HEALTHY FIT AND BEAUTIFUL ROSWELL

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Roswell Magazine

Something occurred to me while our team was collaborating on this issue. Our best editions of Roswell Magazine are the ones in which we let the theme evolve, rather than insist on a pre-determined subject-matter months in advance.

is published by Local Life Publishing, LLC 10719 Alpharetta Hwy., #1153, Roswell info@locallifepublishing.com Founder / Publisher REGINA BARKLEY President CHRIS SMITH

Sometimes, if we set a theme ahead of time, it can fall short. We push to solicit advertisers around the topic and assign feature articles far in advance. However, like with this March/April issue, when we simply let the motif evolve, I think our final product is much more interesting for the reader.

Associate Publishers LISA & DALTON PEPPER Lisa Pepper • (470) 514-9922 lisa@locallifepublishing.com

Local business owners don’t advertise in RM because we are writing about their area or industry. They advertise with us because they want to reach out to our readers - local, engaged, active residents in Roswell - and show they are community supporters. The best thing we can do on our end is listen to the readers!

Dalton Pepper • (770) 490-4464 dalton@locallifepublishing.com Editor CLAIRE MURPHY

What started as a cover story about Planet Fitness opening their second gym in Roswell; and our interest in the unique spin the company takes in its brand philosophy, turned into a “health & fitness” issue. Stories of yoga in Riverside Park, Healthcare professionals prescribing “parks” to their patients, and the Roswell Cycling Festival fit perfectly.

Associate Editor DANIELLE BARTLING Copy Editor SALLY NELSON

But then, a common sub-theme began to take shape, as we received submissions and sensed enthusiasm for working together to make Roswell “beautiful.” The Azalea Festival’s focus is on showing off the City during the month of April when everything is blooming. Ryan Pernice was eager to tell us more about the Historic Roswell Beautification Project; and Keep Roswell Beautiful, whose focus is on preservation and conservation kept popping up when we were researching Roswell’s plans for Earth Day. We decided to add the word “beautiful” to “Healthy Fit.” So, as you see on the cover, this is the “Healthy, Fit and Beautiful issue.”

Throw in the Roswell Beer Festival, ALIVE in Roswell, St Patrick’s Day parties and the short-drive up to the Dahlonega Arts & Wine Festival - and we realize we have one fabulous city. Plus, we have a heck of a lot of individuals who work hard behind the scenes to make sure it stays fabulous.

Contributing Writers DEBRA BOICE, RYAN PERNICE Circulation Manager MICHAEL PATRICK VINCENT HALEY

Not only do we strive to be healthy, fit and beautiful by taking care of our bodies, minds and spirits, but the City of Roswell does, too! Healthy and fit with a strong economy, strong families and top schools - and beautiful inside and out.

Farley’s Favorites April 23 • Roswell Cultural Arts Center • 950 Forrest Street, Roswell, GA 30075 In a salute to the late Artistic Director Bob Farley, Joe Gransden’s Big Band will play many of his favorites.

JOE GRANSDEN HAD BEEN ABLE TO SIT DOWN WITH BOB FARLY AT HIS RETIREMENT CELEBRATION BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY AND DISCOVERED ALL OF FARLEY’S FAVORITES. From Sinatra to Goodman to Count Basie, this tribute show features all of the best and will be a fun, farewell tribute to Farley for all who knew him. Farley, Co-founder and Artistic Director of GET passed away unexpectedly in late 2017 less than a month after he and his wife Anita accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Suzi Bass Awards. Robert J. Farley, 69, was a passionate leader, a committed artist, but most importantly a much beloved husband, father, and grandfather. In memory of Bob, GET has established the Robert J. Farley Memorial Fund. Alan Kilpatrick, who was taking over as artistic director of the company said, “His passing diminishes theater in Atlanta. I believe Bob had the largest heart and had more respect for theater artists than any producer I’ve ever worked with.” Last year, GET released a statement honoring Farley professionally and personally. “Bob was a person of many talents and interests. He kept his hands on the reins and his shoulder to the wheel for 25 years at Georgia Ensemble Theatre, and at the Alliance Theatre and Alaska Repertory Theatre before that. His leadership and influence were truly something special.” www.get.org

