WELCOME TO THE 2022 EDITION OF

THE LONDON

H

ello and a warm welcome to the March 2022 edition of The London. We hope you had a great festive period and good start to the year. There was a fantastic buzz about the clubhouse at the end of 2021, and it was wonderful to see many of you taking advantage of the Christmas events and winter golf. At London Golf Club our aim is to create extraordinary member and guest experiences by delivering excellent service, a friendly environment, and brilliant playing surfaces, and we are honoured to deliver this to you each year. As our membership grows, so does the circle of intimacy, providing us with those opportunities to cultivate friendships and enhance our network. As we look ahead to the start of a new season, we are delighted to once again have a busy schedule of member golf and social events planned. It is our aim to listen to what members have to say and implement the changes necessary to keep our member calendar innovative and exciting. In every area of the business, we hope to evolve and progress in order to meet member expectations, and we are being proactive in our steps forward. In addition, we also have a host of other activities to implement at the club: from our GreenClub sustainability initiative (becoming carbon neutral) and other exciting capital projects. We will keep you informed of the works we are undertaking and look forward to seeing the club continue to thrive as a result.

Within the pages of this edition, we look back on our 2021 season, celebrating the winners of our board competitions, remembering the Cazoo Classic tournament week, and our ever-popular fireworks evening and members’ Christmas party. As with many other areas of the club, we plan to revitalise and reinvigorate The London magazine and look forward to bringing you exclusive and intriguing content throughout the season. Stay tuned. All that remains is for me to thank you again for your support over the last 18 months and, on behalf of all the team here, we wish you a very enjoyable golfing season in 2022. CAZOO CLASSIC Last year we had the honour of hosting the Cazoo Classic, formerly known as the English Open, from Thursday August 12 to Sunday August 15 2021.

londongolf.co.uk 6

It was a pleasure to welcome the European Tour back to LGC for the first time since the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship. There was a great player line-up for the event, and the sun shone all weekend which made for a strong turn-out of spectators. Although we have plenty of experience in hosting tournaments of this magnitude, a huge amount of effort went into delivering this event, with months of preparation and planning. The Heritage Course looked a picture, and the course conditions were among the best that we have ever seen. Given the circumstances and challenges that we have faced over the past year or so, we all pulled together to deliver a seamless event and the feedback from the media, spectators, players - and also the European Tour - was very positive, which was some well-deserved recognition for the club and team. It was heart-warming to hear all the kind comments from our members as well, and to see many members enjoying the tournament as both spectators and volunteers. As we look ahead to the future, we are working on our on-going tournament strategy to continue profiling the club on an international stage. The reason for this is not just to profile the club, but hosting is an important marketing tool which impacts all areas of the business.

At LGC we have a rich tournament history, which includes hosting the 2008 and 2009 European Open, the 2014 Volvo World Matchplay Championship, as well as the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship events in 2018 and 2019. We plan to continue building upon our tournament history and hope we will play host to both professional and amateur events in the future. accommodating to our plans and activity. We will keep you posted with any announcements and updates as they happen.

There are a lot of new changes happening within the golf industry and there is an exciting opportunity to make ourselves available to host an array of prestigious events and profile the club on an international stage which, in turn, will increase our exposure and also give something back to game.

London Golf Club has a reputation for providing a stage for dramatic finishes and the 2021 Cazoo Classic proved no exception as Scotland’s Calum Hill came from behind to secure a landmark first victory on the European Tour.

Overall, we would like to thank you as members for supporting these events and being

As the sun shone, the leader board continually changed on the final day as the birdies came in thick and fast. One of the most notable rounds was from

Frenchman Alexander Levy, who stormed through the field to post an eight-under 64 and finish in second place, one shot behind Hill’s winning score of 16-under-par. For Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard, it was a case of what might have been. He started the last-round with a three-stroke advantage on the field but struggled to recover from a poor start and

eventually finished in a tie for third alongside Callum Shinkwin, Jamie Donaldson, and resurgent Englishman Richard Bland. For Hill, the victory was all the sweeter after losing out to compatriot Grant Forrest at the previous week’s Hero Open as Scotland celebrated back-toback winners on the European Tour for the first time since August 2012.

Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard scored an impressive 10 under par to set the new course record of 62. The record 9 under part, was previously held by Ross Fisher and set during the 2008 European Open

James O’Connor, LGC member That was a quality weekend, came along to 3 days in a row with family. The facilities and the execution was impressive. Well done all. I know a lot of hard work went into that. Hopefully the first of many more.

