LONDON: CREATIVE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Steeped in history, stories and literary greatness, London is arguably the most culturally vibrant city in the world.

OUR PARTNERS

Certainly, few cities can lay claim to as many great writers. Home to Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, Charles Dickens’ Museum, and Sherlock Holmes’ Baker Street, London is an unparalleled draw for everyone interested in books, stories, culture and creativity. There are over 17,000 languages spoken in the city, more than any city in the world. It has 800 bookshops and over 380 public libraries, including the renowned British Library, which holds the Magna Carta. Countless film greats feature this glorious city, from A Clockwork Orange, and Harry Potter to Notting Hill. For all those coming to London for LBF, we advise building time to soak up the city’s unlimited diverse offerings. Literary Bloomsbury and the Old Museum Quarter, the London of Oscar Wilde and London’s Literary Golden Mile are just a few of the treats in store. Plus, of course, London Book & Screen Week offers untold events, all taking place in the cultural week that holds LBF at its core.

A WORLD EVENT IN A WORLD CITY WHO EXHIBITS? From very modest beginnings in the Berners Hotel near Oxford Street in 1971 as the Specialist Publishers’ Exhibition for Librarians, The London Book Fair – it took the name in 1977– has grown to be an essential part of the international book trade calendar. Today, the entire international publishing industry is represented, from the giant houses with which we are all familiar, to the smallest independent. There are the publishers of blockbuster novels and academic texts, and the producers of children’s books and graphic novels.

25,000

PUBLISHING PROFESSIONA LS FROM 124 COUNTRIES

A key part of the exhibition is the increasing number of tech players who explore the myriad of ways in which content can now be treated and delivered. So there are mobile companies, gaming start-ups and content-hungry tech companies. This is where you feel the zeitgeist.

WHO VISITS? Visitors include anyone who is involved with the creation, distribution, sale or treatment of content. Authors, talent scouts, editors, designers, digital gurus, all walk the floor, meeting, talking, observing, discovering. Typically, the Fair welcomes more than 25,000 professional visitors from more than 124 countries.

To walk its floors is to experience knowledge and story in all its forms. It is impossible not to be fascinated – and inspired. The international reach is breathtaking. More than 60 countries regularly exhibit, visitors come from over 124 countries and there are around 1,500 global companies.

While much solid business is begun or concluded at the Fair (often both), what is just as important are the discussions that take place, the exchanges of ideas. For a sense of where the industry is and where it is going, The London Book Fair is essential.

Technology continues to expand. Its many and varied incarnations now bracketed under Tech, where everyone from app developers to games designers and digital workflow solutions are found. Everything you need for your project’s content is located under one roof.

GENERAL PUBLISHING There are over 300 exhibitors in this category and the same major names return every year, testament to a formula and format that works. More than 30 major international pavilions are housed across the halls.

LBF has become an important destination for this sector that leads the way in many areas, not least technology. There is much their colleagues in consumer publishing can learn from them, and this is the best place to do it. 18

In 2015, the Research & Scholarly Forum was launched in collaboration with the Association for Learned & Professional Society Publishers and The Publishers Association. The forum was created to enable international publishers to learn from each other, improve business practice and develop new models and markets and will return in 2016. 19

CROSSMEDIA: KNOWLEDGE AND STORYTELLING FROM BOOK TO SCREEN AND BEYOND “This event kicked ass. I saw more people in one afternoon than I could have done in months of research, phone calls and emails. I came away with lots of things I want to do and people I want to follow up with. I’m already looking forward to the 2015 edition” Damian Horner, Brand Development Director, Hachette

THE FUTURE OF CONTENT AND THE CONTENT OF THE FUTURE There is no doubt about it – the advent of the digital age shook the world of analogue formats to the core. But with that shift came a world of possibility, and as new content-hungry audiences look to engage in more ways than ever before, we are only starting to scratch the surface. 24

Take the storyworld behemoth that is The Lord of the Rings. One Does Not Simply read Tolkein’s trilogy – for fans in their millions, the world of Middle Earth permeates everyday life with new ways to interact through film, games and a universe of licensed products. The concept of a storyworld is familiar territory for publishers: after all, a good book is greater than the sum of its parts, a natural candidate for adaptation in other formats. The question is, how?

