-roots project under his Peace Corps name in Mali, Lassine Kouyate. For Low Flyin’ Planes, his seventh album, Klein teamed up again with his longtime producer Bronson Tew at Dial Back Sound. “He’s a close friend and a genius engineer and producer whose role in shaping the sounds and textures of these records and bringing my songs to life can’t be overstated. ’You set them up; I’ll knock them down’, he’s said about our musical partnership. And it’s true- these albums are just as much his handiwork as they are mine,” Adam explained. The other two albums in this so-called trilogy include 2013’s Sky Blue DeVille and the 2015 release Archer’s Arrow. “To me, Low Flyin’ Planes is the sonic follow-up to Sky Blue DeVille. I think it’s a natural progression.” @ Gypsy Rose

A 2016 tour included a command performance at the Whitehouse. Originally from Memphis, Toni Byrd’s latest CD release, Toni Sings Natalie featuring Toni and her Big Band’s tribute to Natalie Cole, is now available. “There is something about dropping a needle that makes your heart be By Regina Barkley

IT’S NOT UNUSUAL TO SEE Mojo Vinyl Records’ owner Rand Cabus at many of Roswell’s business networking events, social gatherings and civic organization’s monthly meetings, and he seems to know ‘everybody’ around town. He has a cynic’s dry humor; and at the same time it’s clear he loves people and doesn’t take himself (or life) too seriously. Never garnering for attention, he instead hangs back and observes, cracks a witty comment or two only heard by those within earshot, and then makes things happen without fanfare. Rand successfully spearheaded the development and launch of the Historic Roswell Business Association’s mobile-friendly website, www.exploreroswell.com, which has helped to promote economic prosperity in the Historic district; and he was unanimously selected by the outgoing board of HRBA to be its Board Chairman.

Mojo Vinyl is an independent record store established in 2011 in historic Roswell that buys and sells new and used records, as well as Audio-Technica, Music Hall and Pioneer turntables. It’s a cozy, local haven for vinyl enthusiasts and curious browsers and offers an impressive selection of new and used, original and reissued classics. Rand insists vinyl provides the purest listening experience, therefore his tagline “Listen Naked” reflects this natural, pure sound sentiment. After 8 years, Rand recently moved the business a quarter of a mile away from it’s tucked away spot on Webb Street to a cool bungalow-type building with road-frontage on Alpharetta Street — and lots of free parking. Record Store Day, the global celebration of the culture of the record store, takes place annually in April. It’s one of Mojo Vinyl’s biggest days of the year. He opens early to a crowd of folks waiting to get inside. Die-hards determined to get first dibs on RSD limited edition offerings camp out in order to be first in line. This year on RSD, (April 13) Rand coordinated the first annual ‘Mojopalooza’ in collaboration with Gypsy Rose Music. Perfect weather smiled on live sets by Project-Detour, Nate Nelson, the Entertainment Crackers, and The Seven Sons on Mojo’s new outdoor stage. food truck filled with tasty tacos, Variant Brewing offered their craft beer, and Om Grown and Monkeyfist featured really ‘freaky’ art. The old album art associated with vinyl triggers memories for baby boomers who grew up listening to records; but Rand said the attraction of vinyl records actually goes beyond any sense of nostalgia. It delivers an authenticity virtually impossible to duplicate digitally and that’s why it is attracting younger audiences today — although they don’t have the memories, they do crave authentic, offline experiences. www.mojovinyrecords.com

MAINTAIN YOUR MAXIMUS The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the body, and that means there are so many benefits to getting your butt in gear.

By Robert Haddocks LADIES FEAR THE JIGGLY ARMS and muffin tops. Guys obsess over bulging triceps and traps. But before worrying about any of those, pay homage to the monster of all muscles - THE GLUTES. Few, if any, muscles have more impact on your physical well-being than your glutes. Why is that? Because the gluteus maximus is the biggest single muscle of your body (not the quads, which are four separate muscles. Given their size and strength, your glutes are built to handle a heavy workload. They, along with the hips, are the hub of all movement. Problems arise when your glutes are lazy or dormant because other muscles kick in to perform jobs that they're not designed to do. And because your glutes are at the center of your body, they're crucial to function for both the lower and upper body. (Jiggly arms, while unappealing, might affect your elbow, but not much more. But, if that butt starts lagging you're far more likely to experience back pain and have knee trouble, just to list a few. You're also more prone to falls, which, of course, are of increasing concern as we get older. Not to mention this undeniable truth: no one wants a droopy bottom. But it's so much more than that. Think of your glutes as brakes and shock absorbers. Every step or stride that you 48

