Local artist Ford Smith lifts the spirits of Roswell residents who have been sheltering in place for almost two months, with his daily outdoor art exhibit.

Daily Art Escape Six weeks ago, fine art galleries and museums

closed their doors to the public, seemingly overnight.

That’s when world-renowned Roswell artist Ford Smith observed an increasing number of families walking by his lakeside home. Social distancing and shelter-inplace orders had the positive effect of drawing families outside for some fresh air and some space.

The artist had an idea that inspired his wife, Cristi Smith, to create an outdoor public art exhibit featuring a different, original piece of Ford’s art, every day. She set an easel in their driveway, included serene ‘spa-like’ music, and wrote an introduction letter to their neighbors.

The exhibit, “Ford Smith’s Daily Art Escape” would be a real treat, because although residents of the East Spring Lake community had known about their neighbor, “the famous artist”, many had never seen his paintings in person.

The couple has really enjoyed the effect the public art exhibit has had on neighbors driving, biking, walking, skateboarding, or running past the home every day.

Cristi tells us, “Our neighbors are very protective about the art. If the wind picks up (as it has recently), someone always makes sure we know.”

Friends of Mimosa Hall & Gardens A group of grassroots Roswell residents provided the momentum behind the City of Roswell’s purchase of Mimosa Hall & Gardens from a private owner in 2017.

The group formed Friends of Mimosa Hall (FOMH) and are focused on sustainable preservation of the massive historic home and property. FOMH’s current effort is raising funds for the added costs of a solar roof, which would make Roswell home to the oldest ‘net zero’ home in the U.S. The Millennials Project (10U40) designated FOMH as its beneficiary of proceeds from the 10U40 Awards event because its ‘friends’ are committed to sustainable restoration. This is right in line with Millennials’ values.

What has Deborah been up to during COVID19 restrictions?

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Deborah has relied a lot on her relationships, as well as, her creative problem solving skills, and she continues to serve her clients - despite very limited access to the Courts.

For fun, Deborah is staying connected through Zoom meetings and “happy hours.� She and her husband adopted a second puppy, and are getting her acclimated to her new home.

Deborah Pittman

Deborah Pittman moved to Roswell in 2015 and in July of 2017 met her husband, Andrew Pittman at Gate City Brewery in downtown Roswell. Andrew grew up in the Roswell area and attended Centennial High School. The couple purchased their first home together a year ago, deciding they wanted to stay in Roswell, and plant roots.

Since moving to Roswell, Deborah has become intentionally involved in the community, and she was involved with Team in Training, an organization which raises funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She stays active by participating in OTP Sports, a local run club, and playing ALTA tennis mixed doubles with Andrew.

Deborah has been a member of the Rotary Club of Alpharetta and helps organize events and projects which bolster our North Fulton community, including the End Polio Now campaign, supporting the North Fulton Community Charity’s capital fund, cranking ice-cream for Miss Mary and the Drake House, and sending Shelter Boxes to communities effected by national disasters.

Deborah is a partner attorney at Miles, Hansford, and Tallant, a full-service law firm which specializes in several fields of litigation. She focuses mostly on Family Law, Criminal Defense, and Mediation Services; where her role is to professionally and compassionately represent her clients through some of the most

difficult moments of their lives.

During this unprecedented time in world history, CLOVID19, Deborah has actively been participating in efforts to raise funds and support for local non-profits that are continuing to serve the community. She is on the planning committee of her Rotary club’s virtual Donation Derby which will take place on May 2nd. The event will support groups like Homestretch, Drake House, NFCC, End Polio Now, the Giving Kitchen, and Meals by Grace. During this time Deborah and her club members continue their daily “bread run” from Fresh Market to North Fulton Community Charities.

Much like her philanthropic efforts, Deborah’s success in her career is driven by the importance that she places on establishing healthy, long-standing relationships with others. She hopes to encourage other young professionals to become engaged with their local communities and lead by example.

