Our ninth London Craft Week builds on the appetite for special live experiences, which drove our record visitor numbers at last year’s festival and is still so evident in the buzz and activity across the capital.

We’ve always wanted to spotlight unsung creative communities, those ecosystems of exceptional talent, working in our midst but often out of sight. Not just in London but from around the UK and the world. LCW 2023 doubles down on this, with new hubs, such as East London & Park Royal, as well as a focus on the specialisms of different parts of the city, such as savoir faire in Mayfair and bespoke interiors on Pimlico Road.

Reinforcing this is a glimpse behind the scenes of the Coronation – into the work of another fascinating community of artisans and crafts linked to the Monarchy.

More than ever this year, I hope we’re proof of London’s enduring global cultural pulling-power. Our significantly increased international content and roster of artists and galleries of the highest standards shows that human ingenuity still brings people together and acts as a wholly positive force, especially in moments of uncertainty and tension.

Serapian

In the world of leather goods, the name Serapian is synonymous with excellence in craftsmanship and elegant Milanese design. The Maison was founded in 1928 by Stefano Serapian and since then, Serapian’s creations for both men and women have attracted a loyal following of discerning connoisseurs. Entirely crafted in Italy from the most noble leathers and materials, Serapian stands out with its iconic Mosaico craft, refined tonal palette and soft geometric shapes. When Stefano Serapian brought Mosaico to life in 1947, he created a specialty so unique that it would become one of the Maison’s hallmarks. Delicate strips of lamb nappa are meticulously handwoven together by Serapian skilled artisans creating a geometric, hypnotic effect somewhere between Byzantine mosaics and Japanese origami. Each Mosaico creation is enriched with an inside leather tag signed with the name of the Artisan who crafted it. Balancing tradition and innovation, Serapian remains one of the few Maisons to offer a complete bespoke service. The Bespoke Atelier is housed inside Villa Mozart, a beautiful Art Deco landmark in the heart of Milan and the experience is guided by Giovanni Nodari Serapian, a third-generation family member. A fraternity of world-class craftspeople, artisans, curators and makers, the Pimlico Road Design District is a hub of inspiring design and best-in-class interiors. From sculptors to woodworkers, embroidery to antiques, textiles to crystals, it’s a melting pot and meeting place for creativity.

Located in Belgravia and a short walk from Chelsea, Victoria and Knightsbridge, Pimlico Road has long been an esoteric destination to discover brands who cater for the discerning designer and collector. The area is unique in that not only will you find the eponymous brands of world-renowned designers on the street, but also the designers themselves — resulting in a creative neighbourhood with a village feel, where every shop window tells a different story.

Since 2016, The Pimlico Road Series has hosted inspiring talks and panels, interactive workshops and fascinating demonstrations for London Craft Week. Meisterstrasse Handmade presents an exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of the Vienna World Exhibition 1873. As an Austrianfounded, international platform of excellence, representing heritage manufacturers alongside independent craftspeople, Meisterstrasse Handmade showcases producers from Austria, Japan and Thailand.

In addition to a selection of new pieces, a group of museum pieces that formed part of the original 1873 exhibition is also displayed. In this way, handcrafted products from traditional companies and young entrepreneurs as well as historical pieces build a bridge between history and contemporary crafts.

Emphasis is laid on manufacturers that were or are Purveyors to the Court, as well as innovative artisans showcasing of-the-moment objects. Additionally, tourism legends tell the story of Austria as a country of remarkable and authentic hospitality for the last 150 years.

The exhibition takes place at The Austrian Embassy in London at 18 Belgrave Square: a venue of great importance for Austria in the 19th century. As the former Imperial Embassy of the Habsburg Monarchy, the building remains true to its Victorian origins, creating the perfect ambiance for a journey of craftsmanship through time and everlasting design.

Her Majesty Queen Azizah of Malaysia returns to London Craft Week with ‘Abstract Nature’, an exhibition that showcases Malaysia’s rich cultural landscape through its extraordinary craft traditions.

Designed and curated by Judith Clark alongside architect Ryan Cook, the exhibition at the High Commission of Malaysia highlights craft skills that have their roots in the country’s indigenous communities. The installation is inspired by traditional Malaysian architectural proportions and features master craftspeople at work as well as interactive workshops for visitors.