take, upon foot impact your glutes serve as shock absorbers and then propel you into the next step. Every time you slow down or bend over, your glutes play a key role in decelerating forward motion. From my 15 years as a personal trainer, I can tell you this; this: the great majority of people that I encounter with chronic back or knee issues have one thing in common: Weak glutes. So, ladies and gentlemen, get to those squats and deadlifts, which are staples to developing strong, healthy glutes. If those exercises are painful, glute bridges, side planks with knees bent and banded hip abduction exercises are good places to start. Cable or banded kickbacks are other options. But whatever you do, make sure you're firing up those glutes, both the maximus and the medius. They'll take you far, improving your posture, overall appearance and performance while reducing your chance of injury. ROBERT HADDOCKS A personal trainer at Sports Fitness Experience, Robert became involved in the fitness industry over 15 years ago after overcoming a serious back injury, which doctors had told him would require surgery. He has multiple certifications and specializes in corrective exercise and athletic training. Reach out at robfit34@yahoo.com

JULIE GRIBBLE (www.juliegribble.net) Roswell-based Julie Gribble started making music while living in L.A. saying she brought out that dusty guitar and spent hours every day trying to figure it out because, “I’m not a chick who can be told I can’t do something.” Julie continues, “After a few open mics, I got offered my first gig, made my first record, got signed with a label, and did my 1st tour.” Julie performed 3X on The Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson, as well as The Tyra Banks Show. She finished her 6th record, Crimson Sky, traveling around the country hearing people’s stories and adds, If I’m not playing music, I’m not happy. Julie finishes with, “Cheers to a good dream, a shot of whiskey, some laughs and a hell of a lot of hard work!” www.30075life.com | issue 25

JEFF MOSIER (www.revjeffmosier.com) Scruggs’-style banjo picker, The Rev. is one of the earliest music pioneers to merge bluegrass instruments and traditional tunes with rock ’n’ roll, has shared the stage with legends such as Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Col. Mosier’s superb vocal mastery and unique banjo picking combine to deliver a special experience highlighting his original tunes as well as familiar traditional songs in novel arrangements. Whether traveling through acoustic ballads, thought-provoking and humorous banter, or high-energy bluegrass, each performance a musical journey sending the listener on a foot-tapping, mind-bending and body-grooving jaunt down the road and back home again.

DAVID CHILDERS (www.davidchilders.com) Singer-songwriter David Childers is the proverbial study in contradictions. A resident of Mount Holly, North Carolina, a former high-school football player, a good ol’ Southern boy, a well-read poet and painter who cites Chaucer and Kerouac as influences, fell in love with folk as a teen, listens to jazz and opera, and fed his family practicing law before turning switching to his creative passions. His album Run Skeleton Run, is filled with songs. Scott Avett contributes to four tracks, and Avett’s bassist Bob Crawford co-executive-produced the effort with label head Dolph Ramseur. 6 years ago, four guys from Roswell, Marietta and Alpharetta started a band to pay tribute to some of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, alternative rock and country songs ever made– calling themselves ‘Project Detour.’ They’ve played public and private venues and celebrated with artists like the Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Zac Brown. The band creates and performs unique mashups of classic tunes while showcasing current songs from artists like Bruno Mars and DNCE. Their varied set list gets everyone on the dance floor. Dean Gottschalk (drummer) grew up in Cobb, Jason Willard (singer) in Birmingham, Robert “G” Gettys (keyboard/sax) in South Carolina, Kevin French (bass) in Delaware, Steve Adkins (guitar) in West VA/Nebraska, and Mike ‘Z’ Zahariades in Connecticut. They cover rock, country, funk and more but specialize in creative mashups. An original song, ‘Give Me Peace’, is a tribute to breast cancer survivors, and written by their guitar player Mike, for his wife Deb. PD has played ‘Record Store Day’ for several years for Rand Cabus, owner at Mojo Vinyl Records, and they performed the 5th anniversary show at Houck’s. Half the band considers Roswell ‘home,’ and they’re psyched to be playing Roswell Live Music’fest at the end of June, outside at Mojo Vinyl.