T

WINNING GOLD BY GOING GREEN Roswell recognized for environmental efforts

THE CITY OF ROSWELL AGAIN ACHIEVED ITS recertification as a Green Community at the Gold level, as well as again was recognized by the League of American Bicyclists with a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community award. The Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities program is a voluntary certification program that helps local governments implement measures that will reduce their environmental impact. Some measures that earned Roswell certification points include: • Installed Advanced Metering Infrastructure meters that provide water usage data by the hour to assist the utility with leak identification to conserve water • Continued to make recycling a priority by collecting an average of 8,300 tons of recyclable materials • Installed permeable pavers on a road in the Hog Waller Creek watershed, which offers flood protection • Maintained / Expanded the Historic Roswell District since its adoption in 1971 • Installed Georgia’s first “bike box,” the area in a lane that that increases the visibility of cyclists • Used repurposed materials for the pavilion furniture and walkway path in the city’s Serenity Garden “We applaud the local governments for reducing their environmental impact,” said ARC chairman Kerry Armstrong. “As they do so, they lead the way in creating a more livable region.”

KEEP ROSWELL BEAUTIFUL non-profit’s focus is on conservation and preservation

A GROUP OF ENVIRONMENTALLY MINDED individual volunteers are active and very involved with Keep Roswell Beautiful, a Roswell non-profit organization which uses a variety of methods to ensure the conservation, preservation and clean-up of our local environment. In partnership with the City of Roswell Environmental / Public Works Department, KRB implements green programs, such as Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-A-Stream, Storm Drain Marking, the Great American Cleanup, Bring One for the Chipper, and Rivers Alive. Other initiatives spearheaded by these local volunteers include DIY Rain Barrel Workshops, Bulky Trash Amnesty Day, Toxic and Hazardous Waste Disposal and the Big Creek Wetlands Work Day. At RM, we love naming names! KRB’s 2017-18 Board of Directors include: Craig Voth, Cindy Bowling, David Wright, Cheryl Henleben, Kim Weber, Stefanie Dye, Jeff Easte, Brent Hetzler, Ron Jackson, JB Queen, Patrick Smith and Becky Wynn In late February KRB executed the Roswell Green Expo to drive the community’s focus to businesses and organizations with serious commitments to green initiatives. An annual event, vendors presented products and services in line with Keep Roswell Beautiful’s mission, as well as held informational and educational workshops and programs for attendees.

This key opens a door to complimentary tanning, drink discounts, light therapy, massage chairs and Hydromassage beds, giving members full body massages via pressurized water jets to relax weary muscles. These two ideas encourage occasional or first-time gym members to give health and fitness a try. Members find no leering eyes or superiority complexes at PF. By not trying to be all things to all fitness levels, the staff is able to focus on the things that really matter to the 80% of the population who don’t currently belong to gyms. Every Planet Fitness location, nationally, offers a Judgement Free Zone®, which ensures individual members are embraced regardless of age, sex, weight, fitness level, relationship status, or equipment expertise. Members both seasoned and new are encouraged to “celebrate every triumph,” and are regularly reminded of the PF motto, “The world judges. We don’t.” Make no mistake, the owners don’t just “talk the talk.” They follow up these words by walking their messages of inclusivity and non-judgment into the local communities in which they operate. To launch the company’s philanthropic initiative, The Judgement Free Generation®, Planet Fitness partnered with STOMP Out Bullying, an organization dedicated to bullying prevention, as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The company has commendably

These efforts have impacted local youth to encourage them to adopt this infectious, positive and unifying attitude. In addition to company-wide initiatives, the local gyms host awareness training, fund prevention programs, provide TVs, and grant $1000 donations with each grand opening of a new PF facility. In January the Thomasville BGCA directly benefited from these local efforts. Elsewhere, PF has designed, built and funded Mini Judgement Free Zones® inside some of BGCA facilities to “cultivate a culture of kindness and encouragement” for the kids. Are You Ready for Festival Season?

