WHY Lockerbie Learning? An Interview with Julia Hanschell January 2021

Why did you start the school in 2005?

“Because no school existed in Barbados that taught in the way my children, or my extra-lesson students, needed to learn.”

Why does Lockerbie have learning ‘pathways’?

“Every student has different proficiencies and potential and each student needs individualised teaching that embraces these.”

Why will classes always be small at Lockerbie? “I vowed never to have a class bigger than the number of students whose needs could be individually met.”

Why are the Sciences & STEM so important at Lockerbie? “Our students live in a time when the question is not what they want to become but what problem they want to solve in their world.”

Why is student progress assessed every 6 weeks? “If we have not impacted progress in 6 weeks, we need to change lanes quickly and alter the student’s learning experience.”

Why was your focus on student discovery? “We must help students discover how to conquer the world of their future with confidence and creativity.”

Why are Lockerbie Teachers special?

“We always check how creative and effective our teachers were with their past students and we continue to train them to become even better.”

Why does Lockerbie go above and beyond?

“Because your child is our child. Alternative experiences provide inspirational learning opportunities.”

Why does Lockerbie make learning fun? “Because children learn through play, collaboration, risk-taking and problem-solving. If they do not enjoy learning, then what is the point?”

Why does Lockerbie believe in adventure?

“Adventure is the best part of life. The world is our classroom.”

Why does Lockerbie teach beyond Curriculum?

“Curriculum focuses on knowledge; global exposure is unimaginably important.”

Why is Lockerbie so resource heavy and technology rich? “New resources and technologies are the foundation tools of effective, interactive teaching and motivated learning.”

Why does Lockerbie integrate Study Skills?

“We know that how students learn is constantly evolving and they need to leave school with a broad, relevant and adaptable skill set.”

Why does Lockerbie individualise learning?

“No two students learn in the same way, have the same needs or like the same things. So, learning journeys must be carefully and deliberately designed.”

Why are Art, Music, Coding & Sport essential?

“The well-rounded student has a distinct life advantage in almost every way. Involvement in these areas beyond the classroom often bring out hidden strengths.”

Why does Lockerbie have a Personal Student Advocate (PSA) system? “Every child at Lockerbie has a personal mentor who provides social, emotional and behavioural support beyond academics.”

Why does Lockerbie have an Educational Psychologist employed on Staff? “This Professional has extensive training in child development and constantly assesses that our classroom environments are positive and conducive to learning.”

Why does Lockerbie expect continued Professional Development of its staff? “The world is rapidly changing and teachers must constantly adapt through investing in their personal learning. We recognise that the only constant is change.”

Why is parent-school teamwork essential? “A parent is a child’s best resource. Always. If we are going to be effective teachers, we need to know each student as well as his or her parents do. That means we have to constantly work as a team.”

Why is Lockerbie relationship-focused?

“Relationships between teachers, students and parents are everything - they impact learning and success on every level.”

Why is Lockerbie a Cambridge International School? “Excellence is non-negotiable. Cambridge realised we embody their ethos.”

Why Lockerbie?

“Students today need to prepare for a very different future, inspired by individual interests; we encourage big dreams while building competent skill sets, creating inquisitive global thinkers.”

Why do our students keep returning to tell us of their success? “Because “It takes a village to raise a child” and we are family forever!”