Local Business Profile: Seadragon Songhouse By Regina Barkley

C

COURTNEY CUTCHINS IS THE FOUNDER and voice coach of Seadragon Songhouse here in Roswell. For nearly 15 years, she’s been sharing her passion for music education, helping clients learn to sing their songs and love their voices – from Seattle to New York City and now, Roswell. With a Master of Music degree in Jazz Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, her coaching is informed by Somatic Voicework™ methods, as well as her experiences as a performing artist and educator. Her focus is on CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) styles such as pop, rock, jazz, folk and original songs. Courtney believes in trusting the client’s creative voice to guide each session, encouraging their authentic and unique self to shine through. Seadragon Songhouse was founded on the vision to help people free themselves from self-limiting beliefs about their creative voices and artistic goals, which can be life-changing and empowering for many people. Originally from the mountains near Seattle, WA, Courtney’s musical journey has taken her around the world. Since 2004, she’s enjoyed working with students and clients across the country, and has since become an in-demand clinician for college and high school vocalists and jazz choirs. She’s helped singers of all kinds in preparing for major auditions, album releases and recording projects, graduate school studies, music applications, competitions, performances and more. After her years as a teaching artist with the groundbreaking Manhattan School of Music Distance Learning Program– and her need to work remotely while on the road– she discovered her appreciation for e-learning as a medium for voice and music education. For nearly a decade, Courtney was also instrumental in the development of JazzClubsNW, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring future generations of jazz musicians throughout the Pacific Northwest. She was the creator and host of JazzClubsNW’s popular “Vox at the Box,” a vocal jam series active to this day. She was also the voice mentor for the area’s weekly, high school vocal jazz labs, and later worked as the jazz choir interim director. Additionally, Courtney planned and coordinated numerous marketing campaigns, jazz and blues festivals and special events which established relationships with nearly 100 local businesses and raised substantial funds, exceed-

ing the goals of the organization. As a vocalist and composer, Courtney has been an active performer since 2009 and has shared her music nationally at venues and festivals from coast to coast: Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Earshot Jazz Festival, Cornelia Street Cafe, Rockwood Music Hall, Columbia University, Silvana, Poncho Concert Hall, Tula’s Jazz Club, Boxley’s, North Bend Jazz Walk, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and many more. In 2015, Courtney held a monthly residency at NYC’s legendary 55 Bar with the Vinyl Live series. Influenced by the intensity of Jeff Buckley and the sophistication of Sarah Vaughan, her upcoming album “Grunge to Grace” is an introspective fusion of her Seattle rock upbringing and lifelong passion for jazz and storytelling. Find her performance website at: www.courtneycutchins.com. In 2009, she graduated summa cum laude from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA where she received the Welland-Jordan scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Vocal Performance. She was later invited to sing and compose as a member of the esteemed Jim Knapp Orchestra which performed regularly at the Seattle Drum Club. In 2010, she was a finalist in the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s “Ultimate Score” contest, and in 2011, she was a finalist in the Seattle-Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist Competition. Courtney is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Voice Foundation, Voice & Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) and Somatic Voicework Teachers Association. She’s also an Apple Teacher and Certified Google Educator. www.seadragonsonghouse.com

GYPSY ROSE

Music Lives. is where

The opening of the first true live music venue in Roswell (and locally owned!) has changed the local conversation and shined a light on an apparently already vibrant live music community.

U

UNTIL RECENTLY, MUSIC LOVERS in Roswell had been pressed for a dedicated, true-blue music venue in town. In January of this year, Brittany Mullins, with the help of her marketing director Jeris Hollander opened Gypsy Rose to fulfill the collective demand for a space “where music lives.” They believe live music has the unique ability to bring people together under one roof, regardless of culture, class or political differences as communal experiences. Gypsy Rose was founded on friendships, courage, experienced business mindsets, and all around good vibes. Referring to themselves as the “Rose Crew,” the team

62

received an outpouring of support from the Roswell community, and their vision came to life in Historic Roswell.

{

We contacted Brittany first when we had the idea for a commmunity-wide music event - 2019 Roswell Magazine Live Music’fest was scheduled soon after she confirmed GR was on board. Unlike what one would typically think of when hearing the words “music festival,” the Roswell Music’fest is not a single event in a central location. Rather, it’s deliberately planned as a community-wide celebration of live music in every corner of the city. We discovered that the opening of Gypsy Rose has changed the conversation and shined www.30075life.com | issue 25

a light on an apparently already vibrant live music community. This ‘Live Music’ themed issue, as well as the RM Live Music’fest event at the end of June prove how impressed we were with the existing music scene here when we digged a little deeper.

