MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
RECRUITMENT CONFERENCE - LONDON The recruitment industry is all about people. Recruiters hear stories every day about how they’ve changed someone’s life. There’s no question that the staffing industry serves an important and powerful cause. Technology is having a big impact on the way the industry functions and changing the way we work. Repetitive tasks are automated with information management systems which is remotely accessible 24/7 in the cloud anywhere you have internet connectivity.
With my previous background in online business and putting more than 500 businesses online, I’ve been exploring how to transform our industry, businesses, and people’s lives through the power of people and technology and therefor attended the Bullhorn Engage London recruitment conference in September this year. Bullhorn CEO and founder Art Papas asked the staffing professionals gathered in London, “What do you do for a living?” Here’s what some attendees said: “I curate careers. I’m in the people business. I’m a dream matcher. I feed families. I help great companies find great people. I change people’s lives.” But Papas said these five words bubbled up to the top: Workforce. Staffing. People. Recruiting. Talent. “The word ‘work’ resonates with talent and employers,” Papas said. The top supporting word was “solutions.” Will everyone who attended Engage change the way they introduce themselves? Probably not, but the goal was to start the conversation. Words matter, and the way we describe our work matters. It’s up to all of us to take it from here. TEMPORARY STAFFING Temporary staffing is an essential element in the recruitment industry in South Africa. These temporary positions have become an important contribution to lowering unemployment figures by allowing candidates to add further experience to their CV’s, often leading to full time employment. For unemployed job seekers, and those who are in need of on-the-job experience, ‘temping’ is a perfect solution to gaining further skills and experience, essential to the competitive employment arena.

Andro Engelbrecht
The recruitment industry in South Africa keeps both the client and potential employee connected in the most time and cost efficient way possible to meet the demands of a highly competitive job market. THE RECRUITMENT INDUSTRY’S ROLE IN BBBEE One of the legacies of Apartheid in South Africa is the unequal distribution of wealth between its white and black populations. Connected to this is gender and racial disparities in education and skills levels. On 5 May 2015, the Department of Trade and Industry (“DTI”) released Notice 396 of 2015 (“Clarification Notice”) to clarify the position of the DTI with respect to the recent amendments to the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act being in effect from 1 May 2015. Through temporary and contract employment BBBEE candidates gain much needed experience in order to enter the permanent market. KC Makhubele, Vice President of the Federation of African Professional Staffing Organisations (APSO) commented: “Planning for BBBEE should never be underestimated and should be seen as a tool that can increase employment opportunities and boost business growth.” Businesses who share their staffing strategy and overall business objectives with their staffing agency / staffing partner will also ensure that these targets are prioritised, and met. For this reason, Makhubele stresses that staffing and recruitment companies should be seen as a strategic partner. Get to know your recruitment suppliers and ensure they know you, your corporate culture, your vision and values. For this reason, Makhubele stressed that staffing and recruitment companies should be seen as a strategic partner. In ending my festive season message I would like to quote Oren Arnold: “Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect”

LEADERSHIP: SOME INSIGHTS THAT WILL PROVOKE THOUGHT.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP L - Lead E - Example A - Accept D - Discipline E - Excellence R - Resolve LEAD YOURSELF To lead is to know where you are going. The beginning of leadership is knowing where you are going. The preparation of and adherence to a clear decisive plan or MAP is essential. When the captain of a ship knows what harbour he is headed for, every wind is the right wind. He will simply adjust the sails and the rudder to maintain the course. To hit the bulls-eye, you need to know where the target is. To find the right person to marry, you need to define what you are looking for. It is that straightforward. This very tool equips you for leadership. It sets you apart. It ensures that you have direction in a world where so many are directionless. Using it daily will enable you to take small purposeful steps, each taking you one step closer to your destination. In addition, it makes
18