GET OUT(side)! This time of year we are given every reason and opportunity to get outside and DO SOMETHING. Some of us (me) go into a subtle social hibernation mode beginning in November, so when March in Roswell hits we feel a spring in our step. Spring and Fall are what we at RM like to call FESTIVAL SEASONS. We’ve got the low-down here, so keep reading. BY CLAIRE MURPHY

Prom Date Dining BY CLAIRE MURPHY

Roswell area high school juniors and seniors are making preparations for this year’s prom. The basics of this celebratory evening have remained unchanged over the years; however, I’ve discovered (as a mother of sons) that there isn’t very much I have to do. Once the boys have creatively prom-posed, the girls take over. The girls are the masterminds of the evening, deciding which couples will be in the core group, where they will take pictures and in which restaurant the group will dine before the dance. To help them out we’ve got a cheat sheet list of Roswell restaurants which are perfect for prom. Some of these restrict the size of a group, so be sure to ask questions when you make your reservation at least ten days in advance. And, have fun!

The HRBP mission is to create, maintain and preserve the beauty and charm of our streets, improve civic pride, and enhance the overall Historic Roswell experience for our citizens and visitors.

Beautiful! Historic Roswell Beautification Project Brightens Historic District

W •

BY RYAN PERNICE

WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT Roswell’s Historic District (HD) is a gem in North Fulton. Stretching from the Chattahoochee River to Woodstock Street, the HD is a point of pride for residents and a point of interest for visitors. A young civic group, the Historic Roswell Beautification Project (HRBP), made it a mission to enhance the vibrancy and appeal of our downtown by combining public and private resources. How did this initiative blossom (pun intended)? Renee Shirley, a Roswell resident with some close connections to several business owners in the HD, personally planted a seed in minds of like-minded citizens. She then fertilized this idea, galvanizing them to brainstorm actions they could take to enhance and beautify the streetscapes in downtown Roswell. There’s no question in anyone’s mind the riverfront, Roswell Square, and Canton Street provide great “bones” for this community; however, this small group of motivated individuals felt there needed to be more attention to the surface details, which can sometimes be overlooked when we are only seeing the big picture. They noticed there had not been any focus on or

substantial improvements made to the “curb appeal” of this area in many years. We take great care to encourage families, visitors and new enterprises to choose Roswell, but had we neglected to heed what any realtor would instruct - that great curb appeal will be what gets them to take that first look? It wasn’t long before this group of local business owners and historic district residents discovered they were on to something and decided to call their coalition the Historic Roswell Beautification Project (HRBP). Its initial priority was to begin crafting a vision for a brighter, more colorful and welcoming historic district. That was 12 months ago. Have you noticed those hanging flower pots along Canton Street? Does the Roswell Square and Canton Street seem brighter? What about the shiny sidewalks through the Heart of Roswell Park and the Roswell Square? Are they more inviting, beckoning you more persuasively lately to come outside for a stroll? Each of these seemingly insignificant improvements are projects of the HRBP and their tireless leader, Renee. Each project was intentionally collaborative, engaging Roswell residents, local businesses and the City in its execution - a true private / public solution to achieve a community objective. The HRBP worked with Lawn South and the City of Roswell to coordinate planting colorful flowers in all of the hanging baskets for streetlamps along public right-of-ways. The HRBP and

their partners pressure washed sidewalks, weeded pathways, and laid paving stones in overgrown bare stretches of dirt. Caldwell Tree Care “limbed-up” the trees in the parks and those along Canton Street, opening the tree canopy and allowing the street lamps’ golden lights to glow more proudly. Lawn South and Caldwell Tree Care donated a lot of their own time and their own resources to these efforts. When I expressed my personal gratitude, their simple words told me - and their humble attitudes implied, “We live here, too.” And that was that.

