LONDON RUNWAY
EDITOR'S LETTER This month, we returned to our fashion capital for the three mostawaited words of any creativityloving fashion fan’s calendar: Graduate Fashion Week. GFW is a whole different kettle of fish to LFW. Forget about big names and star-studded front rows. Forget about supermodels strutting the catwalk and racing across London in all different directions to get to your next show or presentation. Most of the Graduate Fashion Week shows are held under just one roof - the Truman Brewery - which makes it a much easier visit on any given day. You can browse student creations out in the display area and then return to the catwalk space for the next show, probably even taking the same seat. The models on the catwalk are often professionals, but won’t be the biggest names. Which is okay because it allows the students to get a lot more creative with their casting, lending to what tends to bw
a more diverse display. As for the designer names? You won’t have heard of them - not one. But all that may change in the future. Scan these pages carefully. Once upon a time, designers like Alexander McQueen, Christopher Bailey, Giles Deacon, Hussein Chalayan, Stella McCartney, and Julien Macdonald all showed their first collections to the world at Graduate Fashion Week events. One of the designers you see in these pages - or many - could end up being the brightest new thing to grace the catwalks of London Fashion Week. From there, the world could be their oyster. There was one surprise for us in the calendar this year - long after we’d already decided on our schedule for publishing in 2024, London Fashion Week announced a special celebration in honour of its 40th anniversary: a new showcase for June, aiming to spotlight culture and diversity.
We couldn’t leave you without at least a taste of those goings-on, so even though this is the Graduate Fashion Week issue, you can still expect to see some LFW content here and there. It may be interesting to compare and contrast the merits of designers from both events. While the LFW designers tend to be more seasoned and polished, GFW tends to focus on raw creativity: concept over perfection. Many of the looks might not be the kind of thing you’d walk down the street in unless the street was leading you to another fashion show - and many will make you look twice. Raw creativity or polished perfection - which do you prefer? Feel free to make your voice heard over on our Instagram. You’ll find us at @londonrunwaymag, where we’ll be sharing close-up shots and our favourite selections from the full galleries you find in this issue. We’ll see you again in October for our next LFW issue.

LONDON RUNWAY
THIS SEASON Explained by Carol D’souza
FASHION Graduate Fashion Week 2024 was a spectacle of innovation and creativity. Bold and artistic approaches on the runway pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion design. It was a vibrant testament to the creativity and innovation of the new generation of designers. Sustainability took centre stage, with designers championing eco-friendly materials and zero-waste techniques. This led to unconventional uses of materials, patchwork, and frayed edges. Beatrice Wilson from Bath Spa wowed with daring leather tops, braided hair dresses, and skirts made from hair and belts. At NTU, skirts bedazzled with children's toys and accessories took us back to childhood. Frayed and raw fabrics were prominent, with designers making a
statement through coats and dresses crafted from faux grey hair. Fabric mixing was another standout trend. Jodie Alford paired knit with plaid, and Jasmine Mitchener combined pinstripe office materials with bright-coloured mesh at Bournemouth. Chen Yan from Bath Spa brought vibrant knits to black blazers, creating eye-catching contrasts. Lo Thi Thanth Dung’s collection itself was named “rawness”. We walked the streets of nostalgia when Liverpool John Moores presented heavily textured, fashionable edits of “Elmo” and “Big Bird” from Sesame Street. Nicole Singleton from Bournemouth University brought a touch of nostalgia with her intricate patchwork creations, blending old and new techniques, a theme also seen in Winchester's collection. Nadine El Garhy juxtaposed nonsense and reality with folk-style silhouettes in corporate pinstripe fabrics. Dramatic silhouettes made a strong statement across the runways. Designers embraced voluminous shapes that redefined proportions, from floor-length puffy sleeves and larger-than-life shoulders at UCA, NTU, Bath Spa, and Bournemouth to exaggerated hips and absurdly shaped pants at GFW International. This season embraced unconventionality with construction, shapes, and textures, as seen with the huge red lipped pants at Northumbria. Deconstruction and layering were everywhere: at Bath Spa we saw multiple expertly combined elements to create visually complex pieces by Jay Bacha. Xiaoling Zhang also played with complex, multi-layered designs that played with shape and space. Even wedding attire was deconstructed at Norwich University of the Arts.
PAGE 6
Utility pockets and hardware in unconventional placements on the body were seen at NTU. Tones ranged from neutrals to bright sunset colours and strong blues. Large colour blocking was another highlight, with Ellie Hemmings and Emma Sayles from Bath Spa using bold, solid hues to make striking visual impacts. Inclusivity and diversity shone through, with collections celebrating a wide array of cultural influences and catering to diverse body types and identities. Collections were bold and artistic, featuring unconventional materials and avant-garde concepts. Craftsmanship shone through with intricate handwork and bespoke tailoring, emphasising handmade fashion and sustainability.
HAIR
We saw a lot of hair on the runway more so in the designs than on the models. Head accessories were the stars, leaving visible hair to natural and simple looks, with the exception of the half up side buns at UCL. Part of the challenge of Graduate Fashion Week is that the models must walk for a number of different courses, wearing styles designed by different students. Not only will there be differences between the courses themselves geographically, but also within the individual students. With this in mind, a blank canvas is a great way to ensure that the hair matches well with any potential look, instead of overshadowing the designs by the fact that it simply doesn’t fit.