provision for you to create new and exciting habits that will ultimately prepare you for the destination you dream about. Have you fully and completely prepared your blueprint? What have you learnt? BE AN EXAMPLE Nothing influences people more than the power of a good example. You can learn an enormous amount about a parent if you simply observe the actions of their children. After almost nineteen years of being a parent, I am beginning to see the truth in this statement. Although each of my children are unique and special, each has been exposed to and been influenced by my example. I have begun to see both the good and bad of my character reflected in theirs. All the years of telling them what is right has somehow faded into insignificance. While I was teaching by telling, they were learning by watching. Now I understand that what I do speaks more loudly than what I say. For them to change I have to change. This is as applicable in the work environment as it is in the family domain. The way you do things, and not the way you say things, is the real teacher. Begin

to pay more attention to the way you do things. Fix yourself and you will fix others. How is your example reflected in those watching you? ACCEPT YOURSELF People who do not accept themselves will do anything to prove their worthiness in an attempt to gain the acceptance of others. I used to say two words described the goals set by first time MAP users; Financial Freedom. Every goal appeared to be dependent on finance and the desire to do what they wanted, when they wanted. Thinking more carefully about my assessment, I realize that there is a far greater driver motivating people to have the so called dream car, house, education, job holiday, etc. It is a desperate desire for acceptance, primarily self-acceptance. The unprecedented success of social network could be that it appears to meet this need. Being someone’s friend or being liked by someone seems to create a state of wellbeing. The need to be accepted by others will push us to seek their approval in all the decisions we make and things we do. Before we make choices, we first think aboutwhat others might expect us to do, then we make our decisions to live up to that assumed expectation. Whose
expectations are you trying to live up to? IGNITE DISCIPLINE The absence of discipline highlights a lack of vision. A leader requires consistent discipline, not the intermittent type most people demonstrate. Everyone has experienced moments of impressive discipline in his or her life. On closer analysis of these moments it becomes clear that times of great discipline coincide with a vision that inspired and motivated. Amazingly, people who lack the discipline to plan become exceptional planners when it comes to their wedding day or an international holiday. To retain a high level of discipline, it is necessary to remain focused on a vision that you are passionate about. The moment you take your eye off your vision, laziness and procrastination creep in, like a cancer, seeking to devour every good intention you may have. Vision is the one thing a leader must possess. Without a vision, people perish. Keep your vision board where you can see and reflect on it daily, it is a must do. How can you make your vision board more visible? is doing the right job properly. Excellence is not perfection. Excellence is about constant and never ending improvement. Recently I heard a statement that a painting is never finished, only abandoned. As a perfectionist, I can understand why this is said. The secret is knowing when to stop and accepting that there will always be something that can be done to improve. I will never forget the sinking feeling I had when I spotted the spelling errors in my first book, even after paying an editor a large some of money to edit my work. Today, I am more relaxed about it and do my best to deliver my best within an acceptable time frame. It is comforting to know that people the world over spend enormous amounts of money buying paintings that are incomplete yet extremely valuable. Is perfectionism keeping you from releasing your inner-potential? HAVE RESOLVE Resolve breaks through impenetrable walls, builds bridges over impassable streams and claims impossible is nothing. Anyone can be a good starter; it takes a leader with determined resolve to finish well. Resolve is the ability to follow through on the decisions you make, especially when the mood in which you made them has left you. Failure, in my opinion, is just the result of throwing in the towel, of giving up,

of quitting. People who fail to finish are simply habitual quitters. The habit of quitting has no place in leadership. Leaders finish what they start. They bloom in adversity. They are the tough that get going when the going gets tough. Adversity is the resistance that strengthens their resolve; not the excuse for giving up. They use obstacles as stepping-stones and not stumbling blocks. They meet immovable objects with unstoppable force. When everyone else says it can’t be done, they take action to show them it can. Nay sayers and pessimists cannot be found close to leaders. Who or what is weakening your resolve? Glen A. ULUSABA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
U
lusaba means ‘place of little fear’. The local Shangaan tribe (from whose language the name comes) that occupied the area long ago used the hills as an outpost for the tribal chief and senior warriors. The elevation gave them a tremendous advantage during battle and meant their enemies were unlikely to win, as surprise attacks were virtually impossible. The tribal members could therefore live in safety – hence, the place of little fear. The first incarnation of Rock Lodge was completed in 1983, with an access road having

