The weather is warming and this makes me a happy girl. There is so much to do outside and around town beginning in April---and we can’t wait for you to read all about it. We live, work, shop, eat, play and pray in Alpharetta just like you. And we are excited to share some of the neat things happening down the street. It’s truly a pleasure to be producing our fourth issue of Alpharetta Magazine. We have received great feedback and suggestions from the community and have incorporated many of those ideas herein. Alpharetta Arts Streetfest Returns for its 12th Year on Memorial Weekend

The City of Alpharetta and Splash Festivals are excited to present the 12th Annual Alpharetta Arts Streetfest on Memorial Day weekend- May 28, 29 and 30, 2016. This 3-day event WHO will host more than 90 colorful artisans from around the country will showcase their works in the Alpharetta Historic District. Festival-lovers and art enthusiasts will have the chance to experience a wide variety of original art, music, amazing food and FREE hands-on art activities for children.

many students to one teacher makes one-on-one instruction nearly impossible. Pro-tip: The adequate amount of student teacher ratio is 10:1 or 20:2, it is important that the ratio is just right. If there are too few students, there will be less social interaction, so children may get bored quickly. A class of 9/10 will be a good social atmosphere and will also challenge the child to perform. EQUIPMENT: All STEM fields need the students to work hands-on. It is essential that the student gets their individual parts or laptops/ desktops to work with. This will enable your child not only to learn at their own pace, but to actually come out with a sense of achievement. Pro- tip: Does the provider have individual machines for students. Are there any hidden costs associated? QUALITY: Quality equipment is needed to ensure quality learning. For instance, if you are trying to run a graphic software on a chrome book, it simply won’t work! And the student will get frustrated. Whether they have PCs or Macs, the configuration of the device is important. Are the programs built around cutting edge technology and are they laying a solid foundation for advancement? Pro Tip: What kind of machines do they use? Example: an EV3 is a newer model robot than NXT’s; A laptop should have enough RAM (min 4GB) and Hard drive space (500GB+) etc. One of the latest buzz in tech is ‘3D’ and programming languages like JAVA never get old. VARIETY: You want your child to be engaged and try out various things in the summer. Variety will enable your child to explore differ-

ent aspects of the very vast technology field and determine what they like best. Pro-Tip: If a camp has variety in their offerings, you will have more options for your child; and what more, you might even get multi-enrollment discounts! AGE DIVISION: For the class to run at an equal pace, it is important that the students are grouped properly. If not, the older students might end up moving faster than the younger ones. And in the end, the take away is very little. Pro-tip: Check if the elementary and middle school ages are grouped together or separately. RUNNING FROM ARTHRITIS

RUNNING AND OTHER HIGH-IMPACT exercises were once thought to be the major cause of arthritis. We now know that’s not completely true. In fact, it may be the lack of physical exercise that can lead to worsening arthritic symptoms. When pain strikes in a hip, knee, ankle or other joint, human nature is to want to avoid doing things that could aggravate the pain. Although that seems logical, this inactivity could actually exacerbate the condition by leading to muscle atrophy and joint stiffness. For those experiencing arthritic pain, frequent walks or occasional runs prescribed by a trusted doctor and possibly with a trainer’s help can be a good first step to help ease the pain and improve symptoms, including inflammation. What’s the magic number for daily steps? Many people have been told they need 10,000 steps a day, but recent evidence shows that just 6,000 steps per day, or roughly three miles, is the perfect number. If you’re starting off, aim for 3,000 steps and gradually increase your steps. The more you walk or run, the better off you may be. How can a runner and walkers ward off arthritis? While its specific cause is only now being understood, obesity, aging, anatomy, genetics and prior injuries are all culprits in the onset of arthritis. Runners and walkers who keep the pounds off and instead

pound the sidewalk are doing themselves a lot of good if done smartly. A study published in the Arthritis Research & Therapy found that some runners in their 60s, 70s and older, who ran an average of 26 miles a week experienced 25 percent less pain than those who were inactive. However, it may differ among individual runners with arthritis; a more moderate 6-10 miles per week in addition to cycling or other cross training may be more beneficial. Am I going to cause wear and tear on my joints? Running and walking is good for the health of your joints because it keeps the muscles strong and well balanced. But make sure you’ve got the proper shoes and that you understand proper running form. How does exercise help the arthritis sufferer? Running and other proper exercise helps build muscles that dynamically protect against joint damage associated with common types of arthritis and the resultant pain and stiffness. Arthritis sufferers who maintain a good range of motion in their joints will allow them to move less stiffly and with less pain and fight back against the progression of arthritis. TASTE OF ALPHARETTA has become an annual tradition for festival goers, families and food connoisseurs. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 12, 5pm-10pm to dine in Historic Downtown Alpharetta at over 60 restaurants in one fun night. Sample delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts from the top chefs in town. Enjoy culinary demonstrations, activities for all ages and entertainment to please every palate. Admission is free, you may purchase food tickets on site at our ticket booths for $.50 each. Restaurants participating in the Taste of Alpharetta will not accept cash (tickets only). Restaurants charge $1-3 per food sample. The Music Stage will have harmonic rock/ folk/R&B bands. A separate Culinary Competition Stage will pair top area chefs against one another in five categories – Best Appetizer/Salad, Best Fast Casual, Best Fine Dining, Best Presentation and Best Dessert. Award winners are presented on the Main Stage at approximately 8:30 p.m. Vote for the People’s Choice Award at the Culinary Competition Stage prior to 7:00 p.m. Party with Metro Atlanta radio stations. MILTON’S CUISINE & COCKTAILS GARDEN DINNERS Executive Chef Derek Dollar Reaps What He Serves

