REFLEX + STEVE WILLIAMSON 7.30pm
Southbank Centre Queen Elizabeth Hall
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman was a central figure in the M-Base movement and has been at the forefront of advances in jazz composition for the last 25 years. Inspired by the African diaspora while studying in Ghana, Coleman explored a new rhythmic language, fusing interlocking beats and polyphonic harmonies, offering an alternative to conventional rhythm. Appearing in London for the first time in seven years, Coleman and his formidable trio continue to push the boundaries. The opening set marks a welcome return to the concert stage for Steve Williamson. Long respected as a fiercely individual saxophonist, Williamson is one of the most original talents to have emerged in this country since he first took the scene by storm in the 1980s.

GRETCHEN PARLATO
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the past couple of years this residency has thrown an intense spotlight on artists rapidly emerging as key figures in 21st century jazz. Hot on the heels of Stefano Bollani and The Bad Plus, this year’s series becomes a meeting place for artists from the USA and Europe, whose music stretches and probes the boundaries of jazz.
Gretchen Parlato’s voice brings a refreshing delicacy to the art of contemporary singing. A standout performer at last year’s Festival, she returns here to perform her gossamer version of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Butterfly’, plus material from her latest release The Lost and Found, featuring self-penned works, and delicate jazz makeovers, that span Lauryn Hill’s ‘All That I can Say’ and Simply Red’s ‘Holding Back The Years’. BEYOND CONCERTS Learning and Participation is central to the Festival programme. As well as enjoying the great concerts on offer over the 10 days, we encourage you to delve further into the music by getting involved.
We also have a great deal of activity taking place behind the scenes. Each year we invite internationally acclaimed artists into schools and community settings throughout London to share knowledge and inspire young people. Some have public outcomes, so check out the list of projects below to learn more.
Our Beyond Concerts programme opens the door to music for all age groups, with opportunities to participate on a variety of levels. This year we have produced an exciting array of events covering a wide range of interests, with jazz workshops for toddlers, improvisation workshops for young people, family friendly matinees, masterclasses and the popular Hear Me Talkin’ To Ya series.