A little over a year ago, Brittany moved to Roswell as a single mom looking to plant roots in a friendly, supportive community. Little did she know how quickly the city would share and embrace her vision for Gypsy Rose. Brittany discovered a vibrant, creative and active community of entrepreneurs in Roswell, who embraced the GR concept, graciously offered positive feedback and support from the very beginning and ongoing. Brittany believes the timing could not have been more perfect. Speaking of perfect timing, last summer when Brittany was seeking quotes from electrical contractors, one of the pricier bids came from a man named Josh Mullins. She noticed some sort of split second vibe between the two of them and quickly realized they had a shared passion

for music. Joshua stepped in and became affectionately known as “the real GC” to ensure Gypsy Rose opened as quickly as possible. About 8 months later she and Josh were married and have recently returned from a fantastic (delayed) honeymoon in Belize. Josh has become instrumental in the day-to-day operations, believes whole-heartedly in Brittany’s vision for GR, and is ’all-in,’ as the venue’s co-owner. Since Brittany knew the significance of opening the first true live music venue in Roswell (and locally owned!), she insisted on meticulous attention to detail with every decision during the build-out. Sound quality, parking, lighting, space planning, interior design - she knew everything mattered. And, she was determined to open more than just a spot to hear great music. Rather, she envisioned and built GR to offer authentic live music experiences to audiences and musicians alike; an eclectic space musicians would hang out after a show or stop by to support other musicians playing. Brittany says, “Music

is magic, and musicians are magicians.” Gypsy Rose looks quite comfy in their premium spot, backing up to east alley alongside Canton Street’s restaurant row. GR is open late from Wednesday evening through Sunday, hosting original live sets from local and regional artists who share the same goal to enrich the community through sound. They have opened up choosing jam bands, as well as a variety of Funk, Indie, Americana, Blues, Southern Rock and Reggae sounds. Coming up in the line-up, they have Cosmic Charlie, Michael Tolcher, Wasted Potential, Michelle Malone, Brad Parsons, Jamie McLean, Urban Soil, Leah Calvert and the Electromatics. GR kicked off the first ALIVE in Roswell of 2019 with Wasted Potential Brass Band, who brought the New Orleans-style party to town, which was such a hit the band was invited back for the May 16 ‘ALIVE’ street party, too. Brittany was excited to tell us Gypsy Rose has lined up some great bands for the Roswell Live Music’fest June 27 - 30: The Orange Constant, Julie Gribble Band, Rhythm Earth, Adam Klein & the Wildfires and Georgia Soul Council. With next-level entertainment, partnerships with food trucks and local restaurants to provide top notch food, a friendly crew and a full service bar, Gypsy Rose is set to soar. The mural on their brick facade captures the unique identity of the establishment– elevated, eclectic and charmingly psychedelic.

Brittany and Josh Mullins met during the early stages of GR build-out and were married inside the venue this Spring. The newlyweds have recently returned from a honeymoon in Belize.

She is "a master at mixing blues and Americana music” (GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE). Over the course of Malone’s career, she has shared stages with artists from Gregg Allman to Indigo Girls, SugarLand's Kristian Bush to Brandi Carlisle, Mississippi All-Stars Luther Dickenson to ZZ Top, released more than a dozen records, and went indie when it still took guts. Her powerful live show will take you on a journey from red dirt back roads to bright city lights, whether she's solo acoustic in a living room concert or in a big arena backed by her band. She "has the soul of a bluesman, the heart of a folk singer, and the guts of a rock and roll star wrapped up in one fiery bad ass" (NASHVILLE RAGE), and she's determined to bring the masses back together in the name of love and music with her latest, Slings and Arrows. 65

CRANE (www.cranemusic.net)

STEPHANE WREMBEL - (www.stephanewrembel.com)

Best described as crossover music, Crane has a sound that is all his own. Musical influences range across the board, but most prevalent in his current writing would be Soul, Reggae, R&B, and Pop. Hypothetically, you might find him on tour with Ben Harper, G Love, The Dirty Heads, Citizen Cope, or Allen Stone. With an average of 250 performances per year, including 5,000-attendee festivals, cruise ships, dive bars, and wing joints, Crane’s motivation in 2017 has been a business-minded focus on “not keeping the band a secret anymore.”