There is always more we can do. Renee and the HRBP won’t rest on any laurels. There are plans for street planters - large and small; a tree lighting at the Roswell Square; more appealing curb improvements; cigarette disposal posts; more trash recepticles and some bench refurbishments. Anyone with a smile is welcome to join the great folks of the HRBP and take part polishing the varnish which had begun to dull Roswell’s shine. If you can’t join the HRBP at this time, please do take notice of these changes and be sure to thank the individuals and businesses who work behind the scenes so we can all enjoy and appreciate where we make our homes and livelihoods.

Simple beautification measures like these don’t just “happen.” We make them happen. And then we watch as visitors interpret these efforts as evidence of our City tagline, “Modern Spirit. Southern Soul.” As the HRBP prepares for the busy Spring planting season, it’s hoping more residents will be inspired to join them. Donations are always needed, as well, as it is a 100% volunteer organization. And, the next time you and your family, colleagues or friends are strolling down Canton Street or enjoying the the central parks, you can feel a little pride knowing you were part of something BEAUTIFUL. www.hrbproject.com

The City of Roswell announces we can now send text messages directly to our 911 center during an emergency situation.

The 411 on the new TEXT to 911 BY CLAIRE MURPHY

THE CITY OF ROSWELL IS PLEASED TO announce that people can now send text messages directly to our 911 center during an emergency situation. Text-to-911 is an alternative to calling in an emergency when it would be unsafe for an individual to speak.

Text to 911 option could be an emergency lifeline.” Alterio advises, “Speaking to a 911 dispatcher is still the fastest way to receive help to the location so remember to call if you can, text if you can’t.”

I’m so excited about this new initiative! It truly is more efficient for me to text than to call. In an emergency situation, when my adrenaline might be pumping, it wouldn’t be as natural for me to navigate to my phone app, away from the list of “recent calls” and press to open the number key pad screen. Sometimes I wonder if I am a millennial trapped in a 47 year old body? The truth is I simply don’t make many phone calls anymore. Melissa Alterio, Director of the City of Roswell 911 Center, said “If a caller is in a dangerous situation where they are unable to speak, such as an intruder in the home or a domestic violence situation, then this

The City of Roswell Police 911 Emergency Communications Division has collaborated with AT&T and West to implement Text-to-911 on Roswell’s Next Generation 911 (NG911) call handling system. In an emergency, dialing 911 may not always be feasible. People with a hearing loss or those who must remain quiet in a dangerous situation may not be able to safely make a phone call. Now they can simply text a message which will be received by our communications center. If there is an emergency and you cannot call 911, take these steps: 1. Enter 911 in the “to” field. 2. Text your address and the nature of the emergency. Voila!

Young at Heart

E

Below, we read that Jim and Joanne scuba dive to stay ‘young at heart;’ and we are reminded of a very famous diver - Jacques Cousteau - who continued scuba diving well into his golden years. Although by then, he had difficulty walking and even remaining upright, he continued to scuba dive until his death at 87.

EARLY LAST MONTH, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH JOANNE & JIM RUSSELL, A ROSWELL COUPLE, TO FIND OUT HOW THEY STAY “YOUNG AT HEART?” The conversation was delightful – full of excitement, vitality for life and new adventures, so I’d like to share it with you. I asked, “How do you stay so ‘young at heart’?” JOANNE - I never, ever, use the ‘O-word’ I hear people of all ages say, ‘I’m too old to do that’. Age is a mindset. I ski, scuba and work-out regularly. ‘No, I can’t’ is not in my vocabulary. JIM - My mottos are, ‘Don’t quit,’ and ‘I’m going down swinging.’ I can’t tell you how many times I hear, ‘I can’t do that. I’m too old.’ One day I noticed an equilateral triangle on the wall in a martial arts dojo. It read, “Strong Mind, Strong Body, Strong Spirit.” I try to live that way. I have a fraternity brother who asked me, “What do I do now, Jim?” His wife has Alzheimer’s. She was only 55 years old when she was diagnosed. I told him to ‘get out of bed. Put your boots on, and start moving’. JOANNE - You have to take care of yourself. I am blessed with good health. Longevity runs in my family. I retired at 65, an answer to my prayers. And then my dream of being involved in tv and films came true. I am an extra. If they need a mature white female, I might be called. Just being there, and waiting in between scenes with everyone else, gives me an opportunity to be picked for another part. Very exciting. I love the people I have met. JIM - My two careers keep me ‘young at heart’. One is with Ecraft Custom Homes (www.ecraftgeorgia.com).