been built in the same year. In 1994 Ulusaba was purchased by Sir Richard Branson. Both Rock and Safari Lodges were entirely rebuilt and have been transformed into world-class lodges. In 2008 the Treehouse Suite was built at Safari Lodge, giving guests the opportunity to get even closer to the Xikwenga Dam and watering hole, and in 2009 the Cliff Lodge Suites were completed at Rock Lodge. Ulusaba is Sir Richard Branson’s private game reserve in South Africa. Ulusaba has 21 rooms and suites spread over two lodges: Rock Lodge,
including the beautiful Cliff Lodge, and Safari Lodge. Ulusaba sits entirely within the Sabi Sand Reserve near Kruger National Park, surrounded by 13,500 hectares (about 33,000 acres) of open bush. The hills of Ulusaba are spectacular as they rise above the surrounding terrain, offering a view unsurpassed anywhere else in the reserve. People visit the area for the abundant game and the variety of sightings possible – believe us, once you’ve experienced it you’ll be hooked.
Ulusaba is a family-friendly safari destination and most of our staff are Shangaan and hail from the communities that border the game reserve. Shangaans are celebrated for their dancing and singing and a rich musical heritage. Enjoying the success of wine farming in the Cape, holidays were spent in the Bushveld during the winter months. My Grandmother Ingrid, fondly remembers those days and has kindly supplied photographs representing those early pioneering days. Also well known for her philanthropy, she established the Head Quarters for the Guide Dog Association in Cape Town. She married the son of Justice H de Villiers and together shared many memories vacationing here in the Bushveld. My father, Charles, has also continued the family

