Welcome
Guy Salter, Chairman
Welcome to London Craft Week 2022. Normal service is finally resumed. After two years having to delay to the Autumn, we’re back to our May slot. Despite the challenges, last year’s festival was our most ambitious, largest, and varied. This year we aim to celebrate an even wider range of beautiful objects in stunning or unusual settings, making the most of the sheer serendipity of our wonderful city. Once again you can see for yourself the mix of hard-won techniques, materials and inspiration that separates great from good. And meet creators from around the world. From the artisans behind Europe’s leading maison d’arts, emerging Nordic artist-designers and unsung heroes, to contemporary ceramicists from East Asia and extraordinary weavers from Malaysia. The usual mix of the famous and less so. I sense we are hungrier than ever to search out special things, people, and experiences. Not just for the buzz of discovery but also knowing we are supporting thoughtful and sustainable processes, ancient skills, brave new thinking, and unsung and little rewarded talent. As we look ahead with relief and excitement, I would like to put on the record my personal heartfelt gratitude to all those who have helped us, especially over the last two years. I didn’t want to dwell on it at the time, but it has been really very challenging and, although we survived, it hasn’t been without costs and now considerable debt. As a small, private not-forprofit organisation with no public funding, our sponsors and programme partners enabled us, even during Covid-19 and while they were also suffering, to continue in turn to support charities, museums, colleges, and galleries, as well as independent makers who are at the heart of what we do. My greatest thanks go to our Founding Partner, the Richemont Group, who have from the outset shown foresight, practical help for our best artisans and great but quiet generosity. Please have fun, get to as many events as you can. And, if you have time, let me know how you get on and whether there’s anything you’d like us to include in future festivals. #LCW2022 londoncraftweek.com @londoncraftweek 3

Serapian
In the world of leather goods, the name Serapian is synonymous with excellence in craftsmanship and elegant Milanese design. The Maison was founded in 1928 by Stefano Serapian and since then, Serapian’s creations for both men and women have attracted a loyal following of discerning connoisseurs. Entirely crafted in Italy from the most noble leathers and materials, Serapian stands out with its iconic Mosaico craft, refined tonal palette and soft geometric shapes. When Stefano Serapian brought Mosaico to life in 1947, he created a specialty so unique that it would become one of the Maison’s hallmarks. Delicate strips of lamb nappa are meticulously handwoven together by Serapian skilled artisans creating a geometric, hypnotic effect somewhere between Byzantine mosaics and Japanese origami. Each Mosaico creation is enriched with an inside leather tag signed with the name of the Artisan who crafted it. Balancing tradition and innovation, Serapian remains one of the few Maisons to offer a complete bespoke service. The Bespoke Atelier is housed inside Villa Mozart, a beautiful Art Deco landmark in the heart of Milan and the experience is guided by Giovanni Nodari Serapian, a third-generation family member. Serapian over time has collected one of the largest collections of Italian leathers in the world with which clients are invited to endless personalization.

Country Pavilion Malaysia High Commission of Malaysia 45 Belgrave Square SW1X 8QT tenunpahang.com
In the Malay language, ‘Tenun’ translates literally to ‘the act of weaving’. The 300-year-old craft of silk weaving originates in Pahang, Her Majesty Queen Azizah of Malaysia’s royal seat and the most expansive state of the Malayan Peninsular. It is here the skill of weaving was first introduced by a Bugis migrant. This craft of weaving that once flourished was nearly lost to Pahang as the number of weavers dwindled to a handful of just 12 in the late ‘90s. It was then that HM Queen Azizah took it upon herself to revive this dying craft. A multi-pronged revival strategy was then set in motion, one that has taken over two decades to bear fruit. Today, a total of 313 weavers live in Pahang, including skilled prison inmates. The Royal Pahang Weave exhibition, curated by Judith Clark, runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 May. It highlights the prison weaving programme, a display of a traditional floor-loom with a weaver at task, archival fabrics from the Museum of Pahang and a selection of HM Queen Azizah’s own garments and private Tenun collection.

PYTON is a multidisciplinary exhibition platform and artist group in Oslo showcasing historic and contemporary Norwegian craft, art and design that are pioneering within their field. Founded in 2019, in response to growing interest in collectible design, craft and art from the contemporary Norwegian scene, PYTON is led by Henrik Ødegaard, Richard Øiestad, Tron Meyer and Are Blytt. Their exhibition space in Oslo aims to be a pioneering platform for exhibition concepts, inviting up-and-coming designers, craft makers and artists to a common space, juxtaposed with leading figures from the past. For London Craft Week 2022, by invitation of Norwegian Crafts, Richard Øiestad and Are Blytt from the PYTON team curate an exhibition in Gallery 5 at Cromwell Place. The gallery space is divided into several room typologies as a nod to the apartment it once was, using this as a catalytic idea for creating a stage for Norwegian art and design from the 20th century to the ultracontemporary. Acknowledgements
London Craft Week is extremely grateful for the continuing support of its sponsors and partners. As a small, private notfor-profit organisation, the festival would not have grown over the last eight years without a great deal of help. From the outset, the foresight, shared values and generosity of Founding Partner, the Richemont Group, has been critical to London Craft Week’s success. It gives us great pleasure to continue our relationship with their Maisons – our Headline Sponsors – and we offer them sincere thanks. Our Series Sponsors are all associated with key London locations, supporting their tenants (our programme partners) and the festival as a whole: Grosvenor through its Pimlico Road Series; Cadogan with ‘Artisan Chelsea’ and Argent LLP with Coal Drops Yard. St James’s London is working alongside Rémy Martin on a series of events celebrating savoir faire plus a reception for the first time in Princes Arcade. The Mills Fabrica returns this year as our Innovation Partner, focusing on sustainability and social impact. Collectively, our sponsors’ support enables LCW to develop a rich and varied programme and to support the participation of charities, museums, colleges, and galleries, as well as independent makers. London Craft Week extends a warm thanks to them all.
