GUY FAWKES DAY
Image of Guy Fawkes being celebrated Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration taking place on 5th November, primarily in the United Kingdom. Its origin begins with the events of 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives. The Gunpowder Plot occured when there was an attempted assassination of King James the First. Celebrating the fact that King James the First had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; months later, the introduction of Guy Fawkes Day on 5th November enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH!!
Diabetes awareness is important because it affects 425 million people across the world. At 71st in the world, Barbados had 35,600 cases of diabetes in 2017. Diabetes affects insulin production, resulting in the impaired ability to metabolise carbohydrates and ultimately elevated levels of blood sugar. You can be born with it or due to lifestyle choices may develop diabetes. Here are some tips to lessen the possibility of developing: Lose excess body fat through frequent exercise Include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet Drink an adequate amount of water daily Stress less - if you can’t change it don’t worry about it Get adequate sleep Schedule and keep medical appointments

SCIENCE FACT
We find it hard to believe but little over 218 years ago there was no electricity. This was the age when the use of candles was the norm. If you were to tell people in 1750 that in the future there would be little to no use for candles they would have found it hard to believe and call you crazy. Science’s breakthroughs have helped the world to develop in a way which is efficient for us. For anyone who has had a dream of inventing something crazy, the name Nikola Tesla comes to mind. Better known for creating the alternating current electrical system, Tesla also developed the three-phase system of electric power transmission. While training for an engineering career, he attended the technical school in Graz, Austria, and the University of Prague. At Graz he first saw the Gramme dynamo, which operated as a generator and, when reversed, became an electric motor, and he conceived a way to use alternating current to advantage. Later, at Budapest Telephone Exchange, he visualized the principle of the rotating magnetic field and developed plans for an induction motor that would become his first step toward the successful utilization of alternating current. Tesla sailed for America in 1884, arriving in New York with four cents in his pocket, a few of his own poems, and calculations for a flying machine. He first found employment with Thomas Edison (the man who created Direct current) , however the two inventors were far apart in background and methods, which eventually lead to a dispute between them. In 1891 Tesla invented the 'Tesla coil’ which is used in radio and television sets and other electronic equipment.
Years later, Tesla would go on to have been the inspiration which captured Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, Tesla motors and The Boring Company just to name a few.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Remembrance day falls on 11th November, a day of sorrow and one to set aside for remembering all soldiers who lost their lives while serving for their countries. Wearing poppies on one’s chest as a physical reminder leading up to the 11th. Why November 11? Because it is commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War, in 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This is why it was originally called Armistice day.

INDEPENDENCE DAY As we approach our 52nd year of Independence, we should all take a moment to reflect on our history. After the first English settlement at Holetown in 1627, Barbados remained a British colony until achieving independence from Britain on 30th November 1966. That first independence ceremony was accompanied by the raising of the Barbados national flag, and playing of the National Anthem for the first time. Independence Day is celebrated with a grand military parade, at the Garrison Savannah, site of the original Independence ceremony in 1966.