Today, a dry riverbed separates the Camp from a frequently used watering hole, which lies adjacent to the extensive entertainment area and commonly attracts jackals, hyenas, warthogs and elephants. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR BODY’S PH LEVEL
I
should know my body’s pH level? What is next? Yes sure, you might be thinking this but before you get ahead of yourself… you should know that your body’s pH level plays a key role in regulating your health and is said to prevent cancerous cells from growing and prevent heart disease.
HOW TO TEST YOUR PH LEVEL You will need to purchase a “pH test strip kit” from your local pharmacy and for a period of 30 days test and record your pH reading daily. First thing in the morning (before eating or drinking) test your urine or saliva. (Keep the colour blocks of the test strip, covered in the urine or saliva for at least 15 seconds.) Compare the colour blocks to the chart on the back of the pH strip packaging. On the 30th day add up all the readings together and then divide it by 30, this will then be the average pH reading of your body and indicates if you should make drastic lifestyle changes or not.
50
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
WHAT SHOULD MY PH LEVEL BE? A pH level of 7.4 carries optimum oxygen on a cellular level to maintain a healthy body and prevent the growth of cancerous cells. According to Professor Ying Xu from the University of Georgia, low oxygen levels in cells (instead of genetic mutations) may be a primary cause of uncontrollable tumour growth in some cancers. A pH level lower than 7.4 results in the haemoglobin not binding with oxygen, in other words the lower the pH, the more Hydrogen ions, the higher the carbon dioxide levels and the less affinity haemoglobin has for oxygen. For the sake of optimum oxygen levels on a cellular level it is good to maintain a body pH of at least 7.4, this is not always possible, but the following range will increase your health; 6.5 – 7.5 with urine testing or 7 – 7.5 with saliva testing, readings below will be classified as “acidic”. We live and die at the cellular level and the
billions of cells in our bodies must maintain alkalinity to function properly and to stay alive. Therefore, the first line of defence against disease is a proper pH balance. An acidic body increases the growth for harmful bacteria, yeast, fungus, mould, viruses, cancerous cells and unwanted organisms. The link between an acidic body and cancer has been proven repeatedly. In an acidic state, the body will try to protect itself from the damaging acid by storing the acid in fat cells in the attempt to try and prevent the acid from eating holes in tissues. So, besides the high risk of diseases an acidic body can also result in unwanted fat gain that seems impossible to shake off. When you adopt a more alkaline lifestyle with a healthy pH level, you may also lose unwanted fat. High acid levels deplete magnesium, calcium and potassium; increasing the risk of Osteoporosis and calcium deficiency. Other diseases caused by an acidic body includes: • Most digestive disorders including bloating, indigestion, nausea, gastric reflux • Circulatory system including heart disease, arteriosclerosis and inflammation • Immune system disorders and diseases • Respiratory system when acidity is high the waste in the form of mucus and infections and viruses build up in the lungs which lead to colds, bronchitis and asthma • Skeletal system such as arthritis (the word means inflammation of the joint) including Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis • Integumentary system (skin) inflammation of the skin, lesions or sores, pimples or rashes • Nervous system devitalizing or enervation of the nervous system that makes the physical, mental and emotional body weak • Excretory system (urinary system) kidney stones or kidney failure • Muscular system acidity increases in the muscle cells and disrupts the metabolism break down of glucose and oxygen to energy • Reproduction system infertility, decrease male & female arousal, decrease fertility and increases the risk to miscarriage • Depleted energy and heavy breathing ADOPT A LIFESTYLE THAT INCREASES ALKALINITY The words we are looking for are FRUIT & VEGETABLES. Most fruits and vegetables, including
citrus, make your body alkaline. Raw foods are the best of course or air fried (no baking or frying in or with oils as this turns food acidic). Eat at least 8 – 10 servings fresh organic fruit and vegetables per day. Cut out all alcohol, meats, dairy and grains. Adopt an 80/20 plan, this means eat 80% alkaline food daily and 20% neutral or mildly acidic. There are many alkaline food charts, and some are even contradicting. I have found that the best method is to follow the guidelines but test it for yourself, see what works best with your body, believe me, it will show in your pH test the next day. INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE 1. Drink an alkalizing powder daily (morning upon rising and evening before sleeping) 2. Detox daily upon waking up with the lemon drink below. It will keep your liver, gall bladder and colon intact and assist with increasing your pH level: • Wash and cut up a whole lemon (include the rind and pips • Add 1 cup cold water • Add 2 teaspoons raw virgin olive oil, 2 teaspoons avocado oil, 1 teaspoon hemp oil • Put it all into a food processor and blend until everything is a smooth yellow pulp • Drink it every morning at least 30 minutes before having your breakfast 3. Limit your coffee intake to 1/ day (no milk, cream or sugar) instead learn to drink more rooibos and green herbal teas, cucumber or ginger water 4. Drink “green food” powder daily in smoothies 5. Drink freshly squeezed carrot juice (OK supermarket sells a carrot juice with no additives or preservatives made from real carrots – no syrups) 6. Drink 2L of spring water, river water or tap water that you filter through carbon / charcoal (Clicks sells a SMARTlife green BPA free plastic bottle with a charcoal filter to ensure more alkaline drinking water) FOOD TO STOP EATING OR LIMIT TO ONLY ONCE A WEEK (pH level of 3-6) 1. Acidic foods with a reading of 3 • Carbonated water; carbonated drinks and sodas; energy drinks 2. Acidic foods with a reading of 4 • Popcorn; cream cheese; buttermilk; prunes; pastries; pasta; cheese; pork; beer; wine; pick-

