How well do you Know Your Heart? Know Your Heart is a screening program designed to determine risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Each Know Your Heart participant receives a personalized report with test results, reviewed with a WellStar Medical Group, Cardiovascular Medicine provider. The consultation also includes risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to determine eligibility and to schedule an appointment.

WellStar North Fulton Hospital is now offering the Know Your Heart program, a screening that can help determine patients’ risk for heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions.
be an early sign of coronary heart disease, and if performed early enough, a CT can help identify disease before permanent damage is done.
The WellStar Know Your Heart program is a preventive, self-pay screening program that offers two levels of testing performed at North Fulton Hospital. Patients can get basic or advanced screenings depending on their age, symptoms and risk factors.
During the consultation patients receive risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations, as well as a personalized report to take home.
“This is a very successful program offered by WellStar Health System and we’re excited to offer it here at North Fulton,” said Hunt Anderson, M.D., medical director of North Fulton’s cardiology program. “Oftentimes we know that big events like heart attacks or strokes could have been prevented if risk factors had been addressed, so it is important to take a proactive approach.” The screening uses a combination of basic labs and a cardiac CT scans to identify heart disease before someone shows any signs or symptoms. The labs look at things like inflammation and cholesterol which can be indicators of heart disease. The cardiac CT calculates a calcium score. This low radiation scan looks at the calcium buildup in the walls of coronary arteries supplying the heart. Calcium may
“Each screening includes a consultation where we give the patient education on how to improve risk factors going forward and if there is any risk that needs to be addressed immediately we arrange everything so the patient can see a cardiologist,” Dr. Anderson said.
Know Your Heart is one of the efforts of the WellStar Cardiac Network to fight cardiac disease and provide people with the support they need to be successful. Unfortunately, heart disease – already the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. – is becoming even more prevalent. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recently released new figures showing a decrease in life expectancy for the first time since the early ‘90s. Experts credit this country’s growing problem with heart disease for these staggering statistics. The “Know Your Heart” screening is available to patients 18 years old and older and is especially good for people with high risk factors for heart disease, such as those with diabetes, hypertension and obesity. To determine eligibility and to schedule an appointment call 770-756-STAR (7827).

His latest studio album, Gotta Get Back, produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers, is yet another masterwork that further expands upon this reputation. A three dimensional talent combining melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice.

MILTON LITERARY FESTIVAL
O
On Saturday, November 11, 2017, Milton City Hall will host two very important community events: a Veterans Day breakfast and the Milton Literary Festival. The annual Veterans Day celebration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a free continental breakfast. The event speaker will be retired Brigadier General A. J. “Tony” Tata, who served 28 years in the United States Army and regularly appears on many of the national news networks commenting on national security matters. In keeping with the literary theme of the day, General Tata is also the author of several novels including Foreign and Domestic and Three Minutes to Midnight. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the third annual Milton Literary Festival kicks off into high gear as more than 40 best-selling authors participate in 12 various panels and workshops. Sessions include historical fiction, veterans as authors, mystery/ suspense, women’s fiction, new authors, and tips. Several New York Times best-selling authors will participate including Bret Witter, Mary Kay Andrews, Karen White, and Joshilyn Jackson. Milton Community Builder Wayne Boston confirms there will be a little something for everyone at this year’s event including several sessions where authors creatively perform scenes from their books. Wayne adds that one of the last sessions of the day, Book an Author, includes authors chatting about their
work in unique, three-minute rapid-fire presentations. This event allows a wonderful opportunity for local book clubs to connect with local authors. The festival will conclude with a Literature Live Cabaret across the street at the Olde Blind Dog, where participating authors bring their characters to life. The Milton Literary Group’s (MLG) primary purpose is to discuss, plan and support literary activities of its members and the community. Downtown Custom Furniture Business Built on Local Connections
WEST OF MAIN Article by Delisa Barkley Images by Chris Hardin Photography
C
Craftsman Russell Orrick has developed his love of quality, one-of-a-kind furnishings into a thriving local business based in downtown Alpharetta. Within his custom furniture and design store West of Main he builds assorted unique pieces, such as kitchen and dining tables, barn doors, shiplap and reclaimed wood accent walls, entry tables, and popular farm tables with matching benches. What is evident to us and shown through his demeanor is his methodical, concentrated work-style and attention to detail. As CEO, Russell allows clients to witness and contribute to the realization of a reclaimed diamond in the rough. Russell’s building career began as a pastime he picked up during his early childhood. Although he did not come from a family of classically trained craftsmen, Orrick learned a lot of what he knows about building from his father, a handyman in his own right. “Growing up, my father built furniture as a hobby,” says Orrick, “I learned at a very young age how gratifying it was to work with your hands to create something.” About two years ago, Orrick’s wife was surfing the internet in search of a new dining room table. Before purchasing the piece of furniture she had decided on, Russell proposed an alternative. “When she showed me the picture from a popular big retailer, I said ‘I can build that,’ so I did.” This piece became one of Russell’s favorite projects and became his first informal advertisement for his company when his wife shared a picture of it on social media. “Soon, I had orders for 20