“I believe being instilled with the confidence to simply be yourself, as unique - or different - as that may be, is one of the most powerful gifts any parent or mentor can give to another. We each bring something unique to the table and benefit most when we use our gifts or perspectives collectively,” added Deborah.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Brian and his partner Pat Rains have reworked their facility at Gate City Brewing Co. into a santizer ‘factory,’ making sanitizer for the public and the healthcare workers on the front lines.

Brian Borngesser

Brian Borngesser is co-owner, and co-founder, for Roswell’s Gate City Brewing Company (GCB), at the corner of Magnolia and Canton Street, in historic Roswell. GCB is a malt beverage manufacturer with an onsite taproom for guests to hang out, listen to live music, and enjoy the the vibe in an industrial chic, often open air building.

as a husband, dad and business owner. When he can, he makes time for running, woodworking, and mountain biking in his spare time, as well as camping with his family. Brian graduated from Georgia College and State University with a BA in Marketing, which has been helpful in his career and with GCB.

As CEO for the company, he manages the day to day functions of the business, including managing the sales staff, distributors, in-market accounts and the taproom. He is the current VP of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, and has served previously as its Educational Chair, and Brian is a Board member with RoswellNEXT. Past affiliations include the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, and STAR House, where he is involved in planning events like the Roswell Beer Festival.

As a business owner, Brian strives to motivate his employees to be the best versions of themselves, he says, by leading by example. To him, this means two things: working hard everyday and giving back to our community. He deliberately leverages his and Gate City’s influence in the community to impact and raise funds for a great number of local, charitable organizations, such as the Children’s Development Academy, Homestretch, STAR House Foundation, Out of Darkness, and Wellspring Living, among many others.

Brian and his wife, Tammy, have been married for twelve years, and the couple has two school-aged daughters, named Addyson and Sydney. It’s busy around the Borngesser household! A former college athlete, Brian likes to stay active, which is not as easy

Brian says, “It feels like this community has completely adopted me, my family, and our business, as their own. I looked a long time for a place like Roswell to call home, one that provided me with the opportunity to give my children a life I never had.”

“At Visit Roswell, we’ve completely shifted our efforts to focus on local businesses in the local market. Our marketing strategy has become all about keeping our hospitality community front and center and continuing to drive opportunities their way, even in times as uncertain as these. An example is our daily restaurant list, which highlights all of our restaurants and food and beverage partners offering curbside pickup and delivery during the pandemic.”

Andy Williams helps bolster the city’s tourist industry and assets to out of town markets, as executive director of Visit Roswell GA (Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau - RCVB) since January 2019. He manages a team of marketing and salespeople at the RCVB, and works with other community organizations to increase exposure and encourage visitors to choose Roswell, making Andy’s job crucial to the growth and success of Roswell.

Andy graduated from Georgia Southern University (2006) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Tourism & Commercial Recreation, and has remained steady in tourism ever since. The GA Chapter of Meeting Professionals International (MPI Georgia) is a leading tourism organization in the state, and he served as VP of Membership, VP of Finance, and past President, and currently serves on the board of directors for the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus.

Southeast. Andy was very involved in the Rotary Club of Morgan County, even serving as its youngest president ever for 2009-2010 year. As a member of Roswell Rotary, Andy has volunteered in scholarship review opportunities, and is quite committed to the local chapter.

Other impressive community involvement includes serving the Roswell Arts Fund on the selection committee for 2020 Art Around Roswell sculpture tour, supporting the Childrens’ Development Academy, Historic Roswell Beautification Project, Lunches for Learning through Hearts for Honduras, The Cottage School, Be the Voice and Homestretch. Through involvement on the planning committee for the inaugural Roswell Food & Beverage Festival, the team’s efforts resulted in a $6,000 donation to Homestretch.

He and his wife, Ryan, fell in love with the community, as the type of place to raise their family, and purchased a home in Brookfield Country Club. Andy, Ryan and their two daughters, Morgan and Adele, frequent Roswell’s parks, restaurants and community events.

Andy has reignited the Tourism Ambassadors program, communicating how vital tourism is to our local economy, and he serves as a key stakeholder on the Mayor’s Movie Task Force initiative to lead film efforts. He is set to graduate from Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce’s “Leadership North Fulton” program, this summer. .