With a unique background of having learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside, this prolific virtuoso guitarist has been releasing a steady stream of music since 2006 and has truly made his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. Stephane Wrembel is presenting his new album The Django Experiment IV, the fourth installment in his series of albums by the same name. The concept is a tribute to the great guitar master, Django Reinhardt; mixing compositions and influences from other landscapes of the musical world. Born in Paris and raised in Fontainebleau, the home of Impressionism and Django, Wrembel has been based in the New York City region for the past 20 years. He has toured around the world, and is very active on the musical scene in many countries including USA, Canada, France, Israel and India.

MOVES (www.thebandmoves.com) Fitting uniquely between the rock, pop, and soul genres, Moves is composed of some of the most accomplished players from Asheville’s diverse musical scene. These experienced musicians carry on the traditions of layered instrumentation and stout three-part harmonies, proving themselves students of ‘60s and ‘70s rock greats, while still finding plenty of room for contemporary flair. On stage, Moves provides non-stop entertainment with each member playing seamlessly from one instrument to the next, delivering well-crafted shows with undeniable ensemble-wide chemistry.

FRONT COUNTRY (www.riversidesounds.com) Top Country's members are more than capable While Front of using traditional techniques on their instruments, they Chef often choose not to. An acoustic group which NPR has dubbed “string-band pop”, Front Country learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. The members are a colorful mosaic of training styles and backgrounds; singer Melody Walker got her start belting out roots-rock, bassist Jeremy Darrow studied jazz, fiddle player Leif Karlstrom is a classically trained violinist, and mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz studied classical guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The band is newly based in Nashville and is currently on tour promoting their new album Other Love Songs.

FAMILY & FRIENDS (www.familyandfriendsband.com) Hailing from the musical mecca of Athens, Georgia, Family and Friends s a crew of seven best friends who play a heart-pumping, foot-stomping, hand-clapping version of indie-folk rock. The band boasts not one, but two drummers, a violinist, three guitarists, and when the mood is right, seven vocalists steadily gained a loyal following through two beloved Eps and their debut full-length album Felix Culpa (2018). With an electrifying and fresh sound, the 70

album is described as “an epic coming-of-age tale with a massive sound that amplifies their former indie-folk roots onto a technicolor screen.” The band’s infectious, dynamic anthems are intoxicating in a live setting, with epic builds that crash over the roar of two dueling drummers. A Family and Friends show is pure, unadulterated fun with a lightning bolt of enthusiasm and a familiarity that is immediately endearing and undeniably gratifying. www.30075life.com | issue 25

Authentic Professionalism You better check yourself before your wreck yourself By Natasha Cary

B

BEING AUTHENTIC AND PROFESSIONAL at the same time? Is that even a thing? Is it possible to be both? I have always been described as someone who is very direct. I have been told before, “You tell it like it is.”, and, “ I never have to wonder how you feel about anything because it is obvious.” While that is true, I am more open and direct with the people closest to me, but I filter myself when it comes to my business. Authentic professionalism doesn’t mean you compromise yourself, it means you edit yourself. As a marketer who caters to small businesses, I see too often business owners being too casual, sharing too much, or not being self-aware on how they come across to their audience. There is a fine line between being authentic and being unprofessional. I am not saying you can’t still be YOU, but if you are too casual people may make assumptions about your business based on that particular behavior. They may interpret it as a lack of professionalism which will in turn may cause them to not do business with you. Professionalism is not being someone you are not or being fake. Professionalism is a common set of expectations. It means showing up on time, doing what you say you will do, having integrity, being reliable. And if people feel you are not able to deliver by the way you present yourself or by what you do or say, that perception can be

www.30075life.com | issue 25

hard to change once it has been established. There are many opportunities to still be yourself, you just have to find the balance between showing your flavor, while maintaining your business presence. In today’s digital age, businesses have a broader audience than ever, however it is easy to get lost in the endless stream of emails and social posts. Carving out a time and place for authenticity is important to differentiate your business from your competitors and establish a relationship with your consumers. Take advantage of the platforms available to tell your story your way. Being authentic should be a part of your strategy all about sharing your values, your sense of humor (if you have one), your services and products, and delivering a consistent experience. Just remember your mom is probably seeing your post on Facebook, so if its ok for your mom it’s probably ok for your consumers. Playing Roswell

