On August 28, I met Lauren Kress, our new feature photographer, at Campania to shoot the cover story (p. 14). I'd be lying if I said we didn't stick around afterward to enjoy margherita pizza, caprese salad and a "mule di mirtilli," a.k.a. blueberry mule – all so irresistibly fresh! The next day, we all cheered as the Milton Eagles "M'ade" history by defeating our crosstown rival, Alpharetta – 45 to zero – at the second annual Freedom Bowl (p. 18). Big congrats to Coach Adam Clack, all the players and staff on the victory. We wish you the best of luck in the rest of high school football season! I also got a chance to meet with some lovely ladies at City Hall to discuss upcoming events such as Crabapple Fest (p.10) on October 5; Carvin' in Crabapple on October 20; and the Christmas in Crabapple Tree Lighting on November 30. This season is going to be "lit." Surely we'll see each other around!

Milton's annual Crabapple Fest, sponsored by

Crabapple Market, returns on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each year, the City of Milton and the Crabapple Community Association (CCA) host this signature fall festival in the downtown Crabapple district, where more than 30,000 festival goers enjoy antiques, arts and other vendors, local food and drinks, children's activities and college football on the big screen.

Parking along the roads in surrounding neighborhoods or in the Crabapple Market parking lot is strictly prohibited. "This event is a labor of love for the Crabapple Community Association," said Amanda Fuller, executive director of CCA. CCA businesses and neighbors volunteer their time, collaborating with city staff, to make this historic annual event possible.

"Festival goers can browse the more than 80 local artisan vendors, enjoy food from around the globe at any of the 20 food vendors; and they can also take advantage of the great dining and shopping options located in downtown Milton," said Courtney Spriggs, Milton's community outreach and engagement manager. "There will be a great area for the kids, and huge big-screen playing college football games - there is really something for everyone at Crabapple Fest!"

A portion of Crabapple Road will be closed from the Crabapple crossroads intersection of Birmingham Hwy and Broadwell Road down to the roundabout at Heritage Walk. The festival road section will officially close Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, and will remain closed until 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. In addition to portable restrooms, the public bathrooms at Broadwell Pavilion and on The Plaza at City Hall will be open for use. Leashed dog are welcome to attend the festival!

Parking and attendance are free. Parking is available at Crabapple First Baptist Church, Crabapple Crossing Elementary School, and Milton High School, and a courtesy shuttle will run throughout the day from Milton High School.

After the roaring success of Campania’s debut in Alpharetta, owner Jennifer Muller opened a second location in the heart of Crabapple last year. An official grand opening was held on December 18 to welcome a new set of guests – this time from Milton – who were eager to explore the authentic Italian menu and adjust their standards to the city’s changing pizza paradigm. A central location determines the success of most bricks and mortar, but it’s more than convenience that keeps Milton residents coming back to Campania. The inviting atmosphere, quality of service and dedicated staff combine to transform first-timers into regulars. General Manager Gene Hunter II explains, “the small town feel where everyone knows and cares about one another makes running the restaurant that much more special.” Campania is highly invested in the Milton community, belonging to the Shamrockin’ For A Cure Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; and contributing to the athletic departments at both Cambridge and Milton High Schools. Campania's next big event is Crabapple Fest on Saturday, October 5 along Crabapple Road, which runs tangent to the establishment. On this day, the restaurant will open earlier than usual – from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. – and set up a special outdoor bar. The only difference between sipping Italian wine in Naples and Milton is the view! The spacious covered patio seats up to 60 guests and offers a 180-degree view of Milton's lively downtown. To reserve the patio for your next event, contact Campania and speak with the general manager. Equipped with misters and heaters, the outdoor space is ideal for birthdays, rehearsal dinners, graduation parties and corporate gatherings in every season. Campania far exceeds an ordinary pizzeria in the rural suburbs, serving up a slice of Italy in a modern, approachable setting without feeling “watered down.” Their famous wood-fired dome oven is a testament to their authenticity. Hand-crafted by the Stefano Ferraro family and transported from Naples, its “unique design and construction are really the foundation of our pizza." 16 | Milton Life

Cover Story Campania’s best seller is the Margherita Pizza, which was originally created for the Queen of Italy in 1889. Each of the ingredients – San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala and sprig of basil – correlate with the red, white and green on the Italian flag. Another favorite is the Salumi Misti Pizza, made with pomodoro, Italian sausage, Calabrese salami, fior-di-latte mozzarella, fontina and fresh basil. There are ten regulations for pizza Napoletana to be considered authentic. The pizzaiolo, or “pizza maker,” must use certain ingredients exclusively, such as double-zero grade flour and DOP-certified San Marzano tomatoes. Dough must be stretched and opened by hand, then cooked at 900 degrees Fahrenheit in a wood-fired oven. Fewer than ninety seconds is all it takes to transform decorated dough into a genuine Neapolitan meal. “Our goal is to be a fixture in the Milton community for many years to come,” says Gene. “We want to be known as not only a place to come for great food, but a place to gather as a community to smile, laugh and enjoy this journey called life.”