What has Jasmin been up to during COVID19 restrictions?

Jasmin has been busy adapting the restaurant workflows by switching to a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;to-goâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; model of serving customers. One of the first to sign up for the School Meal Program, GP has been donating over 100 meals per week to children dependent on school lunches. She has been leading the team, with Conner, to provide catering and food donations to hospital workers and first responders.

Jasmin Willis J

Jasmin Willis has lived in Roswell her entire life, with the exception of a few years in Athens, while earning her degree in Marketing from the University of Georgia. Jasmin began studying baking and pastry at Le Cordon Bleu. She has since combined her two forms of higher education to open Gracious Plenty Bakery & Breakfast, a boutique restaurant in the heart of downtown Roswell.

Along with serving breakfast and lunch, Gracious Plenty has a heavy presence in catering and pop-up dinners. As Owner and Pastry Chef, she works hard to develop new ways to reach the Roswell community and expand the brand. She is involved and a part of all daily operations at GP, from managerial duties to washing dishes and pouring coffee.

Giving back to the community is not a part-time endeavor for Jasmin and her staff, giving back is a way of life. She is excited to begin plans to start her own charitable organization designed to feed high school students and teach them about the food industry. Jasmin was a featured chef at events for

Outside of work and philanthropy, Jasmin enjoys spending time with her newborn, Charlie, and her fiancée and business partner, Conner, who is also a Roswell native. She is also an avid fan of water sports and enjoys gardening in her free time.

Jasmin adds, “I have learned to use negativity as fuel, rather than react to it. I can appreciate a negative person for helping me grow. I admire Chrysta with everything that I am. I contribute a lot of who I am to her and her mentoring me.”

She adds, “Our motto, printed on all of our menus, reads: “All are welcome. Hate has no place here.”

Michael Agurkis M

After graduating with a BBA in Banking & Finance from the University of Georgia, Michael Agurkis moved to Roswell to begin his career in financial services. For the fifteen years, he has helped his clients with financial planning and wealth management in his role with CommonWealth Financial Planners, he and took over as president, and owner of the firm, in 2019. His firm is responsible for over $150 million in client assets.

He tells us, “For me, this quote reminds me to avoid the trap of “keeping up with the Joneses” because that will distract from the truly important things in life – faith, family and friends. I saw Mr. Pierson’s painting “Spectacular Journey” hanging in Ann Jackson Gallery 15 years ago when I first started with CommonWealth, and I’ve loved the quote ever since. Don’t let envy be the thief of joy; live your life to the fullest and don’t worry about what others are doing.

Roswell Rotary is a big part of his community life, having been an active member since 2014, and he currently serves as the Foundation Chair, raising funds for the Rotary Internationa. He is especially proud, however, of the work he and his peers accomplished at the 2018 Rotary Golf & Tennis Tournament, which raised over $209,000 for local charities.

Michael and his wife, Sarah, have been married for ten years and have two daughters. They are very involved in their parish, St. Ann’s Catholic Church, active in several ministry efforts with the whole family. In his free-time Michael enjoys chess, boating, shooting sports, and woodworking. In his work and philanthropic efforts, Michael strives to lift others up and give back to the community which accepted him over fifteen years ago.

“I’ve really enjoyed becoming a part of the Roswell community these past 15 years. It’s a great place to have a business, raise a family, and chase your dreams.

Amber Woolfolk, after graduating from Mercer University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership (with a focus on servant leadership, as well as Civic Engagement), recognized that many students needed financial support to cover the costs of tutoring and test prep.

With that in mind, Amber established Solve Cares Inc. and Solve Tutoring, (www.solvetutoring.com) both of which are designed to assist students from the third grade to the twelfth in improving test scores, problem solving abilities, and critical thinking skills.

Not only does Amber actively work to help educate the youth of Roswell, she also volunteers for numerous charitable organizations, several of which focus on education.

These organizations include the United Way of Atlanta African American Partnership Program, City of South Fulton Mayor‘s Education Task Force as CoChair, the Georgia Alliance for Social Justice, and the Youth Rise Ministry at Eagle Nest Church.

