05 The London Jazz Festival – London’s biggest city-wide music festival – is back once again, ready to fill every nook and cranny of the capital with live music for 10 days. The Festival brings together established stars and emerging talent in a programme that’s made up of large-scale concerts, intimate club gigs, premieres, talks, masterclasses, familyfriendly shows, workshops and a wealth of free events.

At the centre of the Festival sits a hub of learning and participation activity, involving artists, audiences, local schools and communities.

Since it began the Festival has consistently shone a spotlight on the creativity and artistic excellence of European jazz artists. This year is no exception, as the Festival presents Jazz in the New Europe, a brand new programming strand for 2012, which sees stalwarts of the European scene rub shoulders with emerging artists in a specially created programme of commissions, new collaborations and club nights. This series sits amidst a wealth of other music reflecting the riches of the European jazz scene and the extraordinary range of jazz from right across the UK also plays a crucial part.

Alongside their 21st century counterparts, the Festival celebrates the work of a gifted generation of British jazz composers, many of whom emerged during the 1960s when jazz in Europe began to create its own response to the American masters.

BBC Radio 3 will broadcast over 40 hours of music, including live recordings and additional programming that reflects the spirit of the Festival, enabling you to relive the experience on air and online.

HYPERPOTAMUS

A one-man orchestra without the orchestra, Spanish multi-vocal solo artist Hyperpotamus produces music using only his voice, a few microphones and a loop pedal. After spending six months honing his craft in the underground tunnels of Madrid’s Metro system, he was playing in front of thousands of people all over Spain, and has since released two albums and toured worldwide. He’s fast developing a name in London for his “formidable display of multitracking and microphone fiendishness” (The Guardian). Be able to say you saw him first.

Young Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola achieved international acclaim – and a five-star Guardian review – with last year’s Aurora album. The same paper described his recent follow-up, Ancient History, as “imaginative, beautifully executed contemporary jazz”.

The music of Sweden’s Cecilia Stalin takes in hip-hop, nu-jazz and swing. Her collaborative track ‘Waltz For Koop’ appeared on the soundtrack of Woody Allen’s Match Point, and she has also worked with The Streets, The Cinematic Orchestra and Charles Tolliver’s Big Band. Here she presents her latest project, Step Like A Giant – a new take on the music of Coltrane. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Following a sold-out UK tour in May, The Robert Glasper Experiment return to London with their charttopping Blue Note album Black Radio, which “triumphantly plots a route for adventurous jazzers back into the musical mainstream” (Metro). Ambrose Akinmusire has been heralded as “a major creative figure in the making” (Jazzwise) and “comparable with some of the biggest names in African-American jazz, Miles Davis included” (The Guardian). Since the release of his debut Blue Note album When The Heart Emerges Glistening, he has played to packed houses at Ronnie Scott’s and across the UK, fast becoming one of the most striking figures on today’s jazz scene. “Empirical,” wrote John Fordham in a four-star Guardian review, “have become fascinating and fearless”. Featuring Tom Farmer, Nathaniel Facey, Lewis Wright and Shane Forbes, they bring their brand new strings project to LJF, joined by the internationally acclaimed Benyounes Quartet.

Careering from music hall to concert hall, from Kurt Weill to Frank Zappa, this Swiss sextet is masterminded by singer Andreas Schaerer – described as a human incarnation of vaudeville theatre. The Festival’s signature openingnight gala returns once again with its epoch-spanning celebration of singing and song. Mara Carlyle has a lovely voice and writes beautifully crafted songs. First recognised by Matthew Herbert, she recently released Floreat, a gorgeous album, which Uncut hailed “a unique and unequivocal triumph”. For this special concert, she’ll be joined on a few numbers by Channel 4 Broadcaster Jon Snow, whose enthusiasm for her music has evolved into a fascinating new musical collaboration. Bushman’s Revenge mix the energy of rock with the freedom of jazz in the most exciting and exhilarating ways. Jazzwise called their previous album on Rune Grammafon “insanely good”. Albatrosh are saxophonist André Roligheten and pianist Eyolf Dale. Both players are “formidable improvisers” (The Guardian), and pair structured compositions with improvisation, generating a “quirkily dynamic” soundworld. Completing this Norwegian triple bill, Synkoke build choir-like drones peppered with edgy saxophone and guitar interventions, stormy percussion, inventive bass and thrash-jazz sprints, playing “with a fearful intensity, as if their lives depended upon it” (The Jazz Mann). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Cafe OTO welcome back Peter Brötzmann’s Chicago Tentet – one of the great large ensembles in free improvisation. The group’s three day residency in 2011 for Peter’s 70th birthday was a highlight in the venue’s short history. Expect a series of fascinating small group sets and the full band, featuring improv heroes from both sides of the Atlantic, performing astonishing, transformative feats of collective free improvisation each night. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Festival throws a spotlight on Finland with sets from four contrasting bands. Improvising trio Black Motor combine jazz with other genres including blues and Finnish folk. They have worked with Raoul Björkenheim, Iro Haarla and Peter Brötzmann, while their latest album was nominated for the Finnish version of a Grammy. New improvising quintet Rakka draw on influences ranging from Finnish folk music and old dance hall music, through to blues, gospel and jazz. They make their first LJF appearance around the release of their debut album. Finnish-Norwegian trio Kuara draw inspiration from Russian psalms and traditional Scandinavian folk songs, creating evolving soundscapes and contrasting stark textures with rich expression, performing from ECM album Kuára: Psalms and Folk Songs. Singer and composer Kähärän has won Finland’s prestigious Georgie Award, and the Finland Prize from the Ministry of Culture in recognition of an outstanding artistic career. With her all-star quartet she blends jazz, folk, pop and poetry.

