HEY, ROSWELL... HOW ARE YOU? And be totally honest – are you hanging in there, or are you hanging by a thread? We are constantly being reminded, consciously or not, that we have to keep going, keep grinding, keep pushing to maintain our livelihoods. We are expected to resume business as usual, if only to keep our heads above water, but we all know things are still not “as usual.” As the days drag on and the weeks fly by, the path of least resistance is not what you’d expect – it’s much easier to get swept up in responsibilities outside ourselves than it is to stop, drop and nap. "An object in motion stays in motion," but people are a different story. Each of us has unique limits, and it’s in our best interest not to push them. Our advice? Give yourself a break before your body does it for you. Self-care should be the first on your list of priorities. You're there for everyone else, so remember to be there for yourself. After all, you can't pour from an empty cup! Self-care is more than a bimonthly bubble bath and a glass of wine; it requires routine. Even then, staying hydrated and and well-rested are just basics. Life is tough right now, and we need a little more TLC "than usual." Call in sick to catch up on sleep. Turn your phone on airplane mode and go “screenless” for an entire day. Clear your schedule and book a day at the spa (When you do, we recommend the whole enchilada – facial, massage, aromatherapy, mud wrap, body polish, the works!).

Don't think of self-care as a "treat," but rather a long-term regimen to keep you feeling good and functioning like a welloiled machine. In a city well-known for its entrepreneurs, the thought of going off the grid (even temporarily) might make us grip our phones a little bit tighter... Instead of brushing off the idea completely, let's adopt self-care as a lifestyle. Let's learn to enjoy life guilt-free, and not take ourselves so seriously. Let's look for ways to incorporate stress relief into our busy schedules. Remember, the optimal worklife balance includes plenty of F-U-N! Regardless of what you consider self-care, Roswell offers a rich variety of opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself. Whether you're floating down the Chattahoochee; exploring the menu at a new restaurant on Canton Street; hiking the Vickery Creek trail; kicking back for a show at Lucky's LIVE! Backyard; brewery-hopping between Gate City and Variant with your coworkers; or trying your hand at all the Summer Sips, there is no shortage of self-care (or fun) to be had in our city. Considering that's the shortlist, we have no excuse not to relax in Roswell. Take care!

THE RED DIVA REVIEW

Downsizing is out. Upsizing is in. BY MICHELLE KING SLATER

COVID-19 is motivating many people to move. With everyone at home, families

$504K

are bursting at the seams, and because schools are virtual, buyers and sellers

151

can continue to move well into the fall and winter without a disruption in their children’s schooling.

The HOT summer market will STAY HOT into the fall and winter.

$470K

I speak from personal experience. I recently listed my own home and purchased

145

another home because of COVID-19. My family has needed/wanted to move into a larger home for years. The recent state of “stay at home” kids and careers had pushed our family of five to the max in our 2,200 square foot home. How many of you can relate? Since March, I’ve been running my business out of our spare bedroom while three kids, just feet away, make a lot of noise in virtual school. Meanwhile, my husband

36

has been holed up in the dining room for his day of Zoom calls for work. We found the home of our dreams in Horseshoe Bend. We sold our current home after ONE DAY on the market! AND we locked in a mortgage rate of just 2.9%. The sellers were moving as a result of COVID-19 as well. Because they each have

$464K

busy careers, they decided to move closer to their parents who offered to help facilitate virtual school for their three little ones. How can I help you upsize? Give me a call at 770-866-0041 and let's set up a

The Deep Roots Patio has become a Roswell local favorite on most afternoons and evenings. The shop has created a comfortable gathering spot where friends and family can toast a special occasion, relax after a long week, or just run in to quickly grab a bottle of wine for dinner. Deep Roots is also the perfect unique location for your next event! Host a bridal shower, birthday party, corporate event, fundraiser, or just a fun friends night out! You may be wondering how this trendy wine bar came about. Owner Dana Gurela developed a passion for wine after her first visit to Napa in 2009. When Dana and husband Todd moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012, she turned that passion into an obsession. Gurela enrolled in wine school and began working in wineries. She became a certified California Wine Appellation Specialist via the San Francisco Wine School and has obtained Wine and Spirits Education Trust Level 2 certification from the Napa Valley Wine Academy. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area for five years, Gurela knew it was time to return home to her family in Georgia, but not without bringing a little piece of wine country with her. The name Deep Roots recognizes the vines' struggle to survive in the vineyard and the connection to family here in Georgia. There are so many amazing new wines to discover! What are you waiting for?