Through her business and her involvement in said organizations, Amber has established herself as a pillar of support for the community’s youth and an advocate for families and students who lack a voice for one reason or another.

Amber has worked and resided in Roswell since 2011. She is a member of Eagles Nest Church and enjoys painting, photography, and spending time with her children, Alexis and Joshua, who are students at Centennial High School. She enjoys visiting natural treasures and historic sites throughout the U.S., and is thrilled to continue her work in the sphere of education and to help facilitate the next generation’s success.

“I am an advocate for families and students that have lost their way by helping them practice consistency and accountability in academics. I am just getting started and can’t wait to see what the future holds,” added Amber. “I try to always wake with intention, walk in integrity and make the right choices.”

Brendan Walsh has had family in Roswell for over 20 years. His father, a homebuilder, taught his son to swing a hammer as soon as he could walk. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction from Virginia Tech, he started his career as a project manager with Ryan Homes.

In 2009, Brendan moved to Roswell to start his home building business, Lehigh Homes & Development (www.lehighinc.com) and oversees all aspects of the company, including operations, sales, marketing, customer experience, design, and company growth.

Lehigh builds brownstones, bungalows and custom homes primarily in historic Roswell, which combine historical appearances with artistic architectures and interiors, all designed for modern day living. The company’s first project was in Roswell, just off Canton Street and his company continues to build the majority of their homes around historic Roswell.

He and his wife, Kendyl, are members of Chapel Roswell and enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and spending time at the lake with their four children, Townsend, Sullivan, Ella-Hayes, and Matilda (who will soon also be swinging hammers).

Brendan is actively involved in helping the youth of Roswell as he is a board member of the Roswell North Elementary Foundation and is a volunteer coach for several Roswell Recreation sports teams.

He has used his experience with construction and design to help build the first ever outdoor classroom at Roswell North and as a youth sports coach he strives to teach his player the values of teamwork, leadership, and work ethic.

Recently named Young Professional of the Year, by the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau, he also serves on the Design Review Board for the City of Roswell, coaches multiple sports team’s for Roswell Youth Sports Program, and is involved with the mentor program at Roswell The homes constructed by Brendan’s company have helped turn downtown Roswell into one of the most desirable places to live in all of Georgia and he looks to continue to impact the city through residential development.

What has Stephanie been up to during COVID19 restrictions?

I have spent the past few weeks enjoying the slower pace with my family. We have taken our puppy on more walks than I can even count, put together puzzles, played games and more. I have adjusted to my new role as a teacher while keeping up with the day-to-day operations of STAR House. The majority of our STAR House families are living minute by minute. My team and I have poured our energy into keeping in touch with our families by phone or text, delivering meals, mailing them letters, and assisting our students with their school work. It truly takes a village and I am so proud of our community for stepping up and helping those in need during this surreal time.

Stephanie Christiansen S

Stephanie Christiansen’s family has resided in Roswell for nearly 30 years. Soon after moving here in the second grade, she became active in the community through participation in a variety of athletics and academic clubs.

Her two children, Jack and Stella, have continued that tradition by partaking in cheerleading, Roswell Performing Arts, Roswell Santos soccer, and Roswell Recreation lacrosse. Stephanie’s parents, Rick and Sharon Huddleston, are contributing members of Temple Beth Tikvah and still live in Roswell to this day.

Stephanie graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Speech Language Pathology, and now works as the Executive Director of STAR House Foundation. STAR House Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Roswell, that provides after-school tutoring and mentoring for at-risk children throughout North Fulton County, currently serve over 300 children.

As Director, Stephanie strives to enrich our community by encouraging academic success in these children, empowering them for lifelong achievement. Stepha-

nie works closely with the City of Roswell and Fulton County Schools to provide life-changing services to students and their families.