Influenced by early roots elements, Urban Soil fuses those sounds with a fresh take, delivering a blend of raw nostalgia with a modern and glistening slant. Sarah Reinke fronts the band on vocals, guitar and percussion including an occasional electrified washboard. Guitarist and vocalist, Eric Chesson, delivers forceful and driving components with every lick, and offers steadfast vocals. Greg Meckley’s skillful violin, vocals and percussion blend tight layers and bright sounds that solidify the band smoothly against driving guitars. Holding down the rhythm section, Jonathan Wilson and Leo Kishore provide a concrete foundation on drums and bass, respectively.

Hailing from North Carolina, Urban Soil weaves Americana, rock and soul into their explosive live shows and polished recordings. Their studio albums reflect the uncompromising energy that Urban Soil consistently delivers live, and are a stimulating representation of the band’s skillful-yet-visceral sound. Urban Soil has the unique ability to capture the energy of their live shows and translate it to their studio recordings, resulting in an electrifying experience.

The City Dirt Trio is a side project of Urban Soil, intended for smaller venues and more intimate settings. It features Gregory Meckley on violin and vocals, Eric Chesson holding down the acoustic guitar, bass and vocals, and Jonathan Wilson on Cajon, bass and vocals. There is a strong emphasis on acoustic music and the native Appalachian and bluegrass traditions of North Carolina as well as healthy doses of Urban Soil originals and tasty Americana-inspired renditions of popular songs.

From its summer 1999 inception, the band has been swiftly cementing its reputation as a band that puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalogue, a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands. Rather than mimicking the Dead exactly, Cosmic Charlie chooses to tap into the Dead's energy and style as a foundation on which to build. The result is healthy balance of creativity and tradition, and both the band and its audience are taken to that familiar edge with the sense that, music is actually being made here tonight.Moving and

Originating as a "one-night-only" Jerry Garcia birthday tribute, word spread quickly that this was no ordinary musical confluence. Gigs started knocking at the door.

The combined musical talents and efforts of Stephanie Caron (vocals, guitar, tambourine, kazoo) and Evan Hart (violin, . A unique blend of bluegrass, Americana, roots, and rockabilly give the group an unmistakable and unique sound that is as full of energy as it is passion. Touring the East Coast, Battlefield Collective performs original material as well as their own arrangements of cover songs selected from top hits from the past sixty years. Energy, creativity, flexibility and versatility set Battlefield Collective apart from other bands. Stephanie and Evan often perform as a duo, but also frequently hire local musicians to create a fuller sound to match the needs for any venue or private event.

“As soon as he opens his mouth… everybody stops to listen.” says Don McCollister, a studio veteran who spent 20-plus years producing hits for artists like Shawn Mullins, Third Day and Sister Hazel. Davin McCoy’s music offers an honest observation of the dark side of humanity with themes of hope and redemption, heavy lyrics and emotional performances. Davin was born in Albany, Georgia, but moved to Atlanta when his parents divorced– split between folk and soul. At his dad’s house, he listened to James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and Jim Croce. At his mother’s, he listened to Van Morrison, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Bill Whithers. At age 11, he picked up a guitar and led a worship band for several years.

Oh what a night...

The 2019 Roswell Magazine 10U40 awards presentation event at Naylor Hall was a lot of fun. In this piece we’re naming all the good people who made this event possible. We couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you. The 2019 Roswell Magazine 10U40 Awards event on March 21 at Naylor Hall was an incredible occasion that brought together locals from all over Roswell to celebrate and honor the 10 winners of the inaugural initiative. I wanted to let our readers know which local businesses support and honor the work of local Millennials. They didn’t have to get involved. They wanted to. Now let’s go support all of them. Chris Smith, my business partner here at Roswell Magazine / Local Life Publishing is such a great supporter and encourager of my ‘crazy ideas’ and never once has he bursted any of my bubbles when I have gotten excited or talked fast about something of which I’m passionate. He’s 78