Executive chef Derek Dollar really digs Milton’s Acre, the restaurant’s 1-acre garden, and relishes sharing straight-from-the-vine dining experiences with his guests every spring and summer. His increasingly popular Garden Dinner Series starts again in May, with the more casual Farmyard Chowdown returning to its regular monthly schedule in June. To officially kick off the garden season and whet appetites, Milton’s has also set dates for a Spring and Vine celebration in March and a “sneak preview” Farmyard Chowdown in April. Milton’s has become synonymous with “seed-to-fork” dining in part because of its al fresco dinners, which allow guests to enjoy tantalizing recipes prepared from the approximately 90 different varieties of heirloom fruits vegetables and herbs tended in Milton’s Acre. “While I thought the garden was nice when we started five years ago, I didn’t really understand its incredible value,” Dollar says. “Now I can’t imagine being without it. We plan on growing several thousand pounds of tomatoes this season, for example, which will be used in so many recipes.” On Sunday, April 24 from 6 - 8 p.m., a Farmyard Chowdown beckons with a low country boil, fried chicken and more. Tickets are available at miltonscuisine.com and are $40 per person, including gratuity. The 2016 Garden Dinner Series kicks off May 15. Mouths typically start watering as soon as the first hors d’oeuvres and libations are passed during the evening reception. During this time, guests have an opportunity to tour Milton’s Acre. Then, it’s on to a memorable four-course meal of inspired comfort foods served family style under that stars accompanied by wine pairings and the soothing sounds of a cellist. RECENT NEWS REPORTS have highlighted that our privileged north metro suburbs are in the throes of a heroin crisis, with overdose deaths rising a staggering 2000 % in the last year. Alpharetta alone has experienced five overdose deaths already in 2016. This crisis is a symptom of something much larger: a chronic need for self-medication, especially among older high school students and young adults, due to rising emotional and mental distress caused by a “perfect storm” of performance pressure, over-scheduling, social media and breakdowns in family stability.

Suicide among teens, prescription drug abuse, performance pressure stress are at an all-time high. Partnerships between the clinical communities, law enforcement, elected officials, schools, non-profits, and a growing grassroots movement of concerned parents is bringing hope that the war on heroin is winnable and that a sense of mental wellness can be restored to our communities.

The Hub Family Resource Center aims to be the central point in North Fulton County connecting our families to our community’s resources. The resources are out there. But many don’t know how to find them. This is where The Hub steps in.

And so the mission of The Hub is clear: they provide first of all a central connecting point for families to mental wellness and addiction recovery resources by sitting down with clients, assessing their needs, and matching them with service providers they have researched and profiled.

School officials have spoken out that their resources are overtaxed in trying to deal with mental health, substance abuse, performance pressure and family relationship issues. Local traffic courts are getting a steady flow of teenagers with severe emotional and substance abuse problems, and

MARKET UPDATE & SALES The One Question You MUST Ask at Every Job Interview by Nancy Rabern, Career Coach INTERVIEWING FOR A NEW JOB can be one of the more stressful events in a person’s life, especially if you really need the job. Suddenly your nerves are in high gear and you worry about what you need to say, what you did say, what you didn’t say, what you should have said…the list (Read: OBSESSING) goes on and on. When coaching my clients on interview skills, the main point I try to drive home is that you should be interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. Every interviewer’s worst fear is that you are going to say whatever it takes to get the job, truth be damned. One of the (many) fears that interviewee’s have is that the job is not nearly as great as it is being touted to be. By asking a lot of questions you will get beneath the surface of the job description and be able to determine whether this role is actually a good fit for you. If work/life balance is important to you, ask “What is the company culture like here?” If you are terrified of being micromanaged, ask “What is your management style?” Another interesting result of asking a lot of questions in an interview is that suddenly the situation becomes more balanced. If the person who is interviewing you is happy with the company, they will start to sell you on why you would want to work there. The one question you absolutely must ask at the end of every interview is this, “Is there anything that I’ve said that gives you concern as to why I might not be a good fit for this role?” This question gives the interviewer an opportunity to bring up any concerns they may have without feeling threatened. The key is here to address any issues without getting defensive. For example, if the response you get is “Yes, I’m concerned that you haven’t directly managed anyone yet.” You can respond by saying “I can see why you would be concerned, but I recently took several courses through the American Management Association and am ready to put my knowledge to use!” Asking this one question will give you peace of mind as you leave the interview that you didn’t leave any stone unturned and will hopefully quell the obsessive “after interview” fears.