She also leads the charge for the organization’s signature fundraiser, the Roswell Beer Festival, which in 2019 brought in $120,000 net for STAR House. Along with her work at STAR House, Stephanie is also involved in several organizations, which aim to encourage social and economic growth in Roswell, including the North Fulton Poverty Taskforce and RoswellNEXT. Her involvement outside of STAR House has helped Stephanie establish herself as a supportive member of the community, who is determined to do everything she can to help others. Stephanie and her family have called Roswell home for the better part of 3 decades, and she feels privileged to be able to have a direct impact on the lives of those in her community.

“I continue coming into work almost every single day, making sure our projects are still moving forward, and our parks, facilities, and historic homes are safe. I continue to plan for upcoming projects, and help lead our project team preparing for the future. It is our department’s goal, when this situation is resolved, that our parks and facilities will be in great shape and ready for the public to enjoy again!”

Taylor Smith is project manager for the City of Roswell’s award-winning Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department, working in the department for 14 years. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education - Recreation, Leisure Studies-Natural Resources, from the University of Georgia.

In his professional role, Taylor oversees the planning, design, construction, and execution of deliverables for the majority of the projects his department handles. His hope is each project will provide long-lasting, sustainable, sensible and safe recreation for our community.

One of the projects Taylor is particularly excited about is the preservation of Mimosa Hall and Gardens. Over the past 3 years Taylor and his team have worked at Mimosa Hall to help protect, revitalize and stabilize the home and property. By preserving an important piece of Roswell’s culture and history, Taylor hopes to have an even greater impact on the city.

Through his membership in ELGL (Engaging Local Government Leaders) and GRPA (Georgia Parks and Recreation Association), Taylor works to enhance the recreation experiences of all Georgians.

Taylor was recently awarded employee of the year; and this acknowledgment has served to remind him of the importance of setting a good example for others. Through his work, Taylor has the ability to impact the lives of countless Roswell citizens and he plans on continuing to make the most of this opportunity.

Taylor volunteers as a coach for Roswell Recreation basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. He and his wife, Kimberly, work with the Children’s ministry at Northside Baptist Church in Roswell. The two, along with their children, Connor and Addison, enjoy spending time outdoors participating in activities like boating, swimming, and traveling. ”Always do the next right thing.” -Mack Hannah. This man had a huge impact in my life; this simple statement is so powerful - and easily lost in today’s culture. It is my goal to keep moving forward, making the best and right decisions for my life, family, and those impacted by my choices. Jonathan Golden, has lived his entire life in Roswell, with the exception of schooling - the time he spent earning his Bachelors in Exercise Physiology at Georgia College. Deeply ingrained in the community, both of his parents own businesses in Roswell and Jonathan (Jonny) runs an international NGO - a not for profit organization that operates independently of any government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue: the Do Good Initiative.

“I believe that if you have a dream, no matter how crazy it may sound, just go for it, because soon it may not be there.”

Through Land of a Thousand Hills coffee shop, Do Good Initiative helps build flourishing communities with holistic solutions, seeking to meet social, economic, and spiritual needs in the most sustainable way possible. Each Do Good project is chosen based on needs which are communicated by local leadership..

Jonny plays drums for St. Peters Place Anglican Church and whenever he is not working, he enjoys attending Cross Fit NBK and Tiger Academy Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, both of which are located in Roswell.

This year, with the help of over 30 Roswell businesses, the NGO opened a 3,000 square foot medical facility in a remote area of Rwanda. Do Good also worked with Cross Fit North Fulton to plan an obstacle course race at the Roswell-Alpharetta Public Training Center.

Over 100 community members attended the event and through their efforts they raised $2,500 for the Roswell Fire and Police Foundation.

Along with his work with Do Good, Jonathan is on the board of advisors for another local NGO, that works with abused women and connects them to care and he is graduating with a Masters in Humanitarian Health from John Hopkins University in May of 2019.

He is eager to continue working side-by-side with Roswell’s businesses and public organizations to not only bolster the community of Roswell, but to have a positive impact on other communities as well.

Jonathan adds, “Collaboration breeds success. The medical center could not have happened without full collaboration with the Rwanda Ministry of Health (for operations) and 30 Roswell businesses (for construction). It may have been easier to build the clinic by applying for a grant, but it wouldn’t have been near as meaningful.”