In answer to that question, LBF brings together the cutting edge innovators from the worlds of gaming, apps, graphic novels, brand licensing, film and TV and provides a home for them within the world’s premier publishing event. Here we provide a forum to exchange ideas and establish new contacts, exploring all the ways IP can be exploited and enhanced.

25

CONTENT ACROSS ALL MEDIA Gaming The Gaming Zone at LBF was born out of publishing’s desire to understand and better connect with the video game industry. We hand-match games creators with like-minded publishers through a series of bespoke networking sessions and educational seminars, facilitating potential co-production and licensing partnerships in this exciting and lucrative space. Now in its third year, the Gaming Zone at LBF includes a large meeting space and seminar theatre, with an expanded content programme ideal for games veterans and newbies alike. www.londonbookfair.co.uk/gaming

MIP Junior Once again in 2016, LBF will offer the chance for a publisher delegation to attend MIP Junior (3-4 October) and MIPCOM (5 October), the premier rights and preview events for the TV & Film worlds, at a 75% discounted rate. The annual LBF delegation is an ideal trip for anyone dealing in Children’s content. Working alongside the UK Publishers Association, we curate a programme of networking and promotional opportunities for the publishers, on top of entry to both events. www.londonbookfair.co.uk/mip “I really enjoyed coming and I feel like it was very valuable. The organisation was good and I feel like I got a good sense of what MIPCOM And MIP Junior have to offer” Richard Haines, Acquisitions Manager, Penguin Children’s “This delegation was so positive and fruitful for all of us. There was a real sense of camaraderie (not easy at such a huge event) and I think we all felt supported and cared for” Laura Campbell, Editorial Director, Dog Ears

26

Children’s Media Conference Rights Exchange We are delighted to partner again with the Children’s Media Conference to offer an international market event for Children’s Publishers, Authors’ Agents, TV, Interactive, Film, Games and App Producers at The London Book Fair. The CMC Rights Exchange is a must for anyone looking to buy and sell children’s IP – especially if you’re looking to build partnerships to take content across platforms.

Insights Programme The massive Insights Programme at the Fair includes a dedicated Content across all media seminar stream that offers our clients the opportunity to get on the inside track of new media, with high profile industry experts offering gems of wisdom that are equally educational, practical and inspirational.

Watch this space. Content travels. 27

Booksellers at LBF One of the reasons booksellers, large and small, attend the Fair is to seek out new contacts, discuss the latest trends and innovations, discover new suppliers – to explore what is available and forge new business relationships. The Fair is the perfect place to facilitate that discovery and help set your store apart from the competition!

BOOKSELLING AND BEYOND… The London Book Fair celebrates and champions bookselling in all its guises, from high street browsing to online clicking.

Each year, LBF and the Booksellers Association (BA) run a hosted programme for up to 50 booksellers from around the UK and Ireland, allowing them to attend the Fair and take part in all the bookseller activities including a special party for booksellers and publishers. Additionally, the ‘Retail & Etail Insights’ seminar stream is programmed by the BA with a host of seminars on offer on the first two days of the Fair.

MARKET FOCUS SPOTLIGHT LBF is fabulously international, like a book version of the Olympics.

Nothing emphasises this more than the Market Focus programme which has run since 2004 and seeks to facilitate links and boost trade between UK publishers and their foreign counterparts. Imagine hands across the ocean, exchanging creative content – different people united by a common love of story and knowledge.

Market Focus partners::

The aim of Market Focus is to increase dialogue, to sell rights, to find authors that work in one territory who can then find a whole new audience in another. Its success over the years can be seen in the International Rights Centre which has a display of titles that have found success as a result of this initiative.

