BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS 2016/17 ~ LSO.CO.UK
Welcome from Karen Cardy, LSO St Luke’s Centre Director LSO St Luke’s – the London Symphony Orchestra’s own venue and music education centre – can be found on Old Street, just minutes from the bustling market stalls of Whitecross Street and on the edge of the thriving Tech City that has sprung up by the Old Street Roundabout. Yet, stepping into the venue’s Jerwood Hall on Thursday lunchtimes, you can feel a million miles away from life on the busy streets outside. Each year, it’s a real pleasure to see so many people taking their seats in the venue, immersing themselves in the music, and enjoying performances by some of the world’s most talented artists, all selected by our partner BBC Radio 3. Our Lunchtime Concerts are the perfect opportunity to take an hour or two out of your day. You can enjoy a bite to eat or a cup of tea in the LSO St Luke’s Café before and after the performances, hear live introductions from BBC Radio 3’s presenters, and listen again to every concert when they’re broadcast at a later date. The 2016/17 season promises to be very special. I hope that you’ll be able to join us. Karen Cardy LSO St Luke’s Centre Director

BBC Radio 3 Emma Bloxham introduces the 2016/17 season of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts Every season for the past 14 years, BBC Radio 3 has welcomed some of the world’s best and brightest chamber music stars to perform at LSO St Luke’s, bringing the sounds of string quartets, countertenors, solo pianists, choirs and more to the venue. We hope that you’ll join us during 2016/17 – and you won’t be short of choice if you do. With 20 concerts in the season, we’ll be exploring a wealth of themes and connections, with spotlights on artists, ensembles, composers, instruments and even a pivotal moment in history. Tchaikovsky revered Mozart for the clarity, elegance and beauty of his music; in October and November’s Mozart & Tchaikovsky series (see page 6), ten musicians investigate this obsession, pairing music by both composers. Momentous events of Russian history – the two revolutions of 1917 – are the starting-point for Russian Revolutionaries (page 10), as four pianists survey music written both before and after life in the country changed irrevocably a century ago.

In March, we uncover compelling links between another pair of composers, the eminently tuneful Bruch & Vaughan Williams (page 12), a series that forms the inimitable Nash Ensemble’s third residency at LSO St Luke’s. And there’s a focus on string instruments over the course of the season, as the charismatic viola soloist Lawrence Power (page 8) invites a group of his closest musical friends to collaborate on stage in autumn, and the rich, singing Voice of the Cello (page 14) is placed centre stage in spring. We’re looking forward to another season of concerts in this inspiring venue. I hope that we’ll see you in the audience and that you can catch the broadcasts on Radio 3 too.