n the past few months we have been working diligently adapting our projects, expanding our collaborations, and keeping the community connected and engaged. In addition to digitizing many of our programs, we created new opportunities to bring joy and creativity to Roswell. • We continued to install and commission public art (click HERE for AAR virtual ribbon cutting), keeping the artists that rely on us supported. Listen to Mike> • We documented Roswell's collective response to the COVID19 crisis and created a digital repository of photographs. • The photos submitted by locals showcases the resilience and resourcefulness of our people and our local businesses.

• We collected creative resources for both the community and for local artists in need of relief. • We reimagined our pop-up performance series, first migrating it to a digital platform, and now launching a drive-in, distant but still social way to enjoy music together. • We are creating a new series of "pop-in" performances which involve transporting a stage on wheels for parking lot shows to be enjoyed from windows and balconies! • We will facilitate bringing artists to senior living centers and to higher risk groups of individuals. We really need help spreading the word and getting support, so we can continue to work to bring public art to Roswell!

NEW KID IN TOWN: CBD STORE & MORE

26 - myroswellmagazine.com

Is relief in sight for your

‘pandemic anxiety’?

CBD Store & More opened in historic Roswell in April, despite the COVID19 pandemic because they knew their products would be needed now more than ever. BY REGINA BARKLEY

W

hen I first met Kevin Quirk in early January at a Roswell Next event held at Rock ‘N’ Taco, I told him I was curious about hemp-derived cannabidiol (or “CBD” as it is most commonly known) and its uses; however, not curious enough to go out of my way to seek more information. This changed when I started a conversation with Kevin, the new proprietor of CBD Store and More on Canton Street, a hometown provider of high-quality CBD products. Naturally, I took the opportunity to ask my questions from someone who’s an expert on the subject. What exactly is CBD? What are the side effects? How long does it take to work? How will I know it’s working? How do I determine my dosage? He thoroughly – and patiently – explained the latest research and benefits associated with CBD before summarizing, “It affects each in-

dividual differently.” CBD may help one person by alleviating anxiety, another by diminishing symptoms of PTSD, or another by aiding in a better night’s sleep. A friend of mine told me that his joint and arthritis pain has completely disappeared since he began taking CBD; and another good friend with MS (multiple sclerosis) said CBD has calmed her tremors. It’s the same thing medical doctors say when prescribing medicine, “It affects each individual differently.” That’s the only answer that makes any sense to me anyway. I took that as a challenge, a great mystery that needed to be solved to find out ‘if ’ and/or ‘how’ it might help me. I purchased my first product – a CBD-infused [salve/lotion] – and rubbed it into the muscles in my shoulders and neck for some relief. I don’t know why I was surprised when it worked

Why Roswell? Kevin Quirk explained to us why they chose Roswell as home to their flagship CBD and More store. It’s the same sentiments we hear from most new businesses that settle in on Canton Street: Kevin says of all the places in Georgia they considered, Roswell remained at the top of their list primarily because of its collaborative community vibe, fabulous community-wide events like Roswell

FREQUENTLY ASKED

questions

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. It’s a naturally occurring substance that’s used in a variety of products. Unlike its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it’s does not give you the “high” that has been traditionally associated with cannabis. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD & THC?

The plant Cannabis sativa has two primary species, hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but there’s a much higher percentage in hemp, which also has very low (less than 0.3%) levels of THC compared to marijuana.

Broad spectrum CBD is a mix between Full Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate. Like Full Spectrum CBD, the other compounds found within the plant are preserved in the extract; however, like CBD Isolate, THC is completely removed. Because Broad Spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabinoids, it can deliver the enhanced benefits of the “entourage effect,” without the risk of psychoactive effects of THC.

WHAT ARE THE VARIANTS OF CBD?