When I was in the 7th and 8th grades, I attended a boarding school across the river from West Point. The instructor told us about Pompeii and Herculaneum, which captivated my imagination from then on. Finally, in 2011, Joanne and I went on a cruise to Pompeii with 67 others, and I got to fulfill my life-long dream to see it and to actually be there. JIM & JOANNE - You have things in your life, which excite you. Each day, have a plan and a goal. JOANNE - I love scuba diving. Putting on a tank, going down 70 feet into the ocean, being in the moment, being aware of every breath I take. Sometimes, a dolphin comes right up to me, and I can hug it - amazing. Thank you, Jim and Joanne, for sharing your thoughts and insights with the Roswell community. THE ARTS IN ROSWELL

Permanent Public Art POPS ROSWELL ARTS FUND IS DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THE purchase of three sculptures from the 2017 ArtAround Roswell sculpture tour as gifts to the City of Roswell. Reception, Sweet Pops of Brilliance, and Sentience will all remain permanently in Roswell. Steady has been purchased by The Hagan Family Foundation and on loan until 2019. The sculptures will join 2 other permanent pieces purchased from last year’s tour, Smoke in the Roswell Square and Oak Leaf Triptych in Roswell Area Park. ArtAround Roswell’s 2018 Opening Celebration will be April 14 at Riverside Park.

RECREATION, created by Nigerian artist Fred Ajanogha, is located at the Roswell Riverwalk and welcomes visitors, fulfilling a Nigerian tradition they should be greeted by the most beautiful woman in the house. The sculpture, made of stone cast, is of an African woman, dressed in traditional attire.

SWEET POPS OF BRILLIANCE, by artist Craig Snyder, features man-made materials forged into a whimsical form, then infused with bright primary shades. This piece was created to remind people of their fun, happy memories with family and friends. Fittingly, it remains in East Roswell Park, near the lake, fields, paths and Rec Center where these happy memories are made everyday. Ben Pierce’s sculpture STEADY, will remain because of a generous purchase of the Hagan Family Foundation. It will be on loan to the City of Roswell for the ArtAround Roswell 2018 tour and remain in its current location at Riverside Park at the East Trail entrance through early 2019. It is installed in one of the few sites which is visible to vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic.

SENTIENCE, by Atlanta-based artist David Landis will remain in the Heart of Roswell Park on Canton Street. This purchase was made possible in part by a $10,000 challenge grant issued by the Roswell Downtown Development Authority (Roswell DDA). Matching funds were raised via the Roswell Arts Fund’s 2017 Keep the Art! campaign.

BOG TURTLES They’re protected down the street at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Rosie Walunas/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Did you know there is a turtle in Roswell measuring only 4.5 inches in length? The bog turtle, the smallest turtle in the U.S., is facing extinction due to predators and unscrupulous wildlife collectors. If you are lucky enough to see a bog turtle out and about during your summer adventures, you might recognize them by their prominent orange, yellow, or red blotch on each side of the head behind their eye. Sadly, their populations are continuing to dwindle and are now separated by 400 miles along the east coast into northern and southern populations, mainly inhabiting areas of New York and Georgia. In 1997, the bog turtle was placed on the Endangered Species list and has since then faced the illegal pet trade, as well as habitat loss of their wetlands.

headshots

Currently, there are estimated to be 2,500 to 10,000 bog turtles in the wild, and efforts are being made to protect and grow their populations. The Chattahoochee Nature Center has been committed to preserving the habitat of bog turtles through work with community partners and environmental agencies. In 2005, staff from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Tennessee Aquarium, U.S. Forest Service, Atlanta Botanical Garden, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service successfully released bog turtles into a restored mountain bog habitat in North Georgia. Today, they are still committed to preserving the habitats of bog turtles in our communities. The Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center helps rehabilitate a variety of wildlife after these animals are unable to live in the wild. In line with upcoming Earth Day, we salute our Chattahoochee Nature Center, whose mission it is to connect people with nature.

