“This summer I managed to design and illust rate my first self-published book called ‘Make The Perfect Stor m’. It is a note book for people to keep their brainstorms all in one place. I decided to mak e it because whenever I have ideas, it’s always inconvenient and they get scribbled down in the most random places, whatever paper I have to hand. Then they get lost or misplaced. “Also, there is some research that shows writi ng ideas down by hand, rather than noting them only digitally, fosters more creative think ing. I wanted to make a space where only crea tivity happens, no to-do lists or phone numbers. Just open-minded, judgement-free thinking. So I created a fun notebook that is small enough to keep in my handbag at all times. “My neighbour is a publisher, so he’s basically letting me print it up at cost which is amazing . And I filed for my ISBN number today as well as created my publishing company, called Bourne Rive r Press. I didn’t mean to make a book this summer, but ther e you go! Just goes to show that anything can happen in life.”

“I felt that having my own space to write, such as a blog, would be the best way to build upon it and therefore created my own one focusing on films, as they have always been my passion. Since then I write a number of pieces about the film industry ever y day including reviews, trailers, posters and so muc h more. Often I am one of the first people to see them, as I work with a number of contacts and companies that I have met through my site. “The fact that I am able to write these pieces has helped me get noticed by a number of publications including Empire, Total Film, Yahoo Movies UK and many more, which has helped my care er hugely, as I am able to speak to them about future projects . It has allowed many door s to open for me, which could have been hard to find without my blog. I would suggest star ting a blog to help you in the future rega rding work and to help build the confidence to get your writing out there.”

STUDENTS'
UNION
GUIDE 2015/16
Hey there! I’m Obie Opara, your Students’ Union President and Faculty of Life Sciences and Computing Officer. Having successfully completed my undergraduate degree in Business Law and served a successful first term as your President, I’ve come to understand the importance of being an effective leader whose sole aim is to put your academic and social interests first. So far, I’ve learnt a lot, hit a few bumps and taken some minor detours, all of which have prepared me better for this year. I have also had the opportunity to work with a fantastic team, all of whom have been re-elected for another year. I will continue to work handin-hand with the staff and officer team to promote a sustainable student life experience for every student. The importance of involvement in activities such as sports, societies and volunteering can’t be overemphasised. My utmost priority is to serve you and achieve our vision of transforming London Met. Make sure you visit our website for the latest updates on news and events at londonmetsu. org.uk. Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Hi! My name is Amanda Marillier and I am your CASS Officer. I am a graduate of Fine Art (Painting) from the CASS faculty of Art, Architecture and Design. This is my second and final year as your CASS Officer and I am happy to represent you and make your time here at London Met one of the most memorable times of your life. I have gained a lot of experience in my previous roles as a Student Ambassador and Student Academic Representative (StAR). I am passionate, enthusiastic and 100% committed to the students and the university. I am all about making a difference and using every student’s skills and strengths to showcase to others what they are capable of. Communication between the students, staff and the Students’ Union is the key to move forward and improve the student experience for every individual here. My portfolio includes media (Verve Radio and Magazine), events and international students. Look out for our fun and engaging events this year! If you want to get involved in these exciting projects don’t hesitate to contact me.
My name is Marco Brunone and I am your Guildhall Business and Law (GFBL) Officer. I am an Italian national who loves London Met. A key part of being a student at London Met is not only being able to achieve the high grades but also building up networks, relationships and solid friendships. As a student, I was an active member of the Model UN Society and also a Faculty StAR of Business and Law. In my first year in office I worked towards improving student welfare, activism and opportunities. You can get involved in the Union in many ways. Join campaigns ranging from sustainability to addressing social and economic barriers in education; fundraise with our Raising and Giving initiative, which aims to raise money and give back to the community; volunteer, or join societies, sports clubs or activities which will equip you with the important skills and experience every employer is looking for. The SU is here to defend and promote your interest within the University. The strength of the SU comes from collectively working together. This is only possible with your participation because YOU are the Students’ Union! Look out for me round the university.
Hi! My name is Nicole Mitchell and I am your Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Officer. I have a degree in Social Policy and Youth Studies and as is made evident through my choice of study, I have an interest in issues that affect the wellbeing of others. I am all about change, making a difference and moving forward. Last year saw our first Women’s Forum and increased support for our Student Academic Reps (StARs). I activity campaigned on issues that will lead to improvements in the educational and student experience at London Met and championed issues of diversity and inclusion. This year I will focus on raising diversity issues, education development and support and lobby for better child care and support for mature leaners. I believe that adequate communication between students, staff and the Students’ Union is the key to a better education and university experience overall. My main priority above all else is getting your voice heard. Remember this is all about your views, your opinions and your voice. Therefore please do get in touch with me!
Make your time at University more memorable and enjoyable with MetSU (and gain some skills in the process to make yourself stand out from the rest….)
WHO ARE THE STUDENTS UNION?
The SU is a democratic organisation and registered charity, independent of the university. The SU is overseen by a Board of Trustees and supported by a team of elected officers and professional staff.
WHAT DO WE DO?
We are here to represent students’ views to the university through a number of channels, including elected sabbatical officers, Hub Committees, Student Council and Student Academic Representatives (StARs). We are also here to make your time at university more enjoyable, giving you opportunities to take part in social activities and enhance your skills.
DEMOCRACY & CAMPAIGNS Democracy is at the heart of the Students’ Union. We ensure student views are represented to the University and wider community. Let your voice be heard! Get involved….
StARs Student Academic Representative’s (StARs) are students elected by their peers to represent the voice of students on their course. StARs give students a voice in the decision-making process. They take up and act on concerns on behalf of students and provide feedback to the University.
ELECTIONS The SU holds annual elections for sabbatical officer positions and Hub Committee members for each faculty. Officers stand for a period of one year to be the full-time representative voice of students to the university.

