Welcome to our second annual London Runway Anthology! This anthology represents a whole year of work behind the scenes for our team, and for a diverse cast of hundreds of creatives from around the world. Each of the editorials you see here was first published in one of our twelve monthly issues throughout 2020. We’ve touched up the layouts, changed up a few colours here and there, and made sure everything looks as good as possible for this special edition, collecting everything in one coffee table book.

in London. Travel plans were cancelled, fashion shows were shut down, and photography was now something that had to be planned out so very carefully.

None of us expected, while working on our first issue back in January, that the world would change quite as much as it did over the course of the year.

We still managed to work within the government’s guidelines to produce a few safe and distanced photoshoots in the time between lockdowns, and we’re happy to say that no participants in any of these sessions came down with Covid-19.

With masks and gloves on, hand sanitiser at the ready, a healthy distance, and the smallest crews possible, we made it work without taking unnecessary risks.

Face of London Runway 2020 Three of those shoots concerned the Face of London Runway. Our annual competition was also in its second year, as we searched for one menswear and one womenswear model to represent us for a period of 12 months. We had to change up our previously set schedule and rounds thanks to the lockdown – while last year’s competition was all conducted in person, we met our entrants on Zoom before the shoot.

Here’s how it all happened: An entry form appeared on our website, allowing entrants to submit photographs, videos, and their essential details. In our first round, we had over 250 applicants! We narrowed this list down to just 70 people to go ahead to our virtual round. In Zoom calls of up to 10 models, Chief Editor Rhiannon D’Averc and modelling coach Maxine Griffiths met all of our entrants, asked them some questions about their modelling experience and goals, and put them through their paces with a virtual walk at home It was brutal to try to cut down the list, but we made it – just 30 of the models were invited to our photoshoot in Harringay. At the Pavilion in Bruce Castle Park, we set up a shooting area that was distanced from other park-goers and, kitted out in masks, three London Runway photographers (Rhiannon, Fil Mazzarino, and Mrityunjoy Mitra) snapped the final shots.

We wanted to challenge the models in all areas, so we asked each of them to complete specific tasks. With 30 models to test, you can bet it was a hectic day!

Each model was asked to pose straight-on to the camera, then while looking slightly over their shoulder, in a black and white outfit. Next, they donned colours for a celebratory pose and then while handling a prop – a fake flower picked out to go with the outfit they were wearing. After these boxes were ticked, they were turned over to other photographers for some free-choice posing and directing so we could get a feel for how they worked with different styles. After everyone had taken part in their initial shots, Maxine had everyone walk for her again – this time in person and with the ability to see everything live and in sharp focus! We then took the whole group for some quick-fire posing: first in groups of three, then as a whole group. It was a fun day with a lot of great work put in, but when it came down to the wire, we had to make some extremely difficult choices. There were some very talented models in this group, but only 12 of them could make it through to the final round. You’ll be able to see those 12 models in the images that we used for the public voting round later on in this anthology. In the end, though, there could only be two: Hannah S Lewis and Orpheus Sloma emerged victorious as our Face of London Runway 2020 winners. We had a record number of votes from the public, and it was a well-deserved win on both counts! For their winning shoots, we knew we had to be smart. We needed to do something that could fit the government regulations at the time, take the fewest risks, and also maintain the smallest possible crew. Here’s how we made it work.

THE WINNERS’ DAY We decided to get everything done on one day, in one location (setting up a home studio chez our Chief Editor – that’s me talking to you now, by the way!). We also opted for a beauty shoot combined with an accessories shoot – two forms of editorial that don’t require a lot of wardrobe. This meant we could keep down the amount of brand involvement and keep the whole process simple. On set were the two models, myself and my assistant (who also happens to be my husband!), our trusted and talented

makeup artist Sidrah Sardar, and the designer behind Sassy Freak jewellery. Yes, we managed to create two full cover shoots at the same time with a team of just six people. It’s amazing what you can do when needs must! On the day, we set up two different rooms in our house – one which we converted to a studio with full lighting rig and backdrops, and one which served as a makeup and prep room. Hannah and Orpheus traded off turns in the makeup chair and in front of the lens, so that both Sidrah and myself only had one person to work with at a time. It was a fun and creative session that saw us grabbing colourful items from around the house to use as props, dancing to an upbeat soundtrack of pop music playing in the background, and sanitising just about anything in sight. I shot both Hannah and Orpheus on the same backdrop and with the same lighting set-up – something we could achieve easily because they were both shooting from the chest up, and both have similar colouring. Once we knew we had everything in the bag, we had a bit of a play around with different lighting set-ups, but the original set turned out to be the most successful!

Now came the tricky part. You see, both sets were shot on a plain white backdrop. This is fine for keeping the focus on the model, but it’s also a bit boring – so then came the need to change out those backdrops for bright colours, each of them fitting the particular shot!

On my hard drive, I’ve got roughly another 30 shots for each of the models with bright pastel Unless you were there on the day, backdrops which didn’t make the you would never know that they cut. It was so much fun to transform were part of the same session!

DANCE SENSE A dance is one of the few areas where we can be ourselves. A dance is beyond conditions and taboos. A dance is where two souls meet, and have no rules, no titles, no limits. Using vintage stylization, the author wanted to show a connection with the past. Some centuries ago, a dance was the only socially accepted interaction a man and a woman could have before marriage. Even though dance partners couldn’t express their feelings in public, they could feel them through touches and looks while dancing.

#SBCHALLENGE

The editorial you’re about to see is special – so special, in fact, that we decided it would be a great subject for our second in-depth look behind the scenes.