Roswell small business owners injected a little fun into the vibe, early on, by showing us how to get married in the month of social distancing > a drive-by wedding, Vegas in the deep South.

A group of Roswell small business owners have come together to offer a new kind of wedding celebration in our era of social distancing...The Drive Thru I Do. Instead of giving up on large celebrations of love, Naylor Hall event planner Sunny Bailey thought outside the box in the days following the first announcements of ‘social distancing’ requirements.

She wanted to “do” something; and she wanted to highlight some of their favorite vendors and business partners in downtown Roswell. What she settled on (drive-thru i do) has gotten local and regional press, spreading joy at a time of collective uncertainty.

She and Abbey Fitzgerald (her right hand woman at Naylor Hall) enlisted the help of the Roswell hospital-

ity industry, and they adapted a Vegas style wedding to a wedding in the Deep South, during a pandemic.

The other participants included, local restaurateur Ryan Pernice; Gate City Brewery owner, Pat Rains; multi-instrumentalist, David Ellis, and photographer David Deiner.

Abbey explained that they wanted to inject a little joy, optimism and hope into the community to counter the negativity, so prevalent in the beginning of COVID19 realities.

The happy couple works for one of Naylor Hall’s catering partners, Chef Cary’s Cuisine. Patrick Cantrell and Alexandria Spanoudis - Cantrell were, in fact, actually married two years ago; but they were thrilled to be involved.

Ryan Pernice, aka “The Right Reverend of Roswell Chicken”, is the owner of three acclaimed restaurants: ; Osteria Mattone, Table & Main, and Coalition Food & Beverage. Instead of shutting his doors Ryan has been doing a thriving take-out business and in his spare time gave out over 1000 free meals to local residents last week.

You can’t have a wedding celebration without a toast, and that’s where Pat Rains, “The Bearer of Beer”, becomes invaluable. Pat opened the first craft brewery in Roswell - Gate City Brewing Co. - in 2014 with Brian Borngesser. Besides brewing an amazing

assortment of beer, Pat & Brian created “Freedom Fighter IPA” to help fight human trafficking and bring awareness to the issue.Even a drive thru wedding needs music, and that’s where we find David Ellis, our “Mansion Musician”. David is a talented multi-instrumentalist who can play wedding classics on the violin and shift in a moment to down home music on his Gibson banjo.

What would a wedding be without pictures for posterity, and that’s where our “Paparazzi Professional”, David Deiner with Atlanta Artistic Wedding Photography, takes charge. David trained professionally as photo historian for the National archives, but he loves sharing the joy of wedding day photography. ”This video was so much fun to make! We only had to do a few takes to get it perfect, and we did not script anything,” Abbey says.

It was 75 degrees and “sunny” (pun intended). Filming was a 5pm, and in all, it took about 45 minutes, getting it just right on the third or fourth take.

Abbey smiles remembering the day, saying, “After each take Sunny drove Patrick and Alexandria through downtown Roswell and all of the passerby got a huge kick out of it! And Ryan Pernice gave a great ceremony, every time. Each one was a little different - and funnier - than the last. He is so natural in front of the camera and had all of us laughing.”

A COMMUNITY RELIEF EFFORT SUPPORTS THE NEWLY FOOD INSECURE Table & Aid offers hot meals to those who find themselves in need due to the current crisis. Guests are welcome to ask for 1-6 meals at no charge, no questions asked, depending upon the size of their family or situation. Meals include a protein, starch & vegetable. Guests can select other necessities – including fruit cups, canned goods, and commodities such as flour, etc - from a “General Store” as supplies allow. Table & Main is located at 1028 Canton Street, Roswell, GA 30075.

Table & Aid has distributed over 1,851 meals since the program started on Tue-Mar-24, averaging 154 meals daily.

“When the crisis hit, we combined all three of our restaurants into one curbside and delivery operation from Osteria Mattone.

That meant Table & Main was available as a resource. We’ve had some success with the takeout program, and our community has been tremendously generous with donations to help Table & Aid get started.