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, which is produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant including terpenes, flavonoids, plant parts, and other cannabinoids. CBD Isolate is typically extracted from Hemp, due to its low to non-existent THC-content.

There are three different types of CBD: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum and Isolate.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CBD?

Full spectrum CBD is an extract that contains all compounds found naturally occurring in the cannabis plant including cannabinoids, terpenes, and essential oils which work together to magnify the therapeutic benefits of each individual cannabinoid. This is commonly referred to as the “entourage effect“.

Research is ongoing into the various applications of CBD and hemp products. We encourage our customers to research the potential benefits of CBD for themselves as well as visit our store to experience products which might be right for their lifestyle.

FREQUENTLY UN-ASKED

questions

WILL IT GET ME ‘HIGH’?

No. CBD will not get you high nor distort your mind because there is no THC in CBD. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the element in the cannabis that’s psychoactive. CBD is a different, naturally occurring compound that is completely nonpsychoactive, according to CBD Origin. Instead, it delivers healing properties of the plant without the negative effects of getting you high. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Even among people who used high doses of CBD, many smallscale studies have shown that adults tolerate a wide range of doses well. However, the most common side effect, according to Medical News Today, is tiredness, as well as some reports of diarrhea and changes in appetite or weight. It can take

anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours before the effects of CBD can be felt. DO I HAVE TO BE 18 TO PURCHASE CBD?

As mentioned above, without THC, CBD is available at countless places in person and online. A person who has access is allowed to purchase. However, Green Entrepreneurs listed a couple of best practices suggested by industry experts when doing so: Purchase from providers that have independent, third-party testing. ALSO, inquire about whether the CBD is made full-spectrum or isolate. Full-spectrum contains more compounds and nutrients.

It’s

healthy for your body to have some body fat. After all, fat can provide fuel for the muscles and brain, but all fat is not created equal. The fat you want to watch out for is visceral fat. This is the fat that is located in the abdominal cavity near vital organs such as the liver, stomach, and intestines. Having too much visceral fat can increase the chances of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

In order to combat the amount of excessive fat on the body there needs to be a balance with exercise and nutrition. Combine aerobic and strength training exercises to get the most out of your weight loss. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a great example of aerobic and anaerobic systems being combined to blast body fat away. Working hard for a short amount of time and keeping your rest to a minimum will turn your body into a caloric burner. You can keep it simple with body weight exercises

or throw in some free weights. For instance performing body weight squats for 30 seconds and resting for 15s. Want to take it up a notch throw in a kettlebell with the squat and really get your sweat on! Losing fat doesn’t have to be boring and it can seem hard but if you exercise at least 5 hours a week (one NETFLIX series show a day). Eat clean whole foods (less ingredients the better) and don’t go overboard with diets, and stay consistent you will see that fat decrease. @roswellmagazine

Adapting to the new normal. Senior living communities around Roswell are adjusting well!

S

By Sally Ellison

enior living activities programs ground to a halt when Covid-19 forced residents to self-isolate in their rooms starting in March. But in the time since, staff at retirement communities around Roswell have come up with a range of ways to keep residents entertained and engaged — an effort that becomes increasingly important as the pandemic drags on. Prior to the pandemic, senior living providers were focused on upgrading the resident experience to appeal to the next generation. Though most senior living providers are months into their Covid-19 measures, the disease’s unique pressures and uncertain duration affects the face of resident activities indefinitely. Local news has covered providers’ creativity, including meals to go and delivered, serving drinks and bowls of ice cream from a mobile cart, arranging hallway parties, and holding events outdoors. What used to be one activity director gathering everyone is now the chef handling the happy hours or the marketing

director joining in on the exercise. The CDC has recommended avoidance of group transportation, limited interaction and room entrance (virtual communications and check-ins are encouraged); residents are paired with a “buddy” in the facility who will check on them, ensuring that they are getting their needs met. This has led providers to tech-forward solutions, like St. George Village in Roswell’s new Youtube channel. An in-house production team delivers programming directly to residents’ mobile devices as a supplement to the provider’s Covid-19 activities schedule. Many senior living providers are budgeting extra time and money to build these forward-thinking programs, reinventing normal routines at a moment’s notice. Doing so is crucial to help residents — and staff — avoid the emotional toll of long-term social isolation. There is a human contact threshold, whether you’re serving a resident, or you’re a resident yourself. When Addington Place at The Mills enacted its Covid-19 infec@roswellmagazine