more furniture and decor installations than I could keep up with,” Russell says. “Eventually, I decided to leave my 12year career in law enforcement to open my own business.” Russell was born in New Jersey but eventually ended up relocating to Alpharetta, graduating from Milton High School (1999) and Georgia Southern University (2003). Now that he is back in North Fulton, Russell has been able to capitalize on Alpharetta’s quickly developing downtown area; he has nestled his current store on Milton Avenue so that residents in his community can have access to a reliable craftsman without stepping outside of their neighborhood. Although there is always pressure for small businesses to expand to increase the quantity of clients they service, Russell finds that the quality of the work produced is what brings in new clients and keeps old ones raving over handcrafted pieces they will cherish for years. “I have chosen to keep my business small to ensure the quality of my work is consistent and my pieces continue to stand-out, differentiating me from other custom furniture builders. “The majority of my clients are right here in
Milton and Alpharetta.” During a project’s conception, Russell meets with his clients either in his shop or at their home to design furniture or decor, respectively. “In the growing society of instant gratification and "Amazon Prime", I have chosen to only work with clients who take the time to meet in person and understand and respect that each piece is handmade.” To ensure his customers continue to be pleased with the product they played a role in helping create, Russell discourages exclusively discussing the project through text or email. “I have found that miscommunication often occurs when trying to design a piece for someone I haven’t met with face-to-face.” Reclaimed wood recovered from old barns and specialty woods from North Georgia saw mills are Orrick’s primary medium, as he says that the “finished product has a patina and feel that you cannot replicate with hardware store lumber.” He picks each piece of wood specifically for the concept

Colorful Fall Plantings
A
GRAB THE KIDS AND TAKE A HAYRIDE THIS FALL! SCOTTSDALEFARMS.COM
After the long, hot summer what a pleasure it is to enjoy the cool crisp Fall temperatures along with beautiful hues of red, orange and gold. Fall is a great time to install your trees, shrubs and perennials since the cooler weather allows new plants to establish more easily plus the water requirements are less. In the Fall, plants direct energy to growing strong roots resulting in plants that will better withstand a potential heat wave next summer. Your local garden center should be able to provide you with a wide selection of plants for the season, along with advice on how to install and care for them. It is gratifying to install your own plants and watch them grow and thrive; but for those of you who would prefer to have others do it for you, your local garden center can provide this service.
With crisp weather and blue fall skies, it’s a fun time of the year to be outdoors with your family. A trip to certain garden centers can be a great time not only to look at plants, but also to enjoy browsing around the pumpkin patch and watching the large trees change colors. Aside from orange jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins big and small, smooth or bumpy, are grown in a variety of shapes and colors, such as blue, white, striped, buckskin, pink, green or black. After selecting your pumpkins and fall decorations at the nursery, stay and relax on a hay ride, see the farm animals and enjoy some of your favorite Fall food, drinks and music. As fun as the Fall season is, we eagerly anticipate the next season, which is our favorite of all, our beloved Christmas season. More about this magical time of year in the next issue.