This photoshoot was organised for the #SBChallenge started by Samanta Bullock in response to the Vogue Challenge. The Vogue Challenge asked participants to edit themselves into the cover of a magazine, and this naturally brought up questions of representation and diversity in the media. The SB Challenge’s twist on this theme was to highlight only models who are less represented in media: those with visible or physical differences to the usual models. Inspired by Samanta herself, whose promising career as a young model flourished again after she became wheelchair-bound, it highlighted something that hasn’t been talked about enough in the industry: that those with other differences, deserve the spotlight too.

Each model would also have gone through to one of our staff writers for a brief interview, recorded on the day and then transcribed later. It would have been a busy and happy day with lots of networking, chatting, hugging, and dancing to a soundtrack filling the space. A group effort to create something magical. But – and here in the film is where you’d hear the record scratching as the needle was abruptly lifted – none of that was possible. We had to socially distance, especially considering that many of our models were in high-risk groups.

My name is Samanta Bullock. I’m the founder of the I’mperfection shop. I’m a Brazilian living for 13 years here in the UK. I’m a former para-athlete, number one wheelchair tennis player from Brazil. We got a silver medal at the Parapan in 2007 in doubles, and I played three World Cups representing Brazil. I started modelling when I was 8 years old. I had a gun accident at the age of 14 and I became paraplegic and because of that I couldn’t be a model anymore. But at the age of 26, I started modelling again. I did London Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week - and I considered at that point we already had some models but that the brands were not

accessible. They aren’t catering for disabled people and we could see disabled people were not represented in any editorials, magazines, or media and so I came up with this plan that through collaboration with the designers we would put the seed of inclusion. We also work representing and giving them some consultancy, and now our main thing is our social project. We created a film for LFW in September that was called I’mperfection. We gave the name to the shop to bring in the idea that you are perfect the way we are, because no one is perfect. London Runway not only gave space for the SB Challenge [Issue 55] but also the cover of the magazine - this is going to be a big change.

My name is Mary Russell. I started off just playing around being a model back in 2014 because I just thought that there aren’t any models like me around. I just started asking if anyone would want to feature me and most of them came back and said yes, and it sort of took off from there. I did that for a good few years and then I switched into a bit of TV, did a bit of reality, documentary. Now I’m learning to be a fashion designer, so I’ve gone through wearing designer clothes to now wanting to make them myself - because ill-fitting clothing for people that look a bit like me is a bit sad, really. My name is Kirpal Bhogal. I’m 36 years old and I have a skin condition called vitiligo. I’ve had it since I was 10 years old. It started off on my knees as small dots and gradually over the years it,s spread. The thing with vitiligo is it comes and goes and increases and decreases itself, so there have been years where it was dormant and there’s been times when it’s got really aggressive. From what I’ve seen, it’s normally linked with stress and emotion. I’ve only started embracing my skin and being open with it in the last 3 years - before that I was quite hidden about it and it was hard getting out of the house. I’m married, I have a little son - he’s four.

My name is Louise Hunt. I’m 29 years old and I’m a two-time Paralympic athlete. I’ve competed in wheelchair tennis in the last two Paralympic games and I’m hopefully aiming for the next one in Tokyo if it ever happens. My biggest passions are helping people, especially young people, and trying to make a difference and break down stereotypes. Alongside my tennis I have always and still am doing and will continue to do so. I work with a couple of different charities that help people with all sorts of disabilities, but mainly learning disabilities and mental health disabilities, and helping them in a massive variety of ways. I work a lot with young people in schools to help them work on their personal development and help them reach their potential too.

My name is Rebecca Legon. I’m 40 years old and I’m a mother to two amazing children - Olive is 5 and Arther is 3. I’m a disability activist so via social media I promote a healthy attitude with living with a limb difference. I was born with a condition called PFFD – it’s basically where my leg grew from my knee down at my hip, and I had an amputation when I was 8 years old. It’s taken me a really long time to accept myself, so I try to inspire others as when you finally accept yourself you can live a more fulfilled, mentally happy life. I also do a lot of sport and exercise and a lot of challenge-lead sports, so last year I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with a lot of other amputees and next year I’m joining a group of military amputees to climb Mount Elbrus in Russia. Just because we may have a certain weakness, what I kind of believe in is that your body adapts - so I have one leg; I’m stronger in other ways. I also work for an amazing charity called Limb Power and it’s a charity which rehabilitates amputees back into sport and an active life.

My name is Lily Mills and I play tennis. I go to college. Lily's Mum: She’s a tennis player and she won two gold medals for Great Britain in Abu Dhabi in 2019. Lily was born with galactosemia and E Coli meningitis at four days old, which left her with a brain injury. She is playing for the Great Britain disability tennis squad and she wants to be a model, but everywhere I’ve ever taken her said no and it was Samanta that gave her an opportunity. She’s had one paid job, but it doesn’t matter because it makes her feel good and she likes doing the modelling. She loves it.

PHOENIX RISING PHOENIX RISING is the latest collection of KORN TAYLOR Fashion Design for London and Milan Fashion Week SPRING/SUMMER 2021 Korn Taylor describes the collection as rising like a phoenix from the ashes when his fashion business in Milan emerges stronger, smarter, and more powerful from the catastrophe of the coronavirus pandemic. During the total lockdown in Milan, Korn Taylor and his team were greatly affected as all of his wedding gowns and debutante ball gowns were not sold due to cancelled events. He managed to thrive by creating fashionable face masks from the leftover fabrics and that became his only source of income during those times. When Italy's virus curve fell, Korn Taylor was invited by Casting Bambini, one of Italy's biggest Modeling Agency for Kids, and they managed to create a Grand Fashion Show in Sicily last July 2020. "Phoenix Rising" is what he experienced during the pandemic and he used this as his inspiration to create his collection for Spring/Summer 2021 Fashion Week in both London and Milan.

Vivienne Monique also won the Super Model and Best in Long Gown awards during the pageant.