tion control measures earlier this year, fresh programming was needed to provide residents with a variety of activities to engage in each day. They began holding hallway entertainment sessions for residents to socialize and take part in music, games and other activities from their doorways. Addington also started delivering art supplies to stimulate creativity. While custom-made shows like “Music Mondays” (to showcase talent) are in place, residents can still participate in socially-distanced, one-on-one activities such as manicures, games, pet visits, crafts, exercise, video-chats and hair-pampering. St. George Village’s Facebook page states, “In [their] reopening phase, [they] are now working with clients to choose their floor plan and design and finish options,” as well as “allowing outside visitors (two immediate family members at a time) within apartments or outdoors, dining by reservation in the Lakeside Grille and resumption of some activities and wellness classes.” Addington has also taken festivities outside, where one-on-one visitations are set up with tables, chairs, and umbrellas, fit with

an outdoor rug! Addington hosts “Friday Afternoon Delight” and courtyard concerts and has moved their food drive to the main entrance. We’ve got incredible people pulling out all the stops to keep our seniors safe, connected and happy. LOCAL LOVING RETIREMENT LIVING

Sterling Estates Senior Living Community Winner: Best of Cobb "Assisted Living Community" 2019 & 2020

Sterling Estates of East Cobb is, quite literally, a living community – where seniors are empowered and enabled to maintain a healthy, holistic lifestyle and a desired level of independence. No stone was left unturned by the local owners/operators who designed a 10-acre campus worthy of their own loved ones. Designed with intention, this beautiful independent and assisted living neighborhood community with both cottages and apartments blends seamlessly with local landscape and architecture, resulting in a “look” that feels like home. “We wanted this to be a neighborhood first, that happened to have senior services,” says Partner Mike Brown. “In order to do that, you must have large acreage, you had to have expansive porches, patios, courtyards and sidewalks throughout. You must have different common places for people to go and to socialize. And now with the Covid-19 pandemic these amenities have become even more important to have for our residents and their families. We’re glad we built the community with all these features in place.”

At Sterling Estates, we can practice “social distancing” and not be socially isolated from each other. Residents are encouraged to be active and engaged, albeit six feet apart and with masks when inside the community’s common spaces, during this pandemic time. The staff uses the appropriate PPE at all times in their interactions with residents. Every precaution is being taken, but with such ample room, there remains a wealth of opportunities for enrichment and interaction with fellow residents at a responsible distance. These include; outside in the courtyard, on the porches and patios, or in the oversized, fine-dining room, where tables have been spread out and all can be served comfortably apart, or in the spacious activity room. While the pandemic persists, family visits continue and are currently taking place outside on the porches, patios and courtyards.

High-risk activities such as grocery or supplies shopping are delegated to staff members who help in the delivery by carefully disinfecting items to reduce unnecessary exposure, and then dropping the groceries off at residents’ cottage or apartment. These circumstances only highlight “the care and affection our staff has for the people who live here, and the care and affection that the residents have for the staff,” according to Brown. “The appreciation that the families have, the level of confidence that they express to us knowing their parents are safe, means the world to us.” At Sterling Estates of East Cobb, life is celebrated; relationships with family, friends and neighbors are valued; and residents are staying socially engaged and Sterling Strong.

With older adults being disproportionately at risk for COVID-19, Sterling has bolstered a transparent line of communication to keep residents and their families comforted and informed of every change. Fitness classes were transitioned outdoors, limited to a smaller number of residents in each class, and properly spaced to ensure the safety of all participants. A number of these classes are recorded on video and shared, giving people the option to participate in the comfort of their own living rooms. The indoor heated swimming pool continues to be used regularly by residents but with safe limits on number of residents in the pool at one time.