Anthony James, LGC member Simply what an amazing day and I cannot thank the club enough for allowing me to play in the Pro-Am event. It’s a memory that I will treasure. A big thank you to the team.

NEW-LOOK EAST COURSE SET TO SHINE AT VERDURA RESORT IN 2022 We have certainly made the most of the terrain available to us. The course is new and fresh and I think it will be really well received. It has definitely reached the level we were striving for.

A recipient of one of Golf Digest magazine’s coveted ‘Editors’ Choice Awards for the Best Resorts in Continental Europe’ for the last six years in a row, the resort fully deserves its place among the world’s elite luxury lifestyle golf destinations. And things at Verdura Resort – part of Rocco Forte Hotels – have got even better recently with the eagerly-anticipated reopening of its acclaimed East Course – restoring the venue to 45 holes of world-class golf.

Away from the fairways, guests can enjoy an extensive array of other luxury sports and lifestyle facilities, as well as the opportunity to sample a wide variety of gastronomy, wine, history and culture that has made the region of Sicily so famous.

Effective Practice Tips FROM HEAD PGA PROFESSIONAL PAUL STUART We have all seen the guy on the range with a seven-iron beating balls at the same target and wondering why his scores are not improving at the weekend.

londongolf.co.uk 14

After most sessions on the range or even lessons, golfers haven't really learned anything, if by learning you mean making a skill usable, durable and automatic in other contexts (first tee pressure, awkward lies, etc). Fran Pirozzolo, Ph.D. Neuropsychology Pirozzolo works on performance training with PGA Tour professionals.

So how can you practice effectively? Below I have outlined an example of how you can best utilise one hour per week of quality practice. By mapping out a plan that best replicates the main scoring shots, we are turning our focus away from technique and more towards scoring. Follow this up with a 14-ball driving challenge. Most 18-hole courses require 14 tee shots with a driver, so create your own fairways on the range to mimic your course. Set yourself a goal of fairways hit and write down your score.

FIR

Technique & Driving

Focus on pitching and aim your shots between 30 to 90 yards.

Use a laser, pick out balls already on the outfield and develop ball flight by varying your ball position and the wedge you use. Develop a feel for these essential scoring clubs.

Short Game

Using your sand, gap and pitching wedges, vary the targets and distances accordingly.

ND

IN

Use an alignment rod, focus on a target, and use drills you have been given to get the feel you are looking for. Don’t worry too much about the strike.

S E CO

Head to the short-game area and drop some balls close to the edge of the green. Starting with a nine-iron, chip to a specific target, working your way to your most lofted wedge. Notice how the ball reacts when it hits the green. Does it run out or check up a little as the loft on your wedge increases? Repeat the series from semi-rough as well as downhill or uphill lies. This awareness will help develop shot decision skills required for a sharp short game.

Wedges

FO U

Finish up by moving to a 30-foot putt and see how many consecutive two-putts you can make. This is a great drill for developing a feel for lag putting.

Take a short iron and work any technical elements in your swing you are trying to fix.

S TE

Then place four tee pegs around the compass points (north, south, east, and west) five-feet away, and see how many putts you can make using two golf balls per station (total of eight putts). Again, log your score and try to beat it each time you practice.

S

15

Putting Begin by working on your start line from short range. Place two tee pegs one golf ball width apart and roll some five-foot putts working on strike and your start line. This is a good fundamental to work on.

E

uropean Tour Destinations' world-class golf venues have continued in their commitment to sustainability and ensuring they provide a positive impact on their surroundings.

For example, Quinta do Lago in Portugal recently unveiled their upgraded South Course where sustainability is the cornerstone of the development. The resort installed new irrigation pumps and upgrades to existing system to give greater control of water usage. They have also worked with GEO and VitaNativa by documenting all the flora and fauna to assist with environmental stewardship across all courses.

Before any development work was commenced at Terre Blanche in the South of France, a phyto-sociological study of the site was completed. This identified the aquatic and wetlands habitats, temporary ponds, and the forested areas to be conserved. In 2019, Terre Blanche was awarded a silver medal as part of the Golf for Biodiversity programme. It’s clear to see golf has a great contribution to make, as a pastime, an elite sports, or as a beacon for sustainability and environmental best practice.

In Mallorca, Golf Son Muntaner boasts the oldest olive tree “Na Capitana” on the island.