always there when I need him and has become a mentor for me over the last five years —- His “real job” is running his company Praxis Technology Escrow (www.praxisescrow. com) of which I still have no idea what he does; and his “fun job” PhotoSmith (www.photo-smith.biz) with which he gets to stay on top of the photography essentials he was so familiar with as a commercial photographer (and shoot a cover of Roswell Magazine for me every now and then!). First, what a night created by Sunny Bailey, and her right-hand woman Abbey, and her her team at Naylor Hall (www.naylorhall.com). Never ruffled, completely organized and intuitive throughout the event planning process and www.30075life.com | issue 25

execution. What a beautiful venue and enjoyable evening everyone experienced because of Sunny’s masterful behind the scenes work putting all the pieces of the event puzzle together. Some people are naturally gifted with having a Southern Hospitality-like disposition — that’s Sunny Bailey. I keep saying this; but it was so interesting to me to realize Naylor Hall is the only historic special events facility on Canton Street. The other prominent ones are over on Mimosa. Andrew Brackner of Talk of the Town Catering (www. talkofthetownatlanta.com) went above and beyond with their menu choices for this event; and we had so many compliments from guests about the food. When we met Andrew Brackner to discuss plans for this event, we asked him to decide the menu trusting his reputation for being a preferred caterer at the best venues in Roswell and throughout Atlanta. He and his team - coordinated by Georgina Mathews - impressed our guests with their choices. A guest favorite of the collection of passed hors d’oeuvres was the Ahi Tuna, which was seared and sesame encrusted, served with sweet chili, tamarind, aioli and seaweed salad on a wonton crisp. The ‘after party chatter’ appeared to indicate a tie between two of the ‘small plates’ items: Caribbean Meatballs and the Chorizo Skewers. The meatballs were garnished with grilled pineapple, mango, roasted peppers and onions with a sweet and tangy demi-glace. The grilled potato and chorizo skewers tasted and looked amazing in presentation. The chef-attended smoked brisket station was a treat, offering brisket in both Asian and Gyro-style. Jean Korac of Truffles Chocolate Factory was so generous to pull everything together for us the day before the event so we would have something sweet for our guests at the event. One guest commented those were the best chocolate covered strawberries she has ever ‘experienced.’ The crew from Positively Roswell (www.positivelyroswell. com) was instrumental in the planning and production of the professional-quality awards program and ceremony, and their own Tai Anderson (www.taispeaks.com) as emcee was a big hit with our guests - his timing and quick wit were perfect and everybody enjoyed the “show.” Scott Long always had a smile on his face and kept the sound and lighting in check, and Theo Keyserling (www.meridiangrouppartners. com) was a calming and wise voice of reason throughout the month-long judging process and hectic pre-event activity. Also part of the Positively Roswell ‘package’ was Natasha Cary (www.flavorexp.com) who worked up the run of show, secured song picks from the winners and devised each of the questions the ten had to answer in their best Miss America-style seriousness. She also handled my nerves beautifully in the days leading up to the event and specifically just www.30075life.com | issue 25

before the presentation began. Jackie Hites of Blooming Hites Floral Boutique (www. bloominhites.com) set the classic tone with simple white tulips adorning every table and buffet. Jackie was a joy to work with — easy going and agreeable, as well as knowledgable and helpful, despite her business being recently temporarily relocated after a fire in her shop’s building. Tracey Hoexter Photographer (www.tracyhoexter.com) is the gifted photographer who was graciously flexible in photographing the winners quickly before the magazine went to press and then putting so much care and attention into capturing all the right moments and shots of the event. She had the photos back to me within days and it was so much fun reliving the night through her eyes and images. I was so excited when Ashlyn Alford of Bow & Arrow Media (www.bowandarrowmedia.com) presented me with the finished 2 minute promo recap video a few days after the event because it reminded me what a positive night it was for all involved. Having that promo video from Ashlyn providing us with an added professional-wow-ness that we were able to share through social media, email and our website to those in attendance and those unable to make it. You can view it now at www.30075life.com/u40. Dana Gurela from Deep Roots Wine Market (www. deeprootswine.com) chose some of the best wines for the winners, classically wrapped in gift bags which matched the color and tones reflected throughout the event decor. Each winner was presented with a hand-crafted Waterford Crystal red or white wine goblet personally engraved for each of them by Kahla Lewis, owner of Roswell-based Georgia Engraving (www.georgiaengraving.com). Jon Oswald (www.jonoswald.com) is the talented and creative local musician we chose to entertain our guests during the cocktail reception - he has performed hundreds of events and I was able to leave it all in his hands to do what he does best. He managed and engaged our guests in this networking celebratory style event with some our their favorite covers, as well as his original songs released just one week later on his debut album ‘Hung Up Wet.’ Go to his website to buy it and support local music! Lisa Weltsch of Street Studio Creative (www.streetstudiocreative.com) was a star social media marketer for the 10U40 from the first call for nominations all the way through to the post-event praise. Always positive, kind, enthusiastic and helpful, I have decided to suggest she where a name tag 24/7 that says, “My name is Lisa — how can I help?” As busy as she is running her own local social media marketing firm, she was incredibly generous with all of her “how can I help”s! Thanks so much Lisa. XO