‘Abstract Nature’ draws both its motifs and materials from the Malaysian landscape: decorative schemes of abstracted flora and fauna are embedded within intricate woodcarvings, basketry and plaiting, creating evocative narrative histories.

The craft on display belongs to the intimate decoration of domestic interiors and clothing — everyday and ceremonial. Explore the country’s multiple textile traditions, including handwoven brocades, warp-ikat fabrics, embroidery and intricate beadwork.

The exhibition itself, re-crafted from materials from Her Majesty Queen Azizah’s first display, reveals not only a commitment to sustainable design, but underlines the transformational power of craft.

The Soluna Art Group, a leading craft-focused gallery in Seoul, presents two exhibitions for London Craft Week, both of which shine a light on some of Korea’s most exciting craftspeople working today.

‘Mind, Hand and Time’ at Cromwell Place exhibits works by Dahye Jeong, winner of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022. Inspired by traditional Korean headwear, Dahye works with horsehair, weaving this ancient material into delicate, transparent vessels. The jury for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize unanimously selected her work because of its sensitivity and astonishing finesse.

‘Light of Weaving: Labour-Hand-Hours’ features exceptional works by leading Korean craft artists, centred around the theme of weaving. This exhibition at the Korean Culture Centre UK has been carefully curated, juxtaposing materials such as bamboo, wood and glass to play with light, tone and silhouette.

The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute presents ‘Colour Theatre: Taiwan Fibre Crafts’. This exhibition at Cromwell Place spotlights master craftspeople who specialise in braiding and weaving.

Park Royal Design District is home to an emerging cluster of creative talent and one of the Mayor’s newest Creative Enterprise Zones. Nestled among industrial buildings, iconic factories, Lebanese bakeries and specialist mechanics’ garages, you’ll find a rapidly growing collection of studios and workshops occupied by artists, crafters, makers and designers.

This unique landscape has inspired a particularly eclectic mix of disciplines, many finding inspiration from reclaimed materials and repurposed offcuts from their industrial neighbours. These recurring themes of circularity and resourcefulness, combined with high-tech, future-looking innovation, can be seen in ceramics, leatherwork, sculpture, millinery, screen-printing and small-scale fashion brands throughout the area.

Visitors can expect to browse an array of beautiful goods in a central marketplace, take part in hands-on workshops, as well as panel talks, live demonstrations and open studio tours. There are also two exhibitions — ‘Park Royal Clay’, which explores the work of eight different ceramicists working with raw clay sourced from a local excavation project, and ‘Future x Craft’, which reveals craftspeople working at the intersection of ancient practices and modern technology.

Their innovation gallery and concept store Fabrica X is shining a light on biomaterials and craftsmanship. The exhibition pays homage to ancient techniques while celebrating a new form of craft by scientists and bio-designers. Alongside this, explore zero-mile farm-to-fork produce via their vertical farming units, where fresh herbs are grown and harvested for use in the ground-floor café, Nourished Communities.

Fabrica Lab is hosting a series of biomaterial workshops, while Colorifix, one of The Mills Fabrica’s portfolio companies, is running two bacterial dye screen-printing workshops.

The Mills Fabrica is also hosting a day of enlightening talks and panels from the innovators behind trailblazing solutions for a better planet. They’re dedicated to supporting ‘techstyle’ (textile and apparel) and agrifood tech start-ups through their investment and incubation programme.

Originating in Hong Kong in 2018, The Mills Fabrica marks an exciting cross-continental chapter in the global journey to driving a more sustainable future. Journey with Rachel through her new collection of ceremonial rings, each handcrafted in London with fine traditional techniques and unique geo-cut ethically sourced stones.

Interwoven: Experimental Weaving Practices

Sarabande Foundation, established by Lee Alexander McQueen, returns for a celebration of the art of contemporary weaving. Jeweller Megan Brown, artist Anouska Samms and designer Martina Spetlova present an interactive installation amongst their own unique approaches to weaving. Learn about the tangled links between materials and personal stories that are bound within each practice.

SCP Ceramics by Floris Wubben

Amsterdam-based designer Floris Wubben creates ceramics that seek to push the boundaries of function and sculpture. Floris uses self-designed machines to create serially produced unique objects. The combination of natural materials and the influence of the designer on the production process generates distinctively shaped vases, stools, tables and more.
