Face of London Runway: Finalists 304
s ' r o t i d E ter t e l Welcome to our anthology of editorials from 2019! London Runway has had a fabulous year, and we're so excited to share some of our biggest highlights with you. What really strikes you as you look at our year in full is the real range of diversity and difference across all of the editorials we see. There is so much creative talent out there, both here in London and around the world. London Runway reached our 45th issue in December 2019, and while that issue covers many of our highlights from the year, some of them bear repeating. 2019 saw us switching to monthly issue releases, from an original schedule of once per fortnight. We spoke to many fascinating people with a lot to say, from musicians to actors to fashion designers. All of this is still available to read online via our website, londonrunway.co.uk, so I won't go on about it too much in these pages. To serve as an introduction to this volume, I wanted to share some stories from behind the scenes. As Chief Editor, I not only
approve and commission shoots but also take them myself. My background in photography was the inspiration behind launching London Runway in the first place, and while I no longer shoot for each issue, I have contributed to a number of the editorials here.
were ready. I'd done a bit of scouting ahead of time and had found some really interesting locations, including a beautiful field of long grass which looked just perfect in the orange light of the sun, at precisely the right angle for the start of our shoot.
I'd like to start with talking about Ruislip Tribe, an editorial which we shot to celebrate the winners of our Face of London Runway competition. Johnny and Shelby won a cover shoot each, and in order to kick off that prize, we started with Shelby's cover.
So, we headed over... through a lot of bushes and grasses and long, catching branches, which were much easier to navigate when I was hunting around on my own. Now with an entourage - including our models, Shelby in a floor-length dress and Johnny bare-chested - it suddenly seemed a lot more wild. We were holding back branches, jumping over logs, avoiding puddles, and trying to keep everyone in one piece.
The concept required us to head into Ruislip Woods, which meant taking everything with us - wardrobe, accessories, models, makeup artists, and designers with their looks, not to mention myself and my assistant. We're no strangers to working on location, and I always know that I can trust our frequent MUA, Sidrah, to put something together even if the only 'table' she has is a tree stump. As the warm weather season was starting to come to a close, this meant leaves and seed pods beginning to tumble down and varied conditions in the weather. So, between shots, I was brushing things away from jewellery boxes - and when I got home, I ended up tipping out a whole bunch of bits of tree from all of my bags. We got the makeup done well enough and changed into the first looks, and we
PAGE 3
We got there, of course, and the results were worth all of the hassle. However, there was one twist left in the tale of this photoshoot: we got all the shots and started packing away, only for me to realise that I had set one item aside earlier and then never remembered to go back to it. Thus a hurry to redo the last few
shots and make sure we got that item in as well! What's it like to run a photoshoot? It's something that we likely take for granted, being already in the industry, but I suppose for other people it remains a bit of a mystery. So, here's a quick explanation of the process that we undertake for in-house shoots at London Runway. First, I always start off with a moodboard. This is usually pulled from Pinterest, our previous work, and the work of our collaborators to create both an inspiring and a realistic board. I include the theme or overall feel of the shoot, the models, the wardrobe, and the makeup style. Sometimes we're going for something very close to what is on the board, or sometimes - as with the Refraction editorial - we have to pull a bit of inspiration from every look on the board to create something entirely new. Then we do the casting and find the location. Sometimes this requires rebuilding the moodboard a little to adjust it to what we really have. Now I create a call sheet. This details who is involved in the shoot, what time they should arrive, where we will meet, and how the timings of the day will work out. With all this prep work done, the last thing remaining is to actually do the shoot. Things don't always work out on the day. I've had models flake out or simply fail to show up, prompting frantic calls to our back-up choices. There might be too many members of the public to get clear shots, part of the wardrobe might not arrive, and rain might fall on an
outdoor location. What I've learned over the years is to always have a back-up plan, to think on my feet, and to accept that things might not go how you expected. There's a lot of trickery in photography, too. You can't always tell what might be going on. Golden Wedding was shot in a living room with the models sitting on a sofa, while the Face of London Runway finalist shots were taken in an office in a little corner just big enough to hold a backdrop. One of our biggest shoots of the year was Slime, featuring Bate Nate H. We had already interviewed him in a previous issue, so when it was time to collaborate again, a photoshoot seemed in order. We shot around the streets of Shoreditch, stopping whenever we found an interesting backdrop to try out. I have always loved shooting in that area of London - the graffiti changes often, there are bright colours everywhere, and so many interesting nooks and crannies to find. The shoot was a lot of fun - we had a lot of laughs, hit a lot of spots, and had a whole bag of great looks to choose from. When we were finished, it was time to get down to post-production. In this case, that didn't just mean my usual editing process - I also handed the finished images over to our thenhouse-artist, Joe Bailey. You'll see tons of Joe's illustrations in our pages on a regular basis, as he still creates things for us from time to time. He took the theme of slime and really ran with it, making the images literally drip. This was definitely one of our most exciting and innovative covers of the year, though we had plenty of other great moments. Some of the editorials here are also unique in the sense of presenting something that we had never done before. Take, for example, Hot House
PAGE 4
Flowers. Cori Chella provided some of her poetry alongside the photographs, adding another level of art and emotive layering that we had never tried before. The results were fantastic, and we love pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve in this way. We also had our first childrenswear editorial with Vivienne Monique, a set dedicated to a child model who really carries off some fabulous looks. This year was our first time bringing in international editorials, too: we launched on Kavyar midyear and have since switched to using it as our sole submission platform. Through that service, we have published photographers from Russia, Canada, the USA, Australia, Switzerland, and many other locations. Their work is exemplary, and to help you to find them online we've included social media handles in all cases where we had them. We encourage you fully to go check them out - and to follow us, too, on Instagram and Twitter at @londonrunwaymag. We're also on Facebook under the same name. Follow us throughout 2020 as we bring more high-quality and hopefully ground-breaking editorials to light - and if you enjoy this volume, look out for our next from January 2021. Until then, I'll sign off as I do in every issue: Enjoy -

London Runway presents a collection of editorials from their 2019 publications. With photographers and creatives from around the world, the photographic stories cover angles as diverse as the way humans and animals can co-exist peacefully, to breast cancer awareness, to the pervasive negative influence of the media on self-image. Full-colour sets showcase beauty, menswear, womenswear, and even kidswear, across more than 350 beautiful photographs. Models include singers and artists, and the Face of London Runway 2019 finalists and winners. Some of the images are shown alongside poetry, illustrations, and modern graphic design techniques to maximise their impact. Curated by Chief Editor Rhiannon D'Averc, this edition also includes a foreword with behind-the-scenes stories about the process and creation of some of the editorials showcased within. London Runway is an indie fashion magazine based in the UK. We present fashion in a more inclusive way, with an eye to sustainability, ethics, and equality along the way. We discuss important social and cultural points, showcase up-and-coming designers, musicians, and artists, and cover the big shows alongside the little ones. Launched in 2017, London Runway is available at londonrunway.co.uk.