BEAUTY Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Makeup was heavily focused on the eyes this season. Other elements were mostly kept clean.
ACCESSORIES This season, oversized trickled into everything. From umbrella hats to hoods that transform into capes at NTU, exaggeration was a “big” theme. Bags covered most of the torso, and giant babydoll bows adorned heads at Kingston. Everyday objects turned into bags, like Jasmine Mitchener’s martini glass purse at Bournemouth. There were giant flower bouquet hats paired with flower gardens growing out of boots. Shoes were replaced with swim-fins, a teddy bear was utilised as a bag, and black hair was used as a purse at De Montfort. The oversized umbrella hat merged these themes seamlessly. Ethnic influences were seen with face jewellery and headwear at UCA, UEL, Winchester, and more.
Bold and bright colours were prominent: orange eyeshadow at Winchester and stark green glossy eyelids at Liverpool John Moores. Black dots were placed under eyes at UCL, giving models a four-eyed look. Silver lids at various shows nodded to a futuristic world, juxtaposed with knitwear and lingerie at Sheffield Hallam. Dark outlined eyes at Kingston were striking yet allowed the designs to shine.
MISE EN SCENE The use of digital technology was widespread, with graduates experimenting with augmented reality and virtual showcases, blurring the lines between fashion and tech. At GFW, schools used screens as blank slates to highlight designer names, as visual guides, or to show the process behind their work. Northumbria placed models centre stage, surrounded by the audience. Kingston showcased organised choreography, adding a dynamic element to their presentation.
LONDON RUNWAY
CULTURAL SHOWS The theme of this year’s special London Fashion Week July edition was culture and diversity, and this was reflected in a number of shows that took pride in sharing the traditional and modern looks from certain countries. We’re sharing three such collective shows in these pages: the Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese showcases. You can expect an interesting mix of looks from these shows, ranging from traditional textiles and prints - and even a presentation of looks from a century ago, in the case of the UA in UK Community’s Ukrainian event right the way through to modern and boundary-pushing looks being produced by contemporary designers today.
It doesn’t stop there, though. We’re also bringing you looks from a few more shows that weren’t on the official calendar - you can distinguish each of the types of show you will see by circular badges on the title page for each event. No badge? It’s Graduate Fashion Week, our main focus for the issue. LFW badge? That means the show was on-schedule at London Fashion Week. Off-schedule badge? That means the show wasn’t part of the official LFW or GFW schedules, and was instead organised independently by the show runners.
was still never enough time and space to cover absolutely everything. That’s why we’ve narrowed down our focus to just a few shows, with the majority of our coverage taken from the official schedules.
Dozens, if not hundreds, of these offschedule shows happen every year. We only have the space to bring you a few of those during these pages - as you’ve seen in years past, when we produced an issue every month, there
The lack of official sanction does not always reflect quality - more usually, it’s a decision a designer takes based on budget, as you’ll understand when you browse the looks on offer at all types of shows in this issue.
HASSANA DUADA SS2024:
ULTRA FEMININE COLLECTION, A DIVE INTO FEMININITY AND FLUIDITY Rhiannon D’Averc - 27th July 2024 Hassana Duada, by Hassana Dauda Ismail, is a premium-end ready-to-wear women’s clothing label. The focus is on both form and function with a devotion to clean lines, sensual cuts, and fluidity. "The Ultra Feminine" is its UK flagship collection. The first look is an off-white midi dress with a detachable flowing scarf. This captivating ensemble was showcased at Cheshire Fashion Week 2024. This look immediately catches the eye with its intricate button details and waist outer layer, reminiscent of the iconic 1953 Ronald Paterson suit. The dress effortlessly blends fluidity and structure, creating a mesmerising silhouette that epitomises sophistication at any awards ceremony or special occasion.
curves, allowing women to embrace their femininity gracefully with classic style. The change in fabric and colour breaks away from the single-tone palette of the collection, giving a variety of options. Lastly, an off-white structured peplum blazer and pants. This power suit redefines the concepts of confidence and sophistication. Its slim silhouette and structured bodice create a timeless ensemble that every woman needs in her wardrobe, exuding an air of authority, poise, and femininity. The brand Hassana Duada has stolen our hearts with its unique designs. To shop the brand visit hassanaduada.com - we are sure you’ll find a piece you love just like we do.
The second look from the collection is a showstopper off-white mini dress, boasting dramatic sleeves and a cascade of buttons from top to hem. This versatile piece allows individuals to showcase their unique personalities, whether they dress it up or down. Its edgy yet sophisticated design is a testament to the modern, confident woman who knows how to make a statement. Elegance reaches new heights with the third look, a beautiful black maxi dress. Intricate detailing at the upper bust area, back, and sleeves add a touch of refinement to this already stunning piece. The knot drape detail at the front accentuates

Where are you from originally? I’m from Kyiv, Ukraine Do you have an unusual talent or party trick? Yes, I have a talent to see and create beauty around me. I love fashion and I think my style is my signature which is unusual, creative, feminine and powerful.
What would surprise people to know about you? I’m a refugee and I moved to UK because of the war. I needed to start my life again here alone which I managed successfully and I’m so proud of myself. I found my audience in London and keep creating, loving, enjoying my life as a freelance model now. What are your modelling ambitions? I want to be a successful international model who has own style and new view for modern modeling. That model who promotes freelance and independence, collaborates with big companies and brands. She doesn’t call it a job, this is her passion, lifestyle and naturalness.
