March 11th to March 21st London Miles Gallery “A while ago, I realized that many people in my dreams often tend to be non-real - though they seem to be very good friends, or even family, when I wake up, I realize they were people I’ve never met or seen in real life. Same goes to the faces that I’ve been painting - not one of them being from the real world. Parts of them are kind of real, pulled from reference photos or memories, but most of them are composed from my imagination. Starting the process for this show with painting faces, I came to think that I’m probably most drawn to things or people that are in between worlds, straddling two or more identities, neither real nor fake. Fragmented from different worlds that bits of themselves reside in. The dualities in them all. Midway through creating paintings for the show, I started incorporating some elements of details, specifically hair - which I feel a little hesitant to elaborate on normally, as they’re somehow the easiest to be taken literally.Hair, after much thinking, I realize, is a symbol for something that grows within the self. Something that you may want to get away from, or something you want to hide behind, but you have no control over it - it’s a burden, a part of yourself, something you have to learn to accept. All the memories and the mazes of the mind hiding in all the folds and creases. It seems that I can only have a flow or work if I pull straight from my subconscious - where I have a flash of an idea and I just go ahead and do it before I get into the analytical dissection of its meanings. This process (and the fact that I didn’t know how to work any other way) used to bother me for a long time, leaving me feeling helpless as if I’m searching for something in the dark, grasping for something. Lately, I have finally learn to enjoy this process - I’m starting to see and read the symbols and metaphors deepinside the darkness of my mind, like eyes adjusting to the darkness after a while.”

Stella Im Hultberg originally studied Industrial Design at CSU, which naturally segued into work as a toy designer early on in her career. Work in the design industry serendipitously led to her building on her natural talents as an artist and a career as a self-taught painter soon followed. Having grown up in Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan, she has a diverse blend of cultural influences to pull from. Fragmented is Stella’s first Uk solo exhibition. ........................................................