ROAD TRIP

BY CLAIRE MURPHY It’s just a 5 to 6 hour drive from Roswell to the beautiful beaches of 30A.

We’ll Be There By Noon I AM MOST CONTENT AT THE BEACH. Several years ago, my friend decided to move - with school-aged children like mine - from Roswell to a beach community along beautiful Scenic Hwy 30A in the Florida Pandhandle. At the time, I remember wondering, “Why don’t I have the courage to do that?” Today, a top Realtor with The Premier Property Group on 30A, Janet Murphy decided to promote her services here. Less than six hours from Roswell, we often road trip to 30A; but do we ever consider moving there? Or, do we conclude that’s impractical - maybe after we retire? Whether you’re heading to 30A for Spring Break, or planning to look at property, below we highlight some of the differences between the communities.

A

Are you looking for spring or summer break ideas for families? While the college kids head over to Panama City Beach, the grown-ups and families are headed to 30A. Among the best spring break destinations for families, this stretch of beach along the Florida panhandle has everything needed for a fun, yet peaceful vacation for all ages. Scenic Highway 30A is a 24 mile corridor from end to end which hugs the Gulf of Mexico coastline in Northwest Florida's Walton County. Sugar-white sand beaches, rare coastal dune lakes, nature preserves, seafood rivaling Charleston and dotted with quaint neighborhoods posing as small towns. The neighborhoods of 30A differ in age, look and feel, meaning there's one for every type of traveler.

34

Here is a quick flyover look at the beaches and neighborhoods in this popular, family vacation destination less than six hours from Roswell. SANTA ROSA BEACH Technically, Santa Rosa Beach encompasses a large part of South Walton, including the smaller neighborhoods of Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton Beach and Blue Mountain Beach, although each of these sub-communities strives to keep its identity distinct and unique. The first things noticed when turning here onto Highway 30A are all the trees. Topsail Hill Preserve, one of Florida’s most treasured state parks, and characterized by 25-foot dunes, 3.2 miles of secluded beaches, and freshwater fishing is like driving through a forest. The residential areas are quiet, meant for long lazy dinners on the porch after long lazy days on the beach. Vacation Homes Along Rosemary Beach SEAGROVE Seagrove Beach has been around much longer than some of the other beach towns. It is located basically in the center of the drive across 30A and home to a variety of restaurants, shops, and other local businesses within walking or biking distance. Since it's not a master-planned development the beaches tend to be a little less crowded. Most homes are tucked away beneath stately oak trees or overlook the Gulf of Mexico.

Grayton could be considered unassuming, small enough that residents with beach pads and historic cottages of all shapes and sizes know their neighbors. Visitors notice the dense foliage, twisting oak trees, quaint shops and galleries, and fun and quirky residents. The community’s unofficial slogan is “Nice Dogs, Strange People.” WATERCOLOR One of the Gulf Coast’s most luxurious resorts with a wide variety of activities for families, WaterColor is a massive network of attractive houses that stretches across both sides of the highway. We find nature preserves, bike trails, paddle boarding, shopping, fitness facilities, a spa, parks, award-winning dining, nearby award-winning golf courses and the Gulf of Mexico’s sugar-white beaches. Hailed as Northwest Florida’s Only Four-Diamond AAA Hotel, the resort’s WaterColor Inn was also recently honored with a “World’s Best” award from Travel+Leisure magazine.

INLET BEACH One of South Walton’s most untouched beach neighborhoods - surrounded by 13 acres of protected dunes - Inlet Beach boasts the largest public beach access point on 30A. The community is laid-back and carefree with cozy beach cottages mixed- n with more modern homes. It is home to many restaurants, which are local favorites. GULF PLACE Along with the usual gorgeous beaches and natural preserves, the Gulf Place Town Center is a popular destination along 30A to eat, drink, and relax. This beach community is bustling with charming boutiques, cafes, art studios and restaurants and is considered a “diamond in the rough” for artists, young and old.