les; black tea; chocolate; roasted nuts; vinegar; all sugars and sweeteners 3. Acidic foods with a reading of 5 • Most purified waters; distilled water; coffee; sweetened fruit juice; pistachios; beef; white bread; peanuts; nuts; wheat 4. Acidic foods with a reading of 6 •Fruit juices; most grains; eggs; fish; tea; cooked spinach; cooked beans; soya milk; coconut; lima beans; plums; brown & white rice; barley; cocoa; oats; liver; oyster; salmon; shrimp; chicken; lentils FOODS TO EAT 1. Alkaline foods with a pH level of 8 •Apples; almonds; tomatoes; grapefruit; corn; mushroom; turnip; olive; soybeans; peaches; bell pepper; radish; pineapple; cherries; wild rice; apricot; strawberries; bananas 2. Alkaline foods with a pH level of 9 • Avocados; green tea; celery; peas; sweet potatoes; aubergine; green beans; beets; blueberries; pears; grapes; kiwi; melons; tangerines; figs; dates; mangoes; papayas; hemp seeds; rhubarb; zucchini; radish; ginger; chives; basil 3. • Raw baby spinach; broccoli; artichokes; brussels sprouts; cabbage; cauliflower; carrots; cucumbers; lemons; limes; seaweed; asparagus; kale; radish; collard greens; onion; quinoa; Himalayan salt; garlic; parsley; sprouts; chia seeds; EMOTIONS CAN INCREASE ACIDITY Besides diet, emotions can also influence your pH level. Emotions such as anger, hate, sadness, despair and loneliness also change the body chemistry to acidic. Happy emotions such as love, result in a more alkaline body. It Is important to alleviate stress through exercise or meditation to maintain happy thoughts and a healthy body. A holistic approach to your health is always best to prevent disease, as the great scientist, Antoine Béchamp once said 'The germ is nothing, the terrain is everything.' THIS SUMMER IS FOR HIM
T
his year’s summer trends “for him” holds exciting new styles and fresh ideas, moving away from the old school preppy look with sleek hairstyles, pink shorts & pastel polos. This summer styles are exciting, combining edgy, athletic and rugged looks with bold colours to bring about a warm masculine feel. Combine this with your well-trained body and enjoy what will be “the best summer” of your life. Shorts: Chino’s with bold colours like black or navy; khaki is always a good neutral option as well. Add a pair of athletic shorts (mesh or sweat) for those casual days. Athleisure for men stays a bold fashion statement, dress it up with a sporty T-shirt and an open button collar shirt over the T-shirt and a pair of Vans or Converse. (don’t just wear your Athleisure with tank tops only) Make sure to also cut off a pair of wellfitting jeans to slightly touch at the knee caps for that casual look that can also be dressed up with a trendy shirt. Keep in mind that this year’s “cut off jean look” is fitted for highly casual events only, so no need to pull a “John Cena”. Dressing tip: With all shorts, avoid overly baggy and long choices – the best is to aim for “slightly above knee cap” length - and not too wide either, allow for a bit of space with no winging. Shirts: Hot summer temperatures can make a man look like a dripping rain forest and a shirt

made from light material is always a life saver when it comes to perspiration. The “Ed Hardy” look is out this year and so is the graphic T-shirts with awful jokes. So, what is in this year? Striped T-Shirts made from light material. Match a grey and white striped T-shirt with a well fitted pair of bold navy chino shorts to take the masculine expression up a notch this summer. If you need a classier look, dress your chino shorts up with a polo (neutral colours steer away from the pinks and pastels), or a long sleeve button up linen shirt (made from light material) with rolled up sleeves, if this look is not for you then stick to a short button up shirt in a neutral cream or white. Pattern shirts are also in fashion this year (no not Hawaiian or bowling shirts) so get creative in your style, this look is perfect for those “weekend dads” and floral options blend well over a neutral colour T-shirt. Dressing tip: Keep it light and breezy Long pants: If wearing jeans this summer, avoid plain blue jeans and anything acid wash, instead experience with bold creative options and if that is not your fancy then go with black, it always looks good. Chinos are great to wear; their light material are made for summer. Colours to have this year include olive, grey and blue (non-florescent) Dressing tip: Choose a slim or tight fit By Lemanja Mears