Paul & Marybeth Lunsford from The Wandering Photo Camper (www.thewanderingphotocamper.com) provided such a unique treat to our guests adding a really fun element to the “experience” of the evening - another cool factor was all the social media love we got when we shared the silly pics from inside the camper. All of these folks looked so normal when they came out of the photo camper… Who knew? Doug Fallon of Roswell Pedicabs (www.roswellpedicabs. com) was another unique treat for our guests who were able to take a short ride down and back on Canton Street as part of his pedicab service. At the end of the night, after all the guests had gone (to the after party at Osteria Mattone lol) Doug pedaled me around downtown and I felt like a princess. Frank Mack of City Antiques & Interiors (www.cityantiques. com) - my good friend, Frank. He is the kind of friend I can say, “I have no idea what I need help with but I’m completely overwhelmed with everything on my plate;” and he will offer full availability to do whatever is needed to help. While I drove to Gwinnett to get the banners three hours before the guests arrived, Frank went to my home, loaded all my event materials into his jeep, picked up my wonderful Danielle (Milton Magazine), and swung by Truffles Chocolate to grab the deserts. And he doesn’t judge :-) XO Danielle Bartling - My sweetheart niece and Associate Publisher ‘everything’ of our sister publication, Milton Magazine. Seriously, I couldn’t have gotten everything ready had I not had Danielle there early setting up for us hours ahead of time, checking in guests and then being the last to leave with me www.30075life.com | issue 25

after packing up the car at the end of the night. Judges: Dotty Etris (retired), Joanna Spencer (Bentley, Theo Keyserling (www.theoprotocol.com) and Sunny Bailey (www. naylorhall.com) Swag Bags: Ahoo Sarab from Korsi Yoga (www.korsiyoga. com) provided a cool t-shirt for each guest; Natasha Cary of Flavor EXP (www.flavorexp.com) provided the new trend in promos items: stainless steel straw and cleaner brushes; April Lundy of Harmony Chiropractic (www.harmonychiropractic. com) got the mosts ‘oooohs’ and ‘aahhhhs’ with her sweet promo lavender calming essential oil rollers that filled the foyer with the smell of lavender well after the last guest had left for the evening. Other neat swag donations were from Rick Banks of SFX Fitness (www.sfxfitness.com) who gave $25 Amazon gift cards, Tim Stevens of From the Earth Brewing Co (www.ftebrewing.com) gave vouchers for free flights of craft beer; and Mike Thomas of Wildslice Pizzeria gave each guest a $5 off voucher towards one of his tasty pies. Sherry & Company real estate team provided soft koozies; Lisa Weltsch of Street Studio Creative (www.streetstudiocreative. com) provided vouchers for $100 off her marketing project service; Lilly Sage Apothecary (www.lillysageapothecary. com) provided coasters; and the swag bags also included interesting information from Gate City Brewing, Seadragon Songhouse, Naylor Hall and 10% off wine from Deep Roots Wine Market. I appreciate you suiting up, showing up and then sharing all over social media the next day about what a fabulous time you had. lol. Seriously, I was on a pink cloud reading all of y’alls impressions of the evening. Thank you. The 48: I really appreciate the time and careful consideration each nominee gave to the application process. I was inspired to do great things after learning about everything you guys have achieved and done for the community and the world, actually. I appreciate your graciousness every time I had another ‘quick question’ for you guys to answer 82

for me. The responses from these cool Millennials were prompt and courteous. Way to represent, y’all! The 10: You guys have gotten enough accolades, right? What can I say that hasn’t already been said? You guys are respected professionals and leaders in your fields. Your award simply reflects a moment in a time in your life you inspired others to be more than they believed they could be.