* ACCOMMODATION, you probably have that all sorted now. Whether you’re staying in a private home, student accommodation or if you’re staying with Mum and Dad, where you live is very important! If you’re in student accommodation, make sure you follow 100% what your contract says you can and cannot do. If you don’t feel safe or you have a problem, talk to the reception team at your accommodation, your landlord, or talk to our Accommodation Bureau. They can be found on the mezzanine level of The Learning Centre at the North Campus. BOOZE is definitely popular during Freshers’ Week and with affordable drinks, The Rocket is a great place to hang out with your friends after a busy day studying. It’s also great for parties during Freshers’ Week. Just remember that nobody likes not remembering what they did the previous day and those drunk texts to your best friends or your ex aren’t that funny when you’re sober. Look after yourselves and your friends while drinking. If you don’t drink, don’t feel pressured into ‘just one shot!’ Water and soft drinks can lead to a good night as well! CASH! We’re sure you know how expensive the city is. If you are struggling with money management, saving or there are problems with your Student Finance, be sure to speak to our Student Services who can help you out with advice on budgeting, finance and the Student Finance Company. DOCTORS are all over the place and there is sure to be one close to where you live. If you have moved away from home, you’re probably going to have to find a new GP. Most student accommodations have a special open day where the local GP surgery staff show up with plenty of information, health advice, and signing up
forms. If not, check out the local area or look online to find a local doctor. Be ready for the not so delightful ‘Freshers’ Flu!’ Holloway has plenty of doctors’ surgeries, just walk the street and pick whichever you feel suits you best! EXAMS and coursework are going to be a constant part of your life for the next few years, but don’t let that put you off. The library is there to help and your lecturers are there to support you. If you feel you need that extra push or there is a problem, don’t sit in silence until deadline day, talk to your lecturers. Top Tip: Essays written overnight aren’t that great! Start long before the night it’s due. GYM memberships can be expensive! You don’t want to have to empty your wallet just to enjoy a local gym. So don’t. Your university has a fantastic gym with great equipment, friendly staff and cheap prices. If you get a membership, not only do you have access to the gym but also to the classes the gym also has to offer. Head after or before your lecture, it’s around the corner from Holloway Library, just before Arsenal stadium. Aldgate campus has a gym too. HOMESICKNESS is sure to hit you at some point. From a young age, all you want is to move away and be independent, but the moment you move away and become independent, all you want is to be back home! Every student has been there. It’s completely normal. If you find you are struggling being away from home, talk to a friend or a teacher. There’s always someone in university to listen to you. Top Tip: Skype is free and fantastic!
*MINUS A FEW LETTERS INTERNSHIPS, you’re going to be hearing this word A LOT! You might also hear it phrased as ‘work experience.’ Your lecturers love talking about internships and they love it even more when you tell them you have one! You get experience in a work environment and it helps you progress on your course.
REPRESENT you and your fellow students by becoming a StAR (course representative). Lecturers love to know what students think of their course and it’s a great way for you to express what you love and what you don’t love so much. It also looks great on your CV.
JOBS are everywhere in London, but it can still be hard to find one that suits you, fits your time schedule and pays enough to keep you living comfortably here. Check out job sites like indeed. co.uk, Studentbeans, and Gumtree. Also, Met Temps is a great site to explore if you want a temporary job and the university often offer temporary job roles there.
“SEX, baby. Let’s talk about sex.” Salt-nPepper were right, let’s talk about sex. If you find you have an issue that requires a trip to a sexual health clinic, there are plenty of options out there for you. For free condoms, birth control, STI tests and pregnancy tests, PULSE on Holloway Road, next door to the university, is free to anyone under 21 and you don’t need to book an appointment. For a bigger service, Archway Sexual Health Clinic, which is only a two minute walk from Archway tube station. provides free HIV testing with results available in just five minutes.
LIBRARIES may not have been a huge part of your life before university, but London Met’s libraries are going to become a huge part of your daily lifestyle now. With books for everything you might need, you are sure to find some literary support here for your important essays. Check out the library services online to see if your book is available, or take out an E-book without leaving your desk. Just ensure you return your books on time or you’ll find yourself with a growing fine. MENTAL HEALTH is just as important as your physical health. University is a big change for you and it’s not as easy as past graduates always say. It is normal to feel low, anxious, scared and stressed, and you are far from being alone! Many students feel this way, but not all of them feel like they can say it. If you do feel low or anxious, don’t hide it away. Talk to a friend, a teacher, or go to LMU’s Student Services who can point you in the right direction. If you don’t feel like talking to someone close to your uni, head to your GP who can help you find the best solution.
TRAVELING to university is easy! Both Holloway and Aldgate campus have great tube links and bus links. Cheapen your journeys by getting a student Oyster Card and a 1625 railcard, which will save you a 1/3 on all your rail journeys. Pay £70 for a three-year rail card and it will save you double that in your first month. It makes going home, visiting friends and exploring close-by cities so much cheaper. VERVE - get involved! If you want to take part in something great and show off your wonderful university, get involved with Verve. Whether you’re interested in the radio station or magazine, we’d love for you to get involved. We have roles open not only for writers and presenters, but also for photographers, graphic designers, researchers and more. Get in touch with the Students’ Union to learn how to be a part. Provisions include: Accommodation Bureau, Counselling and Personal Development, Disability and Dyslexia Services, Careers Information, as well as Funding Advice. The Interfaith Chaplaincy and Job Shop/Met Temps are also available. The Job Shop offers opportunities for employment inside the university. You can also speak to staff about volunteering in the community. Appointments must be made prior to accessing services, but Quick Query Sessions are available each day.