FREEDOM BOWL 2019 RECAP ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE EAGLES' NEST, Milton hosted twelve high school powerhouse programs to compete for the Freedom Bowl trophy. The Eagles claimed victory on Thursday night in a standalone game against their longtime crosstown rival, the Alpharetta Raiders – finishing with a score of 45 to 0. Four more out of six games were played – the last between UMS Wright and Brentwood Academy was cancelled due to weather prior to their flight. The goal of the three-day event was to raise awareness for veterans, with proceeds benefiting wounded warriors and military families; as well as to "educate student athletes, coaches and communities on what a true hero looks like to inspire those to support the ones who protect our great country." Three tenets of the Freedom Bowl are character, team work and leadership on and off the field, but the Eagles also live and play by a creed of their own: brotherhood, effort and toughness (BET). After all, they're an investment in the spirit of your home, so now is not the time to cut corners. While shopping for "the one," keep a sharp eye out for a deep - but not quite ripe - shade of orange; a smooth, firm body with a flat bottom; and a strong, sturdy stem. Perform a pat-down to also ensure the pumpkin is hollow, which makes it easier to carve when the time comes.

We've compiled a list of (somewhat obvious) ideas to make the most of your pumpkin after it no longer serves as decor: pumpkin pie, bread and muffins, pumpkin spice lattes, roasted pumpkin seeds, jack-o-lantern, outdoor planter, face mask, canned frozen pureĂŠ, compost, wildlife or deer feed with caution. Five years ago, after deciding to plant roots and grow her business in Milton, Dr. Sarah Druckman began working mobile and from her home office. This September marks one year since her bigger vision came to life as a multi-use space and holistic boutique in Downtown Alpharetta – the Alpharetta Wellness Collective (AWC). “I just fell in love with the area," said Dr. Sarah. “I had no idea when I moved to Georgia for chiropractic school that I would wind up in such an amazing community with such an amazing focus on horses." She also serves equine and canine clientele and is certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. As an equestrian of 30 years, Dr. Sarah thoroughly enjoys her weekly visits to local families and farms in Milton.

“I absolutely love being welcomed into a family’s home,” she said. “I feel that it is a much more intimate and personalized approach to healthcare.” Extending her service beyond just people is one of many ways Dr. Sarah sets herself apart in a city saturated with traditional chiropractic care. Her services include chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, taping, cupping, cold laser and essential oils. All of her client sessions are one-on-one and last for at least twenty minutes. "I am very 'real' with [my clients]," said Dr. Sarah. "I like to really get to know them and what they are doing on a daily basis that may be affecting their health and then I take those cues to help them to heal." When she found "an awesome little space just a few blocks away," she saw an opportunity to manifest her dream of owning a wellness center rather than a traditional chiropractor practice. Immediately, she rebranded and assembled a group of local practitioners. The Alpharetta Wellness Collective was born.

"In the past year, the amount of growth has been crazy," said Dr. Sarah. "I went from a one woman show in a one room office to hosting a variety of other practitioners at the Alpharetta Wellness Collective." AWC now has a team with massage therapists, an esthetician, a reiki practitioner, a palm reader and vedic astrologist and a health/ life coach.

"The cool thing about AWC is that now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a strong community of other healthcare providers to address the mental, spiritual, chemical and biomechanical issues within the body that may be preventing someone from reaching optimal health," she said. "It really is a one-stop shop for wellness."

To celebrate their first anniversary in business, AWC will host a "client appreciation day" on September 19 with opportunities for great deals, good vibes and relaxation. There will be discounts on massage and chiropractic services, a coffee tasting, a charity raffle featuring giveaways from local businesses, free popsicles from Poplanta, juice and goodies from 3:8 Juice, and complimentary guided meditations. The Disintegrating Student by Jeannine Jannot, Ph.D.

Jeannine Jannot, Ph.D. has lived in Milton for the past 14 years. As a part-time college instructor, academic coach and mother of three, Dr. Jannot is an expert on the subject of child and developmental psychology. On July 14, she released a book called “The Disintegrating Student: Super Smart and Falling Apart,” which explores why otherwise bright, well-adjusted students begin to deteriorate socially, physically and academically. In her career, Dr. Jannot observed a distinct pattern of high-achieving students hitting a wall of stress, anxiety and depression – seemingly out of nowhere. She refers to this as a “rigor tipping point,” where high-achieving students crumble under the pressure to keep succeeding, and suddenly lose the ability to coast on intelligence alone.

“The pressure, rigor and workload challenge their ability to keep pace – so grades start to slip, homework isn’t turned in, motivation tanks and sometimes they avoid school because of stress-related complaints like headaches and stomach aches," says Dr. Jannot. “The Disintegrating Student” is a wide-lens view of burnout. Dr. Jannot not only addresses why it happens, but how to remediate it at the source. She originally sought to enlighten parents who were at a loss about their suffering children; but it has proved beneficial to educators and students as well. When asked what she wants readers to take away from her book, Dr. Jannot said she hopes parents and educators will become more astute at recognizing the early signs of struggle, and intervene before it gets worse – something inevitable if left unchecked. At the end of the book, Dr. Jannot provides a list of 77 tips to alleviate stress, reduce anxiety and build skills such as time management and organization. She also emphasizes the importance of communication between kids and their parents. Super-smart students are more likely to try and deal with it on their own than to ask for help. But it’s ok to ask for help, and it’s ok to offer it. Increased communication should not be underestimated as a remedy. This book is a great resource for parents, students and educators – offering simple, practical ways to help children embrace what’s going right in their life, address what’s going wrong, and then develop the appropriate skills needed to be well-adjusted, balanced, and successful in both school and in life.
