CULTURAL

Cultural The United Nations has declared 2019 The Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019). Languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of people, not only as a tool for communication, education, social integration and development, but also as a repository for each person’s unique identity, cultural history, traditions and memory. Logan City Council Libraries will feature a number of presenters throughout 2019 who will explore the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Nyeumba-Meta Nyeumba-Meta is a space and collection at Logan Central Library that aims to foster respect for Australian Indigenous cultures. The space includes a yarning circle and artwork, and it has regular events throughout the year. Nyeumba-Meta was named to reflect the Yugambeh and Torres Strait Islander languages. Nyeumba in Yugambeh language means “teaching or learning” while Meta in Eastern Torres Strait Islander language means “house”. Want to know what is in the collection? Visit loglib.org/atsi to access the Nyeumba-Meta online catalogue.