Kurt Elling is one of the most distinctive male singers in jazz today. The label “heir to Sinatra” is a heavy one for any singer, but Kurt Elling wears it with ease,” says The Telegraph. Following his landmark Barbican concert last year, Elling returns to London with a consummate band that features long-standing collaborator, pianist Laurence Hobgood, playing from his new Concord album. Sheila Jordan’s career stretches back to the 1940s and the heady days of bebop. Mentored by Charlie Parker, and Blue Note’s first recorded jazz singer way back in 1962, Jordan has garnered legendary status. Earlier this year, she scooped a lifetime achievement award from the NEA Jazz Masters, adding to a string of accolades that verify her standing as one of the pioneers of her generation.

A pillar of European jazz since the 1960s, bassist Henri Texier played as a teenager with the bop giants Bud Powell and Dexter Gordon, before venturing into the avant-garde world jazz of Don Cherry. By the 1980s, he was leading his own groups, producing a beguiling mix of jazz and ethnic musics that has become one of the hallmarks of his approach as player and composer, and has been a continuing inspiration to new generations. He returns to London to build a pan-European expanded band around his poised trio with saxophonist Sebastien Texier and drummer Louis Moutin, adding old and new friends to create a special Festival project in the spirit of Jazz in the New Europe. Graham Collier was a trailblazer, recognised as such by Gilles Peterson when he re-discovered the riches of 1960s Brit-jazz in his ‘Impressed’ reissue series. A key member of a seminal generation of British jazz composers in the 60s, Collier’s creative spirit continued until his untimely death in 2011. Tonight, members of the BBC Big Band are joined by some of Collier’s closest associates, including musical director for the night Geoff Warren, to celebrate the groundbreaking, composer and educator. Decades later, he retains the deftly assured touch of a jazz original, whose occasional collaborations with singer Karin Krog – herself a massive presence in the evolution of jazz in Norway since the 60s – have been miniature masterpieces of European jazz. Like his predecessors Béla Bartòk and George Enescu, Romanian saxophonist Nicolas Simion draws on the reservoir of his Transylvanian native country for his compositions. Simion moves from the aggressive to the meditative, from lyrical to hot, all the while maintaining “a superb stage presence and a narrative gift as leader” (Jazzwise). With Duo Plus, multi-instrumentalists Jim Hart (drums/vibraphone) and Ivo Neame (piano/saxophone) build on a 12 year musical partnership as founding members of Loop Collective and collaborators in a number of different projects. Exploring the different textures that piano and saxophone with drums and vibraphone can create, they perform original music alongside new arrangements of standards.

British violinist/composer Clare Connors has worked with David Byrne, Spiritualised, Dagmar Krause, Keith Tippett and Michael Nyman, and her music has been used in films across the world. She brings her own project for string trio to LJF, inspired by Carla Bley’s works for big band. In a career spanning nearly seven decades, “jazz’s greatest living guitarist” (Jazz Times) Jim Hall has worked with Sonny Rollins, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Paul Desmond and Ron Carter. Hall’s influence continues to shape the work of jazz’s top guitarists, including Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell. Kenny Wheeler and one of the great big bands make a rare London appearance, performing from their latest CD – and the first recording for this band in 20 years – The Long Waiting. Originally written to commemorate Wheeler’s 80th birthday in January 2010, this music has never been performed in London.

Bosnian vocal sensation Amira hosts workshops for women attending artsdepot and Barnet Refugee Service’s Jasmine Group programme for asylum seeker and refugees during her stay. Amira wowed the group when she performed at artsdepot in 2011, so it is a pleasure to be able to bring her back this Festival to work with them. Amira performs with Bojan Z at artsdepot on Fri 9 Nov (see p.9).

Our intensive jazz journalism initiative for new writers, produced in partnership with Jazzwise magazine and based at Southbank Centre, returns for its celebratory 10th year, offering fantastic opportunities for writing enthusiasts to get professional guidance in music journalism from some of the industry’s leading names – Jon Newey, Kevin LeGendre and Mike Flynn. Former “Write Stuffers” have gone on to work for The Guardian, Jazzwise, Jazz on 3 and more. Reviews and articles will be available to read on both the London Jazz Festival and Jazzwise websites.

This year the south-east London community music project ArtsTrain is hosting a Festival celebration at the Langley Park Concert Hall in Beckenham on Mon 12 Nov at 7pm featuring talented young people from across south east and outer London. The programme showcases a specially commissioned piece written by students at Langley Park and scored by James Yarde and Gawain Hewitt. The piece is inspired by ArtsTrain’s Patron, Soweto Kinch, whose latest project ‘The Legend of Mike Smith’ premieres at The Albany (p.41). In partnership with Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning, the trio deliver a residency with ELCJO Band Leader Paul Griffiths leading up to this year’s Festival, offering guidance and inspiration to young players from east London, who make up this unique creative Orchestra. They perform together on the Barbican Freestage as a finale to the Next Generation Takes Over series.