SEASIDE Time Magazine once decided Seaside is perhaps “the most astounding design achievement of its era.” Seaside is credited with founding the town-planning movement known as New Urbanism. In the 80s, developer Robert Davis had a vision for an adorable, harmonious beachside town. Its “small town” design was carefully planned with nine unique beach pavilions, cobblestone streets, quaint cottages, white picket fences, its own schools, and picture-perfect parks and storefronts. The Truman Show (about a fake, “perfect” community) starring Jim Carrey was filmed here. There's a post office in the center of town, and all the houses have names.

DUNE ALLEN Dune Allen offers an abundant outdoor space and a welcoming, tight-knit community with three coastal dune lakes, which are extremely rare bodies of Hwy 98 water found in Scenic Hwy 30 A only a handful of places across the world. This beach town is a dream destination for nature lovers and eco-explorers.

ALYS BEACH Alys shows off its “new urbanist” community with signature palm trees, a nature preserve, iconic butteries, and bright white stucco architecture set against rich greenery. This high-end (with a low-key feel) beach neighborhood is a work of art in itself and makes a strong, stylish statement to anyone who visits.

ROAD TRIP still very relaxed. Bikes, flip-flops, and golf carts (loaded with kids and coolers) are the transportation of choice. Some would consider the “town center” of Seacrest the go-to village for all of South Walton, home to one of its few convenience stores, several cute shops and great restaurants.

financing available

ROSEMARY BEACH Rosemary Beach’s 107 acre grassy stretch along 30A is a planned “new urbanist” community and an architectural feast, with influences from the West Indies, New Orleans, Charleston and St. Augustine. This town is host to a variety of outdoor festivals throughout the year, a popular farmers market, concerts and charity events. Grand homes and carriage houses are connected by pedestrian paths.

BLUE MOUNTAIN Named after the area’s brilliant blue lupine flower, Blue Mountain sits at a slight incline compared to the rest of South Walton, and this provides an unforgettable sight. In addition to the gorgeous views of turquoise water from the top of this beach neighborhood Blue Mountain Beach is home to a variety of accommodations - from cozy beach cottages to luxurious new homes. Visitors find eclectic restaurants, locally owned boutiques and art studios. And finally, while SANDESTIN, SEASCAPE and MIRAMAR are not technically “on” 30A, they’re just minutes away - around the corner on Hwy 98 - and are often considered part of the “16 Beach Communities” of 30A.

NEW COLUMN: THE NEXT GENERATION local high school seniors tell us what they’re thinking

A TEEN’s Take on Life & Death

I

If you’re a local high school senior and have something to say, please send submissions for the May/June issue to claire@locallifepublishing.com.

I LOVE THE SAYING, “YOLO.” (You Only Live Once). Living life to your fullest every day is something I believe in; but it took on a whole new meaning for me last January when my Aunt Mary passed away. Mary Barkley - wife to her high school sweetheart Paul, beloved East Cobb middle school science teacher, and the mother of six children, was enjoying a well deserved vacation with her three closest, lifelong friends - just laughing, holding hands, and riding the waves. Out of no where, a powerful rip current swept in. The friends fought hard to hold on to each other; but the current was so strong that Mary’s hand slipped away, pulling her down and away from safety. Minutes later, she was found unconscious further down the shore. She was life-flighted to the nearest hospital, but Mary was gone. This was the first time death had ever touched me. All I could think about was, “Why Mary?” I had so many questions. Why was a faithful wife, dedicated mother, passionate fifth grade science teacher, someone so close to God, and most importantly lover of life taken from us so prematurely? How was her family supposed to go on without their rock? What if this was my mother? How could anyone get over this? Before her drowning, I never realized how fine and fragile the line between life and death is. One minute you’re enjoying a carefree moment at the beach with your best friends, and then in the next few minutes you’re gone. Eye-opening to me. Earth shattering to many others. My dad is one of eleven siblings, so my extended family is very extended. Because Mary and my uncle had been high school sweethearts, she had been a happy part of our family get-togthers my whole life. Getting all fifty of us together {as well as Mary’s six living siblings, their spouses and their children} to support and remember Mary was very special for me. Seeing my aunts, uncles, and cousins, the people I had looked up to for my whole life so broken was shocking. Grieving