Today, Ernie owns three dog-friendly restaurants, and says, “When the pandemic hit, we were very thankful and fortunate to have just renovated; and now own Roswell’s largest outside artificial turf venue, furnished with picnic tables, a live stage, and swings along with our 4 season doghouse.” This has been an unusual year for all of Roswell’s restaurants. Managing Partner Ted Lescher held the 10-year anniversary party on the weekend of August 28-29, 2020 as a companion to their annual ‘End of Summer Bash.’ The festivities kicked off on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and Roswell Rotary, followed by a performance by East & Ward on Lucky’s LIVE! Take a day this week to block negative people, turn off 24/7 news and discover what really matters to you while exploring Roswell’s numerous creeks and trails. @roswellmagazine

Historic District Master Plan

C

ity of Roswell is working with a consulting team (TSW Design) to create a Historic District Master Plan. This plan is preservation focused with specific emphasis on four target areas within the City’s existing Historic District. The goal of this Roswell Historic District Master Plan is to establish a vision and a well-developed and feasible implementation plan to create a sustain-

able and thriving historic downtown environment, for the targeted areas, that protects the historic character and resources and also reflect the common goals and objectives of community stakeholders. The Historic District Master Plan Advisory Committee will assist in collecting and discussing public input and help formulate the master plan. www. roswellgov.com/HDMP

AmeriCorps, STAR House

T

hrough grants awarded by AmeriCorps to the City of Roswell, the City and its nonprofit partner STAR House Foundation are providing enhanced after school programming at select Roswell elementary schools. In 2017 and 2018, the City received two, initial grants to plan and begin implementation of a project to provide additional academic support to students, enlisting the help of AmeriCorps members in national service. With renewed funding in 2019, the City welcomed its first five AmeriCorps members, serving as tutors in community after school programs.

And, in 2020, the City and STAR House will resume the effort with a grant award up to $77,099 and a continued focus on early literacy proficiency for participating students, as well as homework support, assistance with STEM activities, and health and wellness programming. The City contributes additional funds annually to help facilitate the community-based project, with this year’s commitment up to $43,282. A core program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps is a network of local, state and national service programs that connects more than 75,000 Americans to meet community needs in areas such as education, the environment, public safety and health. AmeriCorps works with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and its Commission for Service and Volunteerism to afford service opportunities statewide. The City of Roswell was the first organization to receive AmeriCorps State funding in the North Fulton area in 2017, supporting national service at the local level.

Roswell in Print Exhibit

R

oswell Arts Fund, in partnership with the City of Roswell, Getty Images, and the Hagan Family Foundation is seeking entries from artists and photographers for a new, exciting outdoor photography exhibition. The Roswell in Print photography exhibit is designed to highlight the diverse characteristics of the City of Roswell, using visual storytellers to capture it through beautiful, compelling imagery and displayed in a non-traditional space. Roswell in Print Objectives include: • Share photography and art in non-traditional spaces. • Promote the collection and sale of new photography works. • Raise the artistic merit of the public art of Roswell. Give artists new and exciting ways to share their work with new audiences. • Encourage the participation from artists of color and represent the diversity of the City of Roswell and potential through the eyes of an artist Capturing Roswell’s Character: Set in a series of three-month periods, work will be displayed alongside curated photographs from Getty Images. These exhibit periods are October through December, February through April, and June through August. Each exhibit will explore a theme chosen

from one of the concepts identified as a part of Roswell’s “community character framework” in Roswell’s Public Art Master Plan, using each of the subthemes as inspiration. Themes • The River – warm, reflective, life giving, bubbling, vigorous, meandering • Colors – blossoming, vibrant, scenic, Roswell clay, consequential, sustainable • Forward-thinking, intentional, inclusive, blended, charming, verdant, illustrious All images selected for exhibition will be available for print sales with 70 percent of the sale going to the artist. Works will be displayed with consideration for safe, socially distanced experience. This call is open to all artists, designers, and teams. Roswell Arts Fund strives for inclusivity and diversity representative of the Roswell community and the metro Atlanta area in all initiatives. • Artists may submit up to 5 images for consideration. All images must have title, description, and price (if applicable). • If selected, artists must supply Roswell Arts Fund with High-Resolution digital images. @roswellmagazine
