io 3 BBC Rad Concerts e Lunchtim MOZART CHAMBER MUSIC Breathtakingly intimate and expertly crafted, chamber music can reveal a different side to the world’s greatest composers, something that BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts at LSO St Luke’s have explored throughout their ten-year history. Of all composers in the history of chamber music, there can be few who were as prolific – or inventive – in this area as Mozart. Autumn’s eight-week series celebrates this, shining a spotlight on the Classical composer and revealing the variety, imagination and sheer beauty that lie behind his vast chamber output.

The eight concerts take in works drawn from each stage of Mozart’s career (starting with the First String Quartet, written when he was just 14 years old) and spans music for solo piano to the 13-instrument ‘Gran Partita’ Serenade. Sonatas, Quartets, Quintets, Divertimentos and more are also visited along the way, showing the peerless compositional genius that allowed Mozart to establish chamber music as a vehicle for both personal expression and serious artistic exploration. Intense brushes of Mediterranean musical colours – from fado to flamenco – permeate the elegant landscapes of Dutch singer Nynke’s inimitable chanson creations. Sung in Frisian – her music nurtures a strong sense of communion by re-establishing spiritual bonds with the land.

UNSOUND: LUSTMORD + PIANOHOOLIGAN Welsh-born, California-based Brian Williams (aka Lustmord) brings his solo audio-visual show to London. Having first emerged as an associate of industrial outfit SPK in the 80s, Williams embarked on a solo career which has seen him at the forefront of dark and daring ambient music for over 30 years. Polish jazz pianist and composer Piotr Orzechowski (aka Pianohooligan) completes the double bill. One of the most awarded musicians of his generation, the 23-year-old received first prize at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition and has collaborated with an eclectic list of artists including Krzysztof Penderecki and Adrian Utley from Portishead. THE FRISIAN FADO SINGER MAKES HER LONDON DEBUT SPECIAL GUESTS

The Barbican’s critically-acclaimed Transcender weekend aims to boldly explore spiritual, sensual and psychadelic music from around the world, and the genre-bending Dutch singer Nynke fits the bill perfectly. Her inimitable style blends intense Mediterranean sounds – notably fado, the Portuguese melancholic song tradition – with the poetry of the historically rich Frisian language, spoken only in the northern part of the Netherlands. Nynke’s ground-breaking albums present a crosscultural smorgasbord inspired by her travels around the world. The first establishes the unprecedented ‘Frisian fado’ fusion; the second and third introduce Latin American and Mongolian influences respectively. This year Nynke presents her new album Alter, made in collaboration with acclaimed Spanish guitarist and producer Javier Limón. In his words, ‘The music of the words in Frisian is very strong, and in the songs you hear the sound of the landscape, the far sights, the huge sky and the green. Then there’s this exceptional voice; when Nynke starts to sing, something happens’.

This autumn is a truly exciting time for families looking to spend quality time together. Between 18 October and 3 November, the first ever UKwide festival of family-oriented arts events, run by the team who brought you the Cultural Olympiad, will take place. From music to theatre, to circus, art and dance, the Festival has been designed with all generations in mind – not just the kids! At LSO St Luke’s, contributions include a free Friday Lunchtime Concert (25 October) of Russian music led by presenter Rachel Leach where audiences are encouraged to get involved, and a performance of two Mozart String Quartets (31 October) recorded by BBC Radio 3 and suitable for over-12s. Outside of the Festival, our popular Shake, Rattle & Roll workshops and story-telling for under-5s continue; these book up fast so get in there quickly! Award-winning mandolin virtuoso and composer Chris Thile is considered by many to be one of America’s most innovative and versatile musicians. Far from being restricted by the mandolin’s country music origins, Chris’ playing embraces a vast and eclectic mix of styles and genres; everything from jazz and rock to Bach and bluegrass. Success came early for Chris – at the age of twelve he established himself as a child prodigy and a talent to be reckoned with, winning first prize at the prestigious Walnut Valley Festival mandolin competition. Since this early success, his career has gone from strength to strength gathering massive critical acclaim and a host of prestigious awards and accolades, including a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2012 and the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Chris’ most recent projects include a collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the release of an album of Bach Sonatas and Partitas and the completion of his Concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra.

LSO Discovery opens the doors to new generations of music-makers to play alongside the inspirational musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra. The first ten years at LSO St Luke’s has given thousands of people the opportunity to discover the thrill of playing music together and has embedded the work of the LSO in the local community. Eclectica concerts can be difficult to describe because they’ve often never been heard before. In 2013/14 we have three concerts with three groups singing stories of family and home. Trumpeter Arve Henriksen grew up in Norway, and you can hear its landscape echo through his music: the ice-groan of a glacier in the electronics, his unique trumpet sounding somewhere between a bird of prey and the wind blowing through pine trees. On 26 November he collaborates with teenage girls’ choir Choralia, and people who live and work around LSO St Luke’s and sing in our Community Choir, in a jazz requiem marking the mass shooting on Utøya in 2011 when 69 were killed, 33 under the age of 18. Estonians experienced a ‘Singing Revolution’ (1987–91), when thousands gathered to sing forbidden patriotic songs, risking their lives to proclaim their desire for independence from the Soviet Union. On 22 January the Grammy award-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir explore the mystical soundworlds of Estonian composers Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis, and movements from the Russian Orthodox Rachmaninov Vespers, with Middle Eastern interjections from saxophonist and clarinettist Gilad Atzmon. The Campbells of Greepe, on 15 April, are one of the great dynasties of Gaelic song. The family’s roots lie in a tiny crofting township on the Isle of Skye, where music was the constant accompaniment to everyday life. Pipers and singers who love to dance, it’s no surprise that they’re considered the masters of puirt-à-beul, Gaelic mouth music, and their songs encompass a whole musical world – pibroch songs, work songs, and the songs of their own community. Amongst the special guests joining three generations of the family are virtuoso American step-dancer, Nic Gareiss, and award-winning piper, Lorna MacDougall. BRITTEN’S ‘FRIDAY AFTERNOONS’ Join some of LSO Discovery’s younger participants as they explore Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons, a set of 12 songs written for school children.