40

someone who had given so much in her life, and was the perfect role model was different than anything I had ever experienced before. But, seeing the faith and support system she had (and I have) was comforting and helped tremendously. I never realized how strong my family was, and how much I will always need them. Still, death is not easy. Ever. Although this was such a tragic loss to us all, there were happy moments. One that sticks out in my mind is when her special needs daughter, May, sung, “You Are So Beautiful,” {Joe Cocker} at the wake. Even though wake was my darkest memory of the whole process, when everyone - together with May - began singing this song I felt it was a sign from Mary tell us all, “You will be okay.” This was something I was so grateful for and will cherish forever. Since then, I have had many reflective moments. I found myself wanting to comfort my younger brother and sister to let them know our family will be okay and wanting to tell my parents how grateful I am for them. How do I want to be remembered? Would I be remembered positively? How have I touched others’ lives? Have I made a meaningful impact on the people in my life? I decided then that I want to be remembered just like Mary: kind, hard worker, strong faith, passionate, funny, a leader and a listener. Traits I sometimes have but am making an effort to exhibit daily. Life is so fragile, and many times, we don’t realize it until it is gone. There will always be a hole in my heart where Mary was. But, what I have realized is that I don’t need to fill this hole. If the person has made a big enough impact, the hole can never be filled. This hole reminds me not only of Mary, but of the person I need to be everyday. Live life like Mary. Live life to the fullest. Be memorable. Because, YOLO. Our columnist - a local senior in high school - decided at press-time she was too shy to have her name and picture attached to this article :-) - We get it! No worries. We’ve been there too. Anticipating the Fall, our budding journalist is trying to decide between UVA and UGA. (GO DAWGS!) www.myroswellmagazine.com

Visual Arts, Performing Arts and a Wine Garden for Tasting Local and Regional Wines.

Whether we like it or not, social media is now part of our everyday lives. Today, more than ever before, a picture really is worth a thousand words. Why? Perhaps because rarely do any of us have the attention span or the patience to sit still long enough to actually READ 1,000 words.

QUILT SHOW RECOGNIZES NATIONAL PARKS

When we get all dressed up and are looking our best what do we usually do first? We take lots of pictures. And, wouldn't we all agree that when it's springtime in Roswell, the weather warms and the dogwoods and azaleas are blooming, it’s sort of like the city is all dressed up? It's that time of year again for the city to show off a little bit.

THE BULLOCH HALL QUILT GUILD is hosting a special exhibit of quilted art which represents the 59 designated National Parks in the US from March 9 thru 18.

Therefore, we decided to ask for pictures of Roswell looking her best.

There are 177 pieces in the collection. Each National Park is represented by 3 originally designed quilted illustrations - one landscape measures 20" X 40". Some feature flora and fauna unique to the park. This exhibit holds a historical connection to Bulloch Hall.

Although we are certain you will submit your image(s) unconditionally because of your affection for Roswell, we still want to offer a little incentive - a chance to win a prize is your “thank-you”. A $100 gift card to the photographer of our favorite photo - good for dining at one of Roswell’s locally owned restaurants. The winner will be announced May 1st on our Facebook page, as well as in the May/June 2018 issue of Roswell Magazine.

Bulloch Hall is the childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of President Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore was instrumental in the creation of the U.S. National Parks. Donna DeSoto's has published a great book about this collection.

Communicate (with a photo) what you like most about Roswell - the type of photo one might see and immediately think, "Yup. That's definitely Roswell." Please submit 1 - 5 of your best images representing what you believe makes Roswell, well, Roswell. DEADLINE APRIL 13, 2018. Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, the day when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with His disciples. Most notably, that was the night Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other. Christ's "mandate" is commemorated on Maundy Thursday---"maundy" being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means "command." It was on the Thursday of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said these words to his disciples: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you.." (John 13:34).