32

LONDON HOSTS THE INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONGRESS 2016 The IPA, the UK Publishers Association, (PA) and LBF are proud to host the 31st International Publishers Congress, 10 – 12 April 2016, where global publishing leaders will debate the challenges and opportunities. Copyright, literacy and reading, accessible publishing and digital will all feature on the programme, alongside a host of networking and social events. 33

THE INTERNATIONAL RIGHTS CENTRE

THE TRADING FLOOR FOR CONTENT 34

The International Rights Centre is where those titles, projects, films, ideas and characters we might later see in our bookshops or cinema screens, often begin their journey into the public realm. The maze of meeting tables has become easier – and more fun – to navigate, with the introduction of author zones: Lewis Carroll, Chaucer, Dickens, Shakespeare et al, marking out each cluster for navigational ease.

With over 600 Rights Table Holders and 400 companies from 30 countries, it is an impressive sight. But if you think it sounds like a giant, open plan office, how many offices have a pop-up version of London’s famous Ivy restaurant? The Club at The Ivy offers a champagne bar and seating area, waitress and concierge service, daily continental breakfast, tea and cocktail snacks and a private area for members to socialise, hold meetings and relax. The perfect place to celebrate that deal!

35

Many agents are among the audience here, looking for those self-published authors that they feel they can take to another level. The Author of the Day programme is an established, and constantlybuzzing feature of the Fair. Writers so honoured in the past include David Nicholls, Hilary Mantel, William Boyd, Julia Donaldson and Bi Feiyu. Author interviews in the PEN Literary Salon attract large crowds annually.

Authors feel at home at the Fair – and so they should. Author HQ comprises a theatre and networking area. It is one of the most popular features of the Fair, attracting a great deal of interest from the self-publishing community. Author HQ demonstrates LBF’s role in acknowledging the changes in the industry, by providing a forum for discussion of the ever-expanding number of approaches to publishing. 36

37

THE AUTHOR AND THE AUDIENCE The London Book Fair is about the book industry in its entirety – and that includes providing a platform for more difficult issues such as censorship to be discussed. PEN International is the body that campaigns for freedom of expression for writers everywhere. The English PEN Literary Salon hosts events, Author of the Day interviews and literary debate throughout the Fair.

ENGLISH PEN LITERARY SALON & FOYLES BOOKSHOP Heard the author? Now buy the book! We are proud to have Foyles as our official bookseller. If it isn’t the most famous bookselling name in the world, then it is certainly in the top three. Now in its 113th year, it brings its famous name to LBF once again where it stocks titles by the featured authors, as a well as a carefully curated selection of additional titles. A book fair where you could not buy books would be curious indeed. Who in the industry is not a bookbuyer? 38

MAKING WORDS TRAVEL LITERARY TRANSLATION CENTRE

In an increasingly global book trade the role of the translator has never been more important. If there is a barrier preventing the flow of titles from one territory to another, it is that English has become the lingua franca of the industry and only a tiny percentage of titles are ever translated into English.

11TE6N9 DEES AT TO THE LTC IN 2015!

But are translators fairly remunerated? Are they given due credit? The Literary Translation Centre (LTC) provides a forum to address these and other issues. In effect, the LTC is a mini-fair in its own right, with a curated seminar programme in its own theatre and the world’s leading translators all gathered in one spot. 39

INSIGHTS SEMINAR PROGRAMME While there is much to inform, provoke and excite on the show-floor and in its theatres, there is also an impressive programme of stimulating talks and seminars taking place off the show-floor. The range of topics covered in the Insights Programme is staggering. Copyright licensing in the digital age, the gamification of publishing, digital publishing in sub-Saharan Africa, the independent booksellers’ guide to multi-channel bookselling, how should mainstream publishers react to self-publishing, what sort of skills are publishers looking for…the list is rich and endless.
